  • Not sure how to get started trapping raccoons or coyotes? Josh can help.
    In this episode of Building Whitetails, Josh goes over two very popular, and very easy trap sets that let you target most animal. For his purposes, Josh is focused on trapping raccoons and coyotes.
    Raccoons and coyotes are both predators that take a toll on a wide variety of game animals, and sometimes even livestock. Part of any land management program should include a plan to keep predator and furbearer numbers in check, so as not to put too much pressure on game animals or nesting birds, especially ground nesters like turkeys, pheasants, and ducks.
    Join Josh on the trap line, and see how easy it is to bring balance to your property.

    we use a lot Dog proofs on our trapline. Great traps. We had a lot of success using Jeff Dunlaps Smokey fish DP bait the last 2 years on trails. Our channel is mainly a trapping channel. We trap in Indiana. I use various sizes of dirt holes for coyotes. Great video.

    Goodnight Irene 😂 very informative video. Thank you. I just bought a live trap like the one you demonstrated and I’m going to try it tonight with marshmallows. Raccoons and possums have been nosing around my chicken run. Hoping to catch them and NOT the skunk that I’ve also seen out there. 😳

    Why waste the wax dirt? It will crust over with that regular dirt on top with just the night frost. You'd be a lot better putting that little bit of wax dirt on the very top . That said in really cold weather your trap can still freeze down under the wax dirt next to the ground from ground moisture. I use peat moss under the pan and all wax dirt under the trap and over the trap. No weather conditions stop me in northwest Missouri.

    I ‘m curious as to how you feel a Bobcat is a predator? Where I live they are considered friends because they hunt the vermin like raccoons, rabbits, rodents ect. Thank you for any input. Oh we have hunters here but just deer

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 Рік тому

      They are a predator by definition.
      Exactly as you say, they hunt and eat animals and that makes them a predator.
      What kind of ridiculous world do you live in?

    • @dungeonmaster6292
      @dungeonmaster6292 Рік тому

      @@mikewhitman745 i took it that the OP meant to say "nuisance" instead of predator. And to that point: is it common for bobcats to hassle deer?

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 Рік тому

      @@dungeonmaster6292 you could be right but it's literally what they wrote so I can either assume they meant to say it or assume they don't understand what words mean. Honestly the second option just seems demeaning so I choose to believe he meant what he wrote, try to see the best in people.
      Umm, I believe they will hunt fawns when they can and probably hassle weak, injured or older adult deer. Not sure exactly why you asked though?

    • @dungeonmaster6292
      @dungeonmaster6292 Рік тому +1

      @@mikewhitman745 because it makes the OP's question sensible. He's asking "why would you kill a bobcat, they're friends because they control vermin" and the answer could have been "because they harass the deer population we're working so hard to nurture and encourage on our property" but that answer only makes sense of bobcats do indeed harass deer, hence my question

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 Рік тому

      @@dungeonmaster6292 gotcha, I don't even remember what happened in the video at this point and I don't feel like re watching right now honestly.
      Bobcat will also kill turkey and grouse while they are sitting on the nest.
      But mostly we have eliminated the apex predators that would help keep cast numbers in check. We have two options, let nature go unchecked and deal with diseased and starving animals or take responsibility for the lack of apex predators and adjust the population numbers according to what fish and game biologists say are sustainable and healthy populations.
      Give you a hint, going completely hands off the situation has been tried. Look into wildlife preservation vs conservation.

    Makes you wonder just how a trapper ever caught anything 100 years ago? I don't believe any animal can pull out an earth anchor that a trapper can not! Down hill from the set doesn't equate to "Down wind" of the set. A coyote's sense of smell is 400 times greater than ours and to be more effective you should consider the prevailing wind in the area you make a set! As too bedding a trap: no one has ever shown evidence of a coyote's reaction to a poorly placed trap on film. I think a proper evaluation would consist of the filming of at least 6 different areas and sets. One of the hundreds of experts out there would turn a dollar on UA-cam??
