I'm a huge C. Smith fan. In fact I've been inspired by mr. Smith for 85٪ of my life. This is 1 of the best Solos I've heard period. He's Elite evolution of all the greats Buddy, Bonham, Copland..ect. & my man is Hilarious!!!
I was there that night with my son. Great western hotel stoke on Trent.£15 to get in. Steve white and chad smith. Chad was between chilli peppers gigs and his drum tech wasn’t with him and he had someone stand in for him. As chad said on the night let’s cut the guy some slack as he’s helping out. It’s a drum clinic and it was also educational. A fun night,a brilliant night. I got to shake the great mans hand before the show in reception. Please don’t go overboard on drum tech/sound thing. Bother Steve white and chad we’re brilliant on the night. Take it for what it is and many thanks for sharing this video. I do have a bit of footage myself from the night taken on my iPhone. I was front row to the right of chad facing him,his left. What a player and more important what a nice guy.

I had a Pearl Export kit back in 1985 that sounded better than this kit. IMO DW drums have no soul. Love their pedals but have no interest in their drums. They all sound dead and mediocre to me.
You can tell he's not really feeling it in this one. Chad plays a lot better when he's with other musicians. That is the rightful place for a drummer, after all.
Yeah, not a great "solo". As someone else mentioned, feels more like he is warming up or practicing. It is my experience that most rock drummers are just not great at improvising and if they have a solid solo it is likely because they have practiced it over and over and it is just like playing any other song on the set list at that point. Drummers like Thomas Lang, Dave Weckl, Benny Greb, etc....... these are the drummers that can blow your mind with creativity and untouchable skills on the instrument. Chad is a great great rock drummer and nothing to be ashamed of there........ he fills a void just as these other drummers do. I wouldn't pay to go watch Chad play unless he was in a band and jamming. I would pay to go see Thomas, Dave, or Benny play in solo scenarios.
Can you see how unstable the stage is, and how hard a time he's having keeping the hihat in one place? Problem with players like him is that they need a stable platform. Go look up some of his other stuff and you will see that he can play just fine.
