The key word in this entire video is the TUNE. I'll repeat...
The TUNE!
pdeuce2985 haha I did have one of the best tuners tune it on the west coast. Also quality parts I would say and driving habits.
Blue STI absolutely man. Mine is stock with Cobb stage 1. For now....
Blue STI where did you get tuned at ? Yimi sport snail performance?
Snailperformance? Near Auburn
@@TheMrFlyBoy18 When you casually do pulls here n there, it'll last. Track it multiple days, boom.
If there’s no issues then your tuner did a good job tuning it 👍
Ya hes one of the best we have in Norcal
This car is blown up by now
Let me guess. Bains tuning?
I thought that "knock on the wood" can only be found in my country. Mind blown.
Refreshing to here bro. I have a 18 Sti along with a 07 wrx with over 211k. Original block and turbo, with some mods still running strong. True the key is to not drive like a jack a$&.👍🏾
FYI you dont need to drive like a jackass to blow a ej 257 Engine or Another of the other Subaru Engines either. Use google and se how many jackasses there are according to you. Wrx Engines are a whole other thing, they are reliable compared to STI´s.
Mattias Andersson trust me I see your side. I’ve worked with these cars daily for over 9 years. Maintenance and driving style play a huge roll in reliability. No matter if there bone stock or modified.
Mac Sti and I have owned one STI of each generation since 2002, and are now On my fifth. You have right, drivingstyle can make a huge difference in of the engine shall survive or not. But there are many cases there The ej 257 has broken, even without it has be driven bad. Both my Engines broken during the brake in time, With others words i drove carfully and followed the brake in procedure, but they broke anyway. One with ringland failure and one with a spun bearing. I got both times a New engine On The warranty without problem.. Subaru has kind of approved that they have Made a less reliable engine With The fact that they never refuse to get it on warranty.
Every engine blows bruh lol
This video put me at ease and made me wanna go fbo e85 with a bigger turbo lol . I have a 19 with 20k idk when ima start modding tho
Great video. Subies forever. I really enjoy watching these videos and the modifications everyone does. I have a base model WRX and im not ever modifying it. My next car will be the new STI if I like it. Stay safe brother 🙏.
Wrx are awesome to man. Good best to leave stock. Thanks for watching
@@BlueSTI No worries. I always watch. My 2017 base model i purchased in 2018 out here @irvine carfax out here in Ca. I hope the new,WRX and STI are good looking and fuel efficient. I hope subaru doesn't screw up the body style. Subies forever.
@@paulmarsdensr1095 ya I know man I'm hoping they're a good increase in power and look like the concept car
looking to do something similar with my bug eye, but im just aiming the 350 mark. going frount mount, intake. headers/up pipe/turbo back, bov, injectors and fuel pump
Subway Gaming Wouldnt need a fmic for that but it helps. Also ethanol blend if better for keeping knock down but please change the oil much more often than normal if rinning an ethanol blend. Lile every 2500 miles often lol
Sounds like a $10,000 investment
Imagine a single popsicle stick laid across two pieces of bricks. Now, as best as you can, and as many times as you can, try setting a 5lb weight on the popsicle stick by either softly laying or dropping it and see what happens. It may hold now, but in the long run, it will break. Now lay a 2x4 on the same pair of bricks. You get a different story. Any structure is only as strong as its foundation. However, any structure, no matter how sound, that takes any abuse well over its threshold, will fail.
You got a great combination of parts and alot of power on the stock engine. Don't get too confident, but take care of it well.
I know plenty of 400+ who guys on stock blocks without any issues. its all in the tune and maintenance. all EJs don't blow up.
DeeJaySirWill Sure, but over time. Seals will leak, rings will wear, and you keep dumping all that boost into that motor which isnt designed to handle in stock form. Something WILL give. Nothing lasts forever. A built engine with the strongest pistons won't last forever. I work on jet engines. They don't last forever.
true but any EJ that is driven hard going at least 60k is a win Imo. lol
OCTurboJoe Some guys put a larger turbo on and run lower boost to make the same peak hp but higher in the rpm range for less time. The result is more reliability as the lower boost is easier on the pistons and moving the power curve higher up puts less strain on rotating components. Still wouldnt go over 340hp/tq on a stock Ej block lol. Just a waiting game at that point...
@@mrpsd590 Don't be That Guy. great nickname.
I popped my 2015 sti motor 10k miles after the tune. Some are lucky, some are not. I was conservative too... 300 whp only, and a very reputable tuner.
dragonlee1000 dam sorry. Sucks can happen anytime
rvidal0001 Sorry to hear that man... I miss the rumble from my boxer so much. I had a single exit titanium exhaust catless. It was awesome, but I plan on going iag stage 2 block next. Hopefully it will hold up better.
rvidal0001 Let me know how it works out for you. Are you on Mass Subaru or any other subie groups on Facebook?
rvidal0001 Ok man I will try to friend you. I subbed to your channel
@rvidal0001 hows it holding up?
What’s the 0-60 time and how much did the build cost ?
How many miles did you have it build before sold ? Any issues ?
Sometimes.... EVERY TIME....
Cold start isn’t cold.... until you see -25° on thermometer and you decide to give it second, (like a diesel, wish there were glow plugs)... pray that it starts than trying to crank it
Can you do a pov drive with just car sounds? Can you hear your turbo spools?
I have a video of doing a drive by but with the EWG you don't hear the spool anymore lol cause it's so loud
What blend are you running with the flex fuel? I’m in same boat as you except no E. Likely will end up on E. Most people running into issues aren’t the spirited drivers and more so track squad/ donut crew
-Slurmdaddy - e70-75 is what my ethanol content says usually.
Ah wow, no wonder it is 450 haha. Think I’m gonna stay around e30 e50
-Slurmdaddy - ya E85 is awesome once I get my motor built I'll be able to push it to 550WHP with this turbo and the setup I have on E85.
non subaru owner/ ricers: it will last till 500k miles.
real subaru owners: couple of months before the rod bearing or piston goes.

