I have been shooting for over 20+ years, military and competitive, and I am left-eye dominant but right handed, and I never even heard about turning my head like that to compensate. My next range trip I will be trying this, but just doing presentations, it is already making a difference!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Crazy that you've been able to shoot well (assuming a good shot considering your exp )When you haven't tried the head turn. I was never taught the head turn but when I saw that I was struggling to find the sights so badly it just came instinctively as I tied to compensate for being right handed/left eyed. Kudos for making life work for you in spite of that.
I am right handed and didn't know I was left eye dominant for some time. I read an article on how to determine eye dominance and watched some videos years ago. I read articles with people advocating forcing eyes to switch dominance with different methods. Further research I found this to be a poor solution and at best temporary, since the eyes would naturally change back to the previous dominance. Now using my left eye with that slight head position adjustment with both eyes open( always kept both eyes open) my poi has improved. It took some time before the new head position became automatic and natural without thinking about it, but now it's what is comfortable for me.
20+ years of bad advice fixed in about 6 seconds! I'm also right handed and left eye dominant, but i've always shot well enough (retired law enforcement) to push through. Turning my head far enough to take my right eye out of the picture worked wonders. Wish I had someone who "trained smart" years ago. Thank you John!
I think I am a pretty good shooter. I have always closed my left eye, and then later learned to squint my left eye so that I keep some vision in it, which has worked ok, but I think this will be a lot better.
What if I have an eye patch on my left eye and I have a parrot on my left shoulder to scan for threats, but the parrot is right eye dominant? This is all so confusing.
Lawren Downing You will end up with back problems. An average parrot weighs 45 lbs... everyone knows that. If the parrot is scanning for threats, I assume he’ll have a decent spotting scope which will add a couple lbs. all said and done, you will have 47lbs on one shoulder for 12-14 hours a day. Best practice is to ditch the parrot and just take the eye patch off. Use both eyes unless you squirt lime in one while making a margarita, then you’ll just have to endure 47 lbs of parrot and optics while you patch up and recover from OC (orbital citrus). Hope this helps.
This was really funny, I don't have a parrot or a patch on my left eye. However I do have a patch on my right eye and I was laughing at this whole video because there's no doubt I'm left eye dominant. I shoot pistols right handed, but long guns and bows left handed. My kids would love it if I did get a parrot, but I get enough comments and double takes with just the eye patch.
I’ve been shooting and training all my life, including 10 years in law enforcement. This is the first time that an instructor has pointed out that eye dominance can change with distance. I just learned that I am right eye dominant at distance, but left eye dominant close up. As a right handed shooter, I’ve been struggling with this for years. Thank you!
I love watching John instruct. I'm a newer instructor, and I find it very difficult not to jump in and correct everything all at once. Even seeing her elbows down I wanted to ask why he didn't adjust that, but then realized that it's because it isn't important for her yet. Watching a master instructor ply his craft is always so fascinating. I learn so much not just about shooting, or tactics, but the art of instruction. Thank you very much sir!
My bro has the same problem when teaching his gf, he wanted to adjust everything at once and have her be perfect from the start but all it does is overwhelm the shooter and doesnt help anything.
It’s really hard not to want to shove all of your knowledge and experience on someone, especially when you know you only have them for a limited amount of time. But I’ve found the more I throw at someone, the less they absorb.
G'day, I've often had friends come out to the farm and go shooting (rifle). Some will bring young/inexperienced children (& adults) that want to "have a go". I'll often tell parents (& myself) not to worry about proper technique etc and just let them have a go. Yes, I watch them to make sure nobody gets hurt. It's hard not to watch the target when that is all you have done for your whole life.
Me too. Im a new shooter and all the instructors/men tell me to do all the things he just called "bad advice". Smh...being a female in the mens world sucks...being sort of cute just makes its that much worse. Everyone has stupid advice just to talk to you. Ugh...my life. Still smh...🤦♀️just saying.
@@zenlenzmedia generalized thought here but definitely try to get as much advice from video as possible before doing live training. She equips herself, active self protection and smith & wesson's gunsmart series are really good resources for you to compare with any live training you receive thereafter for confirming your habits and addressing any corrections needed. Keep committing to your training and wish you well.
@@762x69 Thank you so much, I actually found a retired police officer to train myself and my daughters. Im much more confident with my shooting skills and will continue to train amd practice my skills.
