I was born in 2002 and grew up with Stewart little and my best friend in elementary school had a pet rat. I was absolutely primed for the tale of despereaux and ratatouille. We need a resurgence of mouse and rat lead media.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters, I thought it was pretty cute! Had no idea it flopped. I always just assumed it was a little one-off movie, cute and loved at the time and slowly faded to the back of the mind over the years. Glad it wasn't entirely forgotten!

I really like this movie too. I appreciate its earnestness, and I admire how it shows young kids that even likeable characters (Princess Pea, Roscuro, Miggery Sow) can do really bad things.
I'm pleasantly surprised to hear I'm not the only one who likes it. It's such a niche movie.

I read the book in elementary school and just remember a girl being in love with a rat who lived in the walls of her palace. Someone correct me if i’m wrong here 😭

i saw the movie in 5th grade after my class read the book. we talked about the differences between them and how differently we imagined the characters. that was about 8 years ago. i've completely forgot about it until now

Can’t blame you. There’s only a handful and sword fighting mice and how often do you really think about any of them lol

Oh, I 'memba! It felt like a weird fever dream. The vegetable guy made me think of that old Syd Barrett song "Vegetable Man." I had to stop myself from singing in the theater several times, "Vegetable Man, where are you?"

i distinctly remember renting this movie from either blockbuster or the library for a sleepover not too long after it came out. unfortunately, i wasn't a fan lol. i remember being weirded out by the beginning, particularly when desperaux was born (? i think? maybe that's just the only other thing i remember) and ESPECIALLY the weird, queen dying bit. like, it felt so sudden and jarring, and i didn't realize she was dead at first so i was like "????? what just happened?????" the weird tonal shift that i got from the movie then stuck with me, but basically nothing else did, other than desperaux being able to read, the rats being a separate and eviler society from the mice, and desperaux rescuing the princess (who was named Princess Pea (?) and played by emma watson) or something along those lines. nothing about a dungeon keeper, a daughter, or a chef and his vegetable bestie lol.
i'm glad you enjoyed it, of course! it's just funny to me that we had such different watching experiences and impressions. you're asking if anyone remembers it, whereas when i saw this i was about 8 or 9 and i think i didn't *want* to remember it afterwards. 😂I would be at recess and suddenly remember "THERE'S A *RAT* IN MY *SOUP!* AND I *ATE IT*" and the queen's weird grave that looked exactly like her and then I would get scared and unsettled by my own memory, so i'm fairly certain i tried to bury this one on purpose, lol.

I loved the book, but can't stand the movie. It's not a bad movie, just not even close to the book.
