I thought the boldest move here was putting The Wall in D tier. So many people live and die by The Wall, and even as a diehard Underhang enjoyer I could never bring myself to put The Wall so far down.
I think the strength of the Wall is that its difficulty is focused on making *ascent* difficult. For the expected path, climbing down the wall goes so much faster and makes the infrequent shelters a nonissue... but for those that want to try and "cheat" their way into 5P from the wrong direction, it poses an immensely difficult challenge that only becomes consistent with extensive experience. In some ways, reaching the top of The Wall can be as exhilarating as taking the roundabout path up the leg and through 5P.

i think to an extent my biggest issue with the wall is just. the white lizard room. which i'm almost wondering if that's just... a quirk of the AI, that they all congregate there. but the fact that it's such a long and usually uneventful climb to get back up to that room is the killer for me.
i also wonder if my gripes with the wall stem not from the wall itself, or even from the underhang trip to the wall, but rather just the fact that the gate to pebbles is a 5-karma gate in a zone where farming karma is basically impossible, forcing you to keep going past it and to the wall simply because it's way more convenient.
which boils down to just having an issue with a karma system itself, which i very much do and always have, but that's a story for another video ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i actually think it's great that the wall is designed specifically to be climbable, at an extra cost, i just wish that cost wasn't a massive timesink to get back to the parts that are actually challenging. it's designed to be tedious rather than, like, difficult
i also feel kinda bad for how low i put the underhang here bcuz it's really cool on survivor/monk (better than the leg, even!) but i just never enjoy it on any other difficulty due to the ridiculous spawns
i don't outright dislike any region in the game besides the two in F tier, for what it's worth, and even then... the gutter is aaaalmost D tier just for how good the non-swimming rooms are, but it's not enough for me. but like. most of the regions in the game are pretty dang good and i like them, just, not every region is as good as the others!

    • @gammaboy4568

@@CawCophony honestly, I've found the underhang is more enjoyable than the leg *because* of the difficult spawns on other characters. When playing on the "hard mode" characters, the spitter spiders just ruin any and all appeal the Leg otherwise has over the Underhang. Constantly getting stunned by offscreen creatures, and there's just too damn many of them to count. The underhang is consistent, and the whole experience between the leg and the underhang are the reason why the Exterior is my favorite region of the base game.
I will say, though, the max karma gate is... a confusing choice, honestly. I actually do like the Karma gate for that first playthrough. It forces you to learn how to navigate each region before they let you move on to more dangerous territory. But the gate in the Underhang is the worst gate in the game, imo. You'll notice there's a fairly consistent trend gates have elsewhere: if a gate is meant to be entered for progression, it will almost *never* be a max karma one.
Max karma is typically reserved for regions that are meant to be challenging relative to the current one, and usually not intended for the main story from that direction. Many gates like this will also hold off on providing a shelter, to prevent new players from being stuck. Although, not quite max karma, the DS gate in outskirts is actually a fine example. The one in GW satisfies both.
As such, I find it confusing as to why they force you to "learn" an otherwise perfectly *linear* region. There's plenty of food nearby, but forcing players to learn to cope with the grapple worm just to strip it away with 0G is baffling.
More criminally, the gate in the underhang is *too* well hidden. If I'm guiding someone, I have to essentially spoil the gate to them for fear that they will miss it and trap themselves at the wall, missing the much more substantial 5P region. The one-way lock at the wall would not have been necessary if the wall itself wasn't so easily accessible from Industrial through Chimney.
Generally, I prefer the leg's presentation for survivor and monk over the Underhang... but the Underhang is inoffensive on repeat playthroughs, and it puts the grapple worm to better use. Getting good at the grapple worm is incredibly fun in the Underhang, you can essentially ignore the presence of DLLs once you learn the ropes (pun intended). If not for that damn gate placement, I'd insist you put it much higher.
As for the wall, yeah...the white lizard room is a pain. It's not a bug either, that's a "swarm" room. Some creatures have a preference for some rooms, and will go there to hang out. I find most of the trouble for that room, though, is on the way down. It's a sufficient challenge for going up, but going down you're given no choice but to push through them.
What makes it annoying, however, isn't the abundance of lizards so much as it is the *type* of lizard. White lizards are notoriously stubborn. They refuse to budge when given sufficient stimulus to think you are literally anywhere else, opting to rather wait for you to come to them. The only thing saving that room for me is the big pit you can conveniently knock them into.
      Otherwise...
That pole plant placement is fantastic, especially if you *do* come from the underhang. The first time I ended up there, I could only reach the top by letting lizards carry me (hence, I could not make it to the gate)... but the one time I did make it that far, the pole plant snatched me. I have never loved pole plants more. Going through the white lizard room filters out a lot of those first attempts, and makes that moment so much more glorious.

