We advise to not use "we can't afford it" but rather, we have another priority at the moment so that we will be able to do what we want when we are debt free. Comparison is hard, especially with children and when they see that their friends have big elaborate parties. However, what a kid will remember will be the experiences not the grand gestures. Maybe offer a small overnight party where there is a focus on crafting fun things or doing a movie marathon. Anything can be amazing as long as you make sure to make it so.
