We had a rock in a field in Condon Oregon I was sick of hitting. Took the Cat D6C dozer and started dozing around it. The rock ended up being the size of a Jeep Wrangler and I had a huge excavation around it. I couldnt slide it but was able to roll it out of the field with the dozer. Stupid rock turned into a whole day project.
Zach, you supposed to use the outriggers and backhoe to remove backhoe from tractor. It’s why the pump has the extra feet of hydraulic hose. With pump running, drop outriggers and drop dipper so bucket is on ground. That is what holds the unit upright so you can remove. The rams will most likely settle in time, so when you reinstall, hook up pump first to tractor, it’s why you have extra hose..get the outriggers and dipper back to where you need them and hook up backhoe.
Zach, those brown gloves bring back sooo many found memories...I chuckled a little to myself and, I'll be darned if my eye didn't leak a bit....it's funny how silly things trigger an old archive in the memory bank...thanks
Just an observation about cleaning out the dryer. Find an industrial shop vac or something for that bottom part. But if that isn't a option then invest into some knee pads. I love cat dog, the cartoon not so much. Can't wait to see the new storage shed being built.
A dust collector for a woodshop would probably work pretty well. Most have a 4" hose connection and move a ton of air/can handle long hoses, plus they're not super expensive.
@@howtowakeakar I was going to suggest a shop vac with the dust bag inside it to save the filter, and buy a couple hoses and daisy chain them together to keep the air from blowing around too much... though, the $5 broom is a cheaper option.

If you put the legs and bucket down on the backhoe it will be a 3 point stand that allows you to unhook it from the tractor. It also makes it adjustable to hook it back up again.
Watching you use the tractor mounted back hole told me one thing I will buy a back hole not a tractor mounted mounted one ,also like the idea of a warm cab .Putting it 18 in under how long will it take the frost push it back up ,could be fun to come back up .

If you're buying Napa batteries for the truck that could be the problem. I would go with Cat, Interstate, or paccar TRP. Make sure you clean the lugs really good with a rolloc disk and make sure the disconnect switch is really working with an ohm meter. Make sure all the grounds go through the disconnect switch if there's an ECM or tarp ground hooked to the battery it will still draw down.

A vacuum could get rid of the fine dust in the dryer, by emptying it into a large bag used for industrial-size vacuums. Saves disturbing up the dust via a rake/hoe/shovel etc.
Zach, to let you know, it’s quicker to remove rocks with your skidsteer and forks. I’ve done both methods and the skidsteer has substantial more power. And you can carry it on forks when removed. You can plunge the forks right into Mother Earth and curl back under rock..works quite well..have a great Thanksgiving!!
Zach, my dad had a dryer much smaller than that, but during the season he would open those small doors opposite the fans once in a while when the dryer is running, so most of the stuff would blow out. Just stand clear when you open them.
Hey Zac, have you considered putting an isolation switch on the truck to stop the slow drain on the batteries, mounted on the battery box on the negative, it'd keep your batteries from being drained.
We fought batteries too on our semis. We eventually went to a geared down starter and ran an extra ground to the frame. Went from one that doesn’t want to start at 30 degrees well to something that fires off at 10.

They've taken him planting a few times last summer, and he'll spend all day outside watching various equipment coming and going out of their driveway. This farm actually owns one of your old combines from what I understand!
So many rocks in Tennessee . Rocks would get pitched on a pile. After the pile was large enough , the crusher would come and break up the stones. The small stone was placed in the driveway to keep the mud down. And give a base to drive on. Later.
Obviously I know money doesn't grow on trees, but I think once you have this backhoe and realize all the things and different ways it can be helpful then I think you'll want to upgrade to a proper backhoe pretty soon. I haven't ran a 3 point before so maybe it's more capable than I think but I'm guessing even a older machine will have many more uses and might end up not hurting the wallet as much you would expect.
I was thinking the same thing Jack. A used backhoe can be found for no more money than that little three point "backhoe" attachment. If Millennial Farms has an equipment rental, they could rent an excavator, one hundred percent write off as a business expense.
I've never seen anyone take a backhoe attachment off like that usually we set the outriggers down and use the bucket and make a tripod stand and boom its off

