More often nowadays people at first believe in something and then look for evidences to support their hypothesis ignoring those ones rejecting it (confirmation bias). And, it's disgusting part: many people don't want to truly respect each others lives, rights. They sincerely believe their nation is better, greater, has a right to be the worlds policeman, to decide others actions. Chauvinism as it is. How many people e.g. talk about the right of peoples to self determination? About referendums as a democratic way to state and consider people's volition? The problem is that Zelensky himself forbade talking to Putin and now simply makes up in his head what Putin is thinking and what he is trying to achieve. Direct dialogue would clearly be more constructive than fantasy. But this cannot be done, otherwise the war will have to be ended, the West will stop supplying money and offering to attend all sorts of meetings, and they will also force him to pay off his debts.
Russia has always said that it doesnt want Ukraine to be a NATO country with US troops. That is completely different from the bullshit you are babbling about. Not a single word from Putin has been about eradicating Ukraine as a country.

Incredible interview, and such rare access to a sitting leader during war time. While it can be said that to have such a naive interviewer is what put Zelenskyy at ease and led to him to speak so frankly, it is too often difficult to listen to Lex repeat his nonsensical points and redundant proclamations for a dream. Zelenskyy shows the maturity and kindness of a father trying to explain reality to a teenager. In that sense, it is a PR masterstroke, as it is the way the West needs to see him. The language of my grandchildren will be German. You devoted too much time speaking about languages. I suppose you did it because you believe in this Pro-Putins version of the history of Ukraine and the importrance of using " proper" language in order not to offend someone. You said at the beginning that you had read a lot of books to understand the situation better. Good for you. But you didnt get a thing. I will tell you how it was to live in the Ukraine being a russian citizen. I am married to a ukrainian man and came to Ukraine in 1998. I was brainwashed in my childhood, at school ( still in the soviet time) when I lived in Siberia. I was taught fake history and fake literature. It was hard for me to accept the truth about World war 2, when the new facts were disclosed. Living in the Ukraine and bringing up my kids there has changed me and opened my vision of the world. I am grateful to Ukrainian system of education for many things. We were a russian speaking family and NOONE has ever discriminated us, be it at school, at work or in our private life. It will be difficult for you to accept the fact that THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY DISCRIMINATION OF THE RUSSIAN-SPEAKING POPULATION IN UKRAINE. So forget about this issue and try to find a deeper reason why Russia started this war.
1:25:24 😆 Zelensky is spot on. Lex needs to understand Putin is the only one that doesn't want to make peace with Ukraine. He has no wish for Ukraine to exist in the long term. He told us all he believes they should not really be independent. Putin is the one that needs convincing, not Zelensky.
@@dimas3829Ukrainian people have chosen their leader, at least they have this choice, what you cannot say about your tsar putin, but you russians are used to be governed by the tsars who you consider as half gods. That’s why russia was the last country in Europe to abolish slavery, slave blood runs in russian population. That’s why you rather go kill your neighbor if asked so by your leader instead of using your brains. That’s just your russian mentality
Zelensky is a dictator who turned the country into a concentration camp and the people into slaves (closed borders; people are killed and maimed in the military registration and enlistment office; caught like animals on the streets; killed while trying to swim across a river or forest to Romania, Hungary, to freedom)
My Ukrainian is very poor. I think the English translation sounds robotic. I don't know how to convey to people that the original doesn't sound so strange or so intrusive. The questions are quite neutral. And Lex's Russian isn't bad at all. More or less like mine. There is nothing more Russian than saying to someone that his Russian lenguage is so so...
What’s made clear by this revelation by Zelenskyy “in most cases we didn’t receive money, we received weapons” (paraphrasing) is that, the military industrial complex in America saw this invasion (maybe even egged Zelenskyy on to make such a stand) as an opportunity to make a lot of money; and are not compelled by the spirit of the Ukrainian resistance, but more so by a cash grab. Which, the money undoubtedly goes through the system and ends back up in the pockets of government officials in America. It’s sort of like money laundering. Politicians can just take from the piggy bank, but route it through defense companies, which then pay the politicians by means of lobbying or whatever.
A German here listening to this awefully listen-to interview. Fridman, you repeat Merkel and Scholz "I have a dream" narratives, proven to be naiv. Man I am really disappointed here! Are you really that desperate to get an interview with Putin? Would you have interviewed Hitler in May 1944 to make a peace deal? Sorry, I think, you should quit. Fame enough for you! My sub ends here.
one remarkable thing Ultra-Left and Ultra-Right have in common is them both count Intellectual-Centrists as traitors and fools. that's how one can spot a fuск!ng Fascist unmistakably, btw. you won't be missed
I see a lot of value in this interview. Not for you and me, but for the ones who are at the level of Lex's questions. Joe Rogan refused to have Zelensky on his podcast. I think this is a net positive for Ukraine.
Both sides need to be heard for peace to happen. Otherwise, how will you know who is right in the conflict and who is the real villain? In 2022 Russia was ready to sign a peace agreement and completely withdraw its troops, but Ukraine decided to continue the war and as a result lost a lot of people and territories. In vain. For the stupidity of zelensky. But Zelensky doesn't want to admit it, so he shouts loudly that Putin is a villain and can't be negotiated with. The only correct strategy is to stop listening to Zelensky.
Do Americans not study economics. The money goes to american manufacturers, which replaces donated stock nearing expiry date. America gets new, up to date equipment in its stores whilst promoting jobs in the arms industry. The funds create a multiplier effect. People employed in the arms industry spend their wages, providing employment to retailer, restaurants, builders, etc. These people, in turn, spend their wages creating jobs and money for others. Next thing you know, you have economic growth. Have Americans never wondered why their economy is growing better than Europe or other parts of the world. It has a huge arms industry, which other countries dont have.
Don’t day it up loud, russians don’t like the Americans to hear the absolute logic. They will do anything to let American people believe that Ukraine is bad, and it was Ukraine that attacked russia, the first time in human history that a non nuclear power attacked a nuclear power. So it’s Ukrainian fault that they even exist. Even when it rains, it’s Ukraine’s fault.
Americans don’t study anything.. lol plus there is a misinformation issue in the country. They really think people like Putin and trump care about justice lol
As a Finn I can understand why he can't forgive Russia. We still haven't forgotten our war with Russia. I also had to correct that Finland army is only little smaller than Ukraine, and that is because of Russia.
Finland was ally of Nazi Germany ? How about siege of Leningrad ? Finnish contribution to the siege was passive, but you know how many civilians died ? he still haven't forgot war with Russia)
Everyone knows and remembers the Leningrad blockade. 900 days of pain, suffering and horror. More than a million people died there, 600 thousand of them from hunger. The Finns are accomplices in this. We have not forgotten. You remember too!
In 1809, a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden, ending the Russo-Swedish War. Sweden cedes to Russia the territory where Finland is now located. What do the Finns have to do with it? The war was between Sweden and Russia! The border was between Russia and Sweden! It was under Russia that you were given land, and under it you started to pretend to be something. It was Russia that gave you considerable autonomy, your own legal system, permission to write in Finnish. Everything that the Finns were deprived of under the Swedes, they were afraid to look at them and walk on one side of the sidewalk. Russia granted you the privilege of exempting you from Russian military service. We have not forgotten whose land this is. The deed to it is still valid.

