    • @rathork
      @rathork 3 роки тому +51

      That's simply because there are basically no furniture to store things, or the storing opportunities (like the closets behind the doors) are not being used. So all the stuff is just laying around which makes it look randomly cluttered. Had the same thoughts when I saw this.

    • @mephiles6432

      It's not minimalist, he's saying minimalist as an excuse to why he's got no furniture, this flat is empty, looks dirty, no natural light, and it doesn't look like air circulates well so I'm pretty sure it doesn't smell that well either.

    • @lizpimentel2566

      It looks very cluttered and he seems to have a lot of things packaged in plastic (no judgement but plastic just makes things look cluttered and not good) like he could have bought a bigger container or hand sanitizer to refill the one small bottle and he could have put away the things on the countertop to keep it clutter free.

      @@lucasmoreirasantos8377 To each their own of course, just to get that out of the way. There's nothing wrong with (learning to) being happy with just the minimal, but I find many people to be taking it to an extreme. In this specific case, I find that it still looks cluttered even with so little things and there are so many unnecessary things stripped down. The apartment doesn't have enough windows or they're covered up-- that's really unhealthy. There's also almost nothing that indicates it's a personal space. I'd believe it if you were to tell me it's a hotel room and honestly, who wants to live in a hotel room.
      I don't know who needs to hear this, but you don't need to live with just a mattress on the floor to be a good developer lol. It's all about the mindset. Minimalism (to me), is being able to let things go and understand that we are privileged to have the things we do and appreciate them for what they are. I know many great developers (and people) who have their desks and apartments cluttered. Doesn't mean they're not being productive (the opposite in fact). It just means each of us have our own way system. Finding yourself to be happier with less clutter is great! But make sure it isn't to the detriment of your overall health. Don't be afraid to let some sun in your life and breathe in some fresh air.

    • @TerraMarie34
      @TerraMarie34 3 роки тому +12

      I definitely get what you’re saying. I do disagree though. This may be extreme to you, but I don’t think the message here is that developers need to be clutter free or in order to be a good developer you need to be clutter free. As someone who is a developer and animator, I can fully understand where this guy is coming from even though I would never live like this personally. Developers usually are like this because our brains work differently. I always always always have blackout curtains that cover my windows because it helps me think. I always get rid of things like clockwork because I literally cannot think or focus if something behind me that I can’t even see is out of place and I know it’s out of place because I walked by it or something. As a developer I’m just majorly focused and somehow less things make it easier for me to do that. It’s a weird mindset that not everyone will understand. Not saying all developers are like this either. Some people can work in whatever space at whatever time. I’m just saying that I personally don’t find this to be depressing and I’m sure this guy isn’t depressed while being in this space either. He’s making too much money to be depressed about not having furniture that he could well afford without breaking the bank. This isn’t sending any messages other than live how you want.

    • @lowercasecat
      @lowercasecat 3 роки тому +7

      @@TerraMarie34 Thank you for your reply. I don't believe it's a matter of agreeing or disagreeing though. Like I said, it's just my own personal opinion after all and it really doesn't matter to me how everyone lives their lives. I'm a developer too. I was just trying to give a different perspective and also (carefully) wanted to touch up on the fact that it's important to think of your own health too, for people who are just starting out coding. It's fine if you need to be in darkness and closed off windows during the time you're working, but it's absolutely not healthy to only have two windows in your home and no natural light. People are cooped up in their homes as it is with COVID, some fresh air can do wonders to your brain and problem solving skills. And well, this video does send a certain message, whether it has that intention or not. But to be fair, software engineers are quirky people in general. I just wanted to remind people to take care of themselves more often and that it's okay to not follow the minimalistic trend.

    I too am a fan of the completely blacked out room for sleeping, but a word of caution.
    When you pin/tape all the sides like that, you remove the ability for the moisture that builds up inside that window seal area to escape.
    Short term this creates odd moisture accumulation inside that space.
    Long term this causes mold to grow. I had this issue in the last two 1 year leases I had at apartments and never thought anything of it, UNTIL...
    My girlfriend showed me what curtain rods are, and now I have no mold. Turns out they aren't just fancy nonsense, but also anti mold devices. 🤷‍♂️

    Don't friends and family come to visit you? How do you serve them with a juice, coffee or a cake? Oh, ok, they can come home with a spoon and a plate (or cup) in their backpack.
    How do you relax? In the bedroom you can't read a book (maybe just on the phone flash), not to mention the TV, a movie night. You're probably watching it on your laptop, but I find it very uncomfortable.

    Good video. I think that coffee maker is not important at all. You can make coffee on normal kettle. Boil water, put coffee in water. Then quick boil water couple of times. Then wait about 5 minutes and then pour the coffee into a cup. the Coffee powder should be rough. Normal coffee is too fine-grained. You can take one item off your list =)

    Let s be honest. Some things are good. Some are not.
    Things that I like:
    - minimal furniture
    - minimal silverware (clean in no time!)
    - generally tidy
    - much space
    Things that are not cool
    - the picture should be put high where you see it
    - messy computer cables
    - no containers for objects (some things, like in storage room, are just scattered around. Dust will cover em all)
    - tape on windows is the worst.
    Listen to Megan for some compromise. You are a clever man.