We purchased a leaf/vac trailer to clean up around the dryer and it works great!makes it almost shovel-less will definitely cut down on the bending over inside if you get the tube long enough. Just a little idea we tried and thought we would shoot it your way
Agree. It's never ok to enter a grain bin or silo without a spotter/escape. Alone on the farm is not when you decide to do grain bin work. Farm safety is number one. I'm a big fan of your postings.
I have a bad feeling that if we don't see CatDog again one day randomly it's because he got smooshed. In one of his podcasts he goes into detail on how many cats get run over in the yard every year 😬
I use to work for a company that made powdered metal components. The dust was mostly iron, graphite, and zinc sterate. Really heavy and nasty stuff when it mixed with hydraulic oil leaking from the presses. I had a vacuum line made that would reach down into the pits under the presses and suck up all the crap so the crew didn't have to get into the pits and shovel. We took a piece of metal tubing about 10 feet long and put a 1/4" air nozzle into the side of the pipe about 6" from the end that pointed back toward the other end. We pumped 100 psi shop air into the nozzle. That created a vacuum to lift the powder and crap into the pipe then the air nozzle blew the junk up the pipe into a 55 gallon drum with a filter bag over a vent in the top of the drum. It worked great. You could do the same. Just make the pipe long enough to reach into the bins. It would work even better on the light stuff in your bins.
I laughed so hard when Onyx cruised by in the Ranger with his customers in the back seat just looking around.... So glad for all of you to see the new shed starting to take shape. Thanks for sharing. Happy Thanksgiving.
Hey Mr. Millenial Farmer, now that I have seen that in all of your Simply Safe announcements: Please keep your carbon monxide sensor lower to the ground. Carbon monoxide is way heavier than air, which means, it fills a room up from the bottom to the top. If you have your sensor really high up in the room, the room is already full with carbon monoxide and there is still no alarm. I would suggest, that you put it at a height of about 1ft 8in (should be half a meter 😁). Just for your and your familiy´s safety. Greetings from an Austrian engineer/farmer 😁
Zach We have an older peterbilt and we always where battling low batteries in it and we changed the starter to a newer design and have not had a low battery in 2 years on it. The starter wasn't bad it still worked but it had a dead short in it and would act like a low batt but it wasn't the batteries. Something to try thanks for reading.
Zach, since the shed is already constructed by the time of this video, are you going to pour a concrete floor inside of it or are you going to leave it dirt? Will it be another heated shop?
One thing on cleaning out your dryer. Everyday or two during drying open that little door a crack or little more below the entrance of each air chamber. It will blow the fines out. Sometimes something to disturb the fines is necessary. But not usually.
Grab yourself a roof snow shovel for clearing under the dryer. Less bending and crawling you can just use the extensions and the rear facing shovel to pull it out.
Love the videos .Maybe time for an excavator or a true backhoe? It was both entertaining and infuriating watching you dig the rock. John Deere does sell excavators .😁

I remember a big rock we would hit very year with the disk. We didn't have the luxury of a backhoe, but we were able to dig and dig around it to get a log chain around it to pull it out. Also someone told me that no matter how deep you might bury a rock it will eventually find the surface of the ground.
Yes, both of those cats are nice. One of my black cats is totally feral, but very friendly towards me! Her little brother is, too...when it's time for chow, he gets all excited and starts squeaking!
If you add a peice of 12" long 4.5" ( I recall) silicone tubing like you use on turbo charger on the end of that leaf blower you don't have to bend over. If you cut it on an angle with a little finger on it like an elephants trunk. You can use the tongue to get down in cracks.
Zach, get a hose long enough to use to vacuum all the "waist corn" material.... By using your vacuum system to clean the dryer and around the bins. Have the vacuum system empty the waist into a trailer or small truck and haul it off. Make a excruciating job into a easy task.
I got a rock out that was about half-again bigger, with a crappy old loader. I ended up with at 25-35 foot tapered hole, wrapped 2-3 heavy chains around it, and dragged it to the edge of the field. Where we live, rocks just work their way up, so if we can get to it, we remove them, by chains, or dynamite (old method).
One of our 409 kenworths was doing the same for months after new batteries were installed. It turned out to be one bad earth connection from one battery. Pays to clean and check the connections back towards the starter also. Cheers
Put a battery cut-off switch on the semi-tractor(s)! The 4-year old Freightliners, that we have, have a factory battery cut-off switch (on the floor next to the drivers seat) with a label that say "If left idle for 3 days, disconnect batteries." All this new stuff is computer controlled. That computer is pulling power ALL of the time, regardless of whether the motor is running or not!
Basically you are right about that. There are hundreds of this little computers in modern vehicles. They will turn of, if you turn of your engine. But this is more like a standby mode, which draws a lot less current, but not zero. And with the sheer amount of little computers, this is still a problem. Also there is another issue: There are some bugs in the software running on this computers. If you are in bad luck, this could prevent one of the computers to shut down properly. So a battery disconnect indeed is a good idea.
How important is the Millennial Farmer to Google. When you showed the shed crew working drilling post holes, I got the idea of going on google maps, taking a picture of your old shed and someday comparing it to the new shed. Your satellite picture already shows your new area ready to build your new shed. I looked around my area and the satellite shot are from no newer than 2018. I hope they get it built before the snow flies. 😀

