I just bought this knife like an hour ago. Accidentally cut my thumb a little. It’s a sharp little bastard. I love this thing already. 20 bucks. Can’t beat it.
In short, it's a knife for E.D.C self-defense and not a day-to-day multitasking knife, it was designed solely for personal protection and very stealthy.
I've been wearing this 24/7 as a neck knife for a year straight and I absolutely love it. It's super pointy and has the belt clip added .it's absolutely amazing for self-defense it goes into meat like a lightsaber. Definitely Happy with it.
I bought one for a little more than $20 after tax and I couldn’t be happier. I screwed the sheath onto the side of the console on my boat and bought a second one with the clever blade for almost $25. Really great value.
Should have added this to my minimalist collection when it was 20 bucks for the last few months. is 45 dollars off amazon now... Like how I should have bought their m16 for 20 as I saw it within Dicks Sporting Goods (probably won’t have any blades soon, they ceased selling all firearms in blue states plus added air guns/bows to the list. 45 bucks as well Only place in a 50 mile radius where I can find blades...
Just to stress the 5cr point, I have been seeing this knife for 17.99 on Amazon lately. Brand new of course. Still couldn't get myself to buy it, and I love the design. Love everything about it, save the steel....but I know that it will sit in a drawer and never get carried, because I know that if I really need it to do some work, I know that the edge isnt up to it. Strictly defense...sure its gonna be fine for that, but I need my EDC to be capable of doing both.
Wharnecliffe style blades are incredibly easy to sharpen and maintain. to some people bad edge retention may be a deal-breaker. To others it isn't. It all comes down to personal preference. Regardless of what knife you buy there is SOMETHING about it that will be less than stellar, wether you recognize it as an actual negative aspect or not is once again relative. I carry this particular knife around with me at work because it's a self-defense knife in a utility knife's clothing.
Just picked one up at wal-mart $19.87!! Few blades from wal mart cheaper then on line. Crkt fossil $39.87, crkt obake (black handle)$29.68, crkt m16-01S $20.48. Cheapest I found was a SOG instinct mini $13.00!!!
@@bradsessler Just got one today to use the cord for a Minimalist I needed a replacement for. It's gonna get a clip and be the first knife I've ever carried in my left front pocket, and I'm left handed!
@bradsessler155 depends on where you live, some areas don't allow minors to carry a knife, but you are 14 now. My age. But where I live, minors can't have a knife over 3 inches, now I have broken that law but I don't carry it even thought I'm not even legally supposed to. But if anybody decides to search me, I know after researching laws that they need a warrant even for a minor.
You know Jeff, if you are looking into testing your knives, but don't use them enough during EDC, try carving. As I don't do reviews, for me it's not testing. But it gives me a chance to use and enjoy my knives while relaxing, experience their quality (or lack thereof), and maybe, at the end of the session, I will have a cool wood carving to display. Just a recommendation, instead of wasting paper or cutting cardboard or whatever.
I'm trying to figure out if I'm gonna get the SOG instinct, CRKT spew, or the Mtech 20-30. The SOG instinct has a wide blade and in my opinion, it looks pretty ugly. Then I went to my Walmart and they let me take a look at the CRKT spew, and it feels really good in hand but, the blade shape is honestly ugly too me. And then there is the Mtech 20-30, I love the look of the handle and the blade shape, and it's cheap! But, so I've heard, the blade will dull VERY easily. So I'm honestly caught in a tough decision.
@cutlerylover buck i have used extensively, but case also uses 420hc that is what their trusharp is, and it is a really great steel honestly, very good in its role, easy to sharpen and their heat treat is amazing
Love this little knife g10 handles very impressed nicely done. Leak wharncliffe blade great. Also the sheath Paracord belt set up all for 20 buck awesome!!!!
I saw one in Scheel's today and bought it immediately. I would have bought the wharncliffe minimalist on sight too, it's now the only CRKT Folts knife I don't have.
I have not had the same experience in terms of steel performance herekills me that its so many years later, and this knife is still in production with the same crappy blade steel. 5cr may have been passable on budget blades 10-15 years ago, but there are so many other steels they could use, but for the sake of keeping this thing super cheap at both ends, CRKT does what they do best and thats skimping on materials. What is even maybe more frustrating is that the other Folts neckers (even the much newer Biwa) have had distributor exclusive versions with better steels and different colored handles. Why are we still waiting for a SPEW in sandvik or D2 steel or even just 8cr? Sometimes it seems like sellers are scared of money. Sorry rant over
I wish you had done a bit of direct comparison between the SPEW and Minimalist. Do you think the longer blade is worth the less retentive handle style and more brittle tip? Do you think one or the other is more suited to light EDC or defensive use?
Your right about tips i has the obake blade and it snapped the top when I did something with wood. I just got this as my new edc. Self defence only this time no more wood games 😺
I used to have a gilts minimalist (the straight blade version) Loved that little knife, had it for 4 years. Lost it last summer v-v Thinking about getting the spew to replace it
@rainpaw4 thats a very broad spectrum lol, you could check out some of the bug line from spyderco if you want really small, or you could check out the ladybug or dragonfly
heeey ... can you help me ... i was watching the video and you were talking about soft steel, and ... i was thinking about getting a Spyderco mule ... but it will be my first doit-yourself knife, so i dont want to spend tons of money ... and i was thinking about the mule team 12 ... but i have no idea about the CRUWEAR steel ... cuz the knife is like $60 so i dont know what to spect form the steel ... thank you
I have the Mini-Bowie & like it a lot, but the little cheap lanyard cord had to go and I had to make my own with better cord. This knife looks nice and I agree about people using blades wrongly and blaming the knife (Sheep-Dips). I have never had an issue with my Leek either.
5cr15mov is not a good steel, and that is coming from a guy who's favorite edc steel is 8cr13mov and 420hc(on such knives as buck and case, because of proper heat treat), I am very much like you with stropping my knives when i empty my pockets, but 5cr15mov in my experience really just does not hold an edge nearly as long as 8cr or 420hc, i cut sometimes a lot of boxes up during the day at my job and in my experience after breaking down a couple boxes this steel really has a pretty poor edge
just a tid bit but steel from the US has natural minerals that make it stronger. For heavy lifting with cranes all the clevises and steel parts must be made from drop forged US steel. Expect chinese made knives to be more brittle. also watch for american made companies who buy there steel overseas and make it here. Just sayin.
I am absolutely gaga (did I just say gaga? Since when do I talk like that?) over my crkt minimalist tanto, I can't believe how nice of a knife I got for $20. I'm thinking about getting the other two and I definitely need to get the spew. Alan Folts must be some sort of super knife genius.
the spine is sharp for farel rod also my knife 🔪 sharpen it better it will cut and skin game it will splite wood for fire wood little pieces and feathering as well
Jeff, either you've had really bad heat treats on your 8Cr or you've had the best damn AUS-6 ever. I can easily sharpen the Cr family and AUS-8(A), but the same knife I've had 3 of (Returned it twice for a new one at my local store) in AUS-6 will not take an edge at all comparable to those terrible Humvee double fixed bowies you see at sporting goods stores.
I just swapped from the minimalist to this knife. Deeper wounds if needed. And man this thing is shard as fuck. I almost took my kidney out last night practicing my draw and sheathing 🤦♂️
Hey Jeff, thanks for the great review man. I liked this one too however I did find the 5Cr difficult to apply a razor edge to, surprising considering how soft the steel it is - my guess is it doesn't have enough carbon to really take a fine edge. Great knife overall however.
re broken tips- my dad always said "your pocket knife is the most expensive and least effective prybar or screwdriver you will ever own!"
Least???
Thats why I got myself an Adventurecraft from Jacob Peterso. Itś basically a sharp nail.
Thats cause a knife isn't a prybar or screwdriver stupid and ur dad's also stupid