I shoot rifles and pistols cross eye dominant. I tilt the rifle to the left a bit and turn my head to the right more than normal. I shoot shotguns left handed though.
Holy crap John is really good at defusing tension. A lot of new shooters are terrified of doing something wrong and having someone who's willing to joke around a bit to make sure everyone is relaxed is great.
Great advice and much needed for many shooters. I'm right handed but left eye Dominant. Drill Sergeant Authier in Basic Training at E Co. 1-50th INF Ft Benning GA diagnosed it back in 2001. Best Drill Sergeant to ever wear the brown round! Seriously, we loved DS Authier and would have died trying to live up to his expectations. A true leader inspires that kind kind of loyalty and respect. I do just about anything to buy that man a beer. I fire right handed. No issues with a rifle, with a pistol I have to turn my head to the right. After nearly 20 years shooting this way it's 2nd nature.
You had a great DS because none of mine did the eye dominance test. And because of that I barely qualified as Marksman in Basic. It was only later after qualifying at my unit that I found out that I was cross dominant. Luckily, I can shoot a rifle fine lefthanded and I qualified Expert for the rest of my time in the Army. Hooah!!!
Serious question: do you really not have issues with rifles? I cannot seem to find a comfortable angle to shoot long arms with right handed left eye dominance.
I am sure others know these techniques and are good trainers, But John has the something that raises him way above most. His ability to put people at ease and explain techniques in simple terms is top notch! I would gladly pay for his training, his.
OH.MY.GOD!!! I've struggled with this for YEARS and just tried it out. Makes complete sense and it worked for me! I'm cross-eyed dominant and have struggled to shoot accurately. Adding this to my dry fire drills now. Thanks a TON!!!!
For decades the olympics have simply had their athletes wear and eye patch over the eye they want to make the submissive eye. After a few weeks the eyes will adjust the dominance. Very simple and the olympic program has the technique perfected
Makes sense. It’s what doctors do with lazy eye, we’ll actually the opposite. Patch goes over the strong eye to increase the strength of the weak eye to bring them the same level.
I love that he gives positive feedback through the entire process. You’re seeing through the sights. Good. You placed the gun down safely. Good. All that leads to a positive experience and makes people more comfortable.
ShredderSensei: I have cross eye dominance (left eye & right handed shooter.) This is the best video I've seen on the subject. Lucas turns his head just as John suggests here. It's something that I just did instinctively when I began to shoot decades ago. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/DV_WTsF_7kM/v-deo.html He goes into shooting rifle as well; very helpful I think. Edit...After I posted, I saw that I was signed in under my son's login and name, Trevor. This is Greg: gb93669@yahoo.com
Incredible how this tip helped me focus a lot better with both eyes open. Thanks for the great content as always. I literally stopped what I was doing and started practicing.
So, I NEVER comment, but you just taught me something that has been eluding me forever. Turning my chin towards my shoulder INSTANTLY brought my dominant eye into action while still allowing me to keep my other eye open. Magic! Thank you.
You are a damned good trainer. I'm right handed and left eyed. Basic training marksmanship was NO FUN until they sent in a second DI who figured out the problem. Shot marksman after shooting left handed. Course I had to have a towel over my neck to prevent brass burns...that bump behind the bolt had not been invented in the USAF in 1968! Now I shoot all handguns with either hand, and with both eyes open...but it was a longer training trip than your young lady had to endure! Well done! Keep up the good work bringing in new shooters; especially the ladies. They bolster our ranks more than many can understand.
Heavens why did it take so many years for me to hear this; I found out a couple years ago that I have this very problem. I appreciate the video, brother!
I go to that governors gun club all the time and you have no idea how much I hope every time I walk in the doors to see John. It would be a total fanboy moment, probably some tears involved from John for meeting me ya know
Love it a bartender at a Gun Club. Love the video I'm right handed but left eye dominant, I'll try your techniques at home during my dry fire practice to train my eye right.
Anytime I watch John with a new shooter and they are smiling.....I notice that I'm smiling with them the entire time. THAT is what it's about! Educate, raise awareness/confidence level, take away that fear of the unknown about firearms, and make sure they have FUN while they are learning to shoot!!! Keep up the great work brother!
I am left eye / right hand, and so is my youngest son. It can be tough to overcome and it's good to see a realistic, practical explanation and fix explained for people that dont understand what this even is. My youngest qualified Expert last summer in basic in the Navy, so I guess I did a good job, teaching him the proper way. I love your videos. Keep up the good work.
