Lia , you should have put some ice in the cup with the room temperature sweet tea . The ice would have partially melted and diluted the sweetness . You should have also tried the red beans and rice side dish . That's my favorite Popeye's side . My favorite Popeye's condiment is the Mardi Gras Mustard , which is similar to Dijon mustard . Cheers !

The jell or gel is from cooking the pectin that's naturally in the fruit. Some fruits have more pectin than others so sometimes pectin is added to make the final product more firm.

Why go somewhere at all though if you aren't even going to try what they are famous for? This is a pattern. And if you want larger shrimp, those are called "butterfly shrimp", not "popcorn shrimp". They are available at most Popeyes. Get some advice before ordering. I must say though, if one doesn't like fried food, the South isn't the ideal place for you.
The sweet iced tea is super-saturated with cane sugar - mixed in while the tea is hot. Before everybody started trying to eat healthy, this was just called TEA in the South. No hot or unsweetened. Sometimes flavored with mint. The original energy drink. But not everyone's ah... cup of tea.

They don't seem to do their homework before visiting places or atleast ask their followers for suggestions. Or at the very least tell the cashier it's your first time and ask for reccomendations on what's popular. Popeye's is not know for their chicken tenders... in fact they are not good at all. Not enough chicken, and too much breading. That's why no one ever raves about their chicken tenders. Its whole pieces of chicken that they sell the most of.

Read and compare the ingredients for Jelly, Jam and preserves and you'll find that there's actually nothing different about them at all. They are labeled with different names as a marketing gimmick to appeal to the budget minded and discriminating tastes of the consumer. For example: "Jelly" is the least expensive and you'll find it in large containers, "Jam" is a little bit more pricey but sold in midsized containers, and Preserves are priced the highest and are available usually in small jars.

In the USA- Jelly is made from fruit juice. Jam from fruit puree. Preserves from whole fruit. Marmalade from fruit plus the rind. So you could have strawberry jelly made from strawberry juice, strawberry jam made from strawberry puree, strawberry preserves made from whole strawberries but not strawberry marmalade because strawberries do not have a rind or peel.

    • @Nimbus1701
      @Nimbus1701 2 роки тому +4

There is also various types of marmalade, and although I think it is different from what Joel and Lia are referring to, it may bridge the gap for them compared to anything else. I always find marmalade very hit or miss. Sometimes it is great and sometimes it really isn't and almost turns into a congealed half savory/half sweet spread. The only other thing I could think of to potentially suggest to them would be Apple butter, and only because of the consistency in the spread. I really haven't seen "apple butter" in a flavor other than apple, but I have seen different types of apple flavored butter as I live about 10 miles away from a local orchard that makes various types and flavors of apple pies, apple ciders, and apple butter from the different apples it grows locally in the orchard. It's a pity they didn't know you can ask for mild spice, since Louisiana flavors typically by default are spicy and not mild, but all the classic chicken offerings are offered in spicy or mild and every Popeye's I go to asks if you want spicy or mild.
Edit: I would suggest they try and find a Cracker Barrel as it serves types of "comfort foods", and serves breakfast and lunch/dinner options. More than that though, they would likely love the separate general store section from the dining room section. They also serve decent biscuits and decent cornbread and have options of various jelly, jams, and syrups.

It's not that jelly is 'American' for jam, lol. Jelly is jelly and jam is called jam. Jam has a bit of fruit pulp while jelly is made from only fruit juice. McDonald's has strawberry I think. I love the gravy at Popeyes because of the spices! Yes, Louisiana cuisine isn't really going to be Lia's favorite. They love herbs & spices and spicy hot food.

I’m from Arizona where we drink unsweetened ice tea or “sun tea”. I moved to the South a few years years ago and I still cannot drink the sweet tea here. It is so sweet. Please know this is primarily a southern beverage. If you were in Los Angeles it would be very hard to find sweet tea. I have met people here in Mississippi who have never heard of someone drinking tea without sugar in it. They did not know it was something people do. I’m still baffled by all of this. Sweet tea is also given to little kids like it’s water. I saw a young mom put it in a baby bottle for her toddler. By the age of 4 all of his teeth were rotten (not all moms do this just to clarify). Southerners are not kidding when they say they were raised on sweet tea.

