I had the gastric sleeve many years ago and developed severe acid reflux to the point that I got diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus. PCP and GI doctor told me to just take PPIS and endoscopys for the rest of my life to check for cancer due to Barrett’s. Thanks to videos like yours I’ve realized that a revision to gastric bypass is a much better option than omeprazole all my life with endoscopys. Thank you for this very informative video.
I think it benefits the surgeons in both ways to do the sleeve because there is no complications to have the surgeons overworked and they know the patients will come back to have the revision to bypass so that way the insurance or the patient will pay again but if the patient chooses prescriptions drug then the surgeons will still benefit. If a patient is morbid obese, have health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, then why not have the bypass surgery done in the first place. 🤔 That’s exactly what I am going through now in 5 weeks and I heard some patients gets or develop ulcers few years after having the bypass surgery which something is not clear and is not explained why? Please don’t go for sleeve if you have the above sickness
I was going to do a sleeve gastrectomy but now I'm slowly leaning towards gastric bypass especially since I have GERD and he explained it pretty good now I am reconsidering my choice of surgery soon

Very informative. For folks with RA, the sleeve is better, but I didnt catch the reasoning behind that. Anyone know why the sleeve is better over the bypass for folks with RA?
Niko Jameson Paceley When a patient suffers from RA, you’re on a class of medications known as NSAIDS. These are very good medications which treat selling and inflammation. But a side effect is they may irritate gastric lining. In a bypass these meds are contra-indicated due to risk of developing a marginal ulcer.

I thought that I wanted to do the Sleeve Gastric, but this video made me change my mind. I have a lot of health issues; one concerning my gut (IBS with GERD). Also, pre diabetes (use to be type 2 but I changed it by consuming more of a healthy diet). This includes suffering with inflammation of fibromyalgia, (or arthritis) insomnia and depression as well as anxiety. In addition, I stopped eating red meat several years ago and gluten a few months ago due to my gut issues. I don't consume dairy ( it makes me lactose intolerance and constipated) and pork either. 😑

Dr. Del Pino, this video is 5 years old now. Do you still have the same opinions today on these two surgeries as you had 5 years ago? I'm a type 1 diabetic, with acid reflux and need to lose weight. Thank you.
Ok so you said that if you have diabetes and high blood pressure the bypass is for you, then you said the sleeve is better for people 400+ lbs. What if your both, then which one should you do?
There is another procedure called the Duodenal Switch that would be the best option. In patients who are heavy the sleeve has less complication than the gastric bypass. So you must balance between diabetes resolution and higher risk of complications with the RY gastric bypass
Appreciate the balanced explanation of both options and reaffirming if you have diabetes etc then the Gastric bypass is the better option. Very insightful and easy to follow you thank you.