    • @CawCophony
      @CawCophony  Рік тому +7

the pole plant is funny i just don't like how on controller slugcat likes to grab poles when the stick is tilted even the tiniest bit up. not really a complaint about the wall itself just a mechanical complaint that i had a convenient time to talk about. but once you know it's there it's harmless just annoying
also yeah i generally agree with your thoughts on the gates but i'll freely admit i don't think i've ever done the leg as any slugcats other than survivor and rivulet 'cause arti and spearmaster bypass it with the precipice lol. spitter spiders are a bit annoying but i'd generally rather deal with them than Four Cyan Lizards In The Same Room

On my first playthrough I thought that going from the underhang was a shortcut for really good players so when I went up through wall I was so confused I was like "huh I thought the wall was supposed to be long and somewhat difficult and isn't there supposed to be a gauntlet with low gravity or something???" Still the only time I have gone through 5p is rivulet so far.

I am so glad to see Chimney Canopy getting the love it deserves! I feel like it’d be more hated to most people because of the lack of shelters, quite linear path, difficult creatures/platforming, and (to a lesser extent) the lack of change throughout the different campaigns outside of the bridge to Exterior collapsing.
It’s always a fun but challenging region to traverse, and it’s worthwhile to do so because it connects Industrial Complex and Sky Islands directly with The Wall without having to go through Underhang.
I’m probably bias because Chimney Canopy was the first region where I started to get a feel for the combat in Rain World. Not exclusively the act of fighting creatures, but also the strategy behind deciding what fights to take based off of reward and also how I would take those fights. It was a great region to learn all of this inside of, because of the challenging situations that (almost) always seem to have a way to salvage them. It feels like one of the most fair places in the entire game, which isn’t really saying much in such a purposefully unfair game, but it feels good due to the contrast.
Undergrowth! Oh how great it is, despite only existing for Saint.
Really, I should probably say that part of why it’s good is because of the fact that it only exists for Saint. Stepping into Undergrowth is like a breath of fresh air, because everything is so alive. It’s such a stark contrast to the dead white snow on top of ruins that fills the rest of their campaign, and it just breaths with pure contentment of the habitants that spend their cycles there.
I absolutely love how they put an echo in there, and I do for a couple of reasons. It forces you to go to this amazing area which would most likely be overlooked by most otherwise, and it gives the message that satisfaction can be found within the cycles, that life should be enjoyed in the moment.
Undergrowth is just a huge WOW. It doesn’t need good level design and adequate challenges to be arguably one of the best regions in Rain World, and that’s not because the rest of the regions are bad! It takes Drainage System, a region with incredible level design, and takes away basically everything that made it great. It then adds its own incredible features which are of a completely different type than those of Drainage System.
I appreciate how opinionated this ranking was, because a lot of what makes Rain World’s environment so unique and interesting doesn’t follow typical “good design” philosophy. It’s not perfected to give the player the best experience possible, but to give the player a quite variable and open ended world where they can find the experience the game wants to give them, the difference being that you have to actually seek for what Rain World has to offer rather than the game attempting to guide you to its wonders.
    Rain World do be pretty

