- 2016 Mustang GT 5 things you MUST do
1.) Exhaust (axle-back or cat-back) I run Corsa Xtreme Cat-Back
2.) Suspension (lowering springs) I run BMR SP080
3.) Wheels/Tires or Spacers (I run 23/25MM spacers and have custom wheels on the way)
4.) Window Tint (I have 20% rear and 30% front)
5.) Short Throw Shifter (I run a Barton Hybrid 3 short shifter)
These mods apply to the 2015 Mustang GT, 2016 Mustang GT, 2017 Mustang GT, and 2018 Mustang GT.
I could have made this list longer, but this video was meant to address just some of the first few things you should modify.

First thing: own a mustang GT
My first mod for any car has always been TINT
+TheReal NateDogg mine surprisingly came with it on my s550.
Jeff Ashton some dealerships will install the tint. Makes sense yours is a lighter percentage. I have 5% on the back 3, 15% on the doors and 45% on the entire windshield hahahaha
Mine came with tint as well, but apparently it was double what was illegal in my state. (I bought the car from an in state dealer, who purchased it from someone who lived out of state) Got that removed, and hope to get legal tint soon!
My list...
1- exhaust
2- tinted windows
3- lowering springs
4- wheel spacers
5- cold air
6- add hp with some stickers!!!
Jerry and Kelly's Living Life #6 FTW. 😂
Shouldn't #6 be higher on the list maybe like 1st or 2nd lol
#5. cold air? you mean it has no a/c?
Master Wrong cold air intake
my list had my car since 2015
1. steeda rear braces to elminate wheel hop
2. lowering springs or coilovers to eliminate some roll and improve handling
3. exhaust or deletes to let everyone hear your coyote
4. tires and wheels, aluminum wheels that allow for more width and contact patch when applying more rubber
5. sway bars to improve overall handling in turns and under hard acceleration
best mods for overall performance, before adding power
My list.
1. WIndow tint
2. Subwoofer. (regret this since i got the next mod)
3. Flowmaster Outlaw cat-back.
4. GT350R Steering Wheel. (will be in shipped and installed tomorrow, really excited)
Great vid!
1. My first mod was tires, a slashed sidewall forced me to.
2. I live in Arizona so, probably tint.
3. Exhaust
4. Some weathertech or similar floormats.
5. Maybe get a chevy bowtie license plate for the front.
i did all of those mods, but one of the most important in my book was to get rid of the wheel hop. Big difference!
Here's the order i did everything.
1. Tints (Like you, i cant stand a fish bowl car. Makes my skin crawl lol)
2.Exhaust
3.Wheels & Tires
4.Suspension
5.Intake/Tune
James Brandon very nice! #nofishbowl 😂
What Intake do you recommend for 18 GT? Was looking into Roush cause it has the tube to insert to rune stock tune and then later down the road tune and open intake to 105mm.
Awesome video Jeff, enjoying your UA-cam channel. I just got my first mustang. 2017 GT California Special which I picked up used and PO did a cold air intake and exhaust. It came with upgraded wheels from Ford but I’m not a huge fan. Was thinking lowered Springs and wheels/tires next. What size wheel and tires do you recommend if also lowering Springs?
I bought a Roush Stage 2 I'm not sure if it comes with the same shifter as the premium GT or not but it's not too bad my list was #1.x pipe resonator delete #2.windows tinted along with all my lights then#3. Kooks long tubes with cold air intake and a tune.#4 eibach Sportline lowering springs#5. New tires I went with the Nitto G2 all the way around
Yep, I agree with this list Jeff. I did the FRPP by Borla catback first then MRR GT350 wheels 19x10 front and 19x11 rear wrapped in Conti's 275x35 and 325x30 then the Eibach lowering springs. My verts an auto so no shifter and she still needs tint. So far just a SCT tune and intake tube but the twin turbos are coming...
Good video Jeff, I'll take a look at the new site....
Concrete GT awesome start! Get that tint. 😁
First thing I did man, CORSA EXTREME CATBACK!!!! Love it.
Awesome brother . Can you share some other cool stuff? Also what's the nastiest loudest exhaust I can put on it. Also should I put long tubes
Jeff! Tint should be #2 man definitely.. its cheap/easy and has a major impact on the exterior look
Felipe Lobos' it definitely deserves to be up at the top!
So my first mods were actually a JL Audio stealth box sub and window tint. Haha.
