How to Make "X" Horsepower in a Subaru WRX STI
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- This question has been asked far too often so let's talk about it. I put together a few lists for how to make X amount of horsepower for your Subaru WRX/STI. Please note that there are plenty of ways to make horsepower however this is the list I have put together for everyone. Every tuner will tune a car differently as well but this list should get you close to your goals if not exceed them.

My wife associates your voice with spending money. It’s absolutely hilarious lol
Lol I do apologize for that 😅😅😅
@Fresh_Socks mine too 😂
Wow haha that’s classic,
You could spend 30+ hours on forums... or just watch this video. Well done! Kudos for going into detail about injector duty cycle on ethanol, and fuel line routing options. Bravo!
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
FA20DIT video: ua-cam.com/video/ytYUeQQlfmc/v-deo.html
Please do the EJ WRX video also! I'm sure a lot of information is similar from this video, just the numbers will be less.
@@yancheski same same as this but with exceptions to block and trans 🤙
Yay! Stage 2+ here, why is everything I have to do next more than 700$ a part....😩
Thank you!! 🙌
@@Smeedia what do you think of twincharged fa20?
Just wanted to say I appreciate how much effort you put into this! Can’t have been a small amount of time putting all these lists together and making sure they’re all reasonable for each horsepower goal. Thank you good sir 🙏🏽
Thank you! Just trying to help out the community where I can 🤙🔥
Would love to see an fa20 build list. Also love the channel, keep up the amazing videos.
I'll put something together 💪🔥
Would love to see one for an fa wrx!
I'll see what I can whip up 🔥
@@Smeedia it’s been about 5 weeks since I dropped off the final parts check on my 2015 wrx build. Fully built stage 2.5 iag closed deck block, boost labs twin scroll 500hp capable bolt on turbo. All the supporting mods and flex fuel kit. Hopefully getting her back as soon as the turbo comes in off back order!!
Hopefully it's soon 🔥🔥🔥
Cobb AP, Perrin boost controller, Grimmspeed charge pipe, Go Fast Bits full recirculating BPV, Grimmspeed TMIC, Mishimoto TGV delete, Perrin stainless steel exhaust header, Grimmspeed J pipe, Subaru STI exhaust for WRX, IAG AOS, EGR delete, Fluidampr, Protune. Weight reduction included Wedsport rims, PST carbon fiber driveshaft, Brembo brakes all around and Odessey lightweight battery. 278 WHP, 329 lb ft torque. Decent respectable increase giving quick reliable responsive fun and good mpg at 80 mph.
Yes that’d be awesome
You forgot the biggest tip of all....when upgrading for more power never cut up your stock wiring harness unless you work at iWire 🤣
We don't talk about the forbidden spaghetti 😅
Ive fixed enough iwire cars to know even they are not good at what they do.
@@evanrosario ok than what other company is better than iwire?
Never had an issue with any iwire product
Pretty accurate list for all these numbers. However, I would go with at least forged pistons if the car will make > 350 whp and will be driven hard. I'd also use a closed deck if going beyond 450 whp. I wouldn't risk cracking a sleeve after spending so much money.
Definitely never hurts to do so 🔥
My RA block took a beating in the regular at 456WHP. But for reassurance pistons are not a bad idea. But then you go down the rabbit hole of a bore and hone, then might as well do rods etc
We definitely need a video for making power on EJ WRXs
For the most part it's fairly same same with the exception of the trans and shortblock limitations 🤙
@@Smeedia bigger intercooler and better heat shielding around the turbo is a good addition too for wrx. My time attack car tended yo heat soak alot before I made those additions
@@Smeedia good to know.
One question about the transmissions tho, does it make sense to build the 5 speed or should you just get a 6 speed?
Personally I'd say 6 speed swap 🔥
No joke all you gotta do is swap everything sti into the wrx and run a vf48 turbo on the jdm ej205 block you can make 300 easy don’t go over or you will run into problems
Just to show how the little 20g turbo can still push power is that I am just shy of 500whp running that turbo! I believe we think alike as I actually had the same mods to the brand, as you listed!
