Having successfully slain a dangerous Illithid and its dwarven general, the Vox Machina find themselves surrounded by a small army of Duergar. They once again take to the air, hoping to clear the war camp and travel deeper into the territory of the Mind Flayers. Not quite fast enough, they are attacked mid flight and brought crashing to the ground, within a stone’s throw of the tunnel that will hopefully lead them to Lady Kima. With some quick spell work from Tiberius and Keylith, the group is able to flee further into the bowels of Khaloor and find shelter long enough to heal their wounds. Pressing forward, they quickly realize their path is growing more dangerous with every step into the darkness. Running into a pair of ogres hauling some rather exotic cargo, the Vox Machina quickly find things moving from bad to worse.

Cause grog is the pile of meat. He needs less healing than a friggin squishy wizard psion.
They're the only class with a D12 for hit dice after all.
To be fair that's only 8d6 (avg. 28) damage, not really all that much to a level 9 barbarian

I need to point out that the English captions are gold. First of all, it's awesome that there are actual captions, not just auto generated ones, and when Laura demonstrates underdark at around 22:00, the captions say "(speaking Underdark)"
I know whoever made the captions will never see this comment, but I want the universe to know that I saw that choice in caption-writing and I enjoyed it very much.

Yeah Percy had been relatively quiet the first few episodes, outside of showing off his powerful (and unreliable) firearm.
Kinda woke up this episode and had some good lines.

@@andelknijft7030 I'd need to rewatch to give specific examples, but he tends to take tactics that utilize OOC knowledge of the enemy he's facing.
@@jonathonbartos5420 He's a dragonborn sorcerer. Intelligent and resorceful. It makes sense for him to act the way he does most of the time.
Sometimes it doesn't, but that's true for everyone who's ever played D&D. It's impossible to stay perfectly in character for so many hours all of the time.

A lot of people think Matt is a great dm because of his skill and ability to voice so many different characters. I think he's a great dm because he can herd a band of eight chaotic stupid friends without raising his voice.
I know I would be just standing in the middle of the chaos like Regina did during the flight in Mean Girls

The only thing that bothers me about that, 4 years later, is the under dark is a place, the main language spoken there is undercommon.

Matt is such a nice DM. At around 1:12:00, he sees Keyleth is out of spells and recognizes he needs to give the party a place to rest, and instantly creates the alcove for them.
I've seen this arc multiple times and never realized that he made the alcove up on the spot. I guess it just sounded natural enough that he played it off. Both a nice DM and a skilled storyteller.
pure skill, theres times when you want your players to be low spells or low health, and theres times where you need them full so you can deal epic damage

The episode before this and this episode made me fall IN LOVE with D&D and this cast. The momentary look of surprise and panic on Mercers Face when Marisha says "I'm no longer an eagle" and then the calm at which he works everything out. Incredible.
i started playing in 2012 and our first campaign was so much fun (our best imo). i just discovered this with campaign 2 and while i wait for each week's new epi i am trying to catch up on c1. so great. Matt is a superb dm and the rest of them are just a joy to watch and it is so easy to fall in love with their characters. especially c2!

Glad you are taking interest in this grand hobby. Finally got around to CR and at about the same rate albeit 2 months back.
One of the best things to ever happen in our campaigns was when we were standing outside a sanctuary of Lloth in the basement of a Drow fortress trying to figure out to get in without dying. Our barbarian, in character, said, "Grunt bored," opened the door, and walked in. A tentacle trap was triggered. He rolled a nat 20 on his save and role-played it as literally punching the first tentacle. The trap quivered in fear the rest of the session.
That may be actual, tangible evidence of the dice gods at work! They reward those who do what their characters would do regardless of the possible negative outcomes of doing so.