I always like getting the comfort/ luxury upgrades done first with my cars. But the next thing I'm getting into mine is progressive lowering springs and then exhaust so yeah... pretty on point i think.
What mud flaps are you running? The ones iv seen either look bad, or look like they would scrape if you lowered the car.
1-exhaust
2-wheels and tires
3-Tint
4-Suspension
5-intake and tune
3 outta 5 are done for my S550.
Which model do you have though? If I get a GT Performance in manual with the better struts, springs, etc from factory, do you still recommend mods?
i can agree with your top first 5. the windows were tinted when i bought it a month ago. i just put wheels and tires on this weekend. i'm searching for the right exhaust. still undecided. probably do off road x first. but i think the oil catch can should be at least top 8 lol. good video. keep it up buddy
wescopeland1 thanks man! I could've easily made this first 10 but It would've become an hour long video lolll. I'll probably do a follow up video on the future because there are a lot of other great mods.
wescopeland1 my first exhaust on my mustang was just a axle back MBRP exhaust black finish it's very loud and can be louder the more u do to it. Inexpensive and takes like 20min to install
on my 2011 first mod was the shifter, its what you use the most and then roush axle back, i love it. then was the wheels
Great video Jeff 👍🏻
Nader S thanks Nader! 🙌
Is anyone else's Barton hybrid 3 a little tricky to shift?. Mine doesn't like low RPM shifts. When I'm giving it the beans it shifts really Ez and smooth. Sometimes hard to get into 2nd. Running the Amsoil bomb for trans oil.
Great suggestions Jeff. I always love watching your videos. I just got my 2017 GT Premium Performance Package a couple weeks ago, pushing 400 miles now. Being in Florida, my first priority was the tint. Then I decided to do the CJs black emblem package, and AMs MMD black rear spoiler to complete the black and blue look with the PP wheels. Next week I am going to add the DD sequential taillight kit and driving light switchbacks. Excellent idea on the splash guards... Which brand did you install on yours?
I think I'll wait until I get a couple more hundred miles on the car before starting anything serious, but am considering the cat-back, lowering springs, and wheel spacer ideas you suggested. I really like how your wheels are offset. Need to start saving some $$$. suggestions. Always love your

Eric Nelson thank you! I'm jealous that you got Lightning Blue it's an amazing color. I'm running the ZL1addons rock guards.
I may get an 2015 gt auto. Would your recommend supercharger or turbo
Don't forget Full Tilt Boogie Racing IRS bushings to get rid of that stock wheel hop. nice video brother.
+KyleSVT thanks man! IRS bushings are definitely a good one.
15% Tint √
eibach sportlines with maximum Motorsports camber caster plates√
steeda frame alignment kit was a must for mine. Car looked funky on some photos before the install.
went with MMD Vseries spoiler and MMD hood scoops. love the ppack wheels so I added a touch with red Rim Ringz. next the spacers and will hit you up for the Corsa Xtreme soon
Very nice! Definitely some solid choices/additions. :)
thoughts on which type of tune??? i was looking at ford power pack 2 so i keep warranty 😋
My 1st mod on my 2016 was tint, then exhaust, in process of wheels and tires, next springs, after that idk haha
Hey guys I'm looking into a 2016 mustang GT premium with 6k miles at a dealer for 30k. Anyone know around how much the price can come down? Or anyone have tips on how to bargain with a dealer?
My 2017 Auto Convertible S5.0 fully loaded for UK spec (which is nothing compared to your cars)Has arrived after a long 11 months wait !!! but I have ready and waiting in my Garage 1/Roush Axle backs. 2/Hood Rams. 3/Ford Black Engine Cross Brace and Bulk head.4/ BlackVue Dash Cam and then once I Have run the car lowering springs.5/Wheel Spacers.6/LED interior/exterior Dio Dynamics's bulbs then who know what Keep up the great reviews.
Very nice Aidan! Congrats on getting your Mustang, 11 months is definitely a long wait but I'm sure it was worth it.
Thanks I did pretty much the same to my 2005 Mustang GT Vert which sadly went yesterday having owned from new in the UK and was one of the very 1st Converted to Right Hand Dive but loved it .One other Mod is the rear and quarter windows will get Limo Tint and maybe Tint the rear Lights (Smoke) the Front not allowed over here .
