    Honestly The Lion King 2 actually feels like it would have been good for a theatrical of course with a higher animation budget. For me, this is the best straight to video sequel and lives up to its predecessor, the songs are actually really good, it has a good message and has a really dark and engaging story.

      I’ve heard that it actually was released theatrically-outside the US, but still; I mean, Jungle Book 2 gets a theatrical release but not this? There’s no justice, I swear.

    On top of everything else from Lion Kong 2, surprised you didn’t mention the original planned death/suicide of Zira. Driven to madness and devotion, she decided she’d rather die on her own terms than be saved by Kiara and Simba’s pride. While I completely understand them pulling that out, it was more suiting for her character IMO

      @NightFangClash Рік тому +5

      Zira let go there at that part in that movie in more ways than one. It was already clear before that she has already lost her sanity long ago, but that deleted sequence just shows that nothing could've changed her and she was crazy to the end.

    The fight scene between Aladdin and Sa'Luk was originally animated with visible blood on Aladdin's arm after he gets stabbed (this is actually the reason they gave his outfit sleeves in this film) but it was edited out before the release because parents complained.
    If you look up the old trailers from the time, you can actually see the unedited shots that still included it.

    Ziras death was much more darker in the original version because instead of just falling to her death guess she actually lets go and offs herself rather then let her enemy save her and man u can still see her sinister smile as she falls...yet they add a scream to it.

      To me what made Lion king 2 still one of my personal faves in the disney direct to video line is when we do have Kovu learning the truth about scar and standing up to Zira saying he wants nothing more to do with him is a relatable moment when you start to see the truth behind a family members behaviour and actions and make it clear your not going to follow theme any longer but also after Zira death still having Kovu feeling some regret for not helping her is relatable when you know you wish you done something sooner but knowing it was going to happen sooner or later

    I won’t lie, I kinda wish we got that Atlantis series. As a film it was really bad, but as a series, it could have been pretty good.
    To think The Lion King II could have been even darker if they kept a certain cut sequence in… « No… Never… » (seriousely, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps)

    One thing I find weird is that Sarousch is played by Michael McKean of all people. He fits the role, but it’s so surreal to hear his voice. Sarousch is also one of McKean’s rare VOICE performances. I must say too, because McKean is known for his more comedic performances, Sarousch is one of Michael’s more nuanced preformances.

      To me Jungle book 2 has a pretty dark moment with Shanti when she went into the jungle to look for Mowgli and her having to face being chase by bats and other animals and her skirt getting rip by a branch shows you how fearful she was and also knowing her and Ranjan had to spend the night in the jungle after what happen with Kaa and having mangos the next day for breakfast

