      UltraPercussion If you can find some Emperors made with the smooth white film under the coating those are NICE. I believe Remo does this for certain drum shops at their request. All mine are from the same drum shop. The drum shop closed so I would have to hunt some people down to get some answers. There's a bit more midrange presence and low end. It's a similar sound to Vintage Emperors. It just a touch different. I guess the best way to experience it is listen to some demos of smooth white vs clear vs coated. I haven't seen the white film used in the past few batches I purchased but I think Remo should offer this as an option. The white film sounds EXCELLENT coated or uncoated.

    I have to admit that there was a time when I miss judged Chad Smith. I had thought that he was maybe just a decent mid level drummer who just happened to be in one of the biggest and most successful bands in the world. That was due to the fact that for the most part RHCP didn't require the need a for a lot of complex fills etc. etc. in their songs. Chad seemed to just be a steady no frills drummer who just played what was needed to make a good song. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. Ringo was perhaps one of the best drummers ever for just playing just what the song needs to be good, or in the case of Ringo and the Beatles GREAT songs. But after seeing him doing drum work away from RHCP I came to realize that he was actually waaaaaaaay above mid level and was next level. Plus I learned that he was just a regular nice guy much like his late great good friend and drumming great Taylor Hawkins.

    why Remo? I don't know. I have used all of the top brands of heads, but mostly stick with Evans because of the price. imo g2 clear is equal to emporer clear. g1 clear is equal to ambassador clear and so on. I have seen new heads from Evans where the coating is virtually indestructible, it is applied with infrared light and they claim it will never chip or peel no matter how hard you hit it.

    I don't have the luxury of testing drum heads. I wish i could. What i do is change brands all the time until i find the one. Now i have the Evans G1 (not leveled at 360 yet). The center has gone uneven. I am going to buy either st, st dry or g14. I want a good ring and just the right fatness. Pretty much the way snare sound in the song "Mustang Sally".

    • @ElanOkonsky
      @ElanOkonsky 10 років тому

      I came across your comment and I couldn’t help but to shoot you a reply! There are many factors that play into the sound a drummer wants to achieve from his or her kit, and it all starts with the material and size of your shells. After that is taken into consideration (Ply/Wood/Acrylic/etc.), you have the seating of a drum head on the shell, which can be affected by the bearing edge, flexibility of your hoops (Flanged/Die-Cast).
      Just to throw this in there, the room in which you play in is also a huge factor of sound.
      In my experience, I have stuck with maple shells (6 or 8 Ply - Snare, 6 Ply Rack Tom, 8 Ply Floor Tom, and 8 Ply Bass Drum). I use triple flanged hoops on each drum, as well as Remo heads.
      I don’t know what kind of set up you have going for yourself but as far as your snare, I would recommend (only Remo recommendations here) a Coated Ambassador batter and a Clear Haze Snare size resonant. If you want an extra touch, try 16-strand snares like custom pros from PureSound.
      This is the first time I have really done this but let me know fi you want any more input!
      I hope this helps,
