One of the most moving Anthems in the World,it tells of the struggle,of the time when every man had to commit to having no Country,no Government,no loyalty but Ireland,One Ireland! I will continue to sing The Soldier's Song/Amhrán na Bhfiann proudly, and see no reason for giving so much as a thought to the feigned offence of foreign bigots or despicable Irish revisionists who would like to pretend that the Easter Rising and the War of Independence - or Bloody Sunday, or the Gibraltar murders - never happened. Those things did happen, and too many of our forebears shed their blood to bring Ireland's enslavement as a prisoner nation to an end.
Let us salute them, and their sacrifice, and the debt of honour that we owe them.
It's a ballad for the people to sing. Most other anthems are symphonic and remote. It's a soldier's song. The country knew she would need future defense.
The French anthem says, the enemy “are coming straight into your arms to slit the throats of your sons and your comrades. To arms ... so that an impure blood may fill the furrows of our fields.” More or less. And no one speaks of doing away with that anthem. Come ooooon.
It's a beautiful national anthem, the lyrics are as relevant as ever and the suggestion it needs to be changed shouldn't be taken seriously.
I still think RTE should play it every night like it used to.
I think it would be a bit silly of them to do so nowadays...especially when there isn't need for dún síos or closedown.
I don't understand the argument that says 'It's time to change'. Why? What on earth's wrong with honoring the beginnings of a nation? I think Amhrán na bhFiann is a beautiful anthem which harks back to the formation of the Republic of Ireland and expresses how that occurred. When we (Australia) changed our anthem, it was simply to mark our own nationality rather than that of a remote one across the sea. Ireland has no need to change or try to expunge its history!
Sadly, I had no one to teach me the Irish language but I was proud to learn Amhrán na bhFiann.
The biggest problem with the song would be in a United Ireland
Changing it would be a slap in the face of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice back then. I don't think these eejits realize that a national anthem is more than just a song.
There are people who struggled through incredibly oppressive times to buy your freedom to have an opinion. Do not disrespect them!
I remember the last presidential election campaign: Higgins, Dana, etc. all said they'd change it , given the choice. The only candidate who said it should remain was McGuinness.
The anthem tells a story of the Irish people's struggle for their freedom. I don't see why this anthem is controversial.

As a Yank, I must say this is a most beautiful song, in Gaeilge as well as in English. It should never be changed. We here in the US have the same type of POLITICALLY CORRECT clowns that constantly try to get the Star Spangled Banner removed as our anthem....FOR THE SAME REASONS...it is too "warlike"; it calls our allies (the Brits) bad names; "our society is different now!" Hold on to it tight. Do not let them take it away!!!!!
As a fellow Yank, I have to say I prefer America the Beautiful as a national anthem, as I feel the Star Spangled Banner is more about the flag of the US than the actual country. That being said, I don't think we should lose it as an anthem, just feel like it's not a great representation of the US. Once again, I'm not against it for being "too warlike," just that if you sit and listen, its about the flag, not the country.
Amhrán Na bhFiann is actually one of my favorite national anthems to listen to. In the traditional Gaelic though.

Eh, I've long been of the opinion that The Star Spangled Banner (especially ew) and America the Beautiful are largely obnoxiously jingoistic religious proselytizing utterly banal propaganda and that This Land is your Land would be a much more egalitarian and representative pick for the National anthem. I think that it much better captures the best things about America in both it's physical beauty/actuality and the general spirit and collective consciousness of it as a nation of vastly different people united by a shared country. That said, I don't have anything against people that like the other two and feel passionately about singing them as anthems to show pride in and/or love for America as they see fit. I almost wish they would recognize all three officially and let people use them all interchangeably or consecutively as they wish, to each their own and all that!

As a Jackeen Gaeltoir who left the country in 1962 I still love to hear the anthem sung with volume and pride. However as a former Clann Na Publochta supporter I still think the first line should be changed to "Sinne Laochra Fail". Le gunnai ag screach fe laic na bpileir seo dhig cannaig ........... I don't see any logical reason to change the anthem if most Irish people like it, in order not to (supposedly) offend some of British origin. In the English version they speak of "the Saxon foe", but not in Irish (as far as I understand), and it's the history of Ireland.

Our national anthem is steeped in history, its original English lyrics written by Peadar Kearney (uncle of Brendan Behan) in a café on O'Connell Street, and sang aloud on that same street from the GPO, held by the rebels on Easter Monday 1916. However, I imagine he feels it appropriate to erase the struggles and sacrifices of people like Tone, Emmet, Davis, Mitchell, O'Donovan Rossa, Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, Mac Donagh and Mac Diarmada. Fine! Have Denise Chaila or some other token import write a new anthem but I for one, won't be singing it!

I don't get the point about how you can easily transition from Amhran na bhFiann to "Pomp and Circumstances"/"Land of Hope and Glory". "Land of Hope and Glory" is an infinitely better anthem than "God Save the Queen"

I see that there are again calls to change the Anthem and I disagree - the tune is now Ireland, nothing else will do. Ireland's Call is an example of what could be the result of change... pleasant enough, but uninspiring, particularly the the tune.
If there is a problem with Liam Ó Rinn's Irish translation, be it because it is in a Dubliner's version of the Munster dialect, or because people just don't understand it, then fall back to Peadar Kearney's original - which was in English. This was the version known to the men of 1916, not Ó Rinns translation.
I was taught the full Kearney version (verses and chorus), but also learned the chorus in Irish which became the anthem, due to a "purist" view that the anthem must be in Irish.... even a somewhat clumsy translation. If this is still the view, then try re-translating the original into standard Irish.... or (ducks!) sing the original in English.
Even try, as the Germans did, to amend the words to make them "less divisive". Personally, I don't think this should be done as the words reflect the struggle for self determination... they don't name names. But I'd be happy to see someone from the North contribute.
But, for God's sake.... no new "politically correct" song.
I wouldn't say it's clumsy, but it is translated into Munster Irish which contains forms not found in the other dialects or the 'standard' which is taught in schools.

M national anthem, the Star Spangled banner, dates back to the Revolutionary war of the 18th century. It's virtually impossible to sing. The French national anthem La Marseillaise engrandises a time of war and death. Maybe we should all be taking a long look at what these songs are actually promoting. As for my country. I would like to see the banner scrapped for America the Beautiful
Nancy Benefiel every national anthem is a song that people adopted as thair own. Our national anthem comes from a drama made in 1800's, but it became so populat, so it was addopted as national anthem. I think no anthem can be adopted unless people want it. And ofc for me its the most beautifull one :)
