    The server has no say in regards to the temp of the restaurant. They could pass the temp complaint onto the manager but that’s about it really.

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому +3

      Well yes and no, if enough waitresses complain to the manager that the discomfort is affecting their tips, they may change it. Your tip reflects your entire experience, so it is up to the waitresses to do whatever they can to ensure it is comfortable, and if they can't then to make up for it with attentiveness and competency.

      You are correct. My daughter was a server for 2 years. She got that complaint all the time. The only thing she could do was tell management. They had a set temp at certain times of the year and it wasn't allowed to be changed. You can't fault your server for the temp in the restaurant. It's ultimately up to management.

    • @lunarikariko981

      @@Jack_Stafford you act like they have more power than they do. The air temp is not part of the servers job. I have worked in multiple restaurants that have the air conditioning controller locked. The management is the only ones that have the key and control the air conditioning. There could have been people also going behind her and turned the air conditioner backup because other people were complaining they were too hot. I love Jole and Lia but they're not the only ones there. I bring a sweater everywhere.

    • @perkibest22

      I was just thinking that. Changing your tip amount based upon the temp inside the restaurant isn't fair to the waitstaff/busboys/kitchen. I tip based on service alone.

    The reason the AC is usually so chilly in restaurants is so the cooks aren't falling over from heat exhaustion. Imagine how hot it would be if the AC was set so the rest of the place was a comfortable temp when they have all of those stoves, grills, and ovens going at once

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому +1

      And don't forget the wait staff who are constantly moving and carrying heavy dishes their entire shift, often wearing an uncomfortable uniform, you don't want them sweating onto your food. Also all of the lights and electronics, it's always good policy to have it a bit on the to cool side and then the reverse when things start to smell and sweat starts getting places it's not supposed to and the furniture gets clammy... Trust me it's always better for it to be a bit on the cool side. Dressing a loose long sleeve shirt that you can roll up the sleeves depending on your environment in your gold, especially in a desert environment and the Sun is so oppressive.

    • @malindastevens1016
      @malindastevens1016 5 років тому +1

      @@Jack_Stafford That is true! Not only are they running around and such but carrying hot plates of food which can easily make it feel like it's sweltering. I used to be a waitress but thankfully it was in a small mom and pop diner so I didn't have far to go so I didn't get overheated easily from running around and we didn't have uniforms, just had to dress appropriately.

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому

      @@malindastevens1016 I have a lot of respect for people that can run around all day long during hot dishes, or working in a kitchen, and especially dealing with the public. The least we can do is try to make their work environment comfortable so the rest of the key things can be done more easily. It wasn't that long ago that people were still smoking in restaurants and that made it even harder for the people that work there to be able to breathe clean air and try to do their job and go home smelling like smoke. That issue has been resolved, people just need to understand that often they are wearing a polyester corporate uniform of some type, the women usually have to wear makeup and all of that adds up to a lot of effort and working hard so it does need to stay cool, not to mention the kitchen and those that are cleaning the restaurant and busing the tables. Hard work!

      @@Jack_Stafford I work in a restaurant and hardly receive cash anymore. Maybe $20 a night if I'm lucky. Your tips, after tipping out the hosts, buses, and bar is given to you on a credit card which is taxed. So during the week I can bring home anywhere from $50 to $75 on average. On slow nights I've made as low as $30 after having only 3 tables, and on really busy weekends $100. It's actually a really slow time right now in this business. But you are totally right that you have to give great service to get more than 15%, however I give great service 99% of the time and still have people tip 10%. If we lived in Europe that would be fine, but since we live in a tip culture where servers receive $2.13 an hour, and never receive an actual paycheck, people have to be more considerate when tipping after good service. Unless something specific happened, if you go out to eat you should leave ideally around 18%, 15% minimum
      .

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому

      @@callahensley7355 I can't speak to your specific circumstances, just in my area around a large Midwestern City that anyone that works at a bar or restaurant that is successful at all is still getting $100 in cash tonight, but you are correct some of that needs to go to the Busboys Etc. If a tip is put on a credit card and of course that is a whole different situation. But the places I go to very often there is a tip put on the credit card and then money also put on the table by other people that aren't paying the full bill, if the service was great, why not leave a few dollars additional? But even using your example, if you had the $75 in cash to the tips that are put on the bill, it still sounds like the tips add up to a very decent amount. And again if people decide to claim their cash earnings they have the choice that other workers don't.