This is absolute gold for me. I have been shooting with with my dad from the time I was eight. 40 years later and my dad gone, I still struggle with my handgun mastery. Being right handed, it’s natural for me to carry and shoot right handed also. So, when it comes to rifles, I am excellent and shoot left handed / eye. Reason being is that I was born with a “lazy eye” on the right side that has extremely limited vision. Your recommendation is spot on. I am nailing 4” steel gongs no problem. Thank you and keep on sharing such great info!
THANK YOU! In less than 10 minutes I have learned to keep both eyes open comfortably, position my head to compensate for my left eye dominance, AND feel confident in doing whatever I need to do so I can see the front sight clearly - no matter what criticism and/or "correction" I get from others.
I haven't been back to the range in years since "discovering" I was cross-dominant. I took my brand new *Highpoint C9 (don't judge me; I'm poor) to the range with my CC certified friend. Even though in the distant past I shot fairly accurately with a rifle and even pistols, I was now consistently shooting to the left. Closed my left eye, and started hitting the target again. I do wear glasses, and my prescription for each eye is different. I was so depressed over having to close my eye to shoot, that every time I considered going to the range, I felt discouraged, and found an excuse not to go. Your solution, which seems just common-sense, but is coming from someone with your experience, gives me enough confidence that I want to revisit the range and see if it works for me. Turning my head would be so preferable to closing my eye for the reasons you gave. It _did_ occur to me to just turn my head, but I thought it was bad form. Thanks so much for making this video. *I don't like double-stack double-action semi-autos because I have small hands; for some strange reason I found the C9 _very_ comfortable to hold and shoot, unlike some other semi-autos. It feels balanced, somehow. I'm one of those few who actually don't like (stock) Glocks, though your Warrior Poet pistol looks sexy as hell...
try holding other brands, even different sizes and styles. any little difference in design could be a big difference in the hand. maybe one day you could even have something other than a hipoint lol
Run what you brung. I don't have a highpoint (considering a carbine), but I have shot several. Never had a problem. They go bang, and seem to be very reliable. I did shoot one that was in .45, and something was up with the barrel. It wasn't very accurate, and the bullets keyholed past 20 yrds. At least highpoint will fix anything. I have had issues with big brands as well.
Just got my first handgun a few days ago. Had been training for a couple of months to determine what's the best gun for me. My main problem was I can't wink / close my weaker eye, so had to close my dominant eye. This video is going to be a game-changer! Thanks!
These are great, John is an incredible teacher, I bet many more people would be much more comfortable with firearms, if they had John as an instructor.
I have struggled with eye dominance my entire life and never heard of turning my head...... I will be trying this with dry fire training immediately Thanks for all you do!!
One of these days I'm going to have to take some classes from this guy. You are a great teacher, John. You're spirit and personality just shine through. Great video.
Been shooting for over 30 years, always closed the left eye, learned something new. I’ll try this technique next range day. Enjoyed it, not because of the beautiful lady but this technique. Thanks.
I was very lucky to have a science teacher early on (the first class in grade 7 when you get those loaner microscopes) who insisted that we keep both eyes open: one eye for the slides, one eye for the scope, and practice making your brain switch back and forth. I feel like it's one of those things that's easier the earlier you learn to do it.
I am a new shooter and after watching this I have taken a few min. to use my laser practice equipment, and with the info found here I have already improved my accuracy. Thanks
I just wanted to say ty. I have been dealing with that problem for ever. Just by watching and practicing u have made me more confident of a shooter. Im going to pass this off to as many as i can help.
This is a very well done training. 40 so-odd years ago I used this tip to help a friend of mine out with his eye and correct grip and stance. He has passed me, as far as being a better shot, he's been whacking and stacking game for years now. He has never forgot me and the time I spent with him and his children, sends me fresh game every two or three months. I love him and his family, but I feel like I got the better end of that little deal. :) Thanks for all you do, and God bless.
Omg I'm so glad that you had made this video cause I have the same issue and you have answered all my questions. P.s while watching this i was dry fire practicing
I am a right handed, left eye dominant competition shooter. This looks like great advice. I will be trying this in dry fire and at the range. Thanks John. I've watched many of your videos and picked up several things that I think will help improve my shooting and my situational awareness. I just recently discovered your channel and am greatly enjoying it. Thanks for what you do.
