Citation V: turbulence during landing. Cockpit view!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- A visual approach and landing during turbulent conditions at Danbury's airport (KDXR). We could not use the runway 17 (into the wind) because of runway length limitations. This is a safe operation in the Citation V with a well trained pilot. ATC is recorded. Enjoy!
May God protect all pilots every day always and all passengers!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you!
Happy Landings,

Bad Turbulence 😭
Here we go again with god......it's pilot skill on top of engineered machines. No god....anywhere....ever
@Sema Duqa Hehe. Yeah, I knew that was coming....and then we say...."who made your god?"....and then you come back with a word salad and then we ask another question you dodge.....people have believed in thousands of gods throughout history, some of them have been discounted and we're getting nearer and nearer the truth. ;-)
@Sema Duqa My statements are not based on beliefs.
Look at those control inputs immediately before touchdown. Human beings are awesome.
+Mark Akins
Thank you!

Mark Akins God bless
I've seen one in a old 727 and it was off the charts...man it looked almost robotic I thought for sure no way they make it without a TOGO. Been looking for that vid for years now, can't find it.
Agreed. Great comment!
Last time I did this in C152 in a similar xwind, the instructor put "overcontrolling" in my record :)
That was really cool to see a landing from cockpit point of view especially during heavy cross winds. I have been watching as many landing, take off,and during turbulence videos as possible (and how pilots deal with it) to help overcome my long time fear of flying. I use to fly a lot as a kid and a few times thru my 20's but quit due to minor panic attacks. I'm now 44 and realizing I'm missing out on a lot in life if I'm not willing to fly and need to get over it ! I have a short flight planned for August 25th from Seatac to Oakland airport and back. Trying to prepare myself and by watching vids like this one really help. Thanks for sharing !
Hope you are able to stay calm and enjoy the flight! Have fun!
Thanks ! Much appreciated...leaving August 24th on Southwest from Seatac to Oakland then back in 4 days..Have not flown in years and am looking forward to it now !
Thank you!
Flying is one of the safest things you can do in life.
Happy Landings,

Happy Landings,

Just got back safely from my trip, Seatac to Oakland and back...Loved both flights. Smooth sailing, gorgeous breathtaking views. I was able to film take offs and landings. As previously mentioned, I was able to prepare myself mentally for flying by watching a lot of your videos, I did not flake out and leave the airport (due to my past phobia of flying) which is what I thought I would do at the last minute...Lol Anyway, I'm already planning another trip, this time to NYC. Thanks again for your amazing videos. You are an awesome pilot !
Unfortunately this is not an optical illusion, but an antenna just left of our final approach path... It is lit at night. We use it as a "glide slope" marker on night approaches. If you see the pole to the left at your level you are correct. Danbury is a challenging airport, but we all operate very safe here. Thanks for watching my videos, and I see that you do this in greatest detail! Best regards & happy landings, Guido
Well done .. we give it a 6 on the pucker scale ...maybe even a 7 ..
I am a flight simulator engineer and in charge of the citation simulators - this is the first time I've seen the real cockpit ... Identical as i expected - the visuals are much better in real life - nice work captain ... Happy flying
Thank you!
I do my sim training at CAE in Dallas. Level D sim. Very realistic.
I admire your work to keep these boxes going. Looks all very complex to me.

My brother is a pilot. It takes a special kind of person to do it. Much respect.
Thank you Jamie.
First and foremost a pilot needs passion for flying.

