I am 53 years old and I have been a life long shooter mainly pistol and I rifles. Shotgun shooting was mainly hunting. But recently retired from law enforcement after 33 years. So I started shooting sporting clays. Always knew that I am right eye dominant and I am left handed. Never realized the issue with cross Dominance as I would close my right eye. But I am definitely determined to overcome the problem and stop closing my right eye!!! It's a hard habit to break and I am fighting it every time I shoot. I have patched, used chapstick and bought the beads you talked about, not going through that again!!! I will get it straight!! Have a good one and May God bless y'all!!!

I think your spot on Mr. Pace and I'll tell you why. I am cross eye dominant and with that said, every sport that involved me using some degree of precision, such as baseball, basketball, and golf, has never stopped me from achieving good results using my right hand in light of the fact that my left eye is dominant. As it relates to shooting, I think that so long as you don't look at the barrel and your mounting and gun fit are consistent then your eye dominance is irrelevant. Just look at the target and your brain should know what to do with the gun.

I have been saying a lot of what you just did for about a year now. But I was checking dominance with finger. I always tell people to focus on a stationary object and mount while still focusing on object. It not only helps with eye dominance, but also not to sight down barrel. Thank you Roger, very good, simplistic explanation.

Finally someone who understands the problem. Roger you are the first person I have heard to suggest to do the test with the gun . It is the ultimate test in my opinion and by the way this is what I have been doing with every new shooter for sometime now.It simply is the very best way to make the determination. I suggest all one eyed shooters give it a try they might just surprise themselves not all but many will.

The comment you make at 6:00 about testing eye dominance with the gun is key! I am right handed, left eyed, as soon as the gun is shouldered and I test it, my right eye is dominant. I thought I was going mad and EVERYONE said it isn’t possible to change when the gun is mounted.
    Thank you, Roger.

After shooting by closing my left eye just before the shot for 55 years I challenged myself and switched to two eyes open left hand. It took a couple of years of shooting to be consistent and shoot 24 or 25 reliably. Interestingly if I shoot right hand now I can do it both eyes open. Even more interesting is when I shoot left my old muscle memory closes my left eye and I still hit the target (happens a lot). You instruction makes total sense! Thanks.

you have a new cross eye dominant subscriber. I have been an avid pistol shooter for a decade, and have recently fallen in love with shotgun shooting. I have spent so much time on the pistol because I can simply present in front of my left eye. so far, when shooting the clays, I will mount the gun, check the bead with my left eye closed, then focus downrange for the clay. like Nora, I have been keeping my left eye closed. I will be experimenting with other methods in coming weeks. so far, I have done alright with closing my left eye. I also use my bead quite a bit on everything but crossers. just my way after shooting pistols for so long. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and I appreciate you sharing your experience.

This video was a revelation for me. I've struggled with cross dominance for quite some time. I've taped my left lens and then took it off, only to put it back on again. But you're right. It only makes a difference if you're looking at beads and barrels and pointing at something. If you are truly looking and focusing only on the target, eye dominance should not matter. No one I know goes out pheasant hunting with taped glasses, but will put it on when trap shooting. What's the difference? None, that I see.

Great video. Love your style of teaching. I formerly closed my left eye, but switched to stereoscopic vision last year. It’s better. I acquire targets much faster, especially crossers. Forget about which eye is dominant. Perform the shooting basics and your targeting computer will adapt. I recently added a Shotkam. My trend was low left on misses. Amazing self coaching tool.

Thank you sir. I'm about to start shooting shotgun this year. Never shot a gun before but I successfully passed the mandatory Canadian security in handling of firearms course. I found out in that course that I'm cross dominant left eye - right hand. I'm glad I've come across your video before starting shooting. thanks. i am cross eye dominant. i watch a lot of videos saying to change sides. but it is a lot of effort and feelings just to change that. i decided to just stick with being right handed and left eye dominant, because i realize i have to point my barrel and not aim, and it is true never look down at the barrel. shotgun is a very forgiving firearm. i do a lot of hunting, so it doesnt make any harm in my shooting then doing trap shooting.

I’m right handed, left eyed - and it gives me fits. Started shooting left last year (I’m just an occasional shooter.). It helped, but never know which eye is going to activate from shot to shot. It’s as if they compete sometime. It’s fun, but I miss a lot.