Also, YEAH, a submerged superstructure fan!
That's on of my favourites too, and I also first explored it as monk! That was an EXPERIENCE
At first it tickled all my nerves with creepy stuff - a bit claustrophobic, a bit thalassophobic, and that mixture of underwater and eroding construction that is so unnerving. And I met giant jellyfish, which are my number two real life terrifying creature right after spiders.
But heading through those feelings was so amazing!
There weren't many threats as monk, just me and a giant puzzle of how to have enough air, paired with a feeling of being close to a friend (it's Moon, after all!). Finding my way through all of this never felt too overwhelming. I never used jetfish, but instead perfected my bubble weed routing, and it felt like an accomplishment.
I met one really stupid leviathan in a giant flooded room, which ignored me completely as I took a good look swimming right beside it. I explored some of veins, and for the first time in a playthrough had to accept that some parts were just inaccessible for now. Then I made it to upper parts and it felt so peaceful there. I explored a semi-familiar layout of Moons memory conflux and I found a room with singing lightnings and it was magical...
And I got a pretty cloak, which looked like a dress, and I got to gift it to Moon later!
As much as I understand why people don't like idea of going there as any other slugcat except Rivulet and maybe Saint, but my experience was so personal and so great, that I can never regret going there early

Ok, I will be in the absolute minority here, but I actually like past Garbage Wastes much more than the present ones. And the main reason is simply... the terrain. Yes, the main reason I dislike Garbage Wastes is not the scavs, not the leeches, not vultures etc. - it's the awful rough terrain with all of these non-stop one-block sized hills and valleys making it incredibly frustrating to traverse. The past version having much less of it is automatically a massive improvement for me. Also, I don't find accid pits that hard to avoid, even as Spearmaster.

All of five pebbles (maybe besides recursive transform arrays) is my favorite. Then again the best part of rain world to me is the fear and relief that comes with beating a hard region. I just beat it today and for me it's absolutely TERRIBLE. Idk, the whole thing was just so frustrating to navigate. I like hard things, but this was just annoying! All the time I was dying due to circumstances outside of my control (like I launch myself somewhere and Opsiey Daisey, there's Rot randomly coming from off-screen that left no-audio cues and now I just can't do anything other than drift towards it!). Some people dislike RW's movement system, but I'm really one of the people who adore it! I just think that it's absolutely not made for antigravity to be fun. Especially with rot on every wall.

funny story, I had almost the exact same experience with submerged superstructure but then had the almost opposite reaction (and also, for me, this happened on my First First playthrough basically immediately after finding LttM for the first time, you could say I was out of my *depths*). I don't like the region because I got myself trapped there for, like, 8 hours on my first playthrough. I was super fun until I realized "oh shit I'm stuck." (Also I misunderstood the passage tutorial, so when I used Survivor passage on my first playthrough, I literally just passaged to the shelter I was already in and I had full karma when that happened, so I just didn't understand how the quick travel system works). So, I had to go online to look up the map, learn about how creature spawns work, learn some movement tech and stuff, and I felt kind of robbed since I now had this knowledge that actively makes the game less immersive. It's definitely one of the instances of "how much I like this thing and how good it is are on opposite ends of the quality spectrum." Anyways, much later, I reach Five Pebbles for the first time and have this slight deja vu since the structure looks familiar to something, but I'm not sure what, and I think that led to me having an elevated impression on the Five Pebbles region. I tragically found the island, but didn't notice the cloak. Wouldn't have mattered anyways since I literally just ate all of her neurons. But kinda funny.

If a new player endures its hardships, they will not abandon the game later. Drainage creates a high skill ceiling, but enciurages tenacity and gives the player early game knowledge if scavs and swimming. Great region with nice athmosphere.

