    They fail to mention that they could have been stranded on the islands. You can’t take a huge ship up to tiny islands, you take the row boat. My idea is they forgot to set anchor on the ship, went on the island with the dingy, the ship drifted and they got stranded and no one thought to check and see if they were on the island.

She was found far from the Azores... but she'd been drifting for weeks at that point.
      which is a detail of the story that makes it so much less mysterious. Getting in a rowboat on the high seas is a fool's errand unless truly desperate. But if you're within sight of land? suddenly it's far less ridiculous.

If they purposely left the log behind in case someone chanced upon the ship, why not write the reason for abandoning ship? To me it suggests a last minute dash - some papers and navigational instruments were taken but not much else. It's very peculiar.

  • @souptec
    @souptec Рік тому +107

    The Mary Celeste was a brigantine about 100 ft long and weighed about 200 tons and had a crew of 11. It was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a "HUGE SHIP".

      @matti2328 Рік тому +3

      As Morehouse and his crew approached the Mary Celeste, they noticed that the ship was in good condition and that there were no visible signs of damage or distress. However, when they boarded the vessel, they found that it was completely abandoned. The lifeboat was missing, and there was no sign of the crew or passengers. All of their personal belongings and the ship's documents were still on board, and there was no evidence of a struggle or violence.
      The mystery of the Mary Celeste has puzzled investigators and historians for more than a century. There have been many theories about what happened to the crew and passengers, including piracy, mutiny, and a freak wave. Some people have even suggested that the ship was visited by aliens or that it was the victim of a supernatural event. However, no one has been able to provide a definitive explanation for the disappearance of the crew. The case remains one of the most famous maritime mysteries of all time.

    • @buffalokay
      @buffalokay Рік тому

      I mean there are so many potential possibilities. Did a crucial component of the ship break down? Did they run out of food and take the life boat to a nearby island they saw off in the distance? Maybe they took a day trip to check something out they saw in the water, or took the life boat to go visit a nearby ship crew on another vessel, and somehow the boat drifted away. Another possibility is they were trying to fish from the lifeboat. Maybe they lost power aboard their ship. Maybe they hit something ant thought the ship was going to sink.

    • @matti2328
      @matti2328 Рік тому +1

      @@buffalokay It is difficult to say which theories about the Mary Celeste have not been ruled out, as the true cause of the ship's abandonment and the disappearance of the crew remains a mystery to this day. Despite extensive research and investigation, there is no concrete evidence to support any of the theories that have been proposed about what happened to the Mary Celeste and her crew.
      Some of the theories that have been proposed over the years include the possibility that the ship encountered some sort of mechanical failure or malfunction, that the crew encountered some sort of external threat, such as pirates or a sea monster, or that the crew abandoned ship for some other unknown reason. However, none of these theories have been supported by concrete evidence, and it is likely that we will never know the true cause of the Mary Celeste's abandonment and the disappearance of the crew.

    Story Time: I once made a dumb rookie mistake while hiking in 'true wilderness' in Wyoming. No city or town or house for 100 miles in any direction. After setting up a campsite I thought "I really want a drink I left in the cupholder of my vehicle" so I left my campsite to hike miles back to my vehicle to get said drink thinking I could 'remember the way pretty well' no compass, no map, no phone (no service anyway), and I thought I was 'pretty close by' my vehicle. In reality I was miles away, a full day of hiking away, and all of the mesas looked the exact same, suddenly the sun went down and all I had was a single flashlight with me. I had left my emergency hiking pack I never hike without at my campsite. And I remember thinking "I could easily get lost and never found out here if I don't find my vehicle or campsite in the next 24 hours." (No rivers, lakes, ponds, no water in this area) That was the first time I ever thought "This is it. This is how it all ends. You fucked up badly enough no one will ever know what happened to you for years." it was such a last minute bizarre thought too "I want that drink in the cupholder". No one would have ever known that was the motivation for such a stupid simple disappearance. Long story short I found my campsite again and vehicle after much effort to establish where I thought I must be given an error in heading. And I feel like the Mary Celeste captain must have made some hideous rookie mistake like that without any second thought.

