What sets your videos apart from all the other "farmer" videos is Becky's superb editing skills. So many of the other vids are disjointed, filled with obnoxious cover music and just not edited very well. Way to go Becky!
@@pinwizz69 Agree! Mike Mitchell is fun to watch. And the Welkers do a nice job. Ivers Farms in Southern IN is good too. But MF is the one I watch when I only have time for one. 💪
Wow! That performance brought a tear to my eye. Amazing vocals, perfect pitch. Just amazing!! It's a good thing for you if farming doesn't work out you can always launch your vocal career.
Spacers are there to increase the bolt length enough to get a "stretch" on the bolt when you torque it. The stretch is what keeps the bolt from coming loose! I actually designed the tooling that makes the bolts and spacers! Made in the USA! Made in Wisconsin actually!
At this point it's just a matter of time before the two dogs and cat dog hijack the ranger, and ride off in to the sunset, they really do love to get ride alongs :D
For those of us watching in Celsius zones, 15F is near -10C. Becky if were bored with nothing much on a splash comment with the conversion would be cool. Oh and another top tip for you, tie a broom to your back and you could sweep as you rush around doing all the other jobs 😁
There should be a disclaimer on this video that reads, if you are watching this video while dining in at Culvers eating supper, and Zach randomly says our pets heads are falling off, expect people to look at you weird when it looks like you are crying because you are laughing that hard. Keep up the great job and happy harvest
I'm not even a farmer but I watch everyone of you're videos. You're day to day routines and quirks of everything going wrong and right somehow relate to my life. But great to see how you guys all pull together to get things done. Keep making the great and entertaining videos.
almost, ALMOST. Almost had the scene where the wheels came off!! Good thing there are so dang many there. WOW, you had a LOT of machinery working out there. Amazing!! Thanks Zack, for showing us how it works there. Great video. (thanks Becky)
Thank you for explaining everything in laymen’s terms. None of my relatives farm any longer and I miss that type of life. Your videos and others that post give me my fix. Thanks Zach Becky Dad Kids, dogs and cat/dog for sharing your lives with us.
Amazing to see what goes on in the field and behind the scenes, when the harvester is out in the field. Thank you for sharing what you do, truly have enjoyed watching these.
Zack the reason for long bolts and spacers is at spec torque the longer bolt will stretch more and provide a higher clamping force learned that in Cat service training.
We had hopes of being done with corn this week. We only got about 20 acres picked today, and the bearing in the bottom of the vertical part of the unloading auger shelled out. wrenching and hammering in the morning and I hope the bearing is readily available.
Had a dual fall off my combine this harvest and dealer had to come out and put it back on, sheared all the Bolts off and they said it was likely that the wheel studs were loose from the paint on the mating surface of the wheel chipping away. They said they always grind the paint off on new machines or new wheels and they don't have any issues after that. Just something to take into consideration!
Regarding the wheel spacer on the wheel bolts... that so the bolt can be 1.5” longer than needed to stretch and provide more clamp load on the rim. (When properly torqued)
Just a thought. If you mounted an air jet, operated from below, pointed at the camera from the side, you could blow off the dust when you need to see in your bin.
The spacer is there to create extra length for a longer bolt. The longer the bolt the more stretch under torque the bolt will have. The more stretch it has under load the less likely it will back off and run loose. But for some reason Deere struggles with combine duals staying on 🤦♂️
Hey man I’m from the north east and we get pretty cold winters but 15 degrees in October is freaking cold brotha you don’t have to sugar coat it.. you guys are the toughest working class around.. props to your family farm
On the farm, it seems like we always had at least one helper kitty that liked to hang out with the people...and demand petting while we were trying to get work done😂
the spacers on your combine wheel studs are to increase the effective clamping load of each bolt. in applications where short bolts are required, using a spacer and a longer bolt allows the bolt to stretch/flex more before before breaking. great videos, keep them coming.
The Millennial is finally available in 4k, it should be hashtagged! I always enjoy all the work you, dad, and Jim along with others put into the farm...let's not forget your wife Becky who's doing all that editing!
Hey Zach, a little tip for future you to tell the difference for a standard and a metric bolt a standard has those lines that you have on top a metric will have a number on top usually like 5.5 6.5 something like that.