The farming was different in the 1970's & 80's. I build CNH tractors in the Fargo plant. I'm glad I found your channel, I find it very comforting to be out in the country.
After a few years of watching, I finally had the thought, why don't you put something triangular underneath the grain drier to make the bee's wings fall out from under the drier? Then you wouldnt have to climb under it.

I live in central Missouri, and I am planting a memorial garden for my Wife of 29 years, that passed 8/5/2022 from her 3rd but of cancer. I have a nice BCS tiller with a rotary plow. It does help with the rocks, but it's getting ridiculous. I have one rock, like the one you worked on, (small at the top) that I started with a spade, and ended up with a pick and alignment bar. It got to a personal level quite fast. I think it was part of the asteroid that offed the dinosaurs. I only have about 3.7 million to go, but at least the rotary plow does kick out the ones that are about the size of an old headlight. I still have to pick them up, and being that I am an old guy doesn't help much. I hope the comment helps with the logarithm though. Smiles.

We went with a mini excavator. Very useful Machine for so many things.

We took a piece of metal tubing about 10 feet long and put a 1/4" air nozzle into the side of the pipe about 6" from the end that pointed back toward the other end. We pumped 100 psi shop air into the nozzle. That created a vacuum to lift the powder and crap into the pipe then the air nozzle blew the junk up the pipe into a 55 gallon drum with a filter bag over a vent in the top of the drum.
It worked great. You could do the same. Just make the pipe long enough to reach into the bins.
It would work even better on the light stuff in your bins.
I suspect that that rock will be back up to plow depth in a few years!

now that I have seen that in all of your Simply Safe announcements: Please keep your carbon monxide sensor lower to the ground. Carbon monoxide is way heavier than air, which means, it fills a room up from the bottom to the top. If you have your sensor really high up in the room, the room is already full with carbon monoxide and there is still no alarm. I would suggest, that you put it at a height of about 1ft 8in (should be half a meter 😁). Just for your and your familiy´s safety.

We have an older peterbilt and we always where battling low batteries in it and we changed the starter to a newer design and have not had a low battery in 2 years on it. The starter wasn't bad it still worked but it had a dead short in it and would act like a low batt but it wasn't the batteries. Something to try thanks for reading.

Zach, since the shed is already constructed by the time of this video, are you going to pour a concrete floor inside of it or are you going to leave it dirt? Will it be another heated shop?
One thing on cleaning out your dryer. Everyday or two during drying open that little door a crack or little more below the entrance of each air chamber. It will blow the fines out. Sometimes something to disturb the fines is necessary. But not usually.

Grab yourself a roof snow shovel for clearing under the dryer. Less bending and crawling you can just use the extensions and the rear facing shovel to pull it out.