Aidan Killoran you had the 05 for a while! At least it has a worthy replacement, always a sad day when you let one your stangs go.
Could listen to that exhaust sound all day!!!
I'm here to find out what to buy for my hub's 2006 mustang. His bday is coming. He loves his car. I'm thinking about buying him the dual exhaust. Not sure
the roush one way set up works great for me ride quality is great.also rear cradle and diff lockout bushings.
+Sean R. Cradle lockout has definitely been one of my favorite mods.
Novice question; why not the Ford Performance Track suspension/lowering kit?
My list
1. Tint
2. Ceramic coating the paint
3. USB port swap, so u can update sync 3 to run carplay and android auto
4. Wing... Car desperately needs a wing
5. Quick latch pins for 2015-2017 cars
You should really wait on suspension and exhaust until you figure out what you want to do... Springs on stock struts will shorten, the life of the shocks.
I agree the first 5 mods but I did little different
Exhaust
Wheels and tires and spacers
X pipe
Headers
CIA
And much more.
Nader S definitely a great start, it's easy to substitute some stuff. Could've made this video 10 things.
Best part about this video is ASH Mans wife and her facial expressions lol great video!!!!!!
Flowmaster outlaw catback on my 2017 GT sounds mean, I definitely feel you on the fish bowl look!
+Raww Delgado gotta have that tint! I'm just glad FL isn't strict with its tint laws.
+1 on the Flowmaster Outlaw catback, 3" stainless.
Just got my GT two weeks ago, and will be following this list closely. I plan on getting the Borla ATAK next weekend, do I need to get a new cold air intake at the same time? (Money constraints) if so, what would recommend? Thanks
railzip awesome man, that's great! You don't need to do an intake at the same time. I've got some ATAK systems in-stock ready to ship too! www.ashtonperformance.com
+Jeff Ashton that's awesome, I will order when I get back from my trip
Power pack 3 tune and exhaust. Maybe some longube headers also, those are my three must haves lol
Yeah, I don't know, I kind of like the way my 5.0 was when it came off back of the truck.
currently sitting on 20" wheels, which is making the spacers and/or suspension mods harder. it's a real balancing game.
MR Photography it always is! 😁
I've got c&l racer cold air intake and roush axle back/ heartthrob x pipe and that shit is so loud and crackling. CAI probably added a 10% boost to the volume lol
TehZured solid setup! 👍
I think id love to add to the must do mods, the first three mods i always hear about are Intake, Tune, Exhaust
1 cold air intake
2 full exaust system which includes long tube headers, H or X pipe and axle back
3 ECU tune
4 coilovers / lowering springs
5 wheels and tires
Are you related to the Ashton attorney in Orlando who got his pickle in Ashley Madison?
which mud guard/flaps did you use?
1- Tint
2- exhaust (just the x-pipe for cost-effectiveness, unless you have the $$)
3- oil splitter. you gotta take care of the engine
4- lowering spring
5- rims and tires
Link to the mudflaps?
My list
Exhaust (solo performance)
Tints (20% on fronts 5% on rear 3 windows)
To come
lower and spacers
yes would love to see some painting for the average joe out there.thanks
+Sean R. I'll definitely do that with the calipers and follow it up with some stuff on the fox.
Absolutely beautiful
So here I am having insomnia and start watching the Ash man taking about mods on the old stang and suddenly I don't care about sleep now. Also the first mods I ever did on my mustangs was exhaust cold air
+David KEMENESI haha 😂 you can call me the sleep doctor. Solid first mods!
Jeff Ashton got my Ashton performance sticker an shirt ordered but where's the love for the bigger fans Jeff I need my 4xL shirt!!!!!!
David KEMENESI I have 4XL in gray did you want to switch it before I ship it out today?
Jeff Ashton I ordered the 4XL so just throw it in with the others and thank you sir!!!
David KEMENESI got it thanks again David! You'll have the tracking shortly.
Watching less TJ and LZ and more of this. Good content.
What exhaust do you have on this video?
Is anyone that you know trying the Roush coil-overs? I'm curious how much of a difference they make to the handling/lowering of the S550.
Bryan Hallman I don't have experience with them personally yet, but Roush makes nothing short of great products. While they are expensive I'm sure they are worth every penny.
I ask. because, they claim that it's possible to run their 275/35R20 wheel/tire package squared stance using the coil overs, and not need spacers.
Is this in heathrow woods fl or longwoods?
