Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Re Floor's vocals, I've read that her range for singing is C3 to F6, and she also does growls. Contemporary, classical, belting, Floor pretty much sings whatever the hell she wants to sing, truely one of the most versatile sings out there.
Every song of Nightwish will give you different vibes and a different experience. From balads to really heavy metal you will allways get the total symphonic metal package. Floor is out of this world and a once in a lifetime singer. Have fun in your long journey into Nightwish.
Also, light accoustic songs, jazz, celtic folky metal, and even some full-on orchestral symphony pieces without lyrics as well.

Oh, and they did some amazing covers in early shows, including an epic tribute version of Pink Floyd's High Hopes that was liked by Pink Floyd.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish. The band is from Finland, 3rd and current lead singer Floor Jansen(Yan-sen) is Dutch.
The mastermind is the keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen. He writes and composes 90-95% of the songs. Also on stage here are drummer Jukka Nevalainen, guitarist 'Emppu' Vuorinen, and bassist Marko Hietala. Tuomas and Emppu are founders, and with Floor, are the 3 still in the band today.
There is an orchestra, but it's on track, recorded with the London Philharmonic.
All 15 songs at this show were recorded with one of the first 2 lead singers, Floor had only been in the band about 10 months here in front of 82k fans, having taken over mid tour. She added her touches , including the ending on this, and made them her own. Ghost Love Score is #13 on the setlist.
You can't go by this one song, every song is different. This is their 3rd longest song to date. 9 full albums out, # 10 will be released in September.

I love people`s first time hearing this song, they do this song in all their concerts. I`ve probably seen it performed over 1.000 times over the years and I know that it is an old song from the days that Tarja was the singer but man Floor knocks it out of the ballpark every time!!
First time i heard this song last summer i bought the CD the next day Showtime Storytime which is this whole concert , my favs are Storytime, Ever Dream, Song of Myself all from this concert and I Want My Tears Back from Buenos Aires
Her solo projects are a great place to check out her instrument in a metaless setting. Her solo performance of Shallow on Beste Zangers 2019 which basically introduced her to an entire new audience is a great example.

This was from Wacken (pronounced Vah-ken) Open Air, which is the largest metal festival in the world. The festival takes place in the small village of Wacken, Germany.

Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. And Yesterwynde is the upcoming tenth studio album, and is set to be released on 20 September 2024 by Nuclear Blast.

Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. Floor Jansen is Dutch and stands 6ft and a bit tall. Studied at the Rock Academy Tilburg (city in The Netherlands) for 4 years (rock and metal). After she did a year Musical Theatre and a year Belcanto at the conservatory. She started singing in a band called After Forever at age 16 and worked for a few years as a vocal coach. She took over as a lead singer for NW in 2011, when the former singer quit in the middle of the American Tour. She finished the tour as a substitute and officially joined NW a year later. She's been NW's leadsinger since. She's the mother of 2 and married to Hannes van Dahl, the drummer of the band Sabaton. She lives in Sweden. You can also find a lot of solo work of her on YT and she appears regularly in albums of Ayreon (musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen). She's also done some singing for other bands, like Sabaton and Evergrey.

Nightwish's songs range from lovely ballads to songs with a definite Celtic influence to music that is pure metal. The keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen is the composer, lyricist and poet behind most of the music for the band. you will find that every song is different, and there isn't a bad song in the bunch. No two Nightwish songs are the same, and Floor is one of the most versatile vocalists out there, truly world class! All of the band are masters of their instruments and the song writing and how tight the band are is what makes this band really stand out.
No egos here, they put everything into the song playing just what is needed and no more. When they are not contributing to the song they fade away to the back to give the limelight to those who are contributing at that moment in time. This is why during the orchestral 'interlude' half way through they all left the stage
This song is usually recommended to people new to Nightwish and Symphonic Metal to demonstrate what this sub genre of Metal is all about, the fusion between standard Metal instruments, (Guitars, drums and keyboards) and symphonic instruments (orchestra and choirs). It gives a much richer sound and the music is composed end to end, not just your usual songs
To hear something more like standard Metal, I would recommend the song 'Romanticide' from this same concert. I think that you will like it

All their songs are different but you will recognize their sound as soon as they start to play.!
Not all their songs are epic 10min+ ones but, each and every song is a journey of it's own each with it's own story and flavor. You get the "This is my new favorite" comments out of people with another song, then "now this is my new favorite" after listening to the next. lol. Band does not disappoint, all the songs are masterpieces IMO.

