There is absolutely no excuse for Mushu to be such a massive, selfish jerk. I prefer Mushu's subplot to be about proving himself worthy of being in the pedestal. But it turns out that Mushu was worthy all along, just that it turns out that Mulan's ancestors were too short-sighted to see that.

    • @firemiracle

Exactly, like all he could’ve done was tell Mulan “mulan! We have a problem! Your ancestors told me that if you marry Shang, they will take away my job as the family guardian! What do we do?? I don’t want to lose my job but I don’t want you both not getting married!”
It wasn’t that freaking hard! 🤦🏽‍♀️

Same. Honestly imo the ancestors were the real villains in this movie. The head guardian always treated him like crap and cringed at the ending when being forced to give Mushu his pedestal back. I honestly don’t get why Mushu would lose his pedestal just because he wouldn’t “be Mulan’s guardian anymore” when he literally created a dang warhero.

Also, considering Shang combined the family tablets, did the ancestors not once in the time they were beraiding Mushu about him not being Mulan's guardian anymore think that he was gonna do that? Why is everyone so stupid in this film?

@@baffledbrandon3132 at least in the first movie he apologized and was willing to be the gong boy. Mulan 2 should have just been a spin-off featuring Yao, Ling and Chien-Po as the leads, as they bond with the princesses.
If you want Shang and Mulan in there, fine, but execute their relationship the way Jambareeqi pointed out, and maybe juxtapose his growing bond with her to the three and their growing romantic lives.
This would make the film a lot easier to stomach, and not an utter chore to sit through.

The director of the first movie was actually asked by Disney to return for the sequel by inducting a treatment for Mulan 2. His idea involved Mulan and Shang being sent up north and taking on the undead Hun Army, lead by Shan Yu.
There was also supposed to be a second sequel to Mulan that brought back the screenwriters from the original, but got cancelled due to lack of interest (and/or because of how poorly the second one did).
So yeah, Mulan 2 is ultimately a giant middle finger to the original in *EVERY* aspects down to development.

    • @kristinahuchison2511

At least Mulan 2 had likable qualities, even if the entire story was a huge mess. Pocahontas 2, Hunchback 2, Belle’s Magical World and other sequels were complete middle fingers to their respective movies because they either straight up didn’t care about the characters or completely failed to understand why people loved their original movies to begin with. Hunchback 2 was literally only made to give Quasi a girlfriend because one of the biggest complaints the movie got was Quasi not ending up with Esmerelda, so they made Esmerelda and especially Phoebus prejudiced a**holes while Quasi got a blonde airhead for a girlfriend. Or Pocahontas 2, it was only made to correct her love interest to who she married in reality. They literally shattered John Smith’s development from the original movie and made him an even bigger jerk than he was before to make him come off as this arrogant, immature jealous ex who doesn’t actually care about her feelings or people’s wellbeing, he only cares about himself and sees Pocahontas as a trophy wife instead of someone he deeply loves and cares about.

This movie doesn't even feel like a "Mulan" movie. There's literally LITTLE TO NO ANTAGONISTS PRESENT, I feel like the one and only time they made an appearance was to setup the emotional scene when Shang falls to his death (presumably) which was the biggest punch in the gut for me when I first watched it.

This movie could've been 'think about your differences' and 'wait longer to figure things out before getting married' there's the part where Mulans parents give her and Shang those yin and yang pendants cos even they see it might not work out after dating for only a month. It seems Mulan and Shang still would've had some disagreements and tensions would rise on the mission even without Mushu sabotaging, so let them break up and make up on their own.(after Mulan finds out what Mushu did, the conclusion she draws is that it wasn't her or Shang, it was him)Don't invent a reason for Mushu to interfere or at least have it be for a better reason. Maybe instead of losing his pedestal and trying to break them up, Mushu comes to the same conclusion the parents did(cos the sun and rain speech inspires the sabotage in the first place) and was only trying to prove Mulan and Shang won't work out but he thinks they shouldn't get married at all and waiting longer doesn't cross his mind. (So genuinely make his heart be in the right place instead of him just wanting to keep his job and disguising it as trying to help)

