This song is actually a hymn for the god Tyr, who is the God of War and Justice. This is essentially a war chant, something said by the rune master as a sort of blessing over the warriors who are about to fight. They are saying "Tawol Athodu Ek Erilaz Owlthuthewaz Niwaremariz Saawilagar Hateka Harja" which means "I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon the one of the Sun to aid our army". The second part of the chant are the runes themselves which are elements of nature. The chant is as follows: "Fehu Uruz Thurisaz Ansuz Raidho Kenaz Gebo Wunjo Hagal Naudhiz Isa Jera Eihwaz Perthro Algiz Sowelu Tiwaz Berkano Ehwaz Mannaz Laguz Ingwaz Dagaz Othala" believe it or not they are actually speaking in old norse/futhark. The specific dialect is an older version of Icelandic which in itself is the closest to old Norse. Also, most of the vocalisations are meant to sound animalistic, as norse beliefs and Seiður magic have strong connections with animals and nature.

I thought it was the elder futhark but not in the Norse but Germanic. I chant the runes often and it would be great to hear if they did the whole of the elder futhark using their nordic names. Just love this and what a great kulning.

This is the most informative comment ive seen so far, i would truly enjoy picking your brain and learning what you know, im the only son on the norse faith i know and what i know is broken and incomplete, and the only people i know who know the runes use a mix of elder and young futhark, and short twig, and the lack of knowledge about my own faith and not having a community to learn from makes me feel alone in an area that is HEAVILY judeo-christian based

Here in Norway people screaming so loud the sound, sounds like it is from a mic would not be normal but it can work for a festival something i did not know this was filmed at.
But also goblins that we have around here is very quiet they do lure people into places and kill them to eat though.
The theatre piece Peer Gynt (the piece where the very famous In the hall of the mountain king comes from) you can see more how the goblins and trolls work in Norwegian folklore.

New data on this musical theme:
The song's title can be found in the Mesogothic Anglo-Saxon glossary as "In-Maidjan", which means "deceptively change" or "corrupt". This makes sense since the entire story within the album consists of a peaceful village that is corrupted by having to go to war. Therefore, Proto-Germanic seems to be the language.
Harigasti Teiwa Harigasti Teiwa "is a clear Germanic reference to the Negau helmet. This helmet contains several Etruscan alphabet inscriptions that include the words" Harigasti teiwa which are the first words of the song. This could be translated as Harigast (the priest) although it could also mean, the priest of Teiwaz (Tyr). "Harigast" is often (not always) seen as a personal name and that it could be made up of the words "harjaz" (army, troop, warband, war) and gastiz (stranger, guest). The forms "Hari" and "gast" is particularly found in west-germanic. As such the name could mean "war guest" or "foreign army".
Tawol Athodu - I accept the invitation.
Ek Erilaz - I am a runemaster. The word has been interpreted to mean magician or runemaster. The word is an ablaut variant of count and it is believed that it could be linguistically related to the name of the tribe of the Heruli or Herulos. The Heruli were a Germanic tribe from Scandinavia that was invaded by the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. So it is probably simply an old military title of Germanic provenance.
Owlthuthewaz - owlthu (glorious) thewaz (servant). Means servant of the glorious
Niwaremariz - Priest of the god "Ullr" / famous, renowned. From the proto-Germanic term Wulþuz (glory) wolþu- is possibly a reference to a God, surely the God Ullr.
Saawilagar Hateka - My name is Sawilagaz.
Harja - Army - leader of the army; commander; Warrior
Wuotani Ruoperath Wuotani - Oh, Wodan! Ruoperath - famous and brilliant.
This could be interpreted as the following:
    I, Priest Harigast.
    Aaccept the invitation (to battle)
    I am the Heruli.
I am a renowned priest of Ullr.
    They call me Warrior.
Oh, Wodan the famous and brilliant!
The next chant are the names of the 24 Norse runes of the Elder Futhark. This is also known as runic song.
    Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz,
    Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo,
    Hagal, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera,
    Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowelu,
    Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz,

Heilung is something special. I played it to many people... some didn't liked it, many more did but all of them described feeling of something primeval unlocking inside of them. One girl described it as something locked away and bound in the remotest corner of her soul. I always feel an urge to go into forest. I think it is those drums that make almost everyone feel spiritual when listening to this. That sound it is with us for tens of thousands of year, there must be some kind of genetic memory associated with it.