What song you use at 8:15? I need it in my next video. Great vid boss!
I'm not sure the name, I have a subscription service for a bunch of royalty free music. I'll see if the name is listed and I'll post back.
Name of song: I Like To
*I'm buying a 2018 MGT*
*with all Options*
*Install Stage 3 Power Pack*
I guess my first mod would be to buy a mustang gt in the first place! ;)
2016 Roush RS3
My first mods were:
1) Wheels and Tires
2) Drilled Rotors
3) MGW Shifter
4) JLT Intake and Catch Can
5) Kooks Headers
6) Roush X Pipe
7) VMP Tune
TheManicorn very well done! ✅
Any more hints on what wheels you went with? LOL
TheManicorn
How much rwhp?
It's never been on a dyno. Assuming 15% powertrain loss...and based on other dyno pulls on stock RS3's I would assume its making in the 600 range to the wheels.
TheManicorn ?
i always thought the reason for a cat back was to get less restriction which means better performance
Eibach springs
Nitto nt555/wheels
Lund tune/cai
Splitter
spoiler
I think the GT350 steering wheel and a quality catback exhaust are mandatory.
I'm surprised your first mod wasn't catch can or oil separator
Problem with the spacers is they push the tire offset last the point of full contact. Did that with the 25mm spacers
....tires wore awfully bad on the inside and barely on the outside. just get wheels for a flush look. 10.5 in the rear and 9.5 up front👍
+Andrew Andrew never had any issues. Did you have your alignment checked? If so what were your specs?
Jeff Ashton Alignment was perfect. it's just the way it is. The inside of the tread obviously gets the bulk Of The weight of the car. Front and rear wear really convinced me to get wheels after my PilotSports were ruined. I've never seen a 1 inch spacer do anything different so I can't complain.
1-Oil catch can
2-Exhaust
3-Intake
4-Springs
5-Sway bars
Did my exhaust, springs, and wheels & tires so far!
1. exhaust
2. tint
3. lower springs
4. Cai ( ford power pack 2)
5. carbon fiber drive shaft
Exhaust suspension rims tint and idk..
what about a tune ? Or do you feel out of the box the GT mustangs are ok ?
+Bmere 828 definitely a solid mod, just didn't make my first 5.
Do people not mod for performance anymore? I think not doing intake/tuner first is insane. You honestly don't want 40+ more HP to the wheels right outta the gate? The rest is just show (and that's fine) but don't we buy these cars primarily for the GO? Maybe it's just me.
+Retro Game Lounge not first on my list and most people's because of warranty. I'm boosted now, but wanted to make sure my car wasn't a lemon before going all in. Checkout my other 5 mods video I just released you'll probably like that one more. 👍😁
1. Exhaust
2. Intake Manifold
3. Cold Air Intake
4. Tune
5. Springs
CAI and tune, exhaust those are the first mods you should do
Jare Bear Both are great mods! 👍
^^^This is the correct answer.
I just got a brand new 2015 GT will getting any of theses mods void the warranty
+Stefon Grisby Ford will not warranty any damage that is in result of a part you added.
flowmaster American Thunder cat back exhaust with X pipe is the flowmaster scavenger Injen cold air intake Bama tuner Spec-D headers no cats will not lower my car got the mud flaps need to get my GT 350 intake manifold GT 350 throttle body looking at some new rims got the new tune when I get manifold on doing the Gt 350 half shafts one piece driveshaft need to put my new trunk lid from mmd painted guard on speed mesh hood vents steeda hood struts trunk wing it a 2015 GT Premium Auto my car is in one of mustang lifestyle videos
The first thing i recommend people to do is get rid of the AWFUL wheelhop. Like with Ford racings aluminium bushings. I hage the wheelhop.
Other than that i agree with you.
Exhaust first for sure.
Then lower spring or bags
Wheels
Cold air intake
Black out lights/windows
When you said short throw I got mad at myself cause obviously I knew that should be before the intake.
Just tuned mine so far
I really want to trade in my ecoboost for a gt now. If I had a gt I'd put on some corsa extreme cat back with long tubes just like scoots car
Then you'll really be like McScoots if you do! He started with his EcoBoost then switched to the GT.
Great vid Jeff. I always go with the basic 3 - exhaust, intake, tune. Then louvers. But after having my s550 for 2 years now, I must say the first mod should be ditch the shitty pirelli tires. They are a safety hazard and overpriced.
