Back in the day we had few choices for tools. Mainly Craftsman n Snap-on. Now there are so many other choices in tools. It's hard to justify the cost of Snap-on today.
@LouisCapps-p3z i think ive heard people say this before on other videos. I've heard there just wasn't many options other than what you mentioned or they had to make do with very poorly made foreign tools. Thanks for watching and commenting I hope you enjoyed the video.
I did pick up some Japanese sockets as well back then. No idea where I got them. They came in a metal tray box. To this day I still have them. Great video. Keep them coming. You will be hitting a thousand sub in no time. Cool car behind you.
I'm a near 30 yr veteran macanic have a ton of snap on and have been buying another set of tools . I love my Icon tools ! Treat them right and you won't be disappointed!!
I agree that Harbor Freight has stepped right into the gap that Sears left behind, and their tool line has improved greatly over the years. I have many Icon tools and have zero complaints.
@Double7-DIY-Garage yea I find myself getting more and more stuff from there these days. Thanks for watching and commenting, I'll be sure to check your channel out too
@hoobsgarage 20 years ago, I was buying most of my professional use tools from Craftsman. If I had to do it today, it would be hard to pass up Icon and Tekton to fill that need.
ICON wrenches are surprisingly good. My Grandfather once gave me a piece of advice. If you need a tool that you don't own, borrow it if you can. Always return it in better shape than you got it. If you end up borrowing it more than twice, buy that tool, but get the least expensive one available. If you break that tool, get a better quality one. I have a rather eclectic mix of tools from a wide range of manufacturers. But when I see that a set of Snap-On wrenches is nearly $3000... well, I think my grandfather was probably right.
@_WyreTheWolf I'm the same way. I like a whole mix of random tools, and it adds some different colors to the toolbox, too, lol. Thanks for watching and commenting, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I’ve been transitioning my cheap tools to Icon, Tekton, and Capri. I really like the Icon and Tekton ratchets. The Capri and Icon wrenches are pretty good as well. I lean towards Icon because it’s fairly good budget quality, plus 5% cash back from the Harbor Freight card
I love Icon and Tekton tools. The prices, warranty and quality are great. Plus I don’t have a snap on truck pulling up to my house. So I couldn’t give a crap about snap on.
It would be nice it they sold the ratchets in sets. I'm thanking of getting the gearwrench 90 tooth ratchets for 134 you get 4. Icon set sold separately costs more.
@@robhudson5498 I agree some sort of a set would be nice instead of it all being individual. Thanks for watching and commenting I'm glad you enjoyed the video
I've got a lot of Icon, wrenches and all. I really like their socket stuff. I've had lots of Gearwrench, and imo, Icon is better. They use chrome-moly steel for all their socket stuff instead of chrome vanadium, and that makes them much stronger while still being thinner walled. But lately, I've been buying more Japanese made tools, like Koken, Tone, Engineer, Vessel, IPS, and Tsunoda. All for around the same price, maybe just a little more than Icon, but the quality is absolutely phenominal. If you ever want to treat yourself on Amazon, get some Koken Z-series ratchets and sockets. It's a little more expensive than Icon, but the quality is amazing, and it's still 1/2 or less than the price of Snap-on.
@shadow7796 ill have to check it out. I've heard good things about a couple of those brands you just mentioned. Thanks for watching and commenting I hope you enjoyed the video.
1st. time viewer..will be watching more! Can't speak for others, but what turns me off of Icon is that when you see them actually tested, they usually average about the same results as modern(Chineesium) Craftsman & Kobalt stuff. i.e. homeowner/pro-sumer grade...NOT professional quality- so for Horrid Freight to compare them to Snap-Off is...a joke (I do not own or use Snap-On, as they are way over-priced and I don't do debt). HF makes that comparison simply as a marketing ploy, figuring if they compare them to Snap-On, people will THINK they are of Snap-On quality but at a fraction of the price, when the reality is they are of Craftsman quality...so maybe a fair value..but not some great deal. I feel that HF is trying to fool me by making such an absurd comparison, and therefor I steer clear. If they were simply honest, I might actually be tempted to buy some Icon when I don't need top quality. They are embarrassing themselves by comparing Icon to Snap-On, and that embarrassment transfers to whomever buys the tools, much like when Ford had the gall to compare their Granada to the Mercedes (When Mercedes were still world-class quality)...only the clueless would be seen in a Granada, because they were crap, and you didn't want everyone to think that you believed it was "just as good as a Mercedes". I run from such under-handed marketing, same as I run anytime I see someone advertising "free" anything... Oh, and it's not the cost of US wages in most cases that are making US-made stuff too expensive..it's the TAXES (2nd highest corporate income tax in THE WORLD..and ultimately, the consumer pays that tax)...and the absurd over-regulation. Own a big business and you have to deal with TWENTY-NINE different federal agencies; not to mention state and local....plus the cost of all the mandatory benefits...plus the high cost of real-estate, p;roperty taxes, insurance..and you have to suffer fools/alcoholics/the unconscientious/etc....and it's hard to get decent help no matter what you pay. The US and Europe have killed their own manufacturing base ON PURPOSE in the name of globalization, and it doesn't matter who one votes for, as they are all smoking the circumcized schlong.
@bobbylibertini welcome my friend and you make excellent points. I agree with you on so many levels. The Harbor Freight marketing is very off-putting. I hate when I look at a wrench and it says compare to snap on craftsman whatever it says. I instantly quit thinking "hey this looks nice" and immediately think "seriously". In my video that's kinda what I meant when I said "maybe it's because they try to copy snap on". I guess I knew what I wanted to say but didn't know how to put it into words lol. I don't rehearse these videos I get in a mood and sit down, hit record and wing it lol. I also completely agree with you about the additional cost of manufacturing things in the USA. I almost mentioned that but figured I gone down enough of a rabbit hole and didn't wanna run off viewers who came to see tools and only these tools. I really appreciate all your input and stayed tuned for a follow up videos I had planned.