Which 20G?! 👀🔥
@@Smeedia The Blouch 20G-XTR with the 10cm hot side. Although I am running pretty much every supporting mod to get there but still :)
Blouch 20G got me to 431whp/399tq limited by my ets top Mount🔥
My cobb 20g maxed out at 415whp on E85 back in the day. Was stock headers and heads however but running 21 psi. You’re definitely maxed out on the efficiency of that turbo
3:00 - DO NOT get the competition IAG AOS unless you have a tune specifically for it. I talked about this with my tuner this week and he said it will cause an overall rich condition that will eventually damage the engine. Stick with the Street version.
FA20 PLEEEAAASE!!!! it would be awesome if you could also talk about the BRZ manifold swap and if that's worth it vs other options.
I can whip something up 🔥
Please make one for the FA20 WRX thank you!
I'll see what I can do 🔥
so all I've got right now is a redline intake, an aos and an act full face clutch with streetlite flywheel. if I want to run down pipe and catback, is all I need is the injectors and fuel pump? i was about to buy that whole ass kit that's like 2k with the rails and all that with it.
Pretty much all good information. Only recommendation: Upgrading to dual fuel pump / hangar isn't necessary until over 600whp. A single 320lph AEM will flow enough to push e85 up to ~305lph @ 600whp. Running a 2nd pump below this power level is just overpumping the system which will heat up the fuel. This is how "vapor lock" is induced as the pumps just heat the fuel during highway cruise until it gets to vapor transition point when it gets up to the warm fuel rails / engine bay. If you have a good quality ECM that can read the digital signal from the flex sensor, definitely keep an eye on fuel temps if your system is running dual pumps full time.
My AEM was capping at 400WHP on E85, the fuel pump is a little over kill but running it with a Hobbs switch from Iwire should help to prevent from over feeding and over heating. Normally I kept mine around 15PSI or so. So if it needed the fuel it was there. I've seen some 450LPHs do work on E85 as well
@@Smeedia Interesting. Most fuel flow calculators quote 300lph being able to hit 500whp on E85 no problem. I'll keep that in mind when I go in for my E85 tune in a couple months. Thanks for the heads up!
The 450LPH from walbro is a killer set up for single pumps. On E85 on a single 340lph we bumped up base pressure a little to compensate and worked but wouldent advise it if you can avoid it 🔥
@@Smeedia Completely agree. Unfortunately the big bell bottom of the 450lph pumps doesn't fit in the stock fuel pump housing
In the spring when I go to the Dyno, I’m going to try to push this same pump.
Aiming for 550, on a hardwired AEM
DO NOT GET A CRAWFORD AOS! Save your money and get IAG. Go crawford and you’ll have oil in your Intercooler. Just friendly advice👍
IAG 🤌
Would love to see a list for older models pls king, specifically WRX 2011-2014 models 🙏🏽
Should be pretty same same with the exception of the block and trans 🔥
@@Smeedia As in, those blocks and trans will blow up after 300rwhp? lol
Can you update this video due to cobbs green speed update or do these mods still apply?
It's still relevant even after the update 🙏🤝
Cobb 20G can make around 390-400whp at 20 lbs. My friend made 398whp with all mods you listed for the 350whp range. Also I would recommend upgrading all fueling for anything over 350whp. Good job explaining though. This is very helpful especially for newbies.
Cobb rates their 20G at around 400ish max, I always over build to give more head room than push parts to their limits for growth. But you can make more with their 20G 🤙
U forgot the +hps stickers ....
You right 😅
Would love to see your take on how to make X power with greenspeed in play.
how much power can the RA block hold reliably?
This video is so helpful, it would be nice if you could make a wrx fa20 video. It would save a lot of time. I’m working on pushing more horsepower but don’t have much time to sit around reading forums. This style of videos is really helpful and I would really appreciate it if there was one for the wrx as well. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Video should be out this week 💪🔥
Yes, FA20 please. Nightmare mode Fa20 with CVT without wimping out and saying dont do it
Also what HP should I start chopping up my wiring harness? :)
Why you gotta add the CVT lol
@@Smeedia a challenge worthy of your skill. My CVT stage two right now :), i want to hear your thoughts....you dont HAVE to play on nightmare mode...
What's a matter mcfly...chicken?
Personally I like the blouch ball bearing 18g over the Cobb 20g. I did the oil pan and pick up tube on my stock turbo car I think it’s just a good idea and want to do the tgv and 2nd air pump deletes before upgrading the turbo as well.
