  • On 8 August, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War hosted an official side meeting to the tenth Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference; "N-5 Doctors Speak with One Voice".
    As all nuclear armed states modernize and expand their nuclear arsenals, health professionals from the N-5 nations, which were conditionally and temporarily given permission to possess nuclear weapons under the 1970 Treaty, speak with one voice about the existential threat that nuclear weapons pose to human and planetary health and the need to prevent nuclear war.
    The N-5 nations were allowed to have nuclear weapons under the NPT, but are under the obligation in Article 6 of the 1970 treaty to “pursue negotiations in good faith” to end the nuclear arms race “at an early date and to nuclear disarmament , and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control."
    It is a medical imperative that the five NPT nuclear possessing states, honor their joint statement of January 3, 2022 that “nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” and make progress in fulfilling their nuclear disarmament responsibilities according to Article 6 of the NPT.
    Speakers include;
    - Dr. Ella Faiz, IPPNW France, Immediate Past IPPNW Europe Student Representative
    - Dr. Olga Mironova, IPPNW Russia, Regional Vice President IPPNW
    - Dr. Lesley Morrison, Medact (IPPNW UK)
    - Dr. Joe Hodgkin, Physicians for Social Responsibility-USA
    - Véronique Christory, Senior Arms Control Adviser to the International Committee for the Red Cross