I've literally been training to bring my sight to my left eye facing forward in my training. Little awkward at first but it works. I just might do this instead
Thank you, John! My wife is right-handed and left-eye dominant and the folks at the local range immediately went to the, "Hey, shoot left-handed" solution. Your solution seems a lot better and, as Kathryn illustrated (probably out of habit), once you are in the habit of closing an eye, it is REALLY hard to stop. These instructional videos are the best!
We watched Lethal Weapon the other night and I pointed out to my wife how Mel Gibson closed both eyes on every shot and still was able to make a smiley face at 25 yards! ;-)
John thanks for putting out this video. I wish I knew you 30 years ago. I’m a retired LEO first handgun was a revolver. Later into my career they started to train us in point shooting and I had an auto loader at this point and this was first time I tried shooting with both eyes open. I had a problem with it and was seeing 2 guns or double vision like she was. I brought up to the instructors then and several more times over the years and every time nobody knew what I was talking about and of course I was laughed at by my peers. I am kind of odd in that I shoot a rifle left handed and handgun right. I do some things left handed like shoot pool, surf, bow and arrow, power saw and I am right handed when I write, box, hammer a nail, throw a ball. I am left eye dominant also. I believe things I learned on my own as a kid I did them left handed and things I was taught to I wound up right handed. Thanks for this simple tip and putting out great videos.
I have a lazy eye that's been mostly fixed and was never an issue since I was like 6 until I started using handguns. Red dots make it easier but I have constant issues with some sights especially ones on the micros. I can rock my AR and AK with little effort but grouping with any of my handguns with just 3 dots sights (even my 22lr) is just impossible. I think it's presentation problems mostly cause the gun I'm training with to eventually carry is a Glock but I shoot FNs, SIGs, and a bunch of others at around the same amount so it could be that my muscle memory was never fully there for anything cause I keep switching it up so much.
Yea that's the problem with having too many toys. I love by Beretta and shoot the crap out of it...but conceal carry my Glock. Gotta just buckle down and put in the time, and maintain a healthy balance at the range, keeping focus more on your chosen firearm than all the fun stuff.
Right-handed/left-eye dominant here and I found the head-tilt technique through trial and error. This is, by far, the best technique for eye dominance issues! It made me an expert shooter in the Marine Corps and plenty of practice has made it my natural position to shoot. Great advice on this channel! 👍
John, this has literally been “eye-opening”...I’ve been right eye dominant all my life, shoot well...but only with left eye closed...I’ve tried to train with both eyes open and my eyes would fight just like you described...UNTIL I saw this video and tried the head twist...guess what, like you mentioned, I’m right eye dominant at a distance but in near field of view, I’m apparently left eye dominant...I’m completely floored, what a revelation. Haven’t been to the range to test this out yet, but in dry fire practice, it was obvious and easy...I’m officially a right-handed, near field of view left-eye dominant shooter...any suggestions on how to adjust that same concept to firing rifles? Many thanks again!
I have an asigmatism and shoot with glasses and have the exact same problem. I wonder if the two are related. I have tried over and over to keep both eyes open and it never worked and I always fell back to shooting with my left eye closed and always feel guilty. I tried what John mentioned and it worked perfectly! It keeps your left eye from seeing the pistol sights while still seeing the target and surroundings. That allows the right eye to get a clear sight picture while still seeing the target clearly. Brillant! Thanks a million John! Train SMART!
New shooter here. Thank you so much for all of your training videos. Due to the lockdown I cannot get lessons or any range time. My son in law is a Deputy Sherriff and has taken me to a farm to at least get some practice shooting the gun and given me many pointers along the way. I have a M&P9 Shield 2.0 and your instructional videos that I have learned and then applied when shooting have improved my ability and confidence greatly, plus all the respect for safety. Thank you so much John, you are a great, positive influence for all of us new gun owners out there. Lessons and CCL for me as soon as the Pandemic is over. Keep up the social distancing for now please. I work in an ICU and we are starting to get overwhelmed. Each time I go to work there is a tremendous amount of anxiety now inside me that wasn't there before. Lets all of us "good" people watch out for each other.
Same here. I usually squint just a little to bring into focus. Funny enough I can shoot a rifle left handed, but this presents issues with a right hand gun belt setup.
Thank you John! I suspected I was left-eye dominant (I write left-handed, shoot a rifle left but eat, throw, kick, & shoot a HANDgun RIGHT handed). They called it "crossed-dominance". I've been shutting my left eye out of desperation to pass the FBI qualification and now I have the correct solution (turn chin toward the shoulder). THANK YOU!!