The Blouch turbos are great, Matt uses the 1.5XTR on the outback that was in the video 🔥
I have 2005 Subaru sti wrx I don’t know what any hole exhaust system brand name will works and I need helped for that
Are you looking for a turbo back? 🙏
Thanks man
I do
Awesome breakdown and thanks for the info! **With your mod list for the 350-400 HP range, what are the pros and cons to running ID 1300 injectors for a pump gas (NON-flex) fuel system instead of the 1050 injectors?
Totally fine to do so 🤙 cost more $$$ but they will still work 🔥
Does anyone know if this applies to 05 legacy gt?
Your channel has been so helpful. Thank you so much. Planning on getting a STI on Christmas and selling my mustang. Thank you again your content is amazing.
Early welcome to the subaru world and anytime! 💪 always appreciate the support my friend ❤
Sell that crowd killer
@@tjlovesrachel working on it sir
My next door neighbor asked if I knew you just because I have a Subaru haha I think they said they were related to you or friends of you.
Question for you, do you have any knowledge on CVTs. I know not a lot of people know about the tuning of CVTs… I
Still new to the Subaru “flat”world…. I haven’t ran into anyone that upgraded their CVTs. Do you know anyone in the Fife area that could give me some good advice? Thank ahead of time boss! Awesome video 👏
Who's your neighbor? Lol
I know the cvt alright, they tend to get pissed around 330WHP or so. I don't know of any trans or performance shops that will touch a CVT unfortunately 😭
Do one FA20 WRX please
I'll see what I can whip up 🤙
Ok I have install the COBB TITANIUM cat back and I had it for about 2 months and I love it but, my wife hate it, has not drive the car since, so I am ready to purchase the COBB down pipe and access port and the intake and AOS, so here is the question will it be louder or will it be about the same
It will be louder with the downpipe 🙏
There is no way I would ever trust anyone else about these things except you. Your videos, explanation, and name brand parts , and neat professional installations. You’re just too good at what you do.
Always appreciate the support my friend and just trying to spread the knowledge 🔥
I like sti's but dam lol that price i think ill just get a b5 s4 and have 500hp just on injectors, exhaust, and turbos lol. Seems like a bit of money just to hit 500-600 in an sti. I love them but then again I see them alllllll over where I live.
Audis are wild when it comes to power, was surprised how easily my Golf R made power coming from subarus. 😳
I hate and love this channel, it gave me confidence to go into my car and now I’m jus like “mmhm probably should of started small”😂 love your work and motivation, keeps me inspired!
Ryyyy glad I can help 😏🔥
Ej207 here first things first change that fucking up pipe the cat inside grenaded my girlfriends turbo… they do it all the time don’t let it happen to you.
Facts, any EJ with a catted up pipe needs to be swapped
Do FA20 please
I'll see what I can whip up 💪
This vid is great. But damn that's a lot of money for 450hp. I'd rather just buy a car that has that much power.
Gotta pay to play with subarus lol
This is great! I know you mentioned an FA20 video, but I would be interested in a NA FA20 video for the BRZ owners. I'm just curious about my options up to forced induction.
When I pick up my BRZ I'll make that video 🔥
nice all your details.. got youself a new follower.. i`ll check out all your medias and shop. thanks
Eyyyy appreciate the support 🔥
If you could make one for FA20 that would be sick. Keep up the good work bro 🤙

Dont go 400HP+ if you daily it. At that point, you don't want a Subaru, you want a V8.
Not true, old set up was 456WHP in pump gas. 0 issues and best on the car daily.
Daily drove it at 650WHP as well with 0 issues
Do one for the fa20...😁😁
I'll see what I can whip up 🔥
Great video btw
No cylinder 4 cooling mod?
This would've nice a couple months ago, when I was building mine! I still follow your videos religiously, and my build was essentially a copy of what you did to the 17 sti before you started putting the flat 6 in it. Went Flex Fuel and using an FP Blue with a 44mm WG. I'm putting down 450whp and 408 ft lb on a mustang dyno. Only thing different from your new list is that I'm still on a stock clutch, but I'm loving it, regardless!
Ohhhhh sounds like some spicey numbers you've got over there 🥵🔥
think u should do a jdm build I live in the UK and struggle to get info and parts
I can see what I can whip up 🔥
awesome video! please do one on the FA!
I'll see what I can whip up 🔥💪
I love you man (no homo)… maybe a little bit… thanks for the dope videos
Eyyy anytime my friend 🔥
Thanks for the awesome work you do. Seen your old videos but this helps a ton.
