I think tipping is better. You get the level of performance that you pay for.
Oftentimes on a very busy night in america, it's best to start out by laying a big tip on the table and letting the waiter or waitress know, that is currently your tip, poor service will make money get subtracted from that total

I worked with a Canadian who lived near the border with the USA. Whenever he and his wife had an important dinner (anniversary, St. Valentines Day, or whatever) they would drive across the border to eat at a restaurant in the USA. Yes, they needed to tip (Canada was definitely more like the UK about tipping at the time) but he could be assured they would get great service and if there were any problems the manager would fix them. Even with tipping, the USA restaurants were usually still less expensive than the equivalents in Canada. You were recently in Canada so should have some perspective on that.

The service in America would still be very good even without tips. There are many, many industries where employees aren’t paid through tips and the customer service is still top notch. Retail comes to mind. America is just big on customer service in general and the “customer is always right” mentality.

You are correct, Kat. When I started working at Lowes---part of our training is HOURS of computer training videos--most of them to teach us good customer service. This is HEAVILY emphasized--excellent customer service is extremely important with them...and we have to do refresher courses often on "SMART" customer service. (That's their acronym for it) And the thing is--it actually comes easy because once you engage the customer--you find that most people are open and friendly, and you develop a good rapport.

When in America, chose diners or meat and three restaurants based on recommendations from locals and the number of cars in the parking lot. The last time the hubby and I were in Texas, we asked locals to recommend restaurants and we only ate at those establishments. The locals were spot on. Knowing our Texas friend likes donuts, we wanted to take him a dozen. I asked a local which donuts are the best. I can’t remember the name of the donut shop, but we pick up a dozen and headed to our friend’s house. He was delighted to get the donuts, and he was amazed that we bought the best in Texas.

Back in the day when the Soviet Union was a thing, they sent their National Hockey team to the US for a tour along with dozens of KGB to make sure they didn't stray. This was a big deal as it was a first. Near the end of their tour the Soviet team and entourage was asked what was their favorite restaurant while in the US. Denny's won by a landslide much to the horror of the US snooty media. Why did they pick Denny's? It was because they could order by using the food pictures in the menu.

They did have to keep track of the name on the badge they were wearing. Some places also let the employees simply wear badges with a name other than their own but their choice. And Joel was right, you can always ask for more cream or whatever you want, no questions asked. As well, if you asked for some beans on you hash browns, if possible, which it probably is, they'd be glad to do it, for not much more money. Denny’s has a great memory for me. My parents liked the place. We didn’t go there as kids but when we became adults and we’d go out to eat while visiting Mom and Dad, we always went there for breakfast.
Now that Mom’s gone I remember it.
    Good comfort food.
When I visited Vegas, there was a Denny’s downtown. It was the only Denny’s I ever saw with a full bar.

I looked up the prices now and cannot get over the prices. They do offer an age discount still for 55+ And I noticed they do have a family breakfast to order. In old school Florida breakfast diners kids ate for free. Dennys were pretty reliable for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Ihops also good dinners

Yeah, guys. Feel free to ask for anything. Stateside, they WORK for tips. If you want more milk / creamers. Tea or soda to go. Ask and you'll probably get it. Ask for take out (to-go) boxes for anything you want to finish later, everyone does it. As for service, at very expensive restaurants, your tip % is higher, therefore your asks / requests can be higher. Don't be embarrassed, the worst thing is they say no.

Have you guys had the change to go to a Breakfast Buffet? Those are amazing if you can find a good one. "The Coke is flat." As a former restaurant server I would respond with a big "thank you!" Same goes with it being watery if the syrup is out. There is nothing worse than the Co2 in the soda machine being out or it just being flavorless. We would fix it right away.

The way the hash browns are cooked is in a huge line on the back of the flattop. They leave them until they get really crispy on the bottom and will hold together. Then they flip them and crisp them on the other side.

Sweet video. Denny's is middle of the road diner food because its's a chain restaurant. But it's a brick wall in the middle of the road. The service is good. The food is good after being out all night. It get's crowded there, but that's a good thing. Jump off the beaten path and you will find really good stick-to-your-ribs food. Eat your hearts out. Dieting on vacation is like watching a R-rated movie with your hands over your eyes.
Oops I forgot. Joel. Just ask them to cook the bacon more or less to your liking. Enjoy.

Love to watch the contrast between UK and the United States, restaurants, shopping, thanks great friends Joel & Lia.

  • @clemdane
    @clemdane 2 роки тому +4

What I found a bit confusing in restaurants in the UK is that there often wasn't a singular person who was assigned to wait on us. It sometimes seemed like we never saw the same person twice. So the usual thing where you're waiting to spot your particular waiter to ask for more tea or the dessert menu or the bill did not apply. You might as well just ask whoever the next person walking past. Which also made it harder to figure out a tip because who knew who it would go to?

    • @chrisk5651

Not sure if you've been to a Waffle House (or if you're still in the Southeast), but Waffle House has an amazing selection of hash browns. I think there are 6 different modifiers for them there. Also, Waffle house is well known for never closing. FEMA (the government agency that helps out during disasters) actually uses the status of Waffle House restaurants as an indicator of how bad the disaster is.

"The customer is always right, and when they aren't ... they still are." I used to work at a movie-theater (no 'tips' in that biz!), and when somebody complained about something - even when they were obnoxious about it - we always did whatever we could to 'make it right'. In the U.S., a business that doesn't operate on the "customer is always right" basis, gets a bad reputation, and probably won't be in business for very long!