Here's an idea for a potential Mulan 2, but it may be considered a tad dull as it doesn't have as much action: The aftermath of the first film
    - Mulan: She's dealing with the the reactions of the people in her village, mostly the women, getting Li Shang's mother's blessing, and being a guide the princesses. Some are proud and happy with her bravery, while some are disgusted and wished she sticked to the status quo and that they fear she's a bad influence on the little girls who've been inspired for her
(Like Li Shang's mother). She's wondering what she's to do with her life while trying to win over Shang's mother so she can give her blessing on their relationship.
    - Shang: Dealing with the loss of his father, wanting to prove himself worthy of Mulan, and trying to adapt to a newer more peaceful life as he's spent a lot of time in war/training.
    - The Emperor (Mostly the 3 princesses): The emperor is trying to make new adjustments (little at a time he's still trying), and he wants his daughters to spend time in Mulan's village in order to o learn from her and reconnect with the people. After a certain amount of time they are to come home and report on what they've learned.. However he has Yao, Ling, and Chien Po as their guards (trusting them as Shang and Mulan put a good word for them). Of course they fall in love and are dealing with the impending dread of having to report to the emperor that his daughters have fallen for commoners as while he's becoming open to change, it's such a major one that he might not take too well.
    - Mushu: He now has his pedestal, but he still wants to be there for Mulan and is finding his life so boring. The ancestors want him to stay there as he already served his purpose and he can't meddle with the mortal realm too much. He's now questioning his purpose.

Honestly, Mushu didn’t seem out of character since he urged the ancestor with “c’mon” in the finale of the first movie before he got appointed as a guardian again, signaling his immaturity still isn’t fully gone. And the dynamic with the soldiers and the princesses were the best part of the movie. Too bad Mulan 3 was scrapped as the melodrama took up most of the 2nd movie, causing future plans to be scrapped.

  • @kristinahuchison2511

Interesting review. Personally I thought this one wasn’t that bad, especially if we’re judging this as a sequel and not against the original (considering how every single movie is subpar to their sequels with rare exceptions) I actually appreciated the attempt to make Mulan and Shang act more like a real couple when they get into disagreements and petty arguments. It shows they don’t know each other that well and are still working out the kinks in their relationship, but also shows couples aren’t always going to agree on everything, and they do apologize and make up! I also really adored the princesses and their struggles of honoring their royal duties to their country. Especially Ting Ting, she’s the oldest sister and has to keep reminding her sisters of their responsibilities as princesses, all while feeling the exact same pain of being a princess. I really loved their song I Wanna Be Like Other Girls, especially the pop version! And despite their relationships with the soldiers are rushed, I can’t help but adore them, especially Ting Ting and Ling because he feels like he’s being more annoying than anything and isn’t good enough for her. Only for her to eventually lose her composure and burst out laughing at his antics, especially when she puts the chopsticks in her nose. But I definitely agree with your idea of the princesses being forbidden to court soldiers or peasants, and the three having to prove their worth to the emperor, considering he knows they helped Mulan and Shang defeat Shun Yu.
Really, the only part I couldn’t stand was how much of a selfish jerk Mushu was. I get he originally had selfish motives in the first movie, but he comes clean about it. Here, he literally hates Shang completely and does everything he can to get them to argue. I actually found it hilarious that Mulan found all these mishaps charming and hilarious and joining Shang’s misery instead of being embarrassed.
For your voting poll, I vote for Brother Bear 2. It’s another sequel I actually kinda enjoyed and don’t get why everyone hates. Please tell me you plan to tackle Pocahontas 2 sometime in the future!

Heck, it literally says Vitani and Nuka were his cubs, Nuka is literally Scar 2.0 with how he acts, looks, and is treated, and especially having the exact same dilemma as his father, being envious of his brother. As a matter of fact, Kovu was supposed to be Scar’s own son, only reason they changed it was because of not having the issue of incest in a Disney movie (cousins marrying each other) when that’s literally how lions mate in reality.

I mean, there’s other movies that had actual sequels planned and got completely cancelled. Mulan was actually supposed to have 2 sequels which served as one giant plot, but unfortunately the budget cuts forced the writers to delete a lot of stuff. Atlantis was planned to have an actual sequel by the main studio, but because of the unfortunate performance they scrapped the series into one clunky movie. Same with Beauty and the Beast. There’s actually quite a few movies that were either planned for another movie or a series, while others like Pocahontas and Hunchback of Notre Dame suffered with bottom of the barrel art quality and writing which made their sequels the absolute worst for most people (can’t tell you how many videos I’ve seen of people bashing Hunchback 2, mainly because Quasi gets a girlfriend)

