Jane H …. It doesn’t matter how many times I watch Elvis performing this, I still love it as much as I did the first time I ever watched it. You are right about Elvis …. He grew up in a poor Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi, from a young child until he was 13 or 14, when his poor parents moved to Memphis for better job opportunities. So as a child, Elvis was very much a part of that Black community, & that is where his love of Gospel was born, & the three Grammy Awards Elvis won, were for his three Gospel Albums. In a time of strict segregation in the South, Elvis continued to spend time with Black friends & singers, such as BB King & Little Richard. Throughout his life, Elvis had a number of very close Black friends …Sami Davis Jnr, James Brown, & Muhammed Ali to name a few. Elvis’ professional singing career began in 1954 when he was 19, & by age 21, he had become the First global Superstar. Elvis was actually the first performer to be signed up for a Residency in the brand new International Hotel in Las Vegas, where he did two concerts a night in the opulent Showroom, seven days a week, for a month without a break, twice a year, from 1970 right up until his death in 1977.

Elvis literally invented the Vegas residency model at the International Hotel which was built in 1969 and the owner signed Elvis to perform in their new showroom/arena. Elvis held the world attendance record in Vegas and was presented with a gold World Record belt by the hotel owner.

Yes, Elvis did grow up surrounded by black people and even attended a black church (remember that this was during the time of segregation in the South). When people accuse him of "stealing" black music, it is because they don't know his background. That was the music of his youth, the music he most loved, and the music that influenced everything he did. Rather than criticizing him, people should realize that he was a pioneer in music for recognizing and celebrating black music because he genuinely loved it and saw its brilliance at a time when that wasn't a popular position.

I am super surprised you are not aware that Elvis hit the scene in 1956 and immediately became a world hit after Heartbreak Hotel. He was the first performer to bring Rock and Roll into mainstream. He was only 21 at that time. His classics Blue Suede Shoes and Don’t Be Cruel and on and on.
He is in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest selling solo artist of all time estimated 1-1.5 billion recordings sold. Still today he holds records unequalled.
Loved your joy and your comments and a pleasure to watch you. Will like and subscribe … but come on man … bone up on his history please. Like John Lennon said “Before Elvis there was nothing” and Celine “Without Elvis none of us would be here in Las Vegas” and he only had essentially a 21 year career but is as popular as ever. His voice instantly recognizable.
Merry Christmas 🎄 and God Bless ♥️

If you pay attention, Elvis keeps looking back at his drummer, and he and the drummer basically start a duel of sorts with the drummer picking up the beat while Elvis acts out the beat with his movements.

Elvis was hired to open and have a residency at what would be the largest showroom in Las Vegas, at the brand new International Hotel. He opted to let Barbara Streisand open to work out any sound issues. But when he started he played two shows a night, seven days a week for a month at a time and smashed all Las Vegas Attendance records, the following year he played two separate months and smashed his own attendance records, aside from national tours, he played Vegas yearly from 1969 until 1976 and was supposed to return in 1977. Shove it up your nose, was just a little word play, Elvis playing around on stage. Elvis started recording like 1954 and was active until his death in 1977 at the age of 42.

Elvis was 35 here. He liked to play, joke and mess with song lyrics. He also conducted the band with body movements. In this performance he is moving along with the drummer. He definitely gave his audience their monies worth. Elvis started appearing in the 50's. Check out Elvis singing -"Hound Dog "( video on Ed Sullivan Show / circa 1957)

True talent without audio tune without technology just pure raw talent. This man was a musical genius. Merry Christmas and God bless you. Elvis had 6 to 8 week runs in Vegas, where he lived on the penthouse of the hotel. Unfortunately, Elvis was unaware that his manager controlled. His business decisions was an illegal alien, and therefore, every time Elvis made the attempt to do a world tour. Something always stopped it. Wasn’t until after many years and towards the end of Elvis‘s life that it was found that his manager was illegal, and therefore stopped all his chances of ever going international which he wanted to do so badly. Sad but true.