      I think of it as guiding these two, as they seem so often displeased by the Prosecco they are served when their British supermarket's private label is not at hand. Prosecco is neither a grape variety nor a specific wine, but a DOC (region of n/e Italy) with wines made to suit a range of sweetness, dizziness and a bit of variation in flavors. Oops, there I go again. Scuzzi.

      I just heard about a study that on average people can handle about a dozen choices anything past that tends to just confuse them. So if that long of a menu people read the first few things and then just start skimming and not really reading it, so they really should pair it down to a much smaller menu, concentrate on some outstanding specialties, and have a side menu for typical things such as hamburgers hot dogs french fries for people that are hard to please. For a big restaurant I would say 20 entrees tops, it would make the service faster and more consistent, keep the amount of things you have to keep in stock radically smaller and just really make the entire thing more efficient. At any kind of restaurant 90% of the people are either going to get the chicken fish or steak, so concentrate on during your version of those very well. Having a long menu just really delays the ordering process as everybody tries to read and pick out and change their mind Etc. You have cheesecake in your name so you can have a large variety there but everything else needs to really be on point, well made and delivered in a timely fashion.

    My mother was a career waitress for over 40 years. I know how food service should be. That kind of service I would have had the manager come over. The manager would have made amends somehow maybe Prosecco on the house maybe your meals on the house or reduced for too long of a food wait. 30 mins for a table wait is really not that bad. There are Cheesecake Factories in New England I've never had to wait like that for table or food...but California is full of tourists I think more than New England so there are long waits everywhere there. The food is unbelievably great but with that kind of service I wouldn't even have tipped 15%. Although sometimes it's not the wait staff's fault it's the kitchens for the long wait but you should have called the manager over.🍰🥂🍽

    Lia, I totally related to you about the name! I always thought that this restaurant only served cheesecake and other cakes so I never went to it! Finally a friend told me that they have a full menu. I felt that their name is completely misleading! I hope you only tipped 15 percent as the service was way too slow! Maybe if you went at a time when they weren't so busy the service would be faster. Generally speaking, I would recommend that you stay away from chain restaurants in the US and patronize locally owned restaurants. Chain restaurants are the same all across America and are usually owned by huge corporations. Locally owned restaurants tend to serve fresher ingredients and often specialize in the cuisine of their region. Thanks for an enjoyable program! As always, take care and Happy Travels! ♥️🇬🇧🇺🇸 P.S. • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому

      I think 30 minutes is on the top end of how long you should wait in line, an hour out of somebody's time in a tourist City like Las Vegas is worth a lot, and restaurants have to do a better job of managing their time, and at the prices they're charging they should take reservations for instance , if they are consistently that busy they should be able to afford to expand so that people have to wait as long, and if still there's an issue with wait times give people a realistic assessment so they can decide whether to wait or to go someplace else that has better grown their business with the amount of demand. 30 minutes sitting in a Lobby to stay out of the heat when you're hungry is really a pretty long time.

      Dale Stafford Cheesecake Factory is literally a giant nationwide chain. They are always busy, because they are so popular. Also, they do give you an estimate of how long the wait is. AND they give you a buzzer with a bit of a range, so you can walk around, and don’t have to just sit in their lobby.
      They just don’t take reservations. But I don’t think it would be worth their time to. Missed reservations, and even late arrivals would cost them more than someone walking away because they don’t want to wait. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      20% is not typical, 20% is for great service. I think they were right with a 15% because although the service was a bit off, they didn't say the waitress was outright rude and the orders were correct just slow. If 20% is the standard, then are you advocating paying 25 or 30 for excellent service? A quarter or third of your entire bill which would easily pay for a whole nother meal? That is not standard... And the simple fact that half of the people are going to be too warm and the other half are going to be too cold, so you always err on being too cold ( especially in a desert climate) because they can always add a layer, but you don't want a restaurant full of people sweating, smelling up the restaurant and leaving residue on the furniture and attempting to take off clothes that they probably shouldn't in public, like their shoes which I have seen. So between the two evils, too cool is definitely the Preferred Choice.
      For restaurants particularly being too warm makes people less hungry and sleepy, and is going to add smells to the restaurant that's going to affect the taste of the food and frankly if it's not like a refrigerator a lot of people immediately would turn around and walk out. They have to battle heat coming out of the kitchen in the middle of a desert so they pour on the cold air thank goodness! Who wants their waiter dripping sweat in their food on the way to the table, are running around all night long and people tend not to think of the staff when they think of the temperature, the cooks in the waiters are working up a sweat, and often have to wear uncomfortable uniforms. Wear loose long sleeves that you can roll up and down which is a good idea in the Desert Sun anyway.