@@c0mpu73rguy Uh, Pocahontas 2 was a massive sh*tshow imo. The original movie was always one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I didn’t even realize the sequel existed until I was like 20 lol. Watching both movies, it is an entirely different story and I absolutely couldn’t stand how much the sequel changed so many things. Pocahontas herself for some dumb reason was remade to be a much more serious character that didn’t have ANY of the charm or curiosity that made her so enjoyable in the original movie. Instead she basically acted like the female version of Kocuom, and didn’t really care about learning more about English culture and stuff. John Smith was so out of character, its no wonder Mel Gibson didn’t reprise him (especially because he only appeared in the movie for like 10 minutes) And I just couldn’t get into the romance between Pocahontas and John Rolfe, it felt so forced and was honestly a slap in the face to the original romance with Pocahontas and John Smith who went through hell to be together, but couldn’t in the end unfortunately. But, another thing was the movie used a lot of Native American stereotypes in the first few minutes of the movie in Poca’s village, and it definitely didn’t help Poca herself was WHITEWASHED to appear lighter (even before the actual whitewashing scene) I could go on, but essentially Pocahontas 2 was such a headache for me to sit through, and I honestly almost fell asleep and was simply waiting for the end to see her and John Smith return to her land together. But no, can’t tell you how mad and disappointed I was she ended up going with Rolfe instead. If you liked the movie, fine, each to their own, but Pocahontas 2 remains to be one of my most hated movies

@@kristinahuchison2511 It tried to make the story more historically accurate for some reason by having Pocahontas go with John 2 (I mean Rolfe). Yeah, not the smartest choice considering how much these films already deviated from history by having Pocahontas be in her 20's instead of being 12 when she first met John 1 (I mean Smith).
And I don't know if we saw the same film but Pocahontas seemed pretty curious towards the english culture when she arrived in London (in a song, I hate songs, good idea, terrible execution).
I can defend individual ideas from this film like that, I can even defend the animation which was pretty decent considering the film Disney Toon made right before that one was Belle's Magical World... Another Disney sequel (midquel) I absolutely despise. Wait I lost my train of thought... Ah yes, I can defend individual stuff from this film but sadly not the film as a whole, it's still a bad movie.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 4 місяці тому +3

@@c0mpu73rguy I am well aware of the “historical accuracies” issue with Pocahontas. In fact, the movie was actually supposed to be much more accurate to the real account, or at least her relationship to John Smith. There’s literally a prototype art of him where he’s clearly an old man (say 40 or so) and his outfit is basically what Rolfe wears. For some funny reason I always believed his actual form was originally supposed to be for Phoebus, considering both are blonde captains that fall for dark skinned women, so Disney simply redesigned Phoebus. As a matter of fact, Kristoff was supposed to be in Tangled (just a different name and personality) but Disney chose to not do that and literally held hot guy meetings, hence how our beloved Flynn Rider was born lol. But the reason WHY Pocahontas became a romance movie instead was because of how much money the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin did, and all three couples are still super popular today. So Disney decided to take a huge risk and got greedy by making Poca and Smith lovers instead. The idea of an interracial love overcoming the hate between their peoples wasn’t necessarily a bad idea, its mainly the fact they used a real woman’s very sad and tragic story to tell it. Despite it was still a fairly big success and she became a Disney Princess as a result, it doesn’t change her movie got a lot of backlash and outright hate from both critics and Indigenous audiences. Which is understandable considering how much crap Indigenous people suffer even today, and there are very few movies about their culture that aren’t plastered with stereotypes. The only reason WHY Disney took such a drastic change in the story was because of critics literally shaming the movie for being graphically inaccurate and basically putting a very dangerous message in kids’ heads about Pocahontas’s story, especially because its one of the first historical events of American history (especially Virginian) I even remember reading somewhere about Disney planned to do a movie on the American Revolution (or one of the major battles) but it got canned because of Pocahontas’s performance.
So when the sequel came out, it ended up majorly p*ssing off the majority that didn’t give a crap about historical accuracy in a DISNEY movie, considering how many other stories sugarcoated the living crap out of their original stories (like Hunchback or especially Hercules) and the people that complained about the first movie hated the sequel just as much. So basically Disney ended up making an even bigger mess by trying to shut up the minority that complained, especially when authors normally give the audience what they want, NOT take advice from some trolls and haters.
I really believe if Disney had been thinking, if Pocahontas and John Smith had entirely different names and other plot details tweaked to make it blatantly obvious it wasn’t based on such an awful story, Pocahontas could’ve easily been the next big hit Disney anticipated (or at least beloved and not so scorned for historical accuracy)
Ok, yes we do see her very excited to finally be in London and stuff, but what I mean is after that song, she’s all business and once her mission is over, all she cared about was going home. The song itself felt like a huge knockoff of Belle, and its the only scene we see Pocahontas actually getting to explore London. I understand she’s there for an important mission, but she literally spent 4 months on a dang ship to get there and isn’t really interested anymore. That’s like going on vacation to Hawaii and having the VIP treatment all expenses paid but immediately hopping back on the plane after one day there. And no, the animation took a huge dunk in quality. Her people don’t even look like Native Americans (especially when you look at the designs from the first movie) and so do the English. Watch the opening of Pocahontas and you’ll see a much more realistic design of the English characters as they’re saying goodbye to the soldiers. In the sequel, they’re literally so cartoony looking. Even King James has a character design in the first movie, including a portrait Ratcliffe pokes a hole in, showing how much he dislikes his king. Anyways, even John Smith looks more “ugly” to make Rolfe look more handsome. He literally is trapped in this more mule and grey tone with his hair being more of a hotdog mustard color instead of the light gold color it had in the original movie. If I could post pictures I’d show you screenshots to prove what I mean