      @@tacitus6384 As the Eastern Indians of North America have large amount of DNA already from Europe that would be hard to tell. But the testing of area was interesting. Early arrivals speculated survivors of Atlantis and some could pass for European and not just near there. Now the major arguments is did they come over with boats running along the ice bridge between Europe and North America that existed at same time as land bridge on the other side or as European DNA found with one group very far into Siberian Asia did they cross the land bridge and continue on to the East.
      But just the evidence of the premade buildings brought over from England being disassembled and neatly stored indicates they left deliberately so moving in with natives most likely. It has been made into more mystery than it deserves. With no signs of struggle and the complex task of taking the buildings down and the name of local tribe carved into a tree it almost certain thinking they were abandoned they moved into the tribe as no ship had arrived the next years thanks to war between England and Spain. And then that part of the tribe moved off till knowledge of them being there lost. It the several years no ship returned that makes the moving in with a tribe a natural result. One sinking yes but several considering the amount of time passed they must have thought they were abandoned and forgotten. And thus why no attempt to contact the whites when they did show up again by then it was just the decedents of the original group fully tribal identity by then with no desire for contact.
      Recent claim by African American group that they are descended having mixed with the tribe seamed plausible with the old records they had. Their oral history recorded some generations later indicates that story. At the very least if false the fraud done very long ago and for some reason never reaching outside of the group. Many instances other places of native tribes interconnecting with freed or escaped blacks.
      The fair skin again though actually all over eastern North America there is very strong evidence now that Europeans came over. One Northern tribes first story of them arriving on their lands state whites lived there.

    I subscribe to the theory that the red oak barrels leaked and caused the fumes to be unbearable, so the captain set the ship up to air out, ordered everyone onto the life boat tied to the ship and while they waited for the ship to air out, the rope was cut untied or otherwise unteathered and they all watched on their lifeboat watching the mary celeste sail away without them. That is the accepted theory as to the disappearance of the crew. If you have worked with Denatured Alcohol or Acetone then you would realize that excellent ventilation is needed. Otherwise, you get very lightheaded...
      So when poisoned by their cargo, the crew vented the hold and sought fresh air in the lifeboat/launch. Since they were not thinking clearly because of the fumes, they tied the rope poorly to the Celest and found themselves alone in the sea with their ship sailing away without them. And once they perished from inadequate water on their small lifeboat/launch, they were no longer there to keep it afloat & so their bodies were never found...

I walked alone (I really didn't know anyone in Ohio) for a couple hours and the forest opened up into someone else's backyard. I think i have to play a bit Poirot here and ask, how many of the proposed answers to this have considered the psychology involved?
    The captain's young daughter being on board could very well have helped him to make a more hasty decision than he otherwise would have.
    My guess would be that the bad weather the day before the last log entry directly or indirectly disturbed the barrels enough that the red oak ones started leaking overnight(or perhaps leaking -more- or getting spread out faster due to water taken in from the bad weather, also potentially causing already leaked alcohol to spread faster and further), shortly after the log entry, this is discovered, the crew gets in the lifeboat as the captain not quite panics, after opening the hatches to air out the fumes, ties the boat to the ship while waiting for that, and then the increased oxygen content in the mix from said airing allows it to be extremely easily ignited(possibly the increased air circulation causes it to reach a lit candle or similar) and explodes, severing the towline in the process, or possibly even damaging the lifeboat and the people in it(and very likely stunning them enough that they cannot react quickly enough)...

    • @kateb1761

      Unlucky trees? There was a fire place on board. That sounds like the Captain's cabin may have had a carbon monoxide issue. A few captains died. Possibly of related CO issues like heart attack or wot not. Maybe the whole vessel was affected below deck too. If they thought like they would have back then (like you with your unlucky forest) they could have put the CO poisoning down to a curse and gone in the life boat already disorientated. The Captain was off course too. Was he disorientated too? They were at the same latitude as Spain in December in Winter. The weather was poor. The fireplace was mentioned in a newspaper article about the disappearance. It was probably burning. I bet the issues with the ship's history occurred mostly in Winter too. I came up with my theory before I cross referenced the date to check if it was Winter and it was. It seemed unimportant at first and thus did not acknowledge it. But after I came up with my prognosis I checked the latitude and date. This kind of feedback after coming up with the theory is affirmation that a theory is on point. This type of after the fact affirmation will continue the further you look into it. CO is a flammable gas too. It could have mixed with the alcohol fumes. A superficial fireball was much more likely than alcohol fumes on their own. They had oil lamps then. The Mary Celeste wasn't cursed in my book, it was a CO trap.