Like how relaxed you made her and already she was self correcting the eye issue. Great video keep them coming. John would ever do a video with Mat from DemoRanch?
Since getting my pistol permit last month, this is the best video I've watched to help me with my sights great job i really appreciate the work WPS does.
Yes, Thanks John! Got any upcoming tips for Astigmatism/aging eyes? Mine have never been 20/20 and after 36 years wearing corrective lenses they ain't getting any better. 🤓
Thanks for the replies, I had an IEP in school since 1st grade in P.E. for eye-hand coordination, depth-perception, and fine motor skills, on top of progressively near sighted w/Astigmatism and color-blindness ... ya know cause putting a 1/4" projectile somewhere Tens-Hundreds of yards away is too easy without that challenge. Lol 🙂👍
Thank you for this video. I was taught to close one eye to aim. I heard from a few sources I should keep both eyes open, so I watched this video. Today I tried your tips, and the range employee came up to me and said, "By far the best shooting we've seen this morning." Yeah, your advice really works!
Thank you! I've had a few training classes and unfortunately have heard the "Oh, you're left eye dominant, do you want to try shooting left handed?" Answered no each time and did the left eye shut thing, though it still wanted to take over. Now you've opened both eyes for me! Thank you for that!
I've been looking for a solution for being left-eye dominant yet right-handed. My tactical combat trainer (ex-Army, ex-SWAT and detective) said the same things you just explained. I went to a range for my CCL certifying lesson and the instructor told me to turn my wrist but it felt weird compared to the way tactical trainer taught me. I'm glad there's another tactical guy out there saying the same thing so I'm convinced this is how I need to continue training. Thank you for all of your videos, been a subscriber for a long time :) God bless you.
Brother John!!!! You fixed me!!! I've been working this issue for the last couple of years and would either cheat by taking a quick blink of the left eye or to off set where the front sight slightly. Thank you sir!!
omg I was in the infantry, left eye dominant and right handed. Nobody ever told me this. I have hit many targets over the years, all with my left eye closed. Thanks much.
I'm glad I found you. I'm a southpaw with a right dominant eye. I've tried to this into an advantage by learning to use both hands to shoot with. I've a long way to go...
This is actually me too in many ways except that my left eye is never focused correctly from the time I was a kid they've always called it a lazy eye so I've learned to do most things right-handed so when I started shooting I started shooting right-handed and I'm reasonable at it I'm definitely no problems but I found that I can shoot left-handed just as well when I decided to try that
Just started wearing readers, eyes have deteriorated a lot over the last year. I’ve been struggling with the sight picture. Even started squinting my left eye. The turning your head trick is a life saver. Thanks John.
Great video John. I am a right hand shooter but have recently discovered that I am left eye dominate. Once I figured it out things changed dramatically for the better.
I agree. She is in the public eye a lot (pun intended) no doubt, but handles herself well. John is an excellent promoter because he is sincere and operates out of conviction I'm sure. Women who are willing to learn how to shoot have a pioneering spirit. They're not afraid of what their girlfriends think.
@@jeffcooper9363 Completely disagree with your last statement. Women that I know who shoot see TONS of their friends very jealous and want to go shooting with them. The ones who do and stick with it tell their friends and so on. THIS is why you are seeing more women at the range. I'm easily seeing 60/40 and (depending on day, time, etc.) more women than men. It's fantastic!!!
Man, I can't tell you how helpful that was! I've been shooting handguns now for about 5 years, and even though I know it's not ideal, I just haven't been able to get past closing my left eye, like this young lady in the video. I just HAVE to, or the sight picture is all over the place. Can't wait to try this!
I watched this video after 45 years of shooting with my dominate eye closed. After some slow drills and 150 rounds, I finally feel comfortable presenting a pistol with both eyes open. THANK YOU JOHN!
I work at a gun store/range in Florida and watching your videos along with some others have really helped me working there. (Important note: I do NOT work off commission, my first and only job is to make sure customers are happy with what they bought) learning how to shoot better myself and helped me learn how to teach people better. I’m not the most accurate my any stretch of the imagination but I can at least help people build their fundamentals and make sure they have a positive experience, which to me is way better than any high price commissions. 🤙🏻
I JUST found out I’m left eye dom. Being right handed I kind of freaked out. Have to go drive around base in a Hummer with a periscope and panties taped to my eye now.