1234zcrom yeah the pirellis are crap. Glad to see that are switching to some Michelins for 2018.
1:Window tint
2:exhaust
3cold air
4:wheels
5:lowering springs
My list:
1: Shifter
2: Rear LED backup light (stock is soo dim)
3: PUT SOME FOAM IN BETWEEN YOUR SEAT AND CONSOLE..............THE "PHONE ABYSS" IS THERE.........PROTECTED BY
GERMAN-SHARPENED SEAT RAILS.
4: Coil overs
5: Tune
Edit: I work late..........exhaust is fine......will go H pipe resonator delete.
Don't mess around with lowering springs on stock shocks/struts. I learned the hard way, you may think the ride is ok , but put on some better shocks and the ride is dramatically better. I did eibach pro springs on stock and the ride was terrible, installed some koni yellows and my goodness, the car is amazing now, so planted around corners. I did all this and castor/camber plates as the first mod on my car, even before the exhaust. The car is on rails now. Oh yea, it's a performance pack GT.
+Greb Nitty ? I've run lowering springs on all of my cars and never had a single issue. The SP080 paired with the performance pack shocks is an amazing combo.
The performance pack shocks are just the same shocks that come on any GT mustang. And I'm sure your car rides fine, but for me I could tell right away that I didn't like the way it felt. It was way rougher then stock, didn't feel right. The konis really cleaned up the ride, especially if you have it set to full soft. To each their own :)
Greb Nitty The PP shocks/springs are different from the base GT.
Ok, well I guess Ford slipped that one by me when I bought my 17 because no where did it say the shocks were upgraded, only the springs. Go to build and price and read the details of the performance package, it just says heavy duty front springs, unique chassis tuning, k member brace, heavy duty sway bars, and few other things, didn't say anything about shocks. But , maybe you are right. Either way, super happy with my konis. Enjoy the mustang man, best car to own, this my third. Ciao.

Exhaust

Jeff Ashton Performance T-Shirt 😎
Damn, how did I forget the t-shirt lol! It's worth at least 50 HP not to mention the weight savings versus a standard t-shirt.
The white T's add more hp and Grey T's add more torque hahaha
Exactly, that's why you need both. Buttttt that red shirt though, now that thing is just straight magical.
First mod: trade it in for a Gen6 SS 1LE?? Am I right:)?
LoLz :P
Jeff Ashton, lol..just f'ng with you bro
I know that's why I did the lollercopter haha.
I see you live in Lake Mary
I can't wait to buy one , I'm buying one soon.
+Basem Korin awesome, let me know when you do! 👍
Jeff Ashton I will 👍 but I might wait for the 2018 , we'll see
guessed #1🤩
Tune!
Agent. K. Tunes are good! 😁
I had to get rid of the awful wheel hop first.
Good call Gabe - I did add a BMR cradle lockout kit to my car very quickly!
I've done everything except the shifter. The complicated install scares me
Christian it's not bad at all just a little time consuming.
It seems like you're a little more on the appearance mod side than performance. Here's my list......
1. Exhaust
2. Cold Air Intake
3. Headers
4. Throttle body
5. And tune
Got to go with performance first! Make that little pony run!
Tint, Michelin Pilot Super Sport, GT350 manifold & throttle body, PMAS intake, tune... that's all I need to make mine sing to 8k RPM, without being loud. I'm not a child anymore. I don't need your attention
+MrCYChung very nice mods! I didn't chose my exhaust for attention, I just simply love the sound and the extra flow.
How about a one piece drive shaft?
Scotty N great mod, just didn't make my first 5. I'll be upgrading mine soon! 👍
For performance purpose, prioritize starting from the ground up. Tires, wheels, suspension, chassis, brakes, exhaust, engine, transmission then finally interior/exterior visuals. Spacers will eff up your car, I wouldn't do it.
Matthew Nguyen spacers aren't effing anything up lol.
Decrease springs, brake, and steering performance, more stress on axle's stud, bearings. Keep using it and your wheel will fall off all the sudden while on high speed.
i have all 5 on my 2016 gt :)
lftFILMS solid! 👊
DBP ALWAYS FIRST BABY!
DerekBaranProductions you my boi blue!!! 🚙
Oil catch can should be number one
1. Thicker tires
2. Exhaust
3. Headers
4. Intake
5. Break ducts (cheap mod)