    Great vid! I remember reading about the Mary Celeste in a book entitled "Famous Mysteries of the Sea" back when I was in grade school. (Back when the mystery was only 100 years old...boy do I feel ancient!) There was another story of a ship stuck in the ice for many years with the frozen bodies of the crew still on board, but I can't remember the name of the ship. Possible subject of another vid? Unless it's just a legend with no basis in fact...

    Ok, my thoughts have always been with an alcohol spill scenario. Not with an explosion though. There was a spill, they feared an explosion, they opened the hatches to air the fumes while they took to the lifeboat. The lifeboat was tied to the ship, but the line broke. The ship was still under sail so was much faster than the boat, the lifeboat got stranded. They actually thought they would only need to be in the boat a short while, hence leaving most of their belongings onboard. Someone, a volunteer maybe, should of stayed onboard. Just a bad miscalculation. Whatever happened, bless their souls.

    Imho the alcohol-fume version still holds up. It would explain why they left the sides open (increased air-flow) and let the ship go forward (increased airflow).
    I don't think they went on the boat in case the ship blows up, but to reduce health-impact of the fumes, as well as the risk of any of the sailors accidentally creating a spark and setting off an explosion. when they are all on the boat, they can't ignite it.
    The smell would have probably created a cloud behind the ship, so they could have just waited for the air to stop smelling like a tavern before going back. A plan they, for whatever reason, couldn't finish back to the ship.

      Well, it's not 100% certain what REALLY happened here. We can only deal with probability here. It seems fairly certain that the crew abandoned ship for some reason and either couldn't return to it or chose not to. The reasoning becomes a little less certain as many theories such as explosions, fear of sinking, ghosts, etc can't be confirmed by anyone. We can all have our guess as to exactly what happened and why, but we can't know for sure.

Then THEY moved the earth down to the 3rd orbit to get it away from all the asteroids. You see, the debris in the Asteroid Belt is actually the once great continent of Lemuria. For info, Mary Celeste was an American merchant brigantine (Marie Celeste was a fictional ship based upon Mary Celeste {first name spelled differently}) She was a two master with square sails on the forward mast and mainly triangular sails from the aft mast, the aft sails configuration could be changed and a brig could be rowed. Much smaller, faster, and more maneuverable than a Man 'O' War.

    Part of the "mystery" is the salvage inquiry was more interested in screwing the crew out of their salvage rights than finding out what happened.
    The evidence that the Celeste's crew abandoned ship while carrying a dangerous cargo was overwhelming but the inquiry kept trying to prove foul play had occurred and didn't investigate plausible theories.
    The only mystery is:
    Was it an explosion, the fear of an explosion or toxic stinging fumes that drove the entire crew into the life boat?
    I don't think they believed the ship was sinking , in that scenario you have time to make log entries and grab personal items.
    They had 9 barrels worth of pure wood alcohol sloshing around in the bilge and no way to get it out because the alcohol would cause the pump to jam (freeze).
    So they were sailing along letting the wind carry the fumes away...when the wind died the fumes became unbearable.

    I think the most logical explanation is Morehouse threatening the passangers of Mary Celeste and making them "walk the plank" explaning both the lack of signs of a fight and the fact they were never found since they drowned and sank to the oceanfloor. He probably did this because of the salvage he would get, and he convinced the others to do it by offering them all share of the salvage (little did he know he wasnt gonna get as much as he hoped)

    In the 1970's there was a Mary Celeste episode of the documentary series "In Search Of..." hosted by Leonard Nimoy. They presented the hypothesis that Captain Briggs ordered the hold aired out, and the alcohol vapor from the leaking barrels met the cold sea air, producing a cloud of condensation. The captain and crew mistook the vapor for smoke and they panicked, thinking the alcohol was on fire, and abandoned ship. Later a storm blew up and snapped the rope towing the lifeboat, which might also explain the water in the hold and the damaged sails and rigging.

    • @marhawkman303

By that time it was most likely abandoned and they were waiting for rescue on the island. • @tomtransport
    @tomtransport 2 роки тому

    As others, I'm buying the leaking barrel idea, It leaked and some were found later to be M T. They went to the lifeboat because the ship may explode B 4 it aired out. Seems a better chance of surviving on a lifeboat back a hundred yards or so then a ship that explodes with you on it. Plus they thought they were closer to the Islands then they actually were, so it's good all around till the rope comes off the rear of the ship and the Islands aren't there either. As to taking the navigation stuff, whether on a big ship or small you still need to know where you are and are headed being pulled by larger ship plus from the fumes they were not thinking right either. Makes the most sense.