for the topic of why Garbage Wastes (past) isn't a completely new zone like Waterfront Facility, or Undergrowth (I get the impression that The Rot would've been a completely new zone anyway due to just how different it is and how much it adds compared to the usual Five Pebbles) it's because of the Conditional Links system that the devs only made later on in Downpour's development.
before that if they wanted to make any significant changes to a reigion at different points in the timeline they needed to make it an entirely new area, the Conditional Links system allowed them to make some pretty big changes to an area (e.g. the past Garbage Wastes) whilst still having it be the same area in the code.
they've outright stated in the dev commentary that they didn't feel like Waterfront Facility and Undergrowth merited being their own seperate regions but the fact that they hadn't made the Conditional Links system by the time they made those areas demanded that they be coded as entirely new areas. if they'd made the Conditional Links system earlier (or if they'd made Waterfront Facility and Undergrowth later) it's possible that those regions would've just been past Shoreline (though possibly still with the new name) and future Drainage System (again though, very much possible they still would've given it the new name, especially since almost every other Saint region got renamed)
they also mention that Rivulet's version of the Memory Crypts was their first use of the Conditional Links system because the usual Memory Crypts just wouldn't be feasible to play through with Rivulet's shorter cycles... perhaps if they'd never made that system Rivulet would've gotten their own unique version of Shaded Citadel, just so that they could have the Memory Crypts changes their shorter cycles demanded...

well in that case I'd say there's a much simpler answer then.
the past version of the Garbage Wastes is already the Garbage Wastes...
like... perhaps if we'd gotten there a bit earlier, before Pebbles first dumped the Rot there, a different name would've been appropriate (though this seems unlikely since it generally seems like Pebbles just dumps everything there, including his old pearls, it's possible that the area has been 5P's Garbage Wastes for as long as 5P has existed).

While I don’t necessarily agree with some placements, your justification and reasonings for why you put them there are pretty much bulletproof. Like you said, you can’t really be wrong when ranking regions because it’s such a subjective experience that everyone has differently, and I love that about RW. Really the only one that actually threw me for a loop was the wall and FILTRATION of all things at #9. I’d probably switch the 2 if it were me but everything else is perfectly reasonable in the way you framed it. I love the wall because I use the chimney canopy route to avoid all of the exterior, but I understand why you like the exterior. It’s a lot more fun after you experience it once. That first time is brutal. I also had a much easier time scaling moons superstructure than I ever do pebbles if I take his exterior for some reason. I understand I’m an outlier bc moons leg and wall have ridiculous spawns

I have had such a painful time with Garbage Wastes while in my expeditions AND in my hunt for those last few pesky arena unlocks I'm still missing. I finally got fed up and used Devtools to get the Red Liz unlock because it is _not_ logical to make me drown for it when I already died repeatedly trying to get there and Hunter lives on a timelimit anyway...
Industrial Complex, however, is my favorite region and the one I am most familiar with. I've come to think of it as my Home, Karma Farming paradise, and central station to all my travels. I was desperate, after hours and hours on my first playthrough of getting courage to deal with shaded citadel memory crypds and the leg/underhang, i thought i would have some spare time at five pebbles but i didn't! Because i went through the unfortunate development route. Why? Because i thought it was the only route, because i was DUMB. Also because it was the only region on five pebbles that people talked about.
So after hours of dying and almost giving up on rain world i decided to see the map and. For my surprise. There was another route you could take. And i straight up did that. And men, i was flabbergasted in a good way, it was so peaceful, without any DLLS. Random gods playing was so good. And i finally reached five pebbles, i could finally rest.

I've played over 30 hours of rain world because it was a recommendation by a lot of people. The weird thing is, even now I don't "get the game" in any way. I know as much of the story as I did at the start of the game and I still don't know what to make of the gameplay because it feels like I'm playing two different games. I just don't have any clue on why the game is doing a lot of things and that's kinda what makes me kinda hate it. Surprisingly I loved the first ~8 hours a lot and that's the only bit I can say was actually fun and felt good to play. I was just discovering all the different things and exploring the map, while constantly finding out new things by testing or acciddnt. But after 8 hours the game changed completely from a game about exploration to a total mess of an experience where you retry the same cycle for hours, trying to get past everything in a semingly linear map without dying randomly or gettting killed by the rain. After that the game switched to being as before again, but soon the same thing would happen again and I would reach this weird position where it took hours and hours just to get past a section that you have already done hundret times now. This happened like 3-4 times overall which might not sound that bad, but it was for me. And after all of that and knowing noting more than at the beginning, I realised I somehow walked a circle and was now back outskirts from the (kinda cool actually) chimney something area. I tried to go a path I somehow missed down in drainage system and now got stuck there. And that's kind of why I am writing this. To someone who has played the game before, is this intentional? Am I doing the right thing, or did I somehow miss some crucial information? I am like actually confused on what is going on in this game and that's why I've decided to finally try to find out what in the world is going on and why the game is rated as a masterpeace. If you have any answers, I would be very excited to hear them because I gave up trying to stay spoiler free now. Thanks in advance!