Glad I can help 🔥🙏
Holy shit this is a lot of things needed to make more power! Just buy a Golf R guys! AWD and you can literally make 500whp with just a downpipe, hybrid turbo upgrade, tune, K&N drop in filter, intercooler, MPI, and HPFP. If you want 400whp, literally just a downpipe, tune, and E85. Done.
For sure. Totally diffrent animals, but gets very expensive quickly getting a Golf R to Big turbo STI Levels. Definitely trade offs. The R would be a better 400-450WHP car over the STI. But I also prefer the subarus AWD system to the golf's
@@Smeedia yes, that’s the big downfall of the Golf R’s AWD system. It’s mostly FWD until AWD is needed. The MK8 Golf R is now RWD biased, but it should’ve been like that the whole time. The STI’s AWD is a lot better, and it also gives you the adjustments for the diff which is cool. Overall, the STI is a much more raw AWD car, but it sucks how much you have to put into it to make it fast and reliable.
You're. The. Man. I've got my 15 launch edition at stage 2 (down, 1050 injectors, pump, solenoid, etc). Havent done the up pipe yet. Mostly grimmspeed parts. Dyno hit 305whp so I was stoked. I'm chasing 350 next and this will help so much! Stay gold🤘
Ohhhh get it 🔥💪😁
just buy a sti it already comes with 305 lol
@nickyplayz2329 actually only comes with about 240 at the wheels (305 crank). Mine is at stage 2+ now and hits 305 at the wheel. 370-80 crank. Been at this tune for 2 years and it's been fantastic.
Used you list and did the modifications you listed. Here is the list and the results:

COBB SS GESIDownpipe
Cobb Intake
IAG AOS
Injector Dynamics 1050X
dw 65C fuel pump
COBB Fuel Regulator Kit
GS EBCS
Results:
310 hp/345 torque
Eyyyy, not bad power results 🥳
I knew a lot of this information already but it’s nice to hear from someone who has built multiple ej engines and had experience with them. Hoping to hit 400whp in the new year with my wrx. Already have alot of this stuff plus a closed deck IAG block and the sti transmission swap. What are your thoughts on the new IAG oil pan set up and the new IAG aos v3 is it worth upgrading
I actually prefer the V2 AOS, IVE HAD TWO v3s break on me (both the lower coolant lines leaking) I do like their Oil pan quite a bit. Used it on my 05 STi 🔥
@@Smeedia is there a difference between the cheap and expensive aos?
What do you mean by cheap and expensive. I wouldent cheap out on an AOS
@@Smeedia my bad I confused catch can vs air oil. Cause I'm using a 35$ amazon catch can. Just didn't know if the nice catch cans are better
If going catch cans I'd consider something like radium 🤙
Would anything in this video change due to the whole Cobb thing that happened?
Overall no only exceptions are EPA related changes
@@Smeedia Ok so for the 350whp there nothing really changed if I’m correct. Also I see that the Cobb catted downpipe is discontinued. Is that something that I can get any brand is I can’t find a used one?
Matt’s car looks cool now
Riiight! 🔥
Good fucking video man. Good fucking video. 😘 I love you.

@@Smeedia Got the Cobb. I'm pretty sure they sprinkle crack on their parts, because I can't stop buying 'em lol
Which head studs did you end up going with? I was looking at some ARP head studs, but they offer a few, and I'm not sure which to go with haha

What year should I get and if I should get a sti or wrx?
What do you plan on doing eith the car? 🙏

I dont even own a Subaru, I'm a bmw guy but much respect on this video bro. 👌🏾✊🏾, way to spread some helpful knowledge.
Eyyyy appreciate the feedback Allan 🤙🔥
Is it better to save up for all these parts at once or just add them slowly to the car as I can afford it?
Personally do it all at once, I typically buy parts over time, install all at once then get tuned
I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX. Will I be able to follow one of these list to modify my car?
Please do FA20
In the works 🔥
So much effort for so little power 😥 a downpipe and tune alone will bring a golf r to 350-380whp
Two totally diffrent animals, positives and negatives. Also cost alot more to get a Golf R to big power 🤙 but for dailyable power the R is the way IMO
@@Smeedia The R is great up to 450tq which is about as far as most people would probably take it anyways. The R is a street car imo the sti would probably make a much better track car
Can you do this for wrx fa20 please!