I'm not a pilot, but I've watched so many of your videos. And now I'm seriously considering pursuing a private pilot's license. Thanks for the great videos, Guido!
Have you done it?
@@Pereux0 No. Lol... I was in a position to do it when the economy wasn't in the trash, and now... I'm not so sure. Maybe in the future.
@@willphillipsmusic I have hope for you! I know you will do it eventually.
@@Pereux0 Thank you! I truly do plan to follow through. The timing is just not quite right yet. Soon!
Another graceful landing. Your first officer is very lucky to sit in the right seat. Great job Captain Warnecke!
Thank you very much, Robb.
I hope the First Officers sees it the same way... :-)

You're a real professional. Not sure if you've always been like this or if it's training, experience, etc. Very well done !
In German we say (very literally translated), "There is no master who fell from the sky" (= A master doesn't appear from nowhere). So do good pilots :-D.
It's always the formula: [excellent](cap)ability + [bunch of] theory + [hell of] training + [years of] experience.
Not only one of them or a bit.
Thank you William.
I have a simple principle: fly as you train and train as you fly.

Such a smooth landing in heavy turbulence!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you!
Passengers grade pilots on "smooth ;landings". I think it is more important that the landing is controlled and within all safety parameters, e.g. touch down in the touch down zone at the right speed.
If the landing is "smooth" it's often just luck. Also the design of the aircraft contributes to this. Some jets with trailing link gears almost always land like on butter. Others with a stiff landing gear like the C560 are more difficult. I had harder landings even if I thought I did everything right...
Happy Landings,
Capt. Guido

Wow! There were 2 sink rate audio warnings on that final. The captain flew that down to the runway markers & then flared.
Wow! That is still cool, 9 years later with 3.9 million views.
This is a special airport with special terrain challenges.
The EGPWS will give yo a sink rate warning as you are low over the terrain.
Several jets are based at the airport. It’s safe if the weather conditions are appropriate and the pilot is properly briefed and experienced.
A sink rate warning is nothing to be ignored or taken lightly.
I hope that clarifies some doubts you had with this flight.
Thanks for your comment and Happy Landings,

@@GuidoWarnecke Thank you. Appreciate your kind & detailed response.
I'm watching soo many cockpit videos and turbulence videos because on my way back to Orlando yesterday, there was soo much turbulence on my flight. It was soo bad that i set my body in a position that if we die today we're just going to die. I said my prayers and turned out I was stressing for nothing! It lasted for about 8 minutes until we found clean air. The pilot apologize and after that everything returned to normal. I'm still shaking about it until now. I've never experienced anything like that! You've also handled that plane like a champ! Makes me wonder how you pilots even do it!
***** Thank you!
In 99.9% of the cases turbulence is just uncomfortable and does not have any effect on flight safety.
The airplanes are designed to handle a lot of turbulence - much more than we human beings.
It is important to fasten your seat belt tight. I banged my head really hard on the ceiling.
Passengers not wearing seat belts have been injured in big airliners by being town to the ceiling and then smash into the seats. Often with broken legs and major injuries.
But it takes much more until an airplane breaks apart.
Flying is the safest thing we can do.
Thanks for watching my videos & happy landings,
Guido
Thank you Gudio for the reply. I really appricate it! :) I'll be sure to have my seatbelt on tight next time!

You are right: rudders and ailerons are connected to reduce adverse yaw during turn in the air.
When taxiing on the ground and pushing the rudders, it moves the ailerons.

Videos like this really help 😭 had a landing aborted recently and I'm all nervous about flying again
Naeday dont be they wont let you fly with inexperienced pilots they know what theyre doing. Always think that in the 1940’s planes were so much harder to control and those pilots could manage their landings very well :))

Gives me a lot of confidence to fly watching you land the plane so well despite seeing the steering wheel ( is that the correct definition ? ) move so erratically. I can also see the plane bouncing in the air. Amazing video.
Thank you.
These aircraft are quite unresponsive at low (approach) speeds. So a lot of control inputs are required to maintain the desired flight path.
Not as difficult as it looks like.
happy Landings,
Guido
flight controls or Yoke is the correct wording
As someone else said. Those control inputs on short final are beautiful.
Thank you, David.
The Citation V is not very responsive at low speeds. Flies like a cement truck.