Thank you so much. I had so much problems identifying my left eye dominance and right handed. I went to my range and was so surprised at my accuracy. The best video on eye dominance by far.
I'm so glad to watch this video! I went shooting last month with a friend outdoors and it was only my second time. First time was about 15 years ago. The targets were very far away. I wear mono vision contacts - right eye close, left eye far and I had to close an eye every shot. Also, it was different for each eye. I'm going to an indoor range tomorrow, I'm going to try this technique. Thanks for the vids with your wife too. I'm a small person and watched the one with the Choo choo technique. This gives me confidence I can learn and become proficient in handling a firearm. God bless and stay safe. ❤🇺🇸
Hi John, !thanks to your video, I diagnosed myself with left eye dominance. During the entire video I was unable to see you at all but I could hear you perfectly.
I'm in the situation of having extremely poor vision due to laser surgeries that were preformed on my eyes so that I could be able to see when I was born three months early. My left eye provides barely any vision to the peripheral while my right is dominant and am extremely nearsighted (left eye corrected with glasses is 20/200, right is between 20/100 and 20/150). I'm planning on getting a handgun for self defense and to get further into the hobby of target shooting, and your advice here is stuff that all makes sense, glad that there are people out there who help us who are visually impaired. Additionally, even if they aren't real firearms, I've found that airsoft can help learn how to aim properly through the sights.
It took some time before the new head position became automatic and natural without thinking about it, but now it's what is comfortable for me.
20+ years of bad advice fixed in about 6 seconds! I'm also right handed and left eye dominant, but i've always shot well enough (retired law enforcement) to push through. I think I am a pretty good shooter. I have always closed my left eye, and then later learned to squint my left eye so that I keep some vision in it, which has worked ok, but I think this will be a lot better.
@@papimaximus95 Wasn't knocking it, I was just saying that it's impressive that he made it work for him. 🤷♂️
What if I have an eye patch on my left eye and I have a parrot on my left shoulder to scan for threats, but the parrot is right eye dominant? This is all so confusing.

Stick with a flintlock pistol then.
🤣😂🤣
This was really funny, I don't have a parrot or a patch on my left eye. However I do have a patch on my right eye and I was laughing at this whole video because there's no doubt I'm left eye dominant. I shoot pistols right handed, but long guns and bows left handed. My kids would love it if I did get a parrot, but I get enough comments and double takes with just the eye patch.
“Closing an eye is not eye-deal”....dad joke game is solid even when he’s not trying
Umm ya ... I heard that the moment he said it ... "dad-ness" confirmed
Soo mad you beat me to that one... Lol

G'day,
I've often had friends come out to the farm and go shooting (rifle).
@Mr Bones bent elbows are ideal, I wasn't questioning the bend in her elbows, but that they are oriented down, instead of up/out.
I’m clearly left eye dominate, could only focus on Catherine, John was a blurry in right eye
No doubt. She was stunning.

John is such a nice polite guy, I wish more trainers were as warm as he is.

30 years I've been shooting in Law enforcement and no one has ever taught me that. Thanks!
Lol about what I'd figure
I shoot rifles and pistols cross eye dominant. I tilt the rifle to the left a bit and turn my head to the right more than normal. I shoot shotguns left handed though.
Really?? I learned that awhile ago only been in law enforcement for 3 years
Do not close one eye because John will stab me in the face. Roger that.
Lol!
John? Where was John? I didn't see him at all in that video! Is he okay?
He will be there (out of peripheral vision) the moment you forget…. To stab you right in the face
Hooah!!!
Ef77 completely agree! I’m curious why he throws that out as an option
Brandon A wait seriously, does that work?
Makes sense. It’s what doctors do with lazy eye, we’ll actually the opposite. Patch goes over the strong eye to increase the strength of the weak eye to bring them the same level.
Sethra Lavode damn thats cool
I love that he gives positive feedback through the entire process.
You’re seeing through the sights. Good.
You placed the gun down safely. Good.
All that leads to a positive experience and makes people more comfortable.
Holy mother, this is literally the best video that is ever been put on UA-cam when it comes to eye dominance. I know because I've watched them all
Same here...and now I can help some of the women folk in my house that seem to struggle with eye dominance even as they outshoot the men. Weird.