Spacers..The purpose of the spacers is to improve the clamping force. A bolt behaves like a strong spring. They are not as solid as we think but when tightened stretch a wee bit. The longer the bolt the longer it stretches given same torque. Now a bolt with very short shank can't stretch much at the desired torque. Now when you put a spacer on it, assuming it's a decently made one, nice and square and strong enough material, the tightened bolt becomes a longer spring. This means any deflections in the joint are accommodated within the yield limits of the bolt. In other words a 0.010 deflection on a short bolt might yield it and it doesn't return to starting length and it will come loose. A long bolt with spacer is capable of handling the same deflection and returning to original length. Making use of bolt stretch allows joints to flex and not come apart as the load is shared among nearby bolts. A common place you see spacers on bolts is under slew rings on an excavator. Engineering. Don't you just love it. As an aside, grade 8.8 bolts means yields at 800mpa and tighten to 80% what ever that works out to be on the chart. 10.9 means 1000mpa and tighten to 90%. Cap screws are usually 12.9 so 1200mpa and 90%. So cap screw stands 1080mpa stress. 8.8 stands 640mpa stress. So cap screw is over a third stronger than 8.8 bolt when installed.
We use Mystik grease in every machine we have. The high temp/high pressure full synthetic is our flavor. We have ovens, melters, shakers, etc in the foundry and the stuff just works.
Well, I hope you yield improves and those nasty Arctic temps go up to where you need them to be. As well as that darn struggle bus goes to the scrap yard soyou have a nice hassle free remaining harvest season. I watch your channel and Larson Farms channel and having grown up in the small Michigan farm town in the 60's and 70's it absolutely amazes me how big and complex tractors and combines have become. I can remember when farm equipment always had the right ofcway when moving equipment during planting and harvest season. 14 and farm kids got passes to work on the farm at those times. It's why they had the neatest home built 4 wheelers with a bed to haul parts and tools to do emergency repairs and deliver lunch and dinner nice and hot. My first Boy Scout Scoutmaster had a large farm and once you were 14 he'd hire kids tohelp with the permission of their parents part time after school. Especially harvesting hay. Did that one summer never again. Those darn bales were heavy to sing around.
The reason for the spacers on the wheel bolts is so that the 450 lbs of torque stretches the bolt enough to keep the joint tight. A shorter bolt would loosen up more often. Really appreciate the content and the editing. Every video flows well. Nice to see all the help also!
Mystic products are awesome!! I use Mystic oils and grease on all my equipment and it is amazing!! The one time we switched motor oil brands is the time we blew up some engines. Just saying. Lol.......ENGAGE THE SEPARATOR!!!!!!
Zack, Try sticking a zip tie in the electrical socket on the trailer with the plug in it. Make a loop, stick the power cable thru that and shove the tip into the trailer plug. That should keep it steady in the plug.
I just can't believe that you're not at a million subscribers right now I kind of like to see Anna get a ride and some of that equipment that'd be great you guys take care of God bless great videos Zach
I had both left tires fall off the same combine a couple years ago. All the bolts loosened up and sheared off. It's a know defect on those S series combines. Got some crazy pictures from that incident.
We also used to buy our grease by 55 gallon drums as well as the 3 different oils we used (Petrol engine, Diesel engine and old Kero burner tractors/windmill pumps etc.
Just install lense wipers like a car windshield wiper duh!!! So simple!! Gets the blood pumping during harvest!! Love the stairs on our bins too way better than going up and down ladders!!!
We have the same tarp and hopper door setup on one of our semis, I have found that if you hold the open and close buttons at the same time until the red light shows, then do the same for one on the hoppers, and the green light and system works. It the un plug and re plug for that lol
The spacers are to help the bolts stay tighter as the bolt is longer and has more stretch as the wheel load on the bolts comes and goes as you go in dips and wash outs
I enjoy these videos and appreciate the work you and other farmers do. I have a question. I saw today that the US only has enough diesel remaining for 25 days. Do you all have any backup plans in place for something like that?
About the cameras in the bins. Take a box around the camera and place around plastic window in front of the camera with the centre of the window aside from camera. Mount that window on the axis of a motor. Let that motor spin. The spinning forces will take the dust off the window and a brush could do the last bit. When the window spins while you use the camera, then also some dust will blur out and not block the view. Good luck.