Yes and no. While the DM is like the god of the game and can destroy you with a snap of his finger, the DM also is not unfailable.
I would even suggest arguing IF the circumstances are right for that. Meaning, if the DM forget's something about some rules, story or spells etc, while you know and are able to proof that it's wrong, argue. But objectively and polite.
Also, don't argue too long, if the DM won't budge, put the argument on a hold, roll with their decision and go back to your argument after the game.
@@MikaeruDaiTenshi Yeah it's true, though it's more my speed to just roll with it to keep the game flowing and bring it up later for future games. (Unless it's a pretty serious 'someone is going to die' situation)

@@NixahmaAs someone who was recently diagnosed with ADHD, who started watching this show 6 months ago (I put old episodes on for background now) I see SO many symptoms in Laura. I know Travis has ADHD, but I really wouldn't be surprised if Laura does too - issues with object permanence is a common trait, if I put something in a drawer I will more than likely completely forget about it, even if it's something important that I need all the time.
I wonder how many times Trinket has been left behind by er Vex? Vax? Haven't figured out which is which yet

I believe that Trinket is secretly a Druid of the Air Ashari Tribe and can cast Summon Woodland Creatures. Think about it: Trinket is in a cave deep underground. Alone. Bored. The only logical explanation is that either he can cast or Pike secretly brought one down, assuming something along the lines of this would happen, and not tell anyone. He could not have brought one down with him because he has to eat, the only place he could store it is in his mouth.
I love how there are so many things we could be speculating about, and we chose to speculate about the random butterfly.
That Mind Flayer's role play of eating the General's brain was sickening. here have a thumbs up!

@@jonathonbartos5420 oh for sure he's one of the saving graces of the show. Without him running such a tight ship so efficiently I imagine folks would get much more triggered by just how terrible these guys are at remembering how to play the game considering they're already mid level characters. Im always a bit surprised when they get confused when asked to make a saving throw or something simple like "what's your spell dc" or how advantage freaking works in the beginning few episodes lol.

I actually love that they're hanging out and eating pizza. Having started on season 2 and now circling around, this is really cool because it's less of a production and more of a gathering of friends. Having an adult beverage, eating tasty food, all while playing tabletop RPGs with close friends. This is every about the game that I love.

Matt runs a game. Throws in a damn Mindflayer as an NPC who repeatedly threatens the party with death and is generally creepy as hell, entire party falls in love. I run a game, throw in a normal NPC who's a known thief and hasn't once lied to them or even threatened them and has literally had her kidney ruptured trying to save one of them, nothing I say can possibly reassure them she's on their side.
Because Mindflayers are adorable and give expert massages.

I get this was a year ago but I'd wager all the players are thinking all those niceties are just a ploy to get on their good side so the NPC can betray them.
I think that players like NPC's who have unique characteristics and abilities that the rest of the party doesn't have. I know that, Spoilers: Watching the Mighty Nein take all of the NPC's that were intended to be antagonists and making them their friends because they thought the character was hot or interesting, and the NPC's that they remembered the most had something unique to remember them by and fun interactions. Sometimes, a nice NPC that helps can be forgettable or suspicious. I also think that giving them a motivation that's usually a little grey is helpful. It's easier to trust someone who's willing to admit that they did bad things or they want to do bad things, and still wants to help the party, kinda like the loveable asshole archetype. The player characters are also a factor. Beau and Fjord and sometimes Caleb were constantly suspicious of everyone they came across, and didn't really start trusting people and each other for a long time because it fits their characters to not take anything at face value and watch for betrayal for reasons that fit with their backstories. The only reason why they ended up making allies is because Jester trusted everyone she came across point blank and Caduceus thought that risks making allies were risks worth taking.
But yea, that sounds really frustrating... I wish you luck in the future of making NPC's that your party will appreciate and learn to love!
@@faithjolley6034 The game's been over for a long time, but I'ma join this convo anyway cause it seems interesting. Essentially, I was running a game set in the SCP Universe, and she was one of several important NPCs who was involved in the initial breakout. Both of the players and two other NPCs were unique SCPs, each of which had abilities I came up with myself. Her ability was that she was immune to the anomalous effects of most SCPs, and could communicate with most sentient ones. This was both good *and* bad, as she wasn't immune to physical effects and she was still very much human, although she accidentally befriended the Plague Doctor because being immune to his anomalous effects means that he didn't register her as having the plague. She also got yeeted into the nightmare dimension by uncle Larry for a bit. Essentially, because there were so few players and the party was bound to be fucked up repeatedly, she was the NPC I used as essentially another player, and she ran mostly a support role.
@@gerbilpanda1703 In this case it might be NPC's behaviour not fitting the setting. I don't know much about SCP Universe, but if GM in Call of Cthulhu session introduced us to overly helpful and nice NPC at least one person would start getting twitchy.