Extremely stealthy, you can hide it in your arm pit with your arms crossed just be careful. Ha
Just got mine at Walmart for $22. Neet little knife for what it is made for.
I carry this knife horizontal on my belt in front. Really never use it, hope i never have to use it for what i bought it for.

Yes it does. 😂 Stabbed the living shit out of my hand. Full thrust, almost went through my hand, had to go get a tetanus shot. No stitches tho.
I literally didn't even feel it.
Very old knife and video but these are on sale on Amazon for 20$
I love mine

Can you scout carry it?
@@bryceborders2967you can carry it however the holes match up buddy. I carry mine horizontal.
I use this as my every day work knife. It works as a utility knife really well.
Why didn't they make it with the minimalist finger groove grips??😢

I don't think it's been 10 years bro since that knife's been out

Normally i don't like Wharncliffe style blades, but. I like how this one still has that fine point. Thanks great review.
Just got mine at Walmart for 21$ earlier today
@TheKnifeman14 their staple 7" fighter is a great fixed blade, their folders tend to be more expensive compared to other similar knives

I just bought one from Walmart
In 2021 at Walmart its $18.00
@bobmellon and I assume your expereince with 420HC is through Buck?
The knot you used to attach it to your belt loop is called a girth hitch.
I hope you are the type of person that gets back to people
Very very easily concealed, even in your hand with your arms crossed.
@TheKnifeman14 I like replicas...As for like regular designs the antique models
