It took me about four weeks to learn how to sing Amhrán na bhFiann with a Mayo Accent... I sing it loud and proud wherever and whenever I can. I am so proud to be Irish.... what's funny because I am german.

I recall a family friend, Gone now and sorely missed, Paddy Carroll, a soldier of 1916-22. I recall his trials and travails, and will think of him when I hear the Anthem again. You got me all " misty" with this piece, thank you, as I will spend the evening in fond memory of Paddy Carroll of Co. Leitrim. RIP Paddy, and eternal thanks for your sacrifice.

Haha I love how when you speak Irish the captions say [Music] when all you're saying is 'welcome to the channel'🤣PROOF that Irish is as beautiful as music, even UA-cam admits it! 😉 Also: you have a lovely sweet voice. I'd listen to that!
I like the line 'some have come from a land beyond the wave' - as a French girl across the sea I feel included - like I can love Ireland even if I'm separated from her.

    The National Anthem
    From Department of the Taoiseach
The national anthem, called ‘The Soldier's Song’/‘Amhrán na bhFiann’, was written by Peadar Kearney either early in 1910 or late in 1909 (according to an affidavit signed by him in 1926).
The music, by Patrick Heeney, is understood to have been composed around the same time. The original English text of ‘The Soldier’s Song’ was first published in Bulmer Hobson’s Irish Freedom newspaper in 1912. ‘The Soldier's Song’ was not widely known until it was sung at the GPO during the Easter Rising of 1916.
Liam Ring (Ó Rinn) was responsible for its first translation into Irish in late 1916 and it was published in the Army magazine, An tÓglach, on 3 November, 1923. On 12 July, 1926, the executive council of the Irish Free State decided to adopt the music of ‘The Soldier's Song’/‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ as the official national anthem.
All three men responsible for the national anthem, Peadar Kearney, Patrick Heeney and Liam Ring (Ó Rinn), were from Dublin’s north inner city and lived within 200 yards of each other.

my Granny came from a village called Ballure It is on the road to Kilkelly not too far from the border with Roscomain. I knew the Gallagher's of Forde's pub in kiltimagh. Vera, Tommy, and Lil Forde ran the pub. Jimmy Gallagher and Tommy were both of the Mayo regiment As far as my Granny's family went her father was Tommy Cannon married to Bridget Gallagher. Both the Cannons and Gallagher's were related to the Carroll's do to a double marriage. My Granny, MaryAnne Cannon had a maternal grandmother named Mariah Carroll. Mariah would have spoken Gaelga as her first language. Not sure how long Donegal clans have been in Mayo. It may have had something to do with the forced migrations to Mayo during the Cromwellian invasion.