ShredderSensei: I have cross eye dominance (left eye & right handed shooter.) This is the best video I've seen on the subject. Lucas turns his head just as John suggests here. It's something that I just did instinctively when I began to shoot decades ago.
Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/DV_WTsF_7kM/v-deo.html
He goes into shooting rifle as well; very helpful I think.
Edit...After I posted, I saw that I was signed in under my son's login and name, Trevor.

My left eye is way better than my right, I’m going to train myself to do this.
This is probably the best training hack I've seen in years. Thanks, John, for your insight, professionalism, and humor!
Magic! Thank you.
Best advice for a cross-eye dominate shooter like me. A simple turn of the head solved years of frustration.
The same for me: wasted 10 years
I go to that governors gun club all the time and you have no idea how much I hope every time I walk in the doors to see John. It would be a total fanboy moment, probably some tears involved from John for meeting me ya know
Smart putting her in your vid, John. She’s so pretty it makes looking at you almost bearable.
Lol
Lefty, right-eye dominant. Found the head turn several years ago, but glad to see it’s a solid technique.
Great video, again, John.
I just wanted to let you know that I subscribed BECAUSE of your dad jokes/humor. Please don’t stop that
I am left eye / right hand, and so is my youngest son.
Thanks!
Been trying to figure this out for days and I’ve scanned his content multiple times to find this and Boom he makes the video!!
been waiting for one from the War Poet too. I think Lucas from Trex Arms has a video about it too
That helped my old eyes more than you could ever know. God bless you John.
These are great, John is an incredible teacher, I bet many more people would be much more comfortable with firearms, if they had John as an instructor.
I have struggled with eye dominance my entire life and never heard of turning my head...... I will be trying this with dry fire training immediately
Thanks for all you do!!
I'm right handed and left eye dominate. Always struggle with not closing my right eye. Can't wait to try this out. Thanks John
thanks for the "tilting head" tip, great advice!
I am a new shooter and after watching this I have taken a few min. to use my laser practice equipment, and with the info found here I have already improved my accuracy. Thanks
John, thanks for the free advice. I’ll need to play with this head turn strategy. I’m currently slightly squinting (not shutting) one eye
I just wanted to say ty. I have been dealing with that problem for ever. Just by watching and practicing u have made me more confident of a shooter. Im going to pass this off to as many as i can help.
Johns wife: no late work nights
*racks slide*
John: yes dear
Six people in the dislikes close both eyes when they shoot
Christian McNally and lean backwards 😆
Maybe they meant to push “like” but they closed their eyes at the last moment?
We watched Lethal Weapon the other night and I pointed out to my wife how Mel Gibson closed both eyes on every shot and still was able to make a smiley face at 25 yards! ;-)
Nah. Some people know he is a zionist puppet.
Are you kin to Rand?
Man! My range needs a “members only lounge” and a bartender like Catherine.
We have a lounge, but no cute bartenders, sadly. :(
The one I go to could use one as well! 😂

By far the best video I’ve ever seen on eye dominance
Thanks!
Trex arms video covers that
Same problem for me... terrible astigmatism
A vid on this topic regarding rifles would be cool
Left eye dom but right handed
Same here. I usually squint just a little to bring into focus. Funny enough I can shoot a rifle left handed, but this presents issues with a right hand gun belt setup.
That would be great!
Trex arms video covers that
Same here
I shoot pistols right handed, but long guns and bows left handed. Unfortunately no real choice since I only have my left eye.
+1
They’re kind of in different lanes. None of demoranch’s vids are instructional, so I doubt they would ever do a collab.
@@zackstetson7243 I know. Yet I am sure that they share their audiences. Thats the only reason I suggested it.

Have you ever noticed how much new shooters Smile? When they are in competent hands of course.
I’ve been struggling with the blurred vision Turing my head has made a world of difference thank you
John has infinite charisma, yet he isnt an egomaniac...thats something to aspire to
I liked the “don’t get cocky, just shoot up” comment. Pretty rare comment from an American ;)
Thank you! I've had a few training classes and unfortunately have heard the "Oh, you're left eye dominant, do you want to try shooting left handed?" Answered no each time and did the left eye shut thing, though it still wanted to take over. Now you've opened both eyes for me! Thank you for that!
Something tells me Mrs Poet might give john the dagger eyes for this one 😬 😂
Phil OConnor lol
Ain't NO way my honey would have done that one! UmmmmUmmmm NADA!!! Just sayin! LOL
No threat to her. Shooter was obviously winking at ME the entire video. I picked up on it early.