    Nice list, despite I don’t entirely agree with your picks. I would’ve added Lilo and Stitch 2 as it shows a lot of tension between Lilo and Stitch as he starts acting feral again due to his chemical balance (whatever you want to call it) becoming unstable, because he’s still an experiment, not a species. It even shows Nani’s struggles of being a surrogate mother to her sister and Stitch. Personally I don’t think Hunchback 2 should count. I get where you’re coming from of Madeline suffering from a long abusive relationship with her boss, but I feel Seruge doesn’t have enough character to show how narcissistic he truly is. At least Gaston had the entire town basically worshipping him and calling Belle crazy. I think part of it is Madeline doesn’t have any personality aside being a bit clumsy and quirky and having a hit of self hate because of how toxic Seruge is. I definitely agree with Lion King 2 taking the crown, and as a kid I actually liked it a lot more than the original. Tbh Zira in a way is more interesting and threatening than Scar because of how realistic she is. She becomes so obsessed with him and getting revenge she can’t think of anything else except killing Simba. The part Nuka dies is honestly sad because of how much he wanted to be accepted as her son and not seen as a paper soldier or worthless child, a sacrificial lamb if you will. This is literally the ONLY time Zira shows any love or compassion, otherwise his death just made her even more thirsty for violence and revenge.
    One I’m a little disappointed wasn’t mentioned was Pocahontas 2. Yes this one is undoubtedly one of the worst sequels, including “historical accuracy” But it does something literally no other Disney movie had tried yet: having a Disney Princess not ending up with her first love. I truly believe if the sequel had better written the relationship growth between Pocahontas and John Rolfe, more people would’ve been more understanding/accepting of her ending up with him instead of John Smith. And another thing is Governor Ratcliffe coming back as the villain again. He truly had a lot of potential to be a massive bigger threat in this movie because he has a personal connection with Pocahontas. She hates him because of his hateful views against her people and can’t do anything to change that (especially his delusions that her people have gold) but also the fact he’s the reason why John Smith was forced to leave her land in the first movie, including being told earlier he unfortunately succumbed to his wounds and passed away. I really wish this sequel would’ve focused more on the grieving process and how her new mission and all the challenges it includes (like being forced to be someone she isn’t) clash and make her mentally drained because she just lost someone she deeply cared about, but now has a difficult mission to convince a powerful ruler from a completely different world to not attack but instead make peace
    Also, Atlantis 2. I actually really love how you mentioned the potential this series had. Its a shame the movie wasn’t successful enough to keep it, especially since Kida became the first Disney “princess” to become a queen in her movie, NOT ELSA. It shows how Kida wants to understand further why her father made the choices he made, including keeping Atlantis hidden below the surface to prevent anyone from abusing the crystal’s power ever again. Only problem I had with this movie was the ending with Kida choosing to bring the island to the surface. It completely destroyed the point of why Milo and the crew vowed to never reveal Atlantis as being real and what consequences it would bring if certain people found out about the crystal’s immense power. It would’ve been interesting to have the setting take place before or during WW1, considering the time of the first movie, similar to Peter Pan 2 taking place during WW2. Speaking of which, I think Peter Pan 2 should’ve been added instead, considering it shows how depressed and frightened Jane is, especially when her father is drafted and Wendy tells her that she and Danny will be going on a train to the countryside until the war dies down. Jane believes her mother is being incredibly foolish and childish for encouraging Danny’s childish behavior and feeling like she (Jane) has to be the adult. She’s so scared about the war she screams at her brother and just wants her daddy back. Only to be taken to Neverland by accident and having to learn to capture her inner child in order to leave Neverland

    Ah yes, stoling a giant bell and capturing a kid is way more evil than KILLING a family in a mill, burning Esmeralda and the entire town.
    Joke aside, i don't think Hunchback 2 is dark. Yes Madeleine's past is sad but there's nothing scary happening; no murders. Sarouche menaced her but that's it! Compare to Frollo, this guy is not evil or interresting 🙁

    It would have been awesome to see a family guy reference at the end of cinderella 3 a twist in time with the time travel robbing of happily ever after plot being a simulation what if spell created by lady tremaine to find out how her unraveling cinderella's happily ever after would play out for her and Anastasia and Drizella self awarely like brian did mocking all a dream cliche and Lady tremaine arguing that it's better than the dark twisted original tale endings and cutting the black in mid sentence.

    Finally some appreciation for The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2! This movie is a lot better than it gets credit for imao. And, the use of a child as a hostage to negotiate yourself out of having to face the consequences of your very illegal and immoral actions? If that is not dark, I don't know what is. Seriously, Sarousch is an underrated villain. Sure, with Frollo from the first movie, he had big shoes and expectations to fill. What is more scary than a religious Judge who is anything but just, friendly and fair? Oh, a Circus performer and business owner who "earns" most of his salary through his stealthy underlings stealing from their public while the performers entrance them with tricks to hold their attention. All the while, he has no remorse, only admiration for himself for getting away with it, like only a grandiose narcissist can have. Simultaneously, he is gaslighting, and minimizing the other workers at the Circus. Upon later viewings, the urgent way Madellaine reacts to the physical threats towards Zephyr, makes you wonder what Sarousch might have done to her as a child... And this is kind of an unpopular opinion, but I think Madellaine is a better fit for Quasimodo than Esmeralda ever could be. Understanding what it is like to grow up groomed, gaslighted and isolated from the rest of the world from experience, and not just theoretically, puts them on more even ground.