Some notes I have taken after watching this video... for future reference:
- Get good knee pads... you will find it much more comfortable when crawling under, into, and around the dryer.
- Next year it may be time Onyx learn how to drive a shovel to help in the clean up
- Also... next year it may be time Onyx shadow you around the farm to learn on all the preventative maintenance you do after harvest. He is a smart guy. Time to fill his brain with more useful information.
I remember a big rock we would hit very year with the disk. We didn't have the luxury of a backhoe, but we were able to dig and dig around it to get a log chain around it to pull it out. Also someone told me that no matter how deep you might bury a rock it will eventually find the surface of the ground.
With the ground freeze and thaw each year, the rock will find its way back to the surface.
As cats go, you've got a good one. Verrry friendly and wouldn't think of using its built-in defense capabilities.
Yes, both of those cats are nice. One of my black cats is totally feral, but very friendly towards me! Her little brother is, too...when it's time for chow, he gets all excited and starts squeaking!
Should think about a tower dryer when it's time to upgrade. Much more fuel efficient and easier to clean.
If you add a peice of 12" long 4.5" ( I recall) silicone tubing like you use on turbo charger on the end of that leaf blower you don't have to bend over. If you cut it on an angle with a little finger on it like an elephants trunk. You can use the tongue to get down in cracks.
Its hard to fathom but we ran 8000 acres of crop with 2 big tractors, 1 small tractor, a combine and a TEA20.

Zach, get a hose long enough to use to vacuum all the "waist corn" material....
By using your vacuum system to clean the dryer and around the bins. Have the vacuum system empty the waist into a trailer or small truck and haul it off. Make a excruciating job into a easy task.
I got a rock out that was about half-again bigger, with a crappy old loader. I ended up with at 25-35 foot tapered hole, wrapped 2-3 heavy chains around it, and dragged it to the edge of the field. Where we live, rocks just work their way up, so if we can get to it, we remove them, by chains, or dynamite (old method).
Hey Zach you have to get the rock below the frost line or it will work its way back up. That why graves are 6 feet deep.

One of our 409 kenworths was doing the same for months after new batteries were installed. It turned out to be one bad earth connection from one battery. Pays to clean and check the connections back towards the starter also. Cheers
Put a battery cut-off switch on the semi-tractor(s)! The 4-year old Freightliners, that we have, have a factory battery cut-off switch (on the floor next to the drivers seat) with a label that say "If left idle for 3 days, disconnect batteries." All this new stuff is computer controlled. That computer is pulling power ALL of the time, regardless of whether the motor is running or not!
Basically you are right about that. There are hundreds of this little computers in modern vehicles. They will turn of, if you turn of your engine. But this is more like a standby mode, which draws a lot less current, but not zero. And with the sheer amount of little computers, this is still a problem. Also there is another issue: There are some bugs in the software running on this computers. If you are in bad luck, this could prevent one of the computers to shut down properly. So a battery disconnect indeed is a good idea.
@@markuswagner5754: I have to correct my statement a bit. Looking at the decal in my truck today, it says "If left idle for ONE DAY..."
How important is the Millennial Farmer to Google. When you showed the shed crew working drilling post holes, I got the idea of going on google maps, taking a picture of your old shed and someday comparing it to the new shed. Your satellite picture already shows your new area ready to build your new shed. I looked around my area and the satellite shot are from no newer than 2018. I hope they get it built before the snow flies. 😀

I would add a battery disconnect to the kenworth. A digital multimeter to check amp draw would help as well

Your videos are awesome, I spent my summers on my Grandfather's farm between Barnrsville and Wolverton Minnesota. I also spent time near Doran at my uncle's farm. The farming was different in the 1970's & 80's.

After a few years of watching, I finally had the thought, why don't you put something triangular underneath the grain drier to make the bee's wings fall out from under the drier? Then you wouldnt have to climb under it.

I think that those small areas in the dryer are the perfect size for onyx to do some shovel work😉

Only advice to give on running a backhoe is RPM’s, you want high RPM’s to have the most efficient control.

I live in central Missouri, and I am planting a memorial garden for my Wife of 29 years,
that passed 8/5/2022 from her 3rd but of cancer.
I have a nice BCS tiller with a rotary plow. It does help with the rocks, but it's getting ridiculous. I have one rock, like the one you worked on, (small at the top) that I started with a spade, and ended up with a pick and alignment bar. It got to a personal level quite fast. I think it was part of the asteroid that offed the dinosaurs.
I only have about 3.7 million to go, but at least the rotary plow does kick out the ones that are about the size of an old headlight. I still have to pick them up, and being that I am an old guy doesn't help much.
I hope the comment helps with the logarithm though.