Update on how the stock block is holding up?
It was doing great but I traded it in for a Tacoma
Awesome man!!! So many haters lol!
Nice car, is it still running fine on stock internals? I'm thinking of doing 400whp on my 19 sti. I'm thinking of taking it to yimi sport tuning.
Still runs great. At 57k miles now and insane fast for the street
That's awesome! Good to hear; you have a top mount intercooler?
@@jandroredjunebrlue8574 no I have a Cobb fmic now. Way better than a tmic
Pushing that kind of power on a stock block, I don't think the question is "IF?" but "WHEN?"
Same motor can handle that kind of power for thousands of miles while another motor will blow sooner.
I know this video is over 3 years old, would love to hear an update. Did it blow? Is it still going strong? If so, how many miles?
Never blew the motor but got bored with it and knowing a 13-15k motor build was needed soon wasn't something I wanted to do so I traded it in for a new Tacoma.
I wouldn’t say anything I can think of. There is a lot more you could do. I see no headwork in this build description lol. Also, the intake may be 3” but it necks down to 2.5 to 2.75 under the intake manifold. Not an issue with this power level.
aSUBIEnamedSTELLA it's still the stock block. Ya I'd like to do the heads once I get it built
I went through two brand new motors with minor bolt ons and was at 305 whp. So Im gonna day No. however, it’s a hit or miss
Dog dog true it’s just matter of time
You must forge the motor to be reliable
Why these guys don’t get it
It’s hit and miss
Did you service it every 5000kms?
@blue Sti, I'm looking to achieve 450whp on my 18STI on a stock block. How is your stock block still holding up? Can you tell pleasw give me an update?
can you do some vids on how the intercooler sounds like?