I am Right Handed, left eye dominate and shoot with the gun on the LEFT side, left hand on trigger and right hand on fore stock, up there in age and always shot that way with a rifle and shotgun, very accurate, If I switch sides just for fun to see how it feels, hold on my right shoulder, not only Is it awkward I feel so stupid, but I shoot a pistol with my right hand, very accurate, but since I was a kid with my first BB gun and cap pistol, always shot that way. WORKS FOR ME, I always close my right eye so I will be on target

Thank you Roger, you've put a lot of work into this and it's massively appreciated.
I've not long started out, just bought my first shotgun and my coach's advise exactly mirrors yours (I'm right handed, left-eye dominant)- eyes open, look at the clay, ignore the gun. if you've got your mount and your lead right it'll break. Stop shooting a shotgun as if it were a rifle (One eye closed, staring at the bead/clay).
Looking forward to watching more of your videos, thank you for contributing your knowledge to the community.

Hi Roger, first let me say I love your series of videos . I have learned so much from them. The eye dominance thing has got me stumped. I am left eye dominant and right handed. I dedicated an entire year to shooting with two eyes and the best I could do was hit straightaways maybe 60%. Forget it on anything going right or left (left being worse than right crossing targets )
I completely agree in theory that it shouldn’t matter as long as we are hard focused on the target. What I don’t understand is that my sense of where the gun is relative to the target can change dramatically while the bird is in flight. My periphery can sense the gun is where it needs to be and in an instant it can shift to four feet behind the bird. Sometimes my periphery catches the left side of the barrel instead of the center in the rib.
When I check my gun mount, I have to close the left eye to get the beads to line up .
What might be going wrong for me Roger? I’ve been shooting with the opaque dot on my left lense and my scores improved significantly.
Keep up the great videos, I learn so much more from you than anyone.

    • @rogerpace9322
      @rogerpace9322  6 років тому

Jeff...you say..."sometimes my periphery catches the left side of the barrel"...if you can see that then I would suggest that you are not 100% focussed on the clay...make sure your gun shoots where you look (pattern board) and then just look at the clay and shoot ...if you see your barrels you are aiming and not pointing. Do not think...see clay...shoot clay...stay well and thanks for your kind comments.

I agree 100 percent that using two eyes is better than one. However this is something that I simply cannot do and have tried many times swapping to left handed and opening both eyes, both of which makes me shoot terrible. I am now in B grade and at the point where I constantly shoot 24 or 25 out of 25. I would also like to say that nora ross is also a one eye shooter and somone who I regard as an absolute champion. I think if what ever you are doing is working and you can consistently shoot well than there is no reason to change. At the end of the day we are all here for fun and to bust some clays. Happy shooting and thanks for the videos I have watched them all, keep them coming

I've never commented on youtube before but had to say thank you for this one. I'm left handed - right eyed, per the simple look at your finger trick. However, and as you so brilliantly mentioned, you should use your gun to determine eye dominance. Using my gun for the dominance proves that I'm left eyed dominant when shooting. There's a lot of people (and I was one of them) who put tape on their lenses and shouldn't be. VERY HELPFUL VIDEO!!!

🤔 first I think I realized I’m right handed, left eye dominant. For 16 years I have sucked at shooting. But from watching this video I think I am left eye dominant 😒. But I guess that does not matter now as I’m used to shooting on the right side and as i think of how I throw a ball, shoot a basket, aim for the arrow on the floor bowling, I don’t close my eyes! And to check eye dominance, I verify it by opening both eyes! Haha why take the extra step in closing a eye when having both eyes open is my eye dominance verification. And I always lose sight of the bird when I close one eye and lead. This might be a game changer! I’m excited to try it

Roger, thank you for the great video on eye dominance. I have been shooting for 3 years and improving consistently. I shot sporting clays this summer and my scores were going up. Then I moved to 5 stand and did horribly. A shooting coach noticed I was left eye dominant even though I shoot right handed. I am not sure that is my problem after watching your video. I think 5 stand exposes other problems (how I stand, peripheral vision etc.) more so that skeet, trap or sporting clays. I am going to work on the other items first before I make a major shift to shooting left handed. I tried a couple of rounds left handed and it did not feel natural. Thank you again for your well narrated and clear video.