Great content as always, thank you. You mentioned video cameras in the grain bins do not work because the dust would settle on them. Would it be worth setting up an airline to blow the dust off? A connector in the control room to each camera, quick blow with the airline and you should have the view, without all the climbing.
Heard you say cameras would dust over with in minuets in the grain bins. They'll come a time where you kids will have to climb the ladders. You and your Dad will be grounded! Before that, could you install a compresser near the bin's and put a manifold on it with 1/4" lines running to each bin to where you would put a camera? Control each line with a solenoid on each leg on the manifold. Have them controled where ever you would watch a screen. Push a button to blast the lens clear of the dust enough to see what is going on. It would be a much easier step to take.
I vaguely remember in one of your previous video's you changed the heating lances running into the dryer, pulling them out if i recall corectly. Could that be a cause for the temp issue ?
@Millenial Farmer - The spacers on the bolts are there to help provide adequate clamping force. The bolt is effectively a giant spring when torqued, and in order to get enough clamping force (to keep the bolts tight and prevent loosening) they need a given length to be able to stretch and provide that clamping force. Without spacers, the same torque on the fastener may actually overload the bolt and could risk eventual damage.. A stack of washers will provide the same function in a pinch, though I'd take a tightened bolt without the spacer over no bolt!
Your on a roll as dry as it was I was thinking yields would be done more than they are 2022 is almost over let pray next year is better your doing a fine job young man and I'm sure your son will step rite into your shoes love your videos thank you
Run a set of jumper cables or a boost pack straight to the motor on your tarp if the control box won't run the motor. This will bypass the control box and will also diagnose if the motor is bad. Correct polarity will open tarp. Reverse polarity will close
We did a test section of our corn with the combine..41%...we hand roll at 28%...so in the very good corn there is a 2nd cob that the plant shut down prematurely and then got hit with early frost... it's rubber...and bringing the whole sample moisture up...the last time we had this was 2014 in one small field. We will have 1000ac of this stuff to do...
Great videos. I enjoy that it is not scripted and that cat dog, formerly known as Ray, gets some screen time. I appreciate all the hard work you and the world’s farmers do. Eve 6 - Inside Out.
Get a long set of jumper cables. Cut the clamps off one end and put the appropriate size ring terminals. Pop the tarp motor cover pull the wires from the terminals and hook up the jumper cables, go straight to the batteries to run the tarp. We have a set with the plug for the belt trailers in case we have controller issues. When I worked for the row cropper we kept spare bolts and spacers around for the 9660. I think the spacer is to spread the force farther from the hole in the wheel than a washer can.
Why dont you get some of those mechanical bin sensors. They mount on the side of the bin and when they have grain on them they flip to show the level is atleast that high, and flip back when the level drops down and theres no grain on it. No wires, no sensors, no cameras, just gotta look at it
So crazy that you guys are not too far from us up here in North Dakota, and yet our yields were pretty good. We had one of the best years for wheat at our place we've had in years.

Zach.... It's amazing how much your son looks like your father... I love to see those two generations hanging out together on the farm!!
The spacer on the wheel bolts allows more length between the threaded hole and the head so the bolt can stretch more and hopefully stay tight longer
The spacer is there to create extra length for a longer bolt.

Great video again . The 780 we run can have the same problem with wheel studs so we tighten them once a week.
The spacers are to help the bolts stay tighter as the bolt is longer and has more stretch as the wheel load on the bolts comes and goes as you go in dips and wash outs
I dig the look of the new corn head when it's folded...looks intimidating, in a mutant kind of way.

Mystic JT-8 And JT-6 is all my Grandfather ever ran in everything he was a Mystic dealer. It made a believer out of me as a young man
Zack, The bolts are metric and the spacers are so the bolt has little stretch when it is torqued proper. (JD Harvester worker)
Zack, you are a great guy on that camera I Enjoy your content ,you have great tapping Skill ! Happy holloween 👻
the spacer is to make the joint stiffer than the bolt so the bolt is always under tension and it cant loosen to vibration
Bingo - What he said ^^^^^^^^^^
FYI Standard thread bolts have the dashes 3 for grade 5 and 6 for grade 8. Metric have a 8.8 10.8 or 12.8 stamped on the head.
Yea for Ray making an appearance!
I've got a titanium cage, 2 plates and and 4 screws and they are very good at pulling the cold in