Its the aem one and the 3/8
Cost to put that much power to it? How fast does it pull to 100mph or 125mph (200kph)? I've blown a lot of subaru motors on hill climbs. Love driving them. But scared to buy another. They just get so hot a WOT compared to other engines. But maybe that's must a me problem.
At least 12k in performance mods not including a built motor. Luckily my motor has been ok stock so just performance mods with tunes and installs at leat 12-14k. Ya they get hot asf with a tmic when I ran the front mount the temps were alot lower. I'm sure also a better radiator would help. Ya I'm scared to man better to buy something that can handle the power I think.
How do you like the Grimmspeed TMIC? Any issues or benefits you've noticed so far?
Lol I got rid of it. I have the COBB FMIC now. Gained another 25 WHP just switching to a front mount over the grimspeed. The grimspeed intercooler still got heat soaked bad in the summer. I wish I went with a front mount in the first place
Do you know anybody with a built Crawford motor, forged internals or anythn like that? I'm thinkin of getting a Crawford built motor for my 2004 sti,
This gives me hope! I have a 2017 STI and I havent modded the engine yet but I want to sooo bad. What was the order of your mods? I want to make sure mine is just as reliable lol
Research bruh. Better to get as many things done as possible at one time to save money on labor and tuning.
Me, Myself & STI dont cheap out on fueling
Build the block first. Trust me. Yes you may get away with it, but in time it will fail. Bolt on’s is fine but make sure you find a quality shop. I recommend Metro Performance of SoCal. Over 30+ years of experience. Also, get on e85 with all of the supporting mods ASAP. It is less prone to pre ignition (knock). And if you plan to go over 350 to 375, build the block. 350 is pushing the stock turbo anyway so that will be your limiting factor.
Another way to save money if you don’t plan on doing this work yourself, is to do it all at once. Most shops charge 1500 to 2500 to pull a block. So do it 1 time and get it all over with when you build it.
Get away from uel header too. Yeah the rumble blah blah blah, but 1 you will get more top end gains and quicker turbo spool. And 2, with UEL header, the cylinder heads will be at different temps due to the shorter piping on one side. Not an immediate issue, but head gasket failure can result.
Lastly, do your research. Find what parts are quality and other setups people are running. Forums are a great place as people have experienced things and can advise you.
aSUBIEnamedSTELLA thank you I appreciate the response! I am in south florida so I will look into reputable shops down here.
Me, Myself & STI you will most likely go to Rev Works.
Does all those upgrades void the powertrain warranty?
Yep
how big of a phenolic spacers did you go with to clear the 3" inlet? 8mm?
Yeah the 8mm grimspeed ones
would love to see the dyno tune of the 91 run... when does your tq really hit? when is peak tq?
Check out my Instagram and I'll send you my dyno graph.
Full torque is at 4kish rpm
Now I'm making 413whp on 91 octane since I added a FMIC and equal length header
Do you live in cali ? If so how do I get a downpipe in my car without being hassled by California?
You just have to take it off when you need to smog. put stock one on to pass smog then take it off and put on your downpipe. It's a hassel
@@BlueSTI did you have to do that with your iag aos also? i wish i would have gotten the cobb unit, they have a carb number.
All I can say is good luck. Especially with unequal headers , those ringlands are going to go to shit really soon buddy. Save up for money.

I own a 2017 WRX and was going to upgrade to an 2019 STI but after doing research on the EJ 25 I changed my mind. I still going to get rid of my WRX and go type R I don't want to rebuild and engine right after the warranty is out

15-18 sti probably shouldn’t go more than 350whp if youre trying to stay reliable. 19-20 sti no more than 450whp only because the newer models have the type-ra engine with upgraded internals compared to the 15-18
Yep I'm way over on the limit
They already busted that myth. Watch the videos from IAG, the pistons and rings are still cheap.
@@colorado_koolaid2625 the RA block is the most reliable version of the Ej257 ever made from factory, aside from the S209 block. my 2020 sti is making 452whp on e77 at around 22 psi fp green turbo. stock block and transmission, stock clutch. obviously the clutch is a different story, but power-wise the block can take a beating, and i daily my sti. ive seen some guys running 500whp+ on their stock ra blocks reliably, granted that they dont beat on it 5 times a day. you just need go have the right supporting mods, reliable and good tune, and dont drive it like you stole it. i like the ra block opposed to any older ej257 blocks due to their thicker piston rings and hypereutectic pistons.

Mattias Andersson ya I been wanting to get a front mount now. Do you think I'd see some power gains from a fmic with my setup?
Yeah, i definitely do, and much more continiously Power , without heatsoak in lower speeds and stops in the traffic. The limit for a aftermarket top mount is about 450 whp i think, power over that you should have a frontmount...both for a gain in Power and much more temrature stable when you push it, without droping in the Power cause the IAT temp Rising....