Mrs. Poet is not to be messed with. This is known through out this land... :)
She’s probably running a camera
I've been looking for a solution for being left-eye dominant yet right-handed. My tactical combat trainer (ex-Army, ex-SWAT and detective) said the same things you just explained. I went to a range for my CCL certifying lesson and the instructor told me to turn my wrist but it felt weird compared to the way tactical trainer taught me. I'm glad there's another tactical guy out there saying the same thing so I'm convinced this is how I need to continue training. Thank you for all of your videos, been a subscriber for a long time :) God bless you.
“I work upstairs in the members only section...” 😯 “...bartending” 😅 oh ok wasn’t sure what kinda shooting range this was for a minuet
Brother John!!!! You fixed me!!! I've been working this issue for the last couple of years and would either cheat by taking a quick blink of the left eye or to off set where the front sight slightly. Thank you sir!!
Eye dominance: all I know is that her eyes are dominating me....
lol
omg I was in the infantry, left eye dominant and right handed. Nobody ever told me this. I have hit many targets over the years, all with my left eye closed. Thanks much.
John: “I see a threat, it’s a troll.”
Me: “They have a cave troll.”
Great speaker with lots of experience plus a sense of humor--can’t ask for much more. Thanks for helping me become a better shooter.
this video was worth it just for John's self peripheral vision test. lol.
I'm glad I found you. I'm a southpaw with a right dominant eye. I've tried to this into an advantage by learning to use both hands to shoot with. I've a long way to go...
This is actually me too in many ways except that my left eye is never focused correctly from the time I was a kid they've always called it a lazy eye so I've learned to do most things right-handed so when I started shooting I started shooting right-handed and I'm reasonable at it I'm definitely no problems but I found that I can shoot left-handed just as well when I decided to try that
The members lounge there is awesome
Any plans on the new psa ak's making an appearance on your Channel
That lounge may be awesome, but not as awesome as Mrgunsngear!😉
Do they have strippers👀
Clarence Smith you don't want strippers near MrGunsNGear, I've seen him in "movies" before
Extremely helpful for training new or even people who've been shooting for years with problems they couldn't figure out.
Now we know how John picked up Mrs. Poet in that bar where he met her. She winked at him and he just started teaching her about fixing eye dominance.
Just started wearing readers, eyes have deteriorated a lot over the last year. I’ve been struggling with the sight picture. Even started squinting my left eye. The turning your head trick is a life saver.
Thanks John.
Is the war poet coming to Canada? I might buy one even with looming threat of confiscation just to support the cause.
Great video John. I am a right hand shooter but have recently discovered that I am left eye dominate. Once I figured it out things changed dramatically for the better.
She's a sweety. You notice the girls willing to try shooting seem to be nice people.
@Hang M. High Thank you for your service sir!
We haven't seen John pull in one of those coke bottle glasses, knitted toboggan wearing SJWs to train.
She follows instruction, and is not a know it all. That is a great quality.
I'm gonna do that perifial vision trick with my wife. That's a pro level dad joke right there. Lol
I'm glad someone else picked up on that.
I watched this video after 45 years of shooting with my dominate eye closed. After some slow drills and 150 rounds, I finally feel comfortable presenting a pistol with both eyes open. THANK YOU JOHN!
A little trick our instructors showed us during high school was to put a peice of tape on your glasses over your non dominant eye.
The thumbs down is from Mrs. War poet..😬
You win the Internet 😆
Oh yeah buddy 😂

Thank You for the tips.
Left eye dominate and am (roughly) 80% righthanded. 20% left handed.

I JUST found out I’m left eye dom.
Being right handed I kind of freaked out.
Have to go drive around base in a Hummer with a periscope and panties taped to my eye now.
Sure you're not a Nick Cage fan?
Thank you so much. I had so much problems identifying my left eye dominance and right handed. I went to my range and was so surprised at my accuracy. The best video on eye dominance by far.
My dominant right eye was focused on the beautiful hottie while my left eye was winking at John.😉
It's hard for me to watch this video and hear anything John says that lady is BEAUTIFUL
pacemaker83 - you are weak ‘bro’.
Hi John, !thanks to your video, I diagnosed myself with left eye dominance. During the entire video I was unable to see you at all but I could hear you perfectly.
Only reason I clicked is because of the thumbnail image of the gorgeous girl.
