This song hit me hard, my grandfather was gassed by the Germans in the first world war. Mustard gas. He still volunteered in the second war as a guard security guard in a german detention facility before I was born. This song made me cry but in a good way.

I hear you, bud, had two relatives: one died at the Somme, the other was wounded, lost his left eye, and was sent back home. The first use of chemical weapons was bromine gas. By 1916, the creation of mustard gas was in full effect. Both great-grandparents were from northern towns, and these boys really did pay the ultimate price.

So sad 😢. What a waste of life. I know we have to fight for our freedom but it's just a waste of young lives. Thanks Maria and hope you enjoy my videos.
I feel I should point this out because this is fairly specific and somewhat esoteric but downright creepy if you know it: There is an empty 1910s cabriolet in a beautiful ecru colour in the street and the "parade" flows around it This is the car of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. This is the car both he and his wife Sophie bled to death in Sarajevo in June 1914. In a very real sense this was a pale horse and on it rode Conquest and in it's wake followed War and Hunger and Pestilence. The July Crisis was the final chapter of what we refer to as "Europe's final summer" and we know what came after and Sir Edward Grey had the truth of it when he said that "The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time[...]". As a European and as a historian this has moments of scaring the living sh#t out of me because as of right now the long peace is gone and over, yes *The Yugoslav Succession Wars* where horrible but the did not involve any of "The Powers" - this one involves pretty much *every one of them* , and it causes me the occasional freak-out because of the sheer volatility inherent in this proxy war on European soil. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