What does "ignition off" mean? I know the engines are turbines and don't require ignition to run just fuel and air. Maybe it means you don't anticipate a restart that close to the runway therefore it wouldn't be needed. Just a guess. Always enjoy your vids.
You are correct!
Once the turbine is running, the flame is self sustained.
On a jet engine you switch continuous ignition on iduring critical phases of flight (take off / landing), in heavy turbulence and rain.
In case of a flame out, this would ensure (hopefully) a quick re-light.
The igniters fire at a lower rate per second during continuous ignition, compared to the ignition during engine start. This is to minimize wear on the igniters.
The correct wording for the ignition switch in the Citation V would be actually ignition "NORMAL", not "OFF".
In "normal", the ignition is off unless:
- the engine is started
- engine anti-ice is used
In the conditions prescribed above (take off / landing / heavy turbulence / rain) we would switch the ignition to "ON".
Thanks for your comment & happy landings,
Guido
Thank you for the response. I had flown in a Jet Ranger with my buddy on numerous occasions and asked a lot of questions so I knew the turbine was like a diesel engine and required no ignition to sustain running.
Getting ready for any anomaly is always good. Thanks again.
jbmbanter ALWAYS ask questions. In aviation there are no stupid questions.
It is a constant learning process.

Guido

Your are absolutely right, Luis well spotted!
KDXR is an airport that requires a lot of attention during approaches, especially at night.
Thanks for watching my videos in such great detail and
Happy landings,

Very nice landing, well done, guys! Note they get out of the turbulence as they descend just before they bank their turn. Turbulence is merely wind currents in the sky, the aircraft is MADE to handle it. Most pilots will skirt a storm with turbulence but there is such a thing as "clear-air turbulence" which cannot be seen. It sometimes causes up-drafts and down-drafts. You can feel that. (Some people call them air pockets but there is no such thing as a pocket in the air.) A down-draft can cause an airplane to drop, sometimes a few hundred feet, but with altitude, the pilot is trained to handle that and fly on! It's not fun when you are the pilot, I'm a GA pilot, and once hit a down-draft so severe it caused me to hit my head on the top of the cockpit and I was strapped in and it scared me, but so did a wind-shear once, that blew me away from the runway as I was almost touching down and I had to apply power and go around! That caused me a little bit of uneasiness! Many people in airliners get terribly concerned with a bumpy ride, but both the plane and the pilot can safely get through it, usually, with no adverse consequence.
You are correct. Small GA airplanes are more difficult to handle in turbulence than heavier jets.
Thanks for you comment and Happy Landings,
Guido

Very nicely done Guido! Showing off some impressive skills! What's your SOPs for a sinkrate warning then on short final in VMC?
For my company it's a mandatory go-around.
Thank you Alexander. KDXR was my home base, so we had to sail down a hill with a 6 degree path. That often triggers the GPWS. Normally I agree that this calls for an unstable approach and a go around. When you know the approach, it’s ok. Always captains landing there.

Guido

I'm a really anxious flyer, so it's great to see videos like these! Gives you a different perspective:) but I have a weird/random question: I thought you'd have to have perfect eyesight in order to be a pilot? :D
For the flight medical, only the "corrected" eyesight is important. So glasses are not a problem.
Color blindness is an issue however as many instruments work with color markings.

Hello, great video! I would love to fly the citations, if you could answer a few questions for me that would be great and really help.
What did you do to get to flying the king airs and citations? What jobs did you do before? And what license do you have?
Thank you very much in advanced!
Thank you!
I started flying commercially late in life, I am a mining engineer.
It is a long way up the ladder, you start flying smaller aircraft and then you have to do specific aircraft training (type rating).
Happy Landings,
Guido
All things considered with wind, I’d say it was a smooth landing. Great job Capt.!
Thank you Kristopher.
Although passengers like "smooth" landings and grade a pilot on that - it is more important that the landing is controlled, at the right speed and the touchdown occurs within the touch down zone. Also the landing rollout must be controlled at all times until the aircraft reaches a safe taxi speed. Sometimes it is required to touch down firm, for example in a very wet runway. This is called a "positive landing".
Nice word for a plonk down on the runway...
Happy Landings,