I like it for different reasons though
My first experience there was as Monk with neuron glow and maximum lizard reputation, so despite it being a dark confusing maze, there was little danger and it felt somewhat comfortable even, with lots of shelters and it was fun and relatively safe to explore
Unlike the birds and centipedes infested upper part with barely any shelters on the way and a challenge to make it half way through. That's like memory crypts but worse! More interesting, with leviathon lake and all that, but much more punishing and as result more annoying

so there is hope, the shaded citadel will become cool and stop messing with my arachnophobia? thank god lol.... beeing there the first time, cause i didnt know how to progress between moon and pebbles was a nightmare and a half.... espacially if you picked up some of this popcorny Grassticks in the wasteland in order to turn your surviver into a 2 spears carrieing killing machiene. i wonder if thats a new addition that you can have eatable spears as a survivor since ive never seen anyone use them in any rainworld video but the down side of it is, if you have no lightsource in this particular place, everytime you stop moving, it feels like a spiderlag is over your body wich freaks the hell out of me everytime,
35:29 ahh i remember, the old camera used to swap between upper and under section everytime you jumped on a plattform. that was a nessecairy change, threw me off so many times
41:29 whats that game? looks interresting.
57:03 i hate this jump as a survivor. devs please make the gap a bit smaller, i had to climb the entire wall at least 5 times, to finally make the jump, not mentioning, the 12 deaths i collected via the invisible white pathblocking lizzards on the way. that jump is just mean and im still getting the hang of the movement. i realy do like the ovearall area as it has a realy ballanced approach to all mechanics, including, befriedining my toll scav homies and beeing an important asset for the story progression it has it all. besides of that jump and the obvious wall segment with the cluttering lizzards blocking the only path to progression the most cozy place in the game
1:12:50 100% agree. drainage system made me realize that new players, need a bit more directional guidance in order to have a good starter experience.
if you do the same mistake like me, never having played the game before and decide to start the game in the jolly coop campaign you'll realy be testing out the limits of your friendship by accidentally chosing this path, by not knowing where to go first. this game realy is punishing for people wich did not look up a couple youtube tutorials first. alone to propperly set up the jolly coop campaign can dick your experience totally over.... the first 6 groupe deaths in my case happend, cause the shelters somehow have been turned off lol, so we never left the outskirt, before the first rain washed away that dream lol.. and thats usually where the rainworld coop experience ends xD so incase someone reads this with the plan of playing coop, do make sure to propperly read all the options in your remix section you will want to change the input commands for every single player and you will want to make sure, to set your settings as easy as possible, including unlocking all the slug cats there to have the best sort of multiplayer experience, this game is different to what you usually played and if you or your friends are not liking to suffer, its gonna be a short journey if you dont follow these steps.

And the DLL in waterfront doesn’t prove anything, waterfront is also connected to pebbles and GW which are areas we know for a fact have rot so it more likely just came from there. Also it’s on the left side of the area, closer to those two, making it even less likely it has anything to do with moon.