Funny you said Nightwish reminded you of Iron Maiden. Steve Harris has called Tuomas Holopainen, the Nightwish keyboardist songwriter a genius. Steve Harris especially likes the Nightwish albums "Imaginaerum" and "Dark Passion Play".
For me one of the best things about Nightwish is that they have many different kinds of songs, (check Gabriel's list, at least in the past he used to give a short description of the style of each song he recommends), even though one guy writes almost all of their songs, both music and lyrics.
One song does not tell much about Nightwish. Not even Ghost Love Score, that you just saw and heard. It is usually the song and performance suggested to reactors first. It is a fan favorite, and Floor's favorite as well. It has to be on the setlist, always. Even when Floor has not been in perfect health.
Not everyone like GLS. Then fans suggest a heavier song instead, and usually it gets a better reception.
I am an old school Iron Maiden fan and Steve Harris has always been the man. Thanks for the comment.

Hey Hoodeez. I think you might be struggling to put a label on Nightwish. OK, I guess they're the masters of the sub genre of 'symphonic metal' if you have to, but in actual fact they're far more than that. Every song (genuinely every song) is a beautifully crafted work of art. Every track is a journey, a discovery, that'll conjure emotions you didn't realize you had in you. I'm a crustly ole soul, been around the block a bit, but I'm not ashamed to say that NW regularly have me wiping grit out my eyes..enjoy the ride!
Nightwish develops a story as they take you on a journey. Many of their songs are epic. This is one of the very special musical and vocal composition. Floor may be the most versatile vocalist in metal. Nightwish is considered symphonic power metal. They get much heavier and also much softer. Floor can do everything from Donizetti to Disney to Death metal, and she does it all really, really well.
If you want to hear her in a lower register, "Song of Myself" (live at Wacken 2013) is a good one, and a great introduction to what she and NW are capable of.
When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.
At this time Floor was a stand-in singer, even so she had the crowd of 82,000 + in the palm of her hand. Not long after this gig she was asked to join the band as their permanent singer.

Every song is different but always has the Nightwish signature sound .
She can do everything vocally .......growl,belt ,classical, pop , metal, rock , Disney, yodel , rap , spoken word , country , reggae , blues , skat , barbershop, do wop , etc, well maybe not all of that but most of it . 😅
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with an range of more than three octaves from C3 to F6. Her singing style varies from opera and clean singing to screaming and grunting. She usually sings in English, but she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish

Every song from Nightwish is a musical adventure, every song is totally different, all their musicians are great, and Floor can sing everything, for me Floor is the best metal singer this era. And together with Marco, are 2 old souls singing to each other.

NW fan from Wisconsin. This song is the common entry for many into the world of Symphonic metal.
This is also one of their lighter, slower songs. But NW plays many different styles and each song is different from the next. This is not a AC/DC everything sounds the same band (and I like AC/DC)
Floor is in my opinion is one of the best rock and metal singers in the world, and a tremendous stage presence.
The boys behind her are just as equally talented and blessed to perform the music of that is 95% written by Tuomas the keyboardist (we call him Metal Mozart).
This band has had 3 singers; Tarja, Annette and currently Floor. Personally Floor is the best fit and takes the band higher than the other two, but the other ladies were talented, just not much type.