See, I don't think it's about genetic memory. I think it perfectly evokes the fantasy of genetic memory. Which to my mind, is just as good, or better. Kai Faust's Himalayan throat singing has nothing to do with ancient Viking culture. It just feels right. It works. And that's all that matters.

I can find nothing that indicates "Swedish" kulning has influenced anything. In fact, doing a bit of research indicates that Norwegian folklore and traditions, then Danish, then Germanic in general, in that order, are the influences generally in the band.... and I know this kulning has just as deep roots in Norway (not to speak of the topography making it more important)...

I find her voice eerily hypnotic, awakening a primal force from inside each of us. Summoning spirits and (re)enacting a ritual from ancient times, long forgotten in the minds of men, but alive and well in our souls and collective conscience. Echoing from eons before recorded time - amplified history which reverberates into today.

I read somewhere that the way Maria's part came about in the song is when Christopher Juul (her partner) was originally working with Kai Uwe Faust, they needed something else with what they were doing. Heilung had not been born yet and they were still experimenting. She came to his warehouse studio and they asked her to just throw some stuff out and they would see what they could use. That is why there are so many technical vocal gymnastics in her part. She figured they would cut it up, sample it and put them together for the song. They loved what she did and she got pulled into the fold of working with them on the project and they kept the whole section for the song! Not sure where I read it but it was back when I was researching everything each band member was doing so I could get more form them!

Heilung is helping make the music to a video game called Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga which puts you into the shoes of a woman suffering from psychosis and the first trailer for that game features this very song! Another amazing singer that has done stuff for video games is Eivor who was a singer for the God of War ost done by Bear McCreary. I would recommend giving "Eivor - Falling Free live at Old Theater in Torshavn" a chance, its mesmerizing. Also Maria Franz has her own band called "Euzen" where she sings more contemporary styles. Im not terribly familiar with her songs from "Euzen" so i cant recommend anything but maybe someone can help me out with that below. Thanks again for the impassioned analysis.

Watching you experiencing Heilung must be the higlight of this year for me; seeing you nerding out over the vocal techniques and the emotions you go through as you listen to this "one of a kind" band made me smile!
Regarding the native tounges of the band-members, they all speak germanic languages (i.e languages that are modern versions of the language they sing in) so in general, it's not extremely hard for them to match vowels/consonants, even if there are clear differences between all the modern germanic languages, it's not that hard to bridge those sounds.

@@Fueroballguy To be accurate, this one is indeed 'the alphabet song' for the Elder Futhark. Norupo is a song made from the poem about the runes, though it is indeed the Younger Futhark in that case.
Elder was the writing system used in part of the Bronze Age of Scandinavia. By the time of the ever popular viking era (really just late Migration era with more sea raids) the Younger Futhark was in standard use.

One of the musicians uses a human forearm to bang the drum. They also take words from ancient texts into their lyrics. I as an indigenous person (Navajo [Diné]) believe that they are reviving their people's ancestral tradition and culture. I love listening to their music on blast when I am driving home on the Navajo Indian Reservation in southwestern USA. Their performances aren't concerts; they're actually rituals/ceremonies.

Hi there. Im from Sweden and i can say this much. Marias song technique reminds me of what we call "Kulning"/
    "enticing cries" and "Jojk". Kulning
is an overarching term for Scandinavian vocal folk music with origins from Dalarna, and Jojk comes from the Sami traditions in the north of Sweden. Both very old song techniques.