My guess is there is a lot of great food she just won't like because it has what herbs of varying types but she would consider "spicy." all the Mexican food in the California, Arizona, All the good food in New Orleans. Jam and preserves are made by cooking down whole fruit with sugar and then preserving it with heat or by sealing out the air.
Jelly is made with juice to which pectin and sugar are added and then it's got to be canned (jarred) using a water bath or pressure canner.
They both contain huge amounts of sugar so it's hard to say which is 'healthier' but it's generally thought that since what we Americans call jam or preserves still has the whole fruit in it is has a better nutritional value.
The caveat is if it's home made verses store bought.
Home made is always going to taste better and most likely will be healthier.

All of those self serve machines have filtered water. It is usally a little black tab next to the ice lever or one of the other drinks.
And usually a (too small) label that says water.
You have to press it to "clear the line" of soda that it's normally mixed with, until it runs clear, and there is your clean, filtered water.
This was a learning curve for ALL of us when these machines came out, but since all are piped with water to make soda, they also all have a 'water only option"!
This applies to all fast food places, movies, or other places that have these self serve machines.
They pretty much have to offer regular water as an option because many people only drink it, or need it for baby formula mix, or any number of reasons.
Water is always an option, even if you have to look for the tiny lever or dig through the silly digital screen, it's always there.

That grape jelly is inexpensive, that's why it's at fast food restaurants.
Oh and the iced tea, when in the South, always, always get half sweet, half UNsweet mix. Especially if you aren't from the South. Because I'll tell you, in this vid, you unknowingly had southern sweet tea. It's not the same as sweet tea in the North. And up in the North, you'll have to ask for sweeten iced tea, or you are just as likely to recieve unsweetened iced tea or a cup of hot tea. Iced tea is really a southern thing. It was a reference to the toughness of the film's character. Omg, no honey on the biscuits? Popeyes is the bomb. The sweet heat sauce on the fries… amazing.
    The tenders are amazing also.
But during lint they have fish sandwiches. Omg, to die for! Love, love , love them. I wish they had them all year.
Oh shoot…… and their apple pies….. so yummmy! This is definitely for a cheat day.

    I didn't even know Popeye's HAD shrimp!
I'm starting to think they are trolling us by going to a place known for one very specific thing, then getting something completely off the wall and thereby missing the point and experience that everyone wants!
Ah well, still great viewing, just wish that they would find what the most popular thing is for these popular places and try it, even if just a bite.
In other words, don't go to Pizza hut and get a subway sandwich, or go to Subway and get a salad.
    Defeats the whole purpose.
But don't want them to get sick, sigh, just do you best darlings.

The whole dipping the biscuits in the gravy is different. It’s like making it into some kind of dumpling lol. I usually get the butter and honey from the cashier. Takes so good.

Jelly is different from jam because it's made with only the juice of the fruit, not the pulp. Other than pouring it through a sieve partway through it's basically the same process. Biscuits are like scones without egg in them. The egg in scones makes them dense and solid, without it a biscuit is much lighter and flakier.

Note to Lia: you can mix sweet tea with unsweet tea if it's too sweet (which it usually is, in my opinion). Restaurants in the South have both sweet and unsweet tea.

In America to qualify as a "burger" it has to contain ground meat (beef, chicken, pork or even fish, eq: salmon burger). If the meat is not ground, even when it is between two round shaped bread, it is called a sandwich.

Grape flavor is made from Concord grapes which are unique to America and they are EXTREMELY sweet. It’s not a snacking grape only for juice and jams.

The farther from Louisiana one gets the generally less good are Popeye's restaurants. Edit: It is usually because the food is insufficiently spiced in other parts of the USA. I can't tell if the one in Miami is like that.
Sweet tea is intended to be consumed with ice added. It cuts the sweetness, (no one here drinks it w/o ice because it's too sweet)
You can get honey to go on the biscuits but you have to ask for it.
Even the mild chicken at Popeye's is spicy compared to the USA average.
Actually, you CAN do Louisiana - you just have to pay attention and not order spicy dishes. Ask your waiter.
I also think the popcorn shrimp is too "fried".

I'm from Louisiana and you have to ask for mild if you want mild. The mild isn't full of cayenne pepper. Also if you don't want spicy mashed potatoes then you have to say no gravy because yes, all the gravy is spicy. I don't like things really spicy and you can definitely go to Louisiana and order stuff in many places that isn't spicy, some places you might just have to ask if they have mild instead of spicy.

There is decent jam in America. Unlikely to find it in restaurants, sadly. I'm glad Lia liked the Popeyes biscuits. They are definitely the star of the show at Popeyes for me. So buttery and delicious. I'll also say that while I like their chicken tenders, they're very different from the average fast food tenders, and I can see how some people don't enjoy them.