You will quickly discover that every Nightwish song is COMPLETELY different from the last, but you always know your listening to Nightwish........ I hope that makes sense. They, well, actually Tuomas the keyboardist composer is endlessly creative in his compositions and songwriting skills, and you never know where a song is going once it begins, but you'll learn to trust that it will be an awesome journey every time! I do not believe there is a better song writer alive today, at least not in this genre. He is so far above most others its not even a comparison. His use of classical devices including multiple key changes, complex time signatures, and motifs, really set the music to a different level, but it NEVER sounds like a music theory exercise, or like I can do this, and this, and this....... The songs are so well crafted and the way he sews such completely different things together in one piece is mind boggling. Oh and then there is Floor, our Valkyrie Goddess........ very likely the best female vocalist on the planet considering her seemingly limitless versatility, while not giving up a single thing in any particular genre.

Hey Drake, so you reacted to another of my top 3 bands: Nightwish, Epica and The Warning. All 3 bands have a great lyrics, fantastic music, amazing scene presence. I love Dany/Pau voices, but Floor has been at it for years and is probably the most versatile female vocalist at the moment - she can sing anything in any genre (incl. growls) just as long as she feels the lyrics and composition. Like I welcomed you and Bones to The Warning Army, I can now welcome you the Nightwish Army.

@15:29 For a moment I thought you were going to say Evanescence, but I think they would appreciate being compared to Iron Maiden. Often the band say they are very influenced by Metallica and Pink Floyd. But of course they are influenced by all sorts of music. The writer (Tuomas, on keys) however states that for many years now, he hardly listens to music, because it sticks in his brain and gets in the way of his own creativity.

"Floor" means "Flower" in Dutch. The band is from Finland, but Floor Jansen is from the Netherlands.
Nightwish don't HAVE a "typical sound". Every song is different. And they're all epic.
Floor can do any style of vocal from metal screams and growls to Grand Opera (I've heard her singing a Puccini aria).
I don't blame you for not paying to get rid of the ads - I refuse to do so as well, though extremely irritating (and occasionally immoral) as they are.

If Iron Maiden refers to the Seventh Son album then it is true. But what they have in common is limited to the high proportion of classical music that is typical for European bands.

This is not representative of their “sound,” because they are so versatile…no two songs really sound alike. They go from way softer than this to way heavier than this, and everything in between. Floor can sing anything, so they don’t have too many limits…there’s even a video on UA-cam of her singing a page from the phone book and it sounds amazing. Gabriel’s list is a good guide to follow…I don’t think it has to be followed in order or anything, but he will give you the links to the best quality videos of their best songs, so it’s helpful…he won’t steer you wrong.

I was born in 1971, i'm a Metalhead and a MaidenManiac since 1985. In a time without Internet, Wikipedia etc. Therefor UA-cam, with all those videos is still a fascinating thing for me. And if i have to watch an add every now and then, i'm the last one to complain bout it. I like to look arround in UA-camr's room, if they recording their videos there like you do. First thing i noticed was of course 'Godzilla'. I love Godzilla, and King Kong, but don't like to watch the movies. Cause mostly they get killed by fakkn humans. I'm like Ace Ventura, you know. And after few minutes into your video i saw something moving behind you. That was when i notice your lovely cat. Last year i had to let my little dog Sammy cross the Rainbowbridge. After 17 wonderful years, damn. Whatever, something else i noticed...your Coffee cup on the shelf...it's merchandise from "The Crow", right. (...the original with Brandon only. I saw bit's of the Sequels/Remake and i hate them) Awe, i'm a huge Bruce & Brandon Lee fan since 1978. Sad lifetime story. Well, i've subcribed and hope you do some more of Nightwish. And maybe some videos of my personal guitar hero, the underatet Gary Moore, wich i was lucky to saw him once live on stage here in Germany in 1989. @@DrakeSpidey and those high notes that floor hits if you haven’t already heard, we have affectionally dubbed floorgasms. They leave you all flushed tingly and euphoric and yes, she does everything from pop opera the deep gutter growl, and the bass player who is no longer with the band has tremendous vocals as well. He won Finland masked singer name is Marco Hietala . There is not one bad apple in the bunch. They are all super talented but without any major showboating they do what’s necessary for the song don’t try to really shred. The keyboard is the leader of the band that’s Thomas decomposes 90% of their music and the background the backing track you hear is the London Philharmonic, they frequently record with them
