My Minimalist Apartment Tour

- Welcome to this tour of my 1-bedroom minimalist apartment. I embraced minimalism in early 2021. And since then, it has really shaped my day-to-day decisions and the way I go through life.
If you’re new to this channel, my name is Peter and I make videos about minimalism and slow living.
As you will see in my minimalist home, I’m not an extreme minimalist. I really admire them, but (spoiler alert!) I have a bed. And a sofa. Oh, and I own four spoons.
Yeah…
Jokes aside, since I’ve taken a more minimalist approach to life, I’ve noticed some profound changes. Minimalism grounds me. I have more headspace. I also live with more intention.
I’ve learned that minimalism is not a competition of who has the fewest possessions. Instead, it’s about creating space for what’s truly important.
Enjoy the tour!

What are _your_ thoughts on having a washing machine next to your food?
I don’t use the dishwasher that was provided in my kitchen so I’d rather have a washing machine there instead. Aesthetically I’m not a fan, but it makes practical sense.
I see no harm in it myself but each to their own.
Perhaps I'll hide it with a wooden panel. As you say in the video, the more visual information, the more distracting it is.
Gotta do what you gotta do to survive. I lived in lots of apartments in the UK, and it was almost always in the kitchen. If you want to live somewhere relatively central, it's almost always the go-to hack to avoid having a laundry room or a bigger bathroom.
There's one difference though, just like dishwasher there are also washing machines designed to be built in, so on the outside they'll look exactly like a normal kitchen cupboard door.
It's unusual, I've never seen that before in the US, but I suppose it would really encourage you to keep that space clean. Nobody wants to stare at dirty laundry while they're cooking.
I laughed when you dropped that ball and the dog just stood there lol😂
The 'playing fetch' struggle was real! 😅
Switching out the sofa made a huge difference in the coziness! I love its hidden storage. The balcony, the view, your dad’s painting, the fireplace…..love it all! My fake plants bring me as much happiness as my real ones. Thanks for sharing ✌🏼
It did, Trace! Glad you liked the video, thx for watching 😀
I know this is a 10 month old video… but if you are ever looking for space on your counter…. get rid of the drying rack. I have a small kitchen and I would have to prepare everything on the table… then I decided to just remove the drying rack. Whenever I do the dishes, I put a towel on the counter, put the dishes over there, dry them, put them away and clear the counter.
I did that too in my old place. It looks much better and forces you to put them right away. I actually had my kitchen counters bare, it was so nice, I actually cleaned more because it was so open too. I moved back home ultimately because it was so expensive to live there.
I really enjoyed this video. Inspired to set up a minimalist apartment, too.
Great tour, Peter. Do you miss your foster dog? I can't imagine life without my dogs. They always remind me there is no material good that will ever compare to unconditional love.
Yes, he was a very good boi 🐕 Dogs always make me happy, whenever I see one on its daily walk. I hope to have a dog of my own day. 😀
This is so inspirational. You've made a cozy, inviting home out of a small space. By contrast, my family of three lives in a 2,000 square foot manufactured home with way more clutter... But I am working on that! I'm removing a little more every day.
Sometimes I wish I could take my computer and office desk out of my bedroom, but my husband needs absolute confidentiality in his home office so this is where it's got to go. But I used the principles of minimalism to make my side of the room more like a sanctuary. I removed all the clutter from the surfaces, streamlined the items in my file cabinet, removed all electronics except the computer, and bought a plant that is easy to keep alive. Now it's my favorite space.
That sounds like a wonderful little sanctuary you created on your side of the room. It's not always easy, practicing minimalism when living with others. But your example shows that it's still possible to be intentional about how you set up your space, even if there are certain limitations. Thanks for sharing! 🙌🏻
I really enjoyed your home tour! It was very nicely done. You have a very cozy, minimal and efficient space. Love the natural lighting also. Thanks so much for sharing with us. 😁
Glad you liked it! 😀
Lots of people in the UK have the washing machine in the kitchen. No issue there. Thanks for the tour - you’re an inspiration. I’m not a minimalist the way you are, but everything I own has a place, and I like it all. I have very little in storage, and the older I get I shop very rarely. It’s a very freeing sensation to not be overwhelmed by your stuff.
That's also my experience since I've embraced minimalism. How I've come to understand minimalism is that it's not a numbers game. Instead, it's about being intentional about the items you surround yourself with (sounds like you are! 🙌🏻) as well as your spending habits. A 20-year old single student will have different needs than a parent of 3 kids. But everyone can have small or even big wins by being intentional about their stuff. Glad to hear you enjoy the videos! 😊
Nice!👍🏻
I died laughing when you commented about the obligatory 4 tshirts all in the same color!
