@@saucysauce593 That's such a straw man. That isn't at all like buying a pack of beer. It's like gathering your extras from your pantry and donating to those in need. And still, for some reason, some of us Americans believe that we shouldn't give money to those in need. Fine. At least let us give them our disused excess, and give them what they need. I thought our dedication to freedom and justice for all would be stronger than some paltry argument about the necessity of spending, but clearly those who are against the aid care little for actual freedom and justice for all.

For simple people, for those who loose their lives for the interests of these who are on the top. PEACE is the base of democracy. And now Ukraine is turned into a concentrating camp, and “freedom” to get out costs very much, in American $$. Do you want to know that price in numbers? But even then they need to have decent level of logical and critical thinking, awareness of cognitive biases. More often nowadays people at first believe in something and then look for evidences to support their hypothesis ignoring those ones rejecting it (confirmation bias). And, it's disgusting part: many people don't want to truly respect each others lives, rights. They sincerely believe their nation is better, greater, has a right to be the worlds policeman, to decide others actions. Chauvinism as it is. How many people e.g. talk about the right of peoples to self determination? About referendums as a democratic way to state and consider people's volition? In this case I would say that it's not about Putin's or Zelensky's ambitions.

Direct dialogue would clearly be more constructive than fantasy. But this cannot be done, otherwise the war will have to be ended, the West will stop supplying money and offering to attend all sorts of meetings, and they will also force him to pay off his debts.

Thats why the dea*h camps still stand to show people what happened. There is not alot to be said other than what happend, and there is things to be shown to burn it in peoples mind that something like this can never happen again. Hi Lex. Let me write in english, though russian is my native language and ukrainian is the language that my kids learnt at school while we were living in Odessa. The language of my grandchildren will be German. You devoted too much time speaking about languages. I suppose you did it because you believe in this Pro-Putins version of the history of Ukraine and the importrance of using " proper" language in order not to offend someone. You said at the beginning that you had read a lot of books to understand the situation better. Good for you. But you didnt get a thing. I will tell you how it was to live in the Ukraine being a russian citizen. I am married to a ukrainian man and came to Ukraine in 1998. I was brainwashed in my childhood, at school ( still in the soviet time) when I lived in Siberia. I was taught fake history and fake literature. It was hard for me to accept the truth about World war 2, when the new facts were disclosed. Living in the Ukraine and bringing up my kids there has changed me and opened my vision of the world. I am grateful to Ukrainian system of education for many things. We were a russian speaking family and NOONE has ever discriminated us, be it at school, at work or in our private life. It will be difficult for you to accept the fact that THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY DISCRIMINATION OF THE RUSSIAN-SPEAKING POPULATION IN UKRAINE. So forget about this issue and try to find a deeper reason why Russia started this war.

What’s made clear by this revelation by Zelenskyy “in most cases we didn’t receive money, we received weapons” (paraphrasing) is that, the military industrial complex in America saw this invasion (maybe even egged Zelenskyy on to make such a stand) as an opportunity to make a lot of money; and are not compelled by the spirit of the Ukrainian resistance, but more so by a cash grab. Which, the money undoubtedly goes through the system and ends back up in the pockets of government officials in America. It’s sort of like money laundering. Politicians can just take from the piggy bank, but route it through defense companies, which then pay the politicians by means of lobbying or whatever.

In 2022 Russia was ready to sign a peace agreement and completely withdraw its troops, but Ukraine decided to continue the war and as a result lost a lot of people and territories. In vain. For the stupidity of zelensky.

Do Americans not study economics. The money goes to american manufacturers, which replaces donated stock nearing expiry date. America gets new, up to date equipment in its stores whilst promoting jobs in the arms industry. The funds create a multiplier effect. People employed in the arms industry spend their wages, providing employment to retailer, restaurants, builders, etc. These people, in turn, spend their wages creating jobs and money for others. Next thing you know, you have economic growth. Have Americans never wondered why their economy is growing better than Europe or other parts of the world. how crucial ukraine is to russian nationalism,
that russia needs some kind of war or it will literally implode,
how you cannot negotiate with russia if you are not in the position of strength because of what russia is and who putin is it just doesn't work like this either you force him to accept your terms or he will force you to accept his.

It's naivety. Also probably laziness, it's easier to hope than to act. Western countries have the same issue when it comes to dealing with criminal elements, they assume they can be reasoned with. A hardened career criminal doesn't care about your ethics, you have to throw ethics out the window completely in such cases if you want positive results, but people don't learn this quickly, some even hold ideologies that deny this truth, like progressivism. It's sad.

For the Americans that did not listen. Most of the time guns where provided not money. The money was given directly to your weapons manufacturer. To reduce the cost Ukrane wanted to provide their cargo planes, but that was rejected. Seams that someone in the midle needs to profit and line their pockets with the war. As i understand half of the aid was spent on transport costs to fill someones pockets instead of removing that cost and letting ukrane use their cargo planes.

The US looks at its military depots, where equipment is collecting dust andthen dusts equipment off before sending it over to Ukraine.
This equipment was paid for decades ago.

2023: Lex elogiously recommends reading Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands (Europe btwn Hitler and Stalin)
2024: "Don't you think Putin loves his people?" and unapologetically pushes a narrative that Putin may be misunderstood
That completely lost me. As a western European I was taught WW2 history quite in depth, but somewhat weighted toward the US/UK/FR "allies" side of things. Knew the big events in eastern Europe but man, that book goes deep and was an eye opener wrt Stalin's and soviets' actions and total disregard for human lives, rights, freedoms and other peoples, civilizations, cultures. How they gluttonishly grabbed land, invaded neighbors and massacred and deported millions of people from Poland, Ukraine, Belarussia, the Baltic states and on and on. Mind numbing massacres, no rule of law, ferocious land grabs, infiltration of coveted nations, etc. Not much has changed, apparently.
Having read, discussed and recommended that book himself, how on earth can Lex now claim Russia / Putin are doing what they are doing out of love, incomprehension, or need for recognition that-was-trampled-on-by-the-West's indifference ?
How can he not recognize similar dark, evil motives behind Putin's actions as Stalin's imperialistic expansionism ? How can he not see parallels with what Putin's Russia did in Chechnya, Transnistria, Georgia 2008, Crimea 20014, Ukr 2022 ? (not to mention their destabilizing influence in the Middle-East, Africa, etc)
I am at a loss trying to reconcile the Bloodlands-Fridman with his attitude & line of questioning in this interview w Zelensky.
    What happened ?
