- John Lydon, the punk icon known as Johnny Rotten, garnered criticism after appearing in two commercials for a British butter company. However, what is less known is that the proceeds from these ventures were used to reunite his band nearly 20 years after their disbandment.

My friend gave me a PiL tape and told me, "I hate this but you'll probably love it" and I did
PIL helped take rock from the '70s into the '80s with Talking Heads. As a '73 born Sex Pistols fan, I was almost not ready for them in 1990. But glad I took that leap of faith and was rewarded with many great songs for a lifetime. Signing off, DC area born guy
PIL is a band I gave zero chance as a teen and in my early 20s but once I got older and really sat down and listened to it, I appreciated for the uniqueness and solid songs. I think at first when I was young, I was disappointed that it wasn't the pistols but after I grew up I appreciated that John Lydon made it his own and was doing music with a positive message.

@@GuitarMattI was born in 1976 but had older brother and sister that where HEAVILY into the early 80's US Hardcore Punk scene at the time. Around 1985 they both kinda moved away from it and gave me all their music and records. Many early US and UK punk was in there. NMtB I just loved. With all this new music, music that NOBODY else was listening to around me, I fell in love with. This set me on the course of getting heavily into the punk scene and later on the early 90's Crust Punk scene and political activism, squatter rights etc. The germ, the seed to it all was the Sex Pistols when I was 10.

Oh and I forgot this EP from PIL called "Flowers of Romance" that has this track called "Religion"
This song, its lyrics are one of the most profound, profane thing John has ever written that blows anything else away before in terms of lyrical content. Everyone got upset because of "God Save The Queen" hit the number 1 spot so more "officals" heard it. That song got him knifed and attacked. If this song he did got as popular as the Pistols did, he would have been hanged.

To give John his due, it is very nice butter.
And he was brilliant in the promotion of butter advertising he has a special effect in natural character 😊
I can handle the ads, it's his allegiance to Trump that's alarming. John's views seem really reactionary - he just wants to appeal to the Daily Mail & Fox news cranks now.
Trump is America first. No problem with that.

Wonderful documentary !!! Stop all this persistent and unfounded criticism. You men are so jealous of an artist who maintained his authenticity and never sold his soul to innovate, perpetuate, and promote the rise of an entire genre of post-punk through creative self-funding. Such resourcefulness should be applauded as a blueprint for other struggling artists. If you want to criticise, instead of focusing on humble artists like Lydon; turn your viciousness toward the exploitative corporations buying up local radio stations and bolstering nothing other than digitally-produced, musician-eliminated, monotonous monoculture.
At least its real butter...Ozzy was marketing toxic soybean oil in a butter container. That has more chemicals in it than the drugs he took.

May the road rise to meet you ,, is an extremely old Irish saying , and probably reflects John's heritage. It was probably on a plaque in his living room when he was a kid as his mother and father were Irish immigrants that worked in London

Yup, same with the Pistols reunion and Filthy Lucre tour. I remember a quote from him when asked about it: "We've found a great reason to reform the band: Your money." 🤣
The main thing is he didn't do it to live in luxury, nor did he sacrifice his artistic integrity. He did it to further the art he was passionate about creating.

Love John but hate the way he disrespects his ex bandmates, I understand he wrote the lyrics and without him the Pistols would have been a non entity but without them he would also have been a non entity.

Clarification: "Johhny Rotten" was a skinsuit John Lydon wore for awhile when performing. The two have nothing in common but the the flesh they shared. I myself didn't realize this until I saw John Lydon in a fkn cardigan just being a human. Shocking, indeed. I realized this was someone's dad! We only see what he's brave enough to show us, and he's not a coward.
Silly people who discredited John for the ads...it was the only way he progress his music and career with the dosh. (Incidentally I don't think he's EVER said how much he got for them, has he?) Some years back, for a laugh, Wavis O'Shave (Google him)threw a tub of butter at Jihn on stage with PiL at Lincoln. He took at look at it and quipped 'Is this meant to be a witticism? Is this wot this country's coming too?' Which, I think was a splendid wordplay - as the ads were for Country life and Wavis threw Utterly Butterly lol Power to Liddy!!

It took him something like 15 years to get a dime from the recordings of the Sex Pistols. The rest of the band realized later how much they got ripped off and joined him in the lawsuit against Malcolm which won them complete rights to all of their music.
The Filth and the Fury is a GREAT documentary on the band and the members themselves and actively participated in the doc.
And the people that keep razzing him about it, as in comments on Facebook, know this but need to get down on him because of his beliefs. Bunch of hypocritical sheep.

Footages of PIL vol 2 are all from Tallinn Rock Summer festival from 1988. Estonia was still deeply in Soviet Union then btw. But Estonian TV made the proper TV recording of the festival including PIL.

I can understand the appeal, especially as it has a union jack in the packaging. But tbh all British butter; major brands and store brand , taste the same. Very good but not different from each other.

I was a fan of PiL for over 30 years until his Trump supporting bullshite. I had cds from back in the 80's that I broke and threw away. Screw him.

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: Nearly all artists have fucked up beliefs or personal lives whether you're aware of it or not. If you can't separate the art from the artist you're gonna be hard-pressed to find any art that doesn't come from someone whose beliefs and/or actions conflict with your worldview.