The apartment tour was great! I’d have more of an issue with the refrigerator being so far away than the washer in the kitchen. Thank you!
Thanks! Yeah, it's a bit of a weird location, the refrigerator. It was already there when I moved in and don't really know where else to put it, I guess I got used to it. 😀
I enjoyed the tour - thank you 🙂 You have a stylish and tranquil home in a truly beautiful location. With regard to the washing machine question, mine is located in my kitchen, also, which is usually the case for smaller houses and apartments in the UK. I have no complaints! I enjoy your videos - they're gently relaxing and informative. Have a great weekend!
Oh really, your washing machine is also in the kitchen? Interesting, I had never seen it before. 😉 Thanks for watching!
As a Bulgarian, I’ve always wondered how you ended up there and how you’re finding life in the country. I love how you slip in scenes from markets, Vitosha boulevard and the likes in your videos. Big fan here, keep it up!
Maybe I'll talk about that in more detail one day, on the channel 😉. TL;DR I lived in Thailand for a few years but wanted to move somewhere closer to my family. Ended up in Bulgaria and I'm happy I did, it's a lovely country! Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos 🙌🏻
I too have a washing machine in my kitchen area. It's not ideal but the kitchen is a functional place and so is the washer, so why not? Hope you didn't mention the fake plants because I criticized you for having them, way back last year (comment now deleted), I shouldn't have. Anyway, I've since learned that even fake greenery has the same psychological benefits as real plants, even just the colour green too. Always good to watch your videos, they remind me how simpler my life could be. Keep them coming, Peter. Many thanks.
No worries, Teresa! That was actually a valid point, and I would love to have real plants one day 🪴 I'm glad you like the videos. Have a great week! 🙌🏻
Thank you for sharing your apartment.. so neat and beautiful, I always watching your new videos. please uploading more videos. God Bless you Sir
Thanks Editha 😊 More videos coming soon!
Great tour of the apartment Peter, simple and cozy. My neighbor Totoro is in my top 3 Ghibli Movies :). The view out the window is magnificent, may I ask in which city is your apartment?
Hello from Austria! I have discovered people who have also a UA-cam channel about minimalism. They are nice, but still buy too many things. They call themselves minimalists, but they are not really minimalists for me. They even advertise products like jewellery! You said something very important: Minimalism is not something you buy. It's something you do.
Thanks, Simone! Don't worry, I am not the type that will advertise jewelry 😉
It sounds like I am watching National Geography, nice voice! 😆
Ha, thanks for the kind words! 🙏🏻
I love your humour. Made me crack up 🤣
Thanks, glad you liked it! 😉
The talking dirty plate was worth hitting the like button 😂
😂 👍
Wait there is a storage room? Somebody is cheating 😉
It’s a beautiful apartment. What city is that?
I love it
Thanks Linda! 🙌🏻
Hello Peter, wonderful video! I was wondering if this is your home or is it a second home/pied a terre? You mentioned your girlfriend lives abroad? Do you also live in the Netherlands? Thank you!
It's my home 😉
@@IAmPeterCook wow that's really amazing. I sometimes see minimalists without a lot of possesions, but sometimes it turns out that they have storage units or their stuff is in their parents or partners house. Which is also okay but now I know you really have very little possessions. But as you say: it's about what you do and not about what you have or don't have. Really enjoy your content and all the best to you! Groeten Simone
Nice vídeo
From Brazil
"ouch!" 🤣
😂
do you share your minimalist experiences in Instagram?
No, I'm not on Instagram. Just UA-cam. 😉
"If I don't look minimalist in one mirror, I get a second opinion" 😂😂😂This killed me
Thanks for the tour Peter. What's nice about home tour videos is seeing how people apply their values in what is usually an imperfect space. There are always a few things we wish were different, but that's okay. Your apartment is purposeful, calm, and has a lovely view. It seems like a great place to be.
That's nice of you to say, Marc! You're right, it's about applying values, even if a place is imperfect. Are there some things I would change? Definitely. But at the same time, I made it a lot more my own and was intentional about it. And that's what counts. I'm glad with the result, It feels like home now. 😊
Hi Peter, thanks for making me smile. By the way you are very handsome. Renee from the USA😘😘
Thanks for the kinds words, Renee! 😊
I have snow envy. Greetings from Darwin 🇦🇺🎄❤️
and i hv snow hate ..big time ...greetings 😊😊😂😂
My washing machine is in my one bedroom apartment kitchen area. Soooo easy ❤
Sounds convenient! 😀
@@IAmPeterCook Being mostly raw vegan makes life pretty easy too 🌴🌴
Great video I really enjoyed it. You have a beautiful home. I'm on a journey to start reducing, less spending oh and enough with clutter and mess although I try hard it's more hard when you share a home with your loved ones.