So if you do want hot tea it's just never going to be a very good tasting option, because you may be the only person that day that ordered it and it's just not feasible for the restaurant to stock something that is just not going to be ordered very often especially in a hot climate. Just like I couldn't expect a British restaurant to give me enough ice ever in a soft drink, I know it's just part of the culture and wouldn't expect it of every restaurant I went into. Who could get angry @ you too?! 😄
    The waitress should have explained why your food was late!!! (The tip was appropriate due to her lack of communication)
    Fyi, the wait to be seated and the a/c are not her fault. They are out of her control. You should always discuss those issues with the manager.

    The first time I went to the Cheesecake factory I had a cheesecake meal. First, I had mango cheesecake as an appetizer, then I had coffee cheesecake for dinner and for dessert I had lemon cheesecake. O God, that lemon cheesecake was so tart.

    Glad you liked it. good middle- of- the- road restaurant. Tend to be located at shopping malls. I cannot believe they did not bring out the main courses at the same time. Tragedy 😬

      But I think they paid higher-end restaurant prices, Cheesecake Factory for two people should not cost you the better part of $80 when you factor in tip and taxes. When you get into $40 a person territory that normally is a very nice sit-down restaurant that is quiet and takes reservations ... often with some kind of entertainment as well.

      @@Jack_Stafford I believe they said $54. 2 entrees, a dessert, 2 drinks....sounds reasonable

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 5 років тому +1

      @@hillcountryhick4639 I had to re-watch, but He says st 6:59 the bill was $58.71, I would expect the drinks to be included with the entrees like at most restaurants, but yes the desert was probably extra.
      Still sounds a bit steep, at cheap restaurants/diners we usually budget about $10 a piece and at Mid to kind of nice restaurants you should be able to eat for about $20 a piece. Unless you were getting top-of-the-line steak or lobster obviously, then you're lucky to get out of there under $100.
      But for just salmon and a sandwich and sharing a piece of cake... I'm sorry I can't justify the price. Not to mention the total after tip being right at about *$70* .
      I think that's a bit shocking, especially considering the Fantastic endless buffets that would probably be cheaper, wider variety, as much as you'd like to eat, and no need to tip (except optionally a couple dollars on the table if someone brings you your drinks).
      But I guess in their case the saving grace would be the positive pound to dollar conversion which makes it more affordable, for them anyway! :-)

    That look you had, Joel! Haha. Ive had a piece of chocolate cake there. Amazing! 15% is a good tip to me. We give 20% to only the best best. 10% to terrible service.

    It's mainly marketed towards Americans who for the most part know they sell more than cheesecake. But I walked in there expecting only cheesecake and found that they had so much more food id be pleasantly surprised.

    When you said you ordered tea, I was worried they were going to bring you iced tea, which is black tea, I think, and unless you're in the South, is unsweetened. In tthe South, it is almost cloyingly sweet. It's like the sweeter they make it the better, or so some people say.
    I love the Cheesecake Factory! The name, I suspect, comes from cheesecake being their specialty. All their food that I've tried is so, so good. My favorite meal was the tex mex eggrolls. Sooo delicious.
    Dang it, now I want Cheesecake Factory!

    They've got this new thing called the "Internet." It allows you to see a restaurant's menu from the comfort of your room/home to see if they make dishes you'd like to try. 🤣

    When I used to wait tables, we used to hate when Europeans came in. They notoriously never tip well, if at all. The staff would always play paper rock scissors with the loser having to wait on them.

    • @ThoseTwoBrits1

      haha I've heard that before! On the other hand, British waiters fight over who gets to serve the Americans because they tip loads!

    • @vodriscoll
      @vodriscoll 5 років тому

      That's because in much of Europe servers actually get a decent wage so the tip is only for great service. In the US, servers get a tiny wage and most of them need tips to survive. I live close to Quebec Canada border where tax on food there is 15.5%. So Canadians there tip whatever the tax is. When they come to my city in upstate, NY, where the tax is 8% on food, they tip 8% instead of 15%, so our servers hate waiting on them. Many restaurants here have the suggested tip printed at the bottom of the receipt.