@@E3257.StudiosEverythingAwesome I will never get the hate for 'Mulan 2'. Yeah, it's not as good as the original, but it's still good in it's own right. I wish that Disney would stop their remake craze and make more sequels. I want 'Snow White And The Seven Dwarves 2', 'Pinocchio 2', 'Dumbo 2', 'The Aristocats 2', 'Robin Hood 2', 'Oliver And Company 2', a 3rd 'The Rescuers' movie and/or a 'The Rescuers' TV series, and 'Treasure Planet 2', damn it!

@@Optimegatrongodzilla I honestly liked it just fine alongside the original Mulan... I had no problems. But they seem to be experimenting. I actually really miss the Disney sequel era, unlike some. Haven't watched them all but I can't remember having seen any really bad ones. They were making "Dumbo 2" looooooong time ago if you didn't know, and it was sadly cancelled. There was never any information I could find on why but I was actually really disappointed. All the other ones you mentioned could have easily had sequels. They've long since proven they can make great sequels to their 80 year-old movies, lol!

Same. Its definitely not the best sequel, but its certainly not the worst either. Yeah some parts aren’t exactly thought through or kinda clash, but overall this one still has more good qualities that outweigh the bad. For one I actually appreciated the attempt to make Mulan and Shang act more realistic as a couple, specifically when they get into small disagreements or petty arguments. It shows how couples aren’t always going to agree on everything and that’s ok, and they do make up and apologize. Plus the side story with the princesses is so sweet and adorable, especially with Ling feeling he isn’t good enough for Ting Ting. Only part I couldn’t stand was how much of a selfish jerk Mushu was, yeah I get he was sorta that way in the first movie, but here he just flat out HATES Shang and tries everything to get them to break up.

Definitely not a fan of Mushu here where he stole the show the first time around and is still one of my top fave characters…aside from that it is fine
I agree if they changed the threat thing so there wasn’t so much weight or made the threat like in the first so they had a reason to fight and use their skills it could have worked…also Mushu not being a jerk but worried about being demoted and accidentally causing some comedic problems like he did on the first would be a much better angle and the ancestors being more supportive of him especially since all but the head ancestor got into the celebration at the end would work a lot better

As someone who is pro arrange marriage and anti marry for love I hate the fact this movie mispreesents arrange marriages. There is no arrange marriages in this movie, just forced marriages.
An arrange marriage is when a matchmaker puts people together and they have the option to say no, a forced marriage is when someone has no option but to get married.
I wish more western stories would know the difference and stop making seem like arrange marriages are terrible by default because it disrespects peolle who willing want to be in an arrange marriage and cultures where it is common.

Tbh, Mulan 2 was a massive disappointment. The first film was about her being this mighty warrior and even said at the end she would become legend. The second film should have carried on this principle as we see Mulan’s chi become even more powerful as she saves the empire once again.
Instead the writers ruined it for the sake of some cheap jokes and a half arse story that makes the characters laughable. Wholly disappointed tbh.

Beyond the fact that he’s not Eddie, Mark Moseley’s take on Mushu isn’t even that great anyway. He’s just doing a crappy Eddie Murphy impression, rather than being Mushu. He also lacks Eddie’s charisma and ability to sound soft and down to earth at the same time.
