    As far as fishing in bad weather I'll put it like this. You are guaranteed not to catch a fish staying home.

    If you see lots of birds sitting on power lines, this means low barometric pressure. And, if you see mares-tail clouds, it’s going to rain within 24-36 hours. I think there is science to back up both of these, but whether it helps us specifically in fly fishing, not sure.

      Interesting observations. I used to be(well I guess I still am) a pilot and we had a bunch of acronyms for the weather changes. Cirrus clouds can be an indication but it needs to be followed by cumulous clouds(the fun puffy ones) etc. I will make a video on it I am sure. Thank you for sharing and hope you get on it this weekend

    "salmon don't bite in the river" yes they do, just not to eat. At least that's the case for Atlantic salmon here in northern Europe. Maybe there's some distinction in question here, or misconception.

    • @greenhornflyhorn
      @greenhornflyhorn  6 місяців тому +1

      In Canada Great Lakes region. The only native salmon we have is the Atlantic but also have coho, chinook, pinks. I feel like i am missing something here but!! The point is that here they eat eggs and strike streamers too! Pretty sure it’s out of aggression but the egg bite happens all the way up to the spawning grounds. I also have luck with stonefly patterns here. Skating flies is slowly becoming a thing in my area too. Anyways, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts from Europe with us. Best of luck over there🤘

    You made some wonderful points and one I really need to work on is that of fishing whilst the river is in a spate condition, as the local river I fish on responds very quickly to rain fall and holds its levels for some time as well as looking like hot chocolate during the spate, normally I would not fish under these conditions. Do you have any suggestions for such occasions, do you opt for a larger fly like a streamer or a brighter coloured fly or fish with the wets? I am not used to fishing during spates, so it is all new to me. Many thanks from the other side of the big pond.

    • @greenhornflyhorn
      @greenhornflyhorn  6 місяців тому +1

      It all depends on water temps and what season we are in. I think I will make a video on it this season. I really enjoy using deer hair streamers like a Sex Dungeon. Also stuff with sili legs really helps too. I will usually go with larger nymphs than usual. If you know your river well, take note where the big rocks are, and under cuts. That’s a great place to find fish in bad weather. They ALWAYS go to structure that is familiar. Hope this helps for now🤘

    Let me help remind you , it’s to hot , it’s to cold ,it’s to sunny , it’s to cloudy , it’s to calm , it’s to windy, hi pressure has set in , low pressure has moved in , the moon phase is off , the waters color is off , there no hatches . Your not deep enough , your to deep , your flies to big , your flies to small, you have to much flash , you need more flash , your retrieve is to fast , your retrieve is to slow , These were some of the first things I learned about fishing . Thanks for adding to my joy :-) Heading tarpon fishing next week , the ocean will have its own challenges, can’t wait .

    your point re: hook sets not being free seems odd to me. Your point was that there's the risk of snagging bottom and losing flies, which aren't free. But this risk doesn't hinge on hook setting. If you are dredging bottom you can snag up without doing hook sets. The issue is weight / drift management / indicator rigging / etc.
    The main cost of a hook set (to me) is that it ends your drift and you could spook fish-- so it pays not to set too often.

    Good points, but I think the, " salmon don't bite in the river", theory is referring more to the salmon not feeding during the spawn. They bite in the river due to competition and aggression, particularly during the peak spawning season. But not necessarily because they are hungry

      I have seen guys with legit bobbers down right in the gravel next to fish spawning. Also have seen them smash chartreuse(only in the early AM) in the same spots. It's wild, there are outliers in every pod. These are my observations of great lakes fisheries of Ontario. It's such a great topic and have been banking some footage of this but sigh* it will take me at least another season to get the footage needed. Thanks for stopping by!

    Good stuff, though I must admit having your fly color at least make sense given the natural light has helped in my experience. Mostly with not having anything too bright on a dark day or stained water. Damn thing looks atomic down there -and unless it’s all been in my head I think it doesn’t get as many bites as if it were more natural. Then again sometimes the white bugger is the only thing that works.

    The best time to go fishing is when you take time. Fish can sense movement through the lateral line. Some fish as catfish rely on a sense of smell.

    First one is partially correct. "Light day light fly..." is based on the fish's perception of colors with under different lighting conditions and actually holds pretty true over my 30 yrs of fishing. Is it perfect? No. But, plenty of very well renowned fisherman give the same experience. Absolutely, presentation is more important, but disregarding color will net you fewer fish over time. Also, hook sets are free... you're going to lose flies and hang up on the bottom anyways. The point is that you might as well set if you think there's a chance its a fish. At least you named the channel appropriately.

      I think the issue with 'dark fly dark day' is more about flash than color. If it's sunny, reflective surfaces on minnows / pupa will show more flash. So imitate that. If it's lower light, they'll give off less flash, so a less flashy pattern would be a good match. But if a trout perceives color differently, and if the forage is the same color today as was yesterday, I don't see a logic to use a different color today.
      In theory they'll see an olive streamer the same way they'd see an olive baitfish, after all.

Nah……it’s yer copper john grabbing an ancient Red Wood lying on the bottom.
      Now here’s where the story gets good! You and yer buddies git real angry and decide to polar dip for the $2 loss. In fact it ain’t a red wood but JB Coopers bag of loot. You get excited and post it on Instagram saying yer rich. No sir! The blue guys are there fast and block the scene. They take the loot bag. Dang……in all the excitement you forgot to take the copper john off the Louis Vuitton. That’s how hook sets aren’t free…..😉

    • @greenhornflyhorn
      @greenhornflyhorn  6 місяців тому +1

      @@Flies_the_limit well that’s where the story gets good. When asked about the fly line, the boys n blue just starred and said “what fly line”? ……..
      In all seriousness, the way you can lose a fly line is with a good snag. Now this happens but unfortunately I can’t say it’s rare. What happens is with heavier setups (in my experience) sometimes the weekest link is the loop connection and you will lose a sink tip. Although, you can also lose your skagit head and sink tip all in one go. It’s always next to impossible to retrieve due to the current and depth. Now the more rare occurrence is when the fly line breaks off on a snag. Now that truly sucks and it happens. These lines have a good core but sometimes it’s just not your day. It usually happens with a brand new line(like the first weekend on the water manufacturer defect) or after it’s been in service for awhile. Anyways, that’s the only way i have seen it happen. Tight lines and glad you appreciated the humour
