This is the first time I've begun to understand something about camera modes ! Thank you for explaining in simple terms. Trying to understand complicated explanations from an expert is frustrating for the non-technical amateur. If I lived in Australia I would happily sign up for a one-day course ! I'm a complete novice with a new camera Nikon Coolpix P900 and found this very helpful thank you. Could you tell me the best setting for taking pics of birds please?
For bird photos try Shutter Priority mode (S) on the camera dial. This will allow you to dial in a faster shutter speed and the camera will look after the aperture for you. You may also want to consider using auto ISO if you are less familiar with how it works.
This was greatly appreciated!!! Just got a new camera, not quite a DSLR but kind of a hybrid between a DSLR & Point & Shoot. I'm ALWAYS wanting to improve my skills and having this feature helps me get closer to taking professional photos. This is going to help me with my motorsports photography. One of the most detailed videos I've seen.
It is August 8, 2019 and I just got a Coolpix 500 Nikon. It doesn't have the M etc, but I've learned a bit about why my focus isn't doing what I want. I need to be in MANUAL and I've just put my camera into manual. Thank you.....and wish I DID live or at least was visiting Australia!
Hi Vicina, I'm not familiar with the s9900 but would suggest checking the manual to see if the camera allows or has exposure correction when using the video mode. If so you should just be able to increase the exposure compensation for a brighter video. Hope it works for you.
According to the manual, there is a short movie clip mode where you can shoot and combine very short videos. It seems that there is some exposure control if you use this mode; however with the regular movie mode, there is no way to change the exposure.
Fantastic video . Just getting to grips with photography and this helped me no end . A good detailed video with super clear instructions and not rushed . Really helpful . Thank you and a big thumbs up
This video is fantastic! you'd be surprised how many people ignore this basic lesson. I'd come visit you in Brisbane but that airfare from New York City is prohibitive.
Hi Carl, This will depend on the camera, I'm more familiar with still photography than video. But I can tell you that with my Canon 80D (which I use to record all my videos) I use it in the manual mode for studio work but used it in the Tv (S) mode when I was recently on location.
So, if I want a quick shutter speed at a sports event or something, the light entering the lens will be cut down according to the F/stop number. So does that mean a good way to combat the loss of lighting is to open the aperture more?
Just to clarify - shutter speed and aperture (f number) are two very different ways of controlling light. If you choose a fast shutter speed for a sports event you let less light into the camera (because the shutter opens and closes so quickly) buy you would then ideally choose a larger aperture (small f number) to allow as much light down the lens as possible. Also don't forget ISO, if the light isn't good increase the ISO as well. Hope that helps 😀
If i increase my shutter speed to take a picture of a moving object, do I have to increase the aperture to let in more light to compensate for the quick shutter speed?
Hi Joseph, You are correct, if you increase your shutter speed you will almost certainly need to increase the aperture, BUT do make sure you are selecting a low f number which is a larger aperture (yep, I know it's confusing). If you pics look a bit dark after that you may need to bump the ISO a little as well. Let us know how you get on and please consider subscribing for more videos and tutorials. Paul @ Photo genius.
In Panasonic GX8, under Manual Mode, there is an additional option of choosing M, P, S, A. How does this differ from simply choosing P, S and A in the Mode dial instead?
Hi Kareem, the only thing stopping me from making a video about the P900 is that I don't own one! I've had lots of requests so if I can get one then I will certainly make a video or two.

I don't really know what i adjust when i scroll on the buttons. I saw your video with that display you are using, where it shows when you adjust the aperture, the lens open and close, but i can't find that. Why not? Do i not have the newest software, do i have to download something from the pc to the camera or something? Another things is that my pictures aren't that sharp that i want them to be. Can i adjust something on the camera, so my pictures get sharp. Also when i focus the pictures aren't that sharp that i want them to. What settings, modes do people recommend for beginners. I don't want to go in auto or no-flash mode. But to get a understanding of the iso, aperture and shutter speed in practice, what do people recommend? I am from Denmark so my english are not that good, write if i have to explain something a little bit better.
I have a free tip sheet that you can download that may help you, here's the link : photogenius.com.au/learnphotography On the d7000 it's really easy to change the settings. You have a 'wheel' on the front of the camera and one on the back, in the Manual mode the front wheel will change the aperture value and the rear wheel you can use to change the shutter speed. If you images are not sharp then it could be focusing or your shutter speed is to slow. Keep watching the videos and practising! Thanks for the support.

Nicely explained bro but please make a detailed video on Nikon Coolpix B700 thanks in advance.
I'm just getting into wildlife photography, I have a Nikon COOLPIX s9700. I have no clue what that name means haha. I'm having trouble with my photos not focusing even when I'm barley zooming in and I can't figure out why. The camera is so specific I can't find much about it online, if you have any advice I'd greatly appreciate it. :)
Hi mate👋 I have a Nikon model coolpix p530 and when I take a photo without flash is a little bit shaken (but the camera is absolutely stable). When I turn on the flash, the image is very clear and stable. What I have to do?
Great presentation. Helped me lots. Thanks u !!

If you come to Brisbane you are very welcome to join one of our photography courses. For more info visit our website : www.photogenius.com.au 👍
So how do you operate the tripod? Can't figure it out. P900
Sir what is the best mode for photography?
+Jules Baldon Depends on what you are doing, I like to see people using the Manual mode because then you have to think about Aperture, Shutter and ISO (the exposure triangle), sure it's a bit more work but is the best way to learn how to get more from the camera. Thank you for watching. Paul @ Photo Genius. 👍😊

I'm camera stupid. I've had a Nikon coolpix 120 for 5 yrs, love it. Never learned anything about settings but have taken amazing pics. I've outgrown it and have as of today received my Nikon p900 coolpix, it's a beast and I'm excited. I am going to take the time to learn settings because I am ready to up my photo skills. Loved your video and sure wish I was closer, besides I want to see Australia. Would sure like to know if you can teach me more. Do u have email contact?
The Nikon P900 is a cool camera and has a massive zoom lens, I've seen some great photos of the moon taken with it. Please consider subscribing as there are more videos coming, thanks for posting.
