Glad to hear! I consider myself a "hardcore" angler and I use cheap shit. As I see it, it's just tools to do what I need to do. I work as a cook with 2k salary, bust my ass and spend 2-3 days a week all year fishing, spend maybe 50-200 bucks on rods. Had lots of entry level brand rods and some weird brands or no-brand stuff. Hard to tell difference really, sometimes the junk outperformed really the brand stuff. As long as it does the job I am happy. Would be cool to own a Loop, Loomis or Sage premium rod some day, but idk can't do it at this point.

I bought this rod from an Orvis store back in November 2021. At that time, they were including the Battenkill Disc V spey reel, with Mission shooting line, Skagit head, and three Skagit tips in their outfit package. The only issue was the various product package literature had different recommendations for the Skagit head weight. Within the year, my correspondences with the main office, got that resolved and subsequent online and package literature showed 480 grain Skagit, and 420 grain Scandi. The rod is rated for 420-520 grain head range. Their Scandi head has been always out of stock, and I just got one sent to me. In the store, I noticed that the Mission spey lines were nearly gone and half priced for what was on the shelf. Apparently, with Orvis buying up Scientific Angler, the Orvis lines are being phased out. Once again, online recommendations didn't make sense. The SA recommendation for the Clearwater 118-4 is a 570 grain Skagit head. Way more than what seems appropriate, even for the fishing staff at the Orvis store. Go with something closer to 480 grains. OPST recommended their 400 grain Commando head. That would seem too light; however, if you compare the grains per head length, it works out to be about the same as the longer Mission head of 480 grains. I agree with you about the reel seat and ferrule loosening. I would check and tighten as necessary before you move back to the top of a reach or move on to the next reach when fishing.

Thank you! I tie these from size 2 all the way up to 4/0. The size 2, i use it on my 6wt for walleye and small mouth bass(scientific anglers triple density sonar full sink). The one in the video I can use an 8wt rod but i have been using a 10wt with the Scientific Anglers Custom Musky line(full sinking and i believe its 400grains). Before you go fishing for predators (bass, pike, musky, walleye, some trout), use ultralight spinning gear (or a Tenkara rod) and catch a bunch of panfish, make sure you handle them before releasing them. Then pick up your other gear right afterwards and fish for the predators. Thats what I like to do while wade fishing along lake shorelines, seems to work well. I always thought it was the fluttering of the panfish I was fighting that attracted the predators, but smell of fish slime on my hands probably helped too.

You can have the same argument with any two styles of fishing, and many people do when they compare different styles, as is done in this video. Here's how to have the argument: take style A, then stereotype it and dumb it down. That'll be the 'bad' technique. Now take style B, and give it a lot of richness and depth in the way you interpret it and experience it. That'll be the 'good' technique. You can mix and match, too. For example, you can have EN be the 'bad' technique and streamers be the 'good' one. Or switch it around! Voila, EN good, streamers bad. Repeat ad nauseam. Join a forum. Stir the pot. Yay.

Picked up a euro stick about 6 months after getting into fly fishing as a way to up my catch rate. After several months, while I was catching many more fish, I realized it had become a crutch. I had not learned versatile skills for dries, indicator nymphing, or streamers. Put the euro nymphing setup down for a couple years to learn those other skills and recently just picked it back up again. Much happier to have it as one of several styles/techniques in toolbox.
