This was really excellent!!! This is my first season and this is my target species. Lots of really great info for here. I appreciate the time, effort, and talent you put in. 👊🏻🤙🏻
I used to cover the pans with aluminum foil and set in shallow water. Those were basically dog-proof as well. Raccoons see shiny objects, and they have to investigate. A little tuna oil around the set helps.
FYI IT WILL CATCH CATS, I know a lot of folks don’t, but I have caught a few over the years and so have my friends. I lost 600 acres because of this. If you use bait that cats don’t like it’s very unlikely, but if you have a bunch of cats and you throw some meat-based, some sardines or two or something, you will have a cat the next day
I am new to this, but does your set lever have a notch, or is it a flat? I believe that there are 2 designs. One is a pull only trap, and the other is a push/pull design. A cat could easily get caught in a “push/pull” design trigger, but not likely in a pull only design. If there is a notch in the set lever, than I believe that trap will set whether the pressure comes from the top, or pulled from the bottom. I welcome all responses.
I had a trap get all the bait taken twice without springing the trap. Made a loose series of loops in some old none waxed dental floss. Got the floss dropped over the trigger and added the bait. Next morning had a really big rat. The thing was huge. Good riddance but surprising. It ws head first in the trap and caught behind the front legs.
The price of a raccoon pelt will NEVER get over $20 EVER again! These traps allow everybody to catch raccoons which were always very hard to hold in a flat trap, they'd fight a flat trap very hard. Now anybody with two brain cells can catch raccoons very easily. Raccoons that were once difficult to hold can now be caught in extreme weather with this technology of trap, and they seldom escape it... The poor raccoons have met there match and are now subject to be caught by every amateur, hobbyist, brain dead city folk everywhere! The price cannot recover to $40 per pelt ever again - it's just to easy to catch them! Also the opossum fur price will probably be non-existent as well.
Oh please, raccoons were never hard to catch or keep in coil spring or long spring traps. Doesn't take any more brain power to catch them with either. The reason for prices are down is due to people not wearing fur.
The poor raccoons are in higher numbers than they've ever been in the last 300-500 years in North America, probably ever. They wreak havoc on pheasant, grouse, duck, and turkey populations. The raccoon is doing just fine. Fur prices probably won't go higher because fewer people wear fur. But don't pretend that raccoons are the harmless Disney creature that modern culture wants you to think they are..
I’m glad to see someone else going at it.most ppl just complain on the internet instead of doing something
Cats will trigger DP's trust me.. thats why their called dog proofs and not cat proofs. lol

@@davetoms63 There is always an idiot.
Dumb to still kill animals for their fur in this day and age anyway.

The price of coon pelts plummeted long before dps hit the market
Shoot the animal quickly and the do your yapping, not the other way round.