Thank you, Lex Fridman, for conducting this interview with President Zelenskyy. What an admirable man from an admirable nation. It is quite clear who the aggressor is in this war, so I will not stop to support Ukraine until victory over the invaders. Thank you, Lex Fridman, for showing us the big picture. Hard to imagine the amount of stress the president went through all this time. Being in the middle of a war where every minute could be your last, while also making decisions that affect millions of lives, must have been unbelievably intense.
It’s true. He proved that he’s an actual leader even though I was sceptical and didn’t care for his comedy work at all. Now watch all the bots poison comments sections with “what leader 😂” and “he just wants our dollar”.
That was a fantastic interview. I truly hope that Zelenskyy does more of these, as it might help more people in America grasp the real challenges facing Ukraine. It's so important for us to understand the situation fully and offer our support.
I'm genuinely impressed not only by Zelenskyy in this interview but by the AI technologies. I understand Ukrainian issue more now. I can’t believe that we all almost fell into believing that Russia is some kind of conservative utopia and we all needed to learn from them. Why didn't mr. Zelenskyy speak about it to us before?
nobody wants to listen. many central/easter europeans (as me ;) wrote about russian imperialism at twitter and so, but americans/western europeans are more afraid of wokism or immigration xD
That because the Russians have an really good propaganda department that has an army of bit trying really really hard to convince you to not support Ukraine aid so they can continue their wars against Europe
Dude... he's been talking about this for 6 years... and even before he was elected president. And all of Eastern Europe has been screaming about it for 3 decades.
It makes me sad to see your stance on the Ukraine war. Iv Been a fan for years. I hope you change your stance on Ukraine and see Putin for what he is. I think I need a break from you for a while.
Whatever your feelings the reality is ... Ukraine is in a bad position and with Trump cutting aid.... Worse. But the Americans wanted it, that's what they voted for.
Such a great interview. I gained a much deeper understanding into the war. My heart goes to the people of Ukraine…and all the young men…who sacrifice their life and future…
And what exactly is the new information you learned - that children die in Ukraine? Or that Zelensky refuses any sort of negotiation or compromise to achieve peace and wants the war to continue until there's not a single Ukrainian left?
We've seen your version of peace and justice, unnecessary bloodshed and a destroyed country, now the world needs peace whether or not CNN is telling you the other way around, your little bubble will soon burst as Trump takes office you will see the ceasefire and peace that you and your ilk hate!
Not really a "bloody nightmare", more like a jammed record of the same superficial idea being regurgitated again an again. We can't make "peace" if the other side wants not
Those questions most probably were staged to give Zelenskiy an opportunity to properly say thanks and position himself as big supporter of the two based on the outcome of recent presidential elections.
In the end Zelensky has to get close with them. I mean things are looking grim now in the front lines, and if they don't like Zelensky it will look way worse.

