Chad Smith is literally the reason why I can snap into a good, solid groove. His drumming is impeccable and it teaches so much more than just the fundamentals of solid, powerful, rock drumming. He teaches you how to do it with flavor. I owe a great deal of my metal drumming to Chad Smith.
It's so nice to just go back to the basics. Most people as beginners branch off and focus on one thing and forget all about the other thing, but when you come back to the beginning it really helps you see what you've missed fundamentally.I never would've played that third fill or anything even inspired by it if I hadn't watched this video.
This stuff right here is very important, even if it seems totally obvious. It actually takes a lot of practice to make 16 hits of exact power (loudness) on a drum. I realised that as I started recording myself playing drums and checking the details.
Good video. Love the way Chad Smith can make even simple stuff like this sound great. Another great drummer that shows it is all about feel, groove, and timing.
The insert at 12:45, and Chad's other performance playing with the Kansas University pep band on You Tube, show me that he is so restraint by the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His rock drumming rudiment abilities are sick!
Chad was foundational to my drumming from his old vhs video.. Tommy Aldrich, Chad, Mike Portnoy, Randy Castillo.. Chad especially helped me really lock in with the bass players.
Why? Do you know how loud the drums would be if they weren’t quieted down? The sound guy needs to make sure you can hear Chad talk, and hear the drums without it being extremely loud, and that’s what he did.
WHAT A LOT OF KNOCKERS! I CANNOT BELIEVE THE COMMENTS BELOW. THIS GUY IS DOING A VERY GOOD JOB, EXPLAINING THINGS EASILY AND NO DRIBBLE ABOUT HIMSELF IN BETWEEN.............I THINK IT IS GREAT ...........AS A LEARNER AND I WILL SEEK OUT HIS OTHER POSTS. AS THEY SAY DOWN UNDER GOOD ON YA. ,MATE.
Thank you Chad for your precious advice, great lesson!! What about some advanced rock fills, now? :D And a better recording quality would be cool! :) KEEP THE FUNKY VIBES ON!!
@@karenrichardson4712 it is bro! Chad is an average drummer! Wanna hear great rock, rock fusion drummers? Gavin Harrison, Todd Sucherman, Carter Beauford, Vinnie Coluiata Chris Coleman, just to name a few. Chad is good but not great! True fact...Don t put the argument like "if he was not that good, RHCP would have not been that famous/successful"....well Metallica is successful with the worst drummer the world has ever had: Lars Ulrich.
@@skyhawkheavy7524 Don't worry, I'm not going to bother defending Lars Ulrich lol. I just think Chad Smith is very underrated and kills at a surprising range of styles

Oh i can fer sure dw just makes some real quality products not that pearl doesnt but dw is really product focused where pearl is really about the name they the drum company most people know even if they don't play drums dw has so many masters of the art playing them that it speaks to the quality
@@xcodychaosx Or it speaks to how much they are willing to hook up their endorsees. Basically they just have a giant advertising budget and they pay people to play their stuff. Probably part of why their drums cost so fucking much. Not saying they make a bad product, but it's not inherently better than any of the other brands' pro-level stuff and it tends to cost a lot more.
I know it's a drum channel; but guys, Audio!! I'll gladly jump on the job of audio tech for your channel! His lapel mic was hot, and by 16:30 everything clipped, or you were just using his lapel mic for the drum audio. Either way, ouch xP
what is wrong with you guys??? this is a great video and i wish i knew it 8 years ago when i was a beginner! Chad teaches amazing for them who don't know how to do a simple but effective groove with fills in it.
RHCP9181 Notice how I said, "I know it's supposed to be basic"? I guess I'd just like to see him try and give something more advanced or challenging, something beyond the very bare bones and fundamentals of drumming. That's all I really mean
Jason Likes Trees And he does, its called improvising and experimenting, its just not always on camera. You need to go to one of his drum clinics, I've been going to his since '93.
you can tell when someone turns into an studio drummer cuz he doesn't rest the kick beater on the skin rather bounce it. That way he doesn't kill the resonance of the kick drum
Pearl is slipping these days, unless u can afford their maple or birch series kits. Also the further along he's gotten into lesson, the snare sounds alot more mellow, and not so much like tin can. The head is breaking in
Sune Weisberg Pedersen Yeah its called overtone, but its natural and occurs on most snare drums. Overtones always get drowned out by the sound of all the other instruments so you will probably ever be only one who hears it, if you hear it at all when playing with other musicians. But if you can rid of it through tuning of the snare heads, adjustment of the snares, and dampening the drum head (aka drum skin) using "moon gel" that they sell at guitar center and music stores, or taping fabric like cloth, or even toilet paper, but doing these things effect the sound of the snare in a way you may or may not like, so see what works for you

Great crash course on drum fills! Glad to see famous musicians using their fame to teach others who look up to them.

I know huh!
So true. Recordings are where it shows up the most. If any drummer wants to be a recording musician, they need to master these basics.
Good video. Love the way Chad Smith can make even simple stuff like this sound great. Another great drummer that shows it is all about feel, groove, and timing.
Great lesson. My instructor also tells me I need to breath during a fill or groove change. When in doubt, go back to the basics.
Man I love this guy. What a natural teacher.
I like how simple and straightforward this is. Lives up perfectly to its title
Thanks. Now I know what Chad's drums sound like through the little mic attached to his shirt meant for his voice. Good work sound guy.
I had a Chad Smith snare drum some years ago, it was a fabulous noisy thing, loved that drum

The best part of this lesson was keep breathing. Especially since I work in EMS LOL
fire the recording engineer
Cedar and Sound Studios fucking awful!

He is a great teacher. I learned this pretty quick.
I see the sound guy choose the "St. Anger" snare preset.
Ignorant 😂
It’s a brand new head I guess, as the “lesson” goes on it sounds less ringy
Great work Chad. Like the HHX crash. Cheers.
Beautiful kit!
haha I like his style of teaching, very clear and easy to understand. Nothing complex.
Chad Smith rules! King of the drums!
Great CHAD!!! MY FAVORITE DRUMMER
Thank you sir! You're awesome!
Love the Shimmer of Oz Reference kit in the beginning. I have the same kit but with 2 more rack toms.
great video, thank you!

Teaching drums is a true skill😳
I wish UA-cam was around when I was trying to teach myself how to play drums. You damn kids have it so good and you don’t even know it!

I love this guy!
Thanks Chad !
Those Sound really good.
Great. I like this guy
I think Will Ferrel was messing with the compressor Chad....he's still not over the drum battle!
This video inspired me to play drums
Not enough Will Ferrell references in the comments
Sean Cannon needs more cowbell
Great lesson))

Chad Smith loves fills
Yay! Finally found alesson from Chad Smith, the Best drummer in the world! He sounds a bit drunk in the beginning, right?
the bomb of a druns
And.. you've really got to do some Buddy Rich
will ferrell is awesome
What that pearl drum set?
Instructions from Chad Smith! This doesn’t happen everyday people!
Great lesson. Chad looks a lot like Will Farrel when he plays the fills unevenly.
What size bass drum does he play on usually?

11:26 actually sounds pretty good, but it's not gonna mesh well with rock.
+Angela Low it's for practicing. If you do it righr, then it's easy to you to play different fills.
Wasn't he in the movie "Elf" ?
that pearl model using?

Buddy Rich memorial concert.

When he intentionally plays poorly he fucks up.