Elvis at 35 years old. This was his return to live performing after his Hollywood movie contract expired. He was the highest paid actor in the world in the 1960s but was only allowed to produce soundtracks for his movies. The Vegas shows were at the hotel international which built the soundstage for his residency. 850 consecutive sold out shows. wild midnight shows. He helped make Las Vegas what it is today. An international city, people came to Vegas from all over the world to see him or try to. When Elvis was in town it was like Superbowl week for two months out of the year. The 1950s were rock and roll Elvis. the 60s were movie star Elvis and the 70s were Las Vegas rock, blues, gospel revival show Elvis. Check out Lawdy Miss Clawdy from the 68 comeback special or white suite dapper Elvis singing if I can Dream which was a tribute to MLK jr after his passing,

Elvis once said "God made only two mistakes with me "He didn't make me a bass singer and He didn't make me Black." He adlibbed "shove it up your nose" and it was meant to be funny, no meaning behind it. He was a very funny man and adlibbed some really hilarious quips. He was one of the first, if not actually the first to have Black backup singers from 1968 during the height of the civil rights movement to the end of his life. If you want to hear him change the words to another song, then listen to Are You Lonesome Tonight, laughing version.

  • @theapavlou3030

1969 & 70 was the start of Elvis's third act, of his career. He was fkn incredible start to finish. From 50s babyfaced Elvis, to sleek sex God 1968 Elvis is black leather, to mature 70s groovemaster and gospel preacher... the evolution of Elvis is an amazing thing. He was a star in every way and a good natured human being.
Poverty knows no colour, but make no mistake, Elvis was a black man. Darlene Love said, black people could see the difference between Elvis and other white artists. Elvis achieved a lot of firsts, unrecognised and unrewarded at the time.
    He should've lived longer.
BTW I rewind back to the same spot everytime, feet apart and thrusting starts lol.
Elvis's moves are actually conducting the band. And if you notice he positioned the drummer, Ronnie Tutt, in the front and centre because he fed off him and conducted him with his dances. Ronnie said it was like playing for a stripper, you never knew what Elvis was gonna do next. That band was comprised of the very best musicians auditioned by Elvis. He actively sought out the Sweet Inspirations (in 1969, included Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother) because he loved them when they backed up Aretha Franklin on stage.

I've listened really closely to that "shove it up your nose" several times. I know Elvis liked to joke around on stage but, after doing some close listening, I'm pretty much convinced that the line was somehow dubbed into this video. The end of the word "nose" is crammed in there so tightly that there's no space for him to have taken the breath needed to sing the next phrase as cleanly and strongly as he does. So I don't think he actually voiced those words in the live performance.

Almost everyone from this present time period hear the line "shove it up your nose" they think he is talking about cocaine. It's just a joke, him being silly because it rhymed with the word "know". There was a saying back then "Up your nose with a rubber hose". In fact, I don't think "coke" as far as I remember, was much of a big thing back in the late 60's early 70's. Yes it was around, but far as popular "hard drugs" it would be LSD, heroine, "yellowjackets" & so on.

  • @lmsossi6501

"Shove it up your nose" is a way of telling someone to stuff it, shut up, mind their own business, etc. It was not in the actual lyrics. Elvis was very playful and would frequently ad lib lyrics to be funny. That was just an instance of him injecting his sense of humor into his performance.

Elvis never had a World tour. His Manager Colonel Parker wouldn’t let him do because Parker was an undocumented immigrant. He came here illegally, and he knew if he came back into this country or tried he would not be able to come back in so his manager robbed him of that dream and opportunity ever never came on Johnny Carson or anything in Vegas I guess it was a residency. He had a seven year contractfrom 1970 to 1977. He toured the country. He did come to Canada, but that was it. He never got to go to Japan or England, where he even spoke in the interview that he would love to do.