Many thanks to you and Volodymyr Zelensky for your amazing interwiew full of accuracy in the analyses, common sense, humanity. The truth has been restored about the war in Donbas and on many other points. Mr. Lex, you are going to see Putin in order to obtain peace but please keep in mind that Ukraine is being attacked and must win this war and eventually recover its 1991 lands. I wish you a very nice day. Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava!
Lex Fridman is a blogger and has no right to judge the people of Ukraine and their president how to survive under putin's bombs. Talking about security guarantees for the aggressor is like ignoring justice and the fundamental principles of right and wrong.
There is freedom of speech in America, in contrast to the totalitarian dictatorship in Ukraine. Where the president is long overdue. So get used to freedom of speech. So Lex has the right to say whatever he wants :)
1:26:04 budapesh memorandum NOT WAS, but IT IS The Security Guaranties , but US FAILED to fulfill it obligation, so US is liable for damage of this war.
Russia broke their promise from the Budapest Memorandum by invading Ukraine. The US and the UK broke their promise within the Budapest Memorandum by not helping Ukraine against an invader. So who’s more guilty? The one who invaded Ukraine or the one who failed to defend Ukraine from that invader? Are you able to answer that question?
I've just come out of my eastern european bubble and i feel like I'm in preschool again. Zelensky over here needs to spell out the most basic things. Those are not two boys arguing over a toy in a sandbox and they just need to sit together and apologise. All of it: how crucial ukraine is to russian nationalism, that russia needs some kind of war or it will literally implode, how you cannot negotiate with russia if you are not in the position of strength because of what russia is and who putin is it just doesn't work like this either you force him to accept your terms or he will force you to accept his. how if the terms of peace won't be handled with care it won't be a ceasefire just a short break, It terrifies me on what level of understanding are we on : (
Russia went quiet for two decades and the USA completely forgot the lessons of the Cold War. The fact there are Americans who support Russia's aggression against a country they promised to protect is such a sad state of affairs.
@@croisaor2308They've lost their minds, it's all because democrats kept crapping on Russia and their elected president was accused of being pro russ on cnn so the right wing decided that because democrats bad, russians must be good. It's naivety. Also probably laziness, it's easier to hope than to act. Western countries have the same issue when it comes to dealing with criminal elements, they assume they can be reasoned with. A hardened career criminal doesn't care about your ethics, you have to throw ethics out the window completely in such cases if you want positive results, but people don't learn this quickly, some even hold ideologies that deny this truth, like progressivism. It's sad.
Can’t wait for Lex’s interview with victims of domestic violence. “Ladies, have you tried opening your hearts and giving forgiveness a chance? 😌❤️”. “How would you like to respond to the credible allegations that your tuna casserole was in-fact overcooked?🤔”
I hope you understand that, while you want that man in jail, he will not be okay with that. My dream is that you will find it in your hearth, to come to a compromise, which works for both parties involved. 🙂❤ While physical and sexual abuse is bad, that man still loves his freedom. I pray for love and peace
For the Americans that did not listen. Most of the time guns where provided not money. The money was given directly to your weapons manufacturer. To reduce the cost Ukrane wanted to provide their cargo planes, but that was rejected. Seams that someone in the midle needs to profit and line their pockets with the war. As i understand half of the aid was spent on transport costs to fill someones pockets instead of removing that cost and letting ukrane use their cargo planes.
And huge portion of arms ended up on black market. Zelenski is biggesr illegal arms dealer in the world. Where, do you think, Mexican cartels are buying arms from?
Aid to Ukraine is literally not even a drop in the ocean of our spending lol. People pretending they care about military spending just now for Ukraine is hilariously stupid. They are accidentally telling me they have no clue what they are talking about or anything about what we spend on our military every year.
This isn't even true. There is no "money" being sent as a result of Ukraine support. The US looks at its military depots, where equipment is collecting dust andthen dusts equipment off before sending it over to Ukraine. This equipment was paid for decades ago. But even then, people should blame congress then for authorizing more spending for "Defense" every consecutive year for decades. This has nothing to do with Ukraine aid.
I liked the video, but I only like Zelenskyy part. ❤ Thank you, Mr. President, for mentioning Georgia and for putting out a truthful analysis. We will not flee, we will fight for our country. We want, and we will have a democratic, European and free country. Best wishes from Georgia to Ukraine. Слава Україні! Героям слава!