Thank you for your excellent videos. Well spoken and to the point. I used to shoot for about 6 years at a yearly competition but stopped after team captain moved away and other guys quit. I am retiring soon and looking to get back into shooting. I shoot right handed but am left eye dominant and have problems with double vision. I keep both eyes open on skeet and close left eye after acquiring bird and only keep right eye open on trap. Seem to be better at trap but do good (17-20) at skeet. Biggest issue is with crossing birds especially on doubles. Have tried sporting clays and 5 stand some but shot very poorly (5-10). I even tried an attachment close to bead that blocked bead from my left eye and this helps but still can’t keep both eyes open. I am going to try some of your suggestions (I tried shooting left handed but hated it). I thoroughly enjoy your videos, tips and information. Keep up the videos. They are truly helpful

I have always found your advice to be well placed. I am right handed and right eye dominant. I recently suffered a stroke that affected the vision in my right eye. My daughter is a physical therapist and she has ordered me to make whatever adjustments I have to make to continue shooting. She feels it is much too important a part of my lifestyle to easily give up, so I have begun my search for advice. First stop, Roger Pace. Thanks, your information is encouraging. I would like to continue shooting right handed and not have to convert to left handed shooting. I’m heading to the range soon, any further specific advice?

    • @rogerpace9322
      @rogerpace9322  3 роки тому +1

Wayne Jenkins...your comment has touched me deeply and my eyes are slightly teary as i type this...sorry about your stroke ...i am going to give this answer the best shot I am capable of...firstly your daughter is correct in saying you should not give up shooting...secondly do not change to left handed shooting...you said you were heading out to the range soon...when you do go to the range ...say to yourself ...my gun will shoot where i look...NOTHING HAS CHANGED...I CAN STILL SEE THE TARGET...call pull and shoot the target...yes ...it might be a bit harder at first...but it may not...the most important thing is to go out there and BELIEVE in your ability...it's all about confidence...see bird,,,shoot bird...please let me know how you go...God bless you both...stay well and from the bottom of my heart...HAPPY shooting !!!

Great video u put in a lot of effort in making ur charts they look good. I used to shoot with one eye closed but after a lot of practice I now shoot with both my eyes open. My scores have improved a lot. I am able to see the clay better with one eye closed i sometimes used to loose sight of the clay and panic.

I'm left handed when holding a gun but right eye dominant. Im watching every video here on youtube to figure out what to do and what are my options? I like your video it helps. I don't think I will buy anything to block my one eye, I'm leaning towards learning to shoot right handed.

    • @rogerpace9322

Find which side you are most comfortable with...it's always preferable to shoot on the side of your dominant eye...but in the end we shoot with both eyes open and we focus on the clay not the gun barrels...thanks and stay well!!!

the funny thing is this is what i have been saying forever. I have a friend lady shooter who happens to shoot one eye. she shoots very well at times but has a problem with confidence. She being a lady and one eye, recently took nora roberts seminar, which she came away after being berated tottaly told to change how she set up and that you adapt to the gun instead or gun fit bruised and confidance broken and nora trying to sell some gadget rib to improve her shooting was ready to quit. I had helped her in the past she shoots well has good stance balence and her gun fits relatively well. and when she believes she shoots well .. What this gentleman is saying I believe is gospel dont ever let someone try to make you into them it wont work practice and look at fundemental set up proper set up and then look at target gun will find it like pointing and you will break targets. you cant buy the game, with practice you will gain confidance and release the champion inside yourself not someone elses.

I am a shooting instructor and I have found that everyone is wired a little differently. Saying all that to say this, we must do what works for that individual to break targets or birds. There are no style points or proper way its dead or lost. I do like that have have said that everyone should forget the gun and look at the bird ( target).

Ohhhh! This was super helpful! I just finished hunter ed here in Michigan, and I found out I am cross eye dominant. Every time I do the test with my hands and close my right eye I lose the target. But after you said to try it with a gun, I took out my new shotgun and aimed at a target with both eyes open then closed my left eye and I was directly on target every time! I was actually worried that I would have to switch shooting sides/hands. I was an Airborne Ranger in the US Army and I did have a difficult time in the beginning when shooting my M4 Carbine. So my guess is that I eventually trained my right eye to become dominant when I draw up a gun for shooting. I was wondering why they never talked about cross eyes dominance when I was in the service but it was probably because they knew that your domininant eye would eventually take over and probably thought it best not to ask soldiers to switch sides. Thanks for your video I really appreciate it!

Discovered last night that I am cross dominant. I'm a right handed shooter. I've been shooting since I was a child. I have always shot my shotgun with my left eye open but have recently begun to miss birds coming straight on and high, or quartering away from me and crossing. Your video made a lot of sense but here's my dilemma. If I close my left eye, my right eye takes over just fine. As soon as I open my left eye the barrel "jumps" and my left eye wants control. I'm trying to learn how to shoot with both eyes open but my sight picture is all messed up. Should I switch sides?