Will do 🔥
Lots of stuff for 300 HP on an STI? New turbo for 350? While no intercooler for 300-350?
STI can make 300hp on stock stuff - just a remap.
Just an advertisement for COB
Hi Smeedia great vid, clarified a lot for me. I‘m aiming now for the 400whp with the blouch xt-r 1.5x. I have all the supporting mods, forged pistons and a reinforced head gasquet. The only component at risk now would be my rods right? or am I save with forged pistions and head gasquet?
love you man!
Threstock rods will be just fine at 400WHP 🔥
I thought the Cobb intake and ETS intercooler pipes don’t like each other? You recommend the Cobb SF intake but then later the ETS intercooler along with it. Would I get custom pipe for the IC?
I saw the video where you chopped up the Cobb SF box, this is why I am curious
Man this is kind of sad.......but then again I'm laughing in 350whp on e30 with a downpipe and tune in a vw
Totally diffrent animal, VWs are wild. My Golf R made power stupid easy compared to my subarus
@@Smeedia Yeaaaaah, and back in the early 2000s these cars were TITANS out here.
fa20 video?
Should be out this week 🤙
If I have a 2015+ STI (and in California), could I just get 2011 STI injectors for 300 BHP set-up?
So what is the most power a CARB-Legal VAB can make? If I'm not mistaken, upgraded injectors, fuel rails, boost controlers, MAP sensor kit, downpipe (catted and non-catted), and NextGen FlexFuel ethanol sensor kit are currently not legal in California.
FA platform next please for the love of god.
Coming out this week 🤙
Could you do 08-14 Impreza wrx I have an 08 making 312 hp but wanting to make more soon! Would definitely love ur input! 😁❤️
Going to be fairly same same with the block limitations and trans limitations 🔥
I think I built my 13 WRX hatch more than the transmission can handle. Grimmspeed downpipe, killer B header, boost controller, top mount intercooler, bigger radiator, aem pump and step down plugs, ark grip catback, grimmspeed AOS because it's a daily. Tuned on 93 by Eric at Torqued Performance. I have no idea the HP.
Should be able to toss a log onto a virtual dyno to get a ball park 🔥
What did it put down?
Boost controller? The ECU already does that. Why would you need that? To easily turn down boost on a 1000hp build? Please explain.
What brand downpipe can you use that won’t throw the ecu code? 2018 sti type ra is the car I have.
Fa20 list please
I'll see what I can put together 🔥
Your car looks like a Decepticon in the thumbnail pic 👌🏽
😈😈😈
I wanna get a Subaru Impreza WRX or even STi so bad but I have 0 knowledge about the engines, just to experience it. This is coming from Honda and Nissan, like they're a bit different.
I want to do a full dual pump system using 2 walbro 255, 1 feeding each bank and a big return line with a 2 regulator system 1 each side
I'm going to make 1400rwhp by the end of next year 😉
Better see this happen 😉
So even with 500 whp you don't need to take the engine apart and replace with forged internals, replace pistons, manley rods etc? Can it be done by someone at home (with proper instruction and guide of course)?
FA20 WRX build when? :D
Prob within a week 🤙
not hating but it takes so much to get power out of these subarus. Why bother building a subaru?

Turbo smart BOV, with ETS tmic got me to 431whp/399tq on E85, 360whp on 93, Prob forgot some stuff. Go fmic if you want anymore than that, the 20G will go a little further not much tho. Might help some of y’all out🤘
🔥🔥🔥
Since you used to own a turbo Brz, can you make a similar video for that? love the videos!
Yes I can 💪 I'll probably wait to make that one Until I pick up my new BRZ 🔥
Didn't hear cylinder 4 cooling mod. Is it really that effective? And why don't I see many STI builds with Garrett GTX turbos?
I've ran cars with it and without it and haven't ever seen a real change in how the car performs. Most people use PTE, they work great on subsrus. Garret gets $$$ quick
yo PLEASE o a video for the FA20 in the VA WRX!!!! There are many EJ videos out there, since that platform has been around for a while. But it would be graet if there was some more info about some of the newer engines. And, the way you explaien things just makes sense. From your previous videos, it doesnt sound like you have owned an FA, but i would still like to hear what you think of them
FA video is in the works 🤙🔥
I've owned 6 or 7 FAs at this point lol
02-07 wrx video?
The 2.5 will be same same as this, with exceptions to the trans and block 🔥