2023: Lex elogiously recommends reading Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands (Europe btwn Hitler and Stalin) 2024: "Don't you think Putin loves his people?" and unapologetically pushes a narrative that Putin may be misunderstood That completely lost me. As a western European I was taught WW2 history quite in depth, but somewhat weighted toward the US/UK/FR "allies" side of things. Knew the big events in eastern Europe but man, that book goes deep and was an eye opener wrt Stalin's and soviets' actions and total disregard for human lives, rights, freedoms and other peoples, civilizations, cultures. How they gluttonishly grabbed land, invaded neighbors and massacred and deported millions of people from Poland, Ukraine, Belarussia, the Baltic states and on and on. Mind numbing massacres, no rule of law, ferocious land grabs, infiltration of coveted nations, etc. Not much has changed, apparently. Having read, discussed and recommended that book himself, how on earth can Lex now claim Russia / Putin are doing what they are doing out of love, incomprehension, or need for recognition that-was-trampled-on-by-the-West's indifference ? How can he not recognize similar dark, evil motives behind Putin's actions as Stalin's imperialistic expansionism ? How can he not see parallels with what Putin's Russia did in Chechnya, Transnistria, Georgia 2008, Crimea 20014, Ukr 2022 ? (not to mention their destabilizing influence in the Middle-East, Africa, etc) I am at a loss trying to reconcile the Bloodlands-Fridman with his attitude & line of questioning in this interview w Zelensky. The problem is that Zelensky himself forbade talking to Putin and now simply makes up in his head what Putin is thinking and what he is trying to achieve. Direct dialogue would clearly be more constructive than fantasy. As a person who lives in Ukraine, in relative safety by the standards of our country, in Odesa, I liked the interview. I understand that it is rather aimed at people outside Ukraine, but to be honest, it is scary that after 3 years there are those who don’t understand that just a signed paper doesn’t protect from anything. To be honest, I’m very tired of the war, I can’t even imagine how it is possible to live without constant anxiety inside and outside, but would I like the fire to stop, and in five years the maniac gained strength and came to kill again, to see Russian soldiers in Odesa? Definitely not 👎
Don't you feel sorry for your compatriots who die every day?

@@gg-kc2tsBut who is killing them?
Hi Lex. Let me write in english, though russian is my native language and ukrainian is the language that my kids learnt at school while we were living in Odessa.
Thank you for telling the truth.

The only correct strategy is to stop listening to Zelensky.
if you compare Putin with Hitler, you have learned nothing from your country's history.

That completely lost me.