Also, I think squidcadas are best fren so I loved sky islands 🤷‍♀️

Memory crypts would be my number one pick. I just adore the dumb metal birds that go clack clack. It feels like the perfect representation for me of the absolute adoration and hatred I hold for this amazing game. When I discovered rainworld I tried to find out everything I could about it before even buying the game so all of the major plot points had been ruined for me by the time I started playing.
I was on a call with one of my rainworld friends whe I first came into memory crypts because they were guiding me through the game and all that they said to me about it was to just keep going across and to look out for the miros birds, providing no other information about the region. Memory crypts was one of the only true surprises I have experienced in this game and the absolute terror it struck in me the first time I played it as survior at first made me frustrated but it only ever made me enjoy the game even more. To this day I cannot get over the clanky scissor birds that will always hold a place in my heart.
Also, as a completey unrelated comment; THE THREAT MUSIC IN GARBAGE WASTES ROCKS. I LOVE THE BOINGS SO MUCH OH MY GOD.
I'll have to disagree with you about the swimming choices tho. Rooms with water in them are always so hard for my computer to handle so they always end up being really laggy and overall unpleasant to traverse.

But my sample size is also pretty small so who knows.

honestly it depends on what you're better at dealing with? industrial has tougher creature spawns but drainage has the much more dangerous environmental hazards. the big issue with drainage is that the game does frick all to teach you about swimming and breath mechanics so people just end up dying in the flooded tunnel or near-softlocking themselves in the bottom left shelter

Dude drainage system sucks, I’ve just started playing yesterday and I’m still trying to get out, but there’s axolotl lizards everywhere blocking every dang path.

why... cant I find people who like sky islands as much as I do? I love subterranean and hate chimney for its vulture spawns and me falling all the time and.... sky islands is so much fucking better and feels like a combo of the things i love most. And after getting wich movements induce coma in squids, I just breeze through this region everytime
aaaaand since im now in the part of the video.... yeah, fsr i always went to the right side of chimney after fleeing from the first swarm room, wich might just be the reason for my bias

I'd like to point out that downpour changed the rot layout in unfortunate development, so it's a lot easier than it used to be, which is probably why a lot of people don't like it.

i dont understand why people dislike drainage, its probably my favourite non-sub region

I think it's their memory of going there too early on accident (be it from Outskirts or accidentally doubling back from Shoreline), not knowing how to swim or deal with enemies, and then having 2/3 entrances be extremely difficult unless you know what you're doing.
On hard mode spawns, it's one of my preferred regions to pass through because there's very little bullshit here once you know what you're doing.
If I could change anything about it, I would either simplify the path to Garbage Wastes (perhaps with fluctuating water like Spearmaster) or maybe have the region connect to Shoreline instead of GW so that it feels more viable as a route. I'm always annoyed that it pours me out in GW when Shoreline itself is ALSO connected to Subterranean (if it weren't for Hunter, I'd also say remove the Subterranean gate from Shoreline).

It’s just boring, especially on non hard mode campaigns. The only remotely interesting spawns are all concentrated in the top left of the region, and as survivor they’re not even that special, just a few basic lizard types. Harder campaigns at least add dropwigs and centipedes for a bit of spice, but again they’re just in that top left area. The rest is just boring IMO. Red leeches and snails don’t have interesting behaviors and barely pose a threat, and the swimming challenges have simple enough layouts that they really aren’t all that interesting once you understand the swimming mechanics. I mean the lowest passages are just straight lines in terms of level design. The more puzzley areas on the route to filtration are better but still not very exciting once you’ve gone through once and understand how to do them.

i gotta say i absolutely agree that gutter is one of the worst regions (or subregions), like yes its cool but i hate getting stuck in the mud
seeing all the saint regions higher up reminds me of how much i speedran through the game to clear all the spoilers first, gotta replay it someday!!
amazing a tier!! i very much disagree with filtration system being on there, mostly cuz of how cramped everything is and how easy it is to get too lost, but opinions exist
HELL YEA!!! drainage system in s tier! i love it but maybe thats just me getting accidentally softlocked on monk and developing stockholm syndrome for it
    AND THE ROT??? actually amazing
imo the s tier is amazing except for submerged superstructure but thats prob cuz i went there as survivor, got stuck and passaged my way out
the wall in d tier just feels wrong tho, id say the climb up is supposed to be challenging because u usually go that way if ur looking for a shortcut to pebbles and not the experience of going through his can, the climb down being a kinda wind down from seeing a second iterator, witnessing general systems bus, and dialogue for the first time in the game ever