I loved the phrase "Minimalism is not something you but, it is something you do". Hugs from South America!
I love your father’s painting, Peter 😊 nice video!
Thanks Sofi! 😊
Loved this tour and explanations ❤
Glad you enjoyed it, Nabille! ✨
where did you find that shoerack from?
I believe I got it at Jysk, Jeffrey. I love it!
@@IAmPeterCook thanks!
Hey Peter, you have a lovely place.
The sofa corner looks so calm and cozy!
Btw, I really like the red hangers in your closet, since they do a great job of visually separating each item. And that quote at the end is really inspiring - "minimalism is not about who has the fewest possessions".
I've moved to a twice bigger house half an year ago, and it still feels disorienting. It's only myself, my wife and our toddler son, so we really don't use all the space. Nevertheless, with so many toys around, and only one closet, it feels crowded. Our biggest priority as of now is to invest in custom made closets for every room, so we can free up space for what truly maters and hide everything else from sight.
Oh, and one more thing. Can you please share a link to your desktop background? It looks very clean :)
Hi Slavko! First things first, this is the screensaver you asked about: fliqlo.com/
You're right, the red hangers aren't too bad. 😀
I think it's a great idea to free up space for what really matters by creating custom storage. With a kid around, I imagine things can get messy quickly, with toys and other stuff lying all around the house. Good luck! 🙌🏻
Hi Peter Cook, big fan of your channel and I really enjoyed this video! How could one get in touch with you these days...?
Thanks Kyla! Sent you a DM 😉
4 spoons, 4 shirts of white, 4 black, I see a pattern. 😄
You might be on to something here, Joseph...🙈 😂
Do you have any personal belongings left in your parents’ home?
Yes, mostly old photo albums. I live abroad, so I never brought them with me here.
Really enjoyed watching this! Makes me realise I need to de clutter my own home
Good luck with decluttering your home, thanks for watching the video! 🙌🏻
Small but it has everything you need and it feels very cozy. I think it's lovely.
Love your place! Where did you buy your sofa?
Thanks! Bought the sofa at Jysk, a Danish retail chain. ✨
Thanks for your videos Peter, now I understand minimalism better, I would like you to make a video about your musical tastes, books, movies or series, culinary tastes, would be nice, greetings from Barcelona✌🏼
Great suggestion, Beatriz! I'm happy to hear you enjoy the videos ✨
Thanks for the tour Peter. I find your videos relaxing and inspirational for living simply. Enjoy how you explain the decisions you make around the items you own, and your explanation around the silent to-do list... So true! And your little Totoro figurine reminds us to keep some space in our lives for whimsy and joy🙌😊
Thanks, Violet! I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and found the explanations helpful 😀
I your apartment is really nice and calming too. I love the view of the mountains from your window. Enjoyed your added humour! 😄
I'm happy you liked the video. I try to add little bits of humor in here and there 😉
Great video - thanks for sharing! Something I aspire to - if only I didn't live with 2 messy kids and 1 messy partner. Oh well!
Thanks, glad you liked it, David! Yeah keeping a place organized is more of a challenge with kids. 😬 I hope you'll find a way to find small wins here and there, they all add up. Good luck!
What do you record with and what software do you use to edit?
I record all my videos on an iPhone 12 pro and use Final Cut Pro X to edit. Audio is a Tascam DR-10L lavalier mic. Hope this helps!
Hey Peter greetings from Greece, New subscriber here 😁!
Your videos are nice and calm at the same time! Can't wait for your next upload!!
P. S. Any good music to suggest?
Thank you for the kind words, glad you get value from the videos!
Re music: this is a bit random, but I recently watched the movie Big Easy Express, it's about a bunch of musicians who travel the US by train and play together. I really like this version of All Wash Out by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros 😊 🎶: ua-cam.com/video/p9x-J7QUIbw/v-deo.html
@@IAmPeterCook thank you for the info i will start from there!! 😁
Really nice tour video Peter! 👍🏾
Glad you enjoyed it, Christina! ✨
Mirror joke was nice.. keep going dude 👍
I try to add the occasional joke in here and there. Always wonder how they will come across, but I'm glad you liked it 😂
@@IAmPeterCook Agreed. I really enjoy the humor. I think it makes your videos more approachable. I don’t share the more serious ones with my partner, but do with the more lighthearted ones.
Are you Dutch?
Maybe...😉
@@IAmPeterCook Ahahahaha geweldig!
Ze hulpen me veel. Blijv hun aan het maken, vriend! :)
