If you get a spammy message about winning something, it’s not from me.
I figured that when I got it :-)
@@andrewchapman2491 Don't know him, but I have seen guides loose fish for their paying anglers.. That way they might be able to go catch it them selves later.. Should be drowned though..
Wait, you’re not the Nigerian Prince?
I like the huger fly fisherman offering me spam more than you. He is huger and cooler.
ah man, come on! Tim is awesome and definitely fishes! ;-)
Tim Flagler does in fact fish, but no where near as much as he would like. He also is a guide. There is yet another stereotype that should have been included and that's "Hank Patterson guy". I don't think any explanation is needed. Sorry dude, turnabout is fair play. Great video!
I didn't think I would be called out in this one, and then you hit me with the third year guy. 100% accurate.
same here. lol
Same
everyone who fly fishes was once a "third-year guy", no shame; that's how numbers work, 1,2,3, etc. Not 1,4,5, etc. It's called higher math, taught in kindergarten, I think. That's where Ben learned it, a few years ago, right? :D LOL
Yep.that’s me!
yyyuuup
I was waiting for the "former fly fishing guide turned you tube poster." :)
Great video! I was lucky enough to be taught fly fishing by a real deal guy, who still schools me everytime I fish with him.
How could you forget the “trout bum” he has the lowest quality gear(hand me downs), waders with holes, sleeps in the back of his ‘02 4 runner, fishes beat up flies but sticks the biggest fish & knows all the best spots
I second that
That's a future real deal guy
That's me. All of my gear is falling apart and I love it!
Yes, all that but he also does tai chi in the morning to get "centered", to be one with the fish spirit! Also eats arugula and kale sandwiches, not chicken, and never ever drinks beer, ...well, maybe I have one a week!! :D LOL
Because the trout bum has actually put in real time and is respected. Aspire to be the trout bum.
You forgot the “private water only “ guy. They only post monster stockers and claim that “it’s from public waters” even though we all know he’s in The Soque or some other private water
Good point, although that may nicely fit into "Instagram guy" 🤣
I think that's the Destination Guy. You just explained another element of them that Ben didn't get to. In PA, the Spruce Creek and Yellow creek club water guys come a lot from Philly and DC. DC is Central PA's Houston with Richard the Oil Guys.
Yellow Creek T.C. is a half step beyond walking distance from my house and I'll never be able to afford to fish it. I can still catch the monsters that that leave the premises, though... 😉
Bryan Glass.
…Is that the same guy who shows you a Huge fish and then won’t tell you where he caught it?
Funny as always Ben. Confession: I’m the gear guy. Also, I can’t believe you didn’t take a stab at Tenkara guy!
Because it’s not fly fishing
Yes it is! Now I’m offended.
@@adamw8469 it’s tenkara fishing, not fly fishing. No fly line is used
@@pricebrothersinventions4121 ah, but the fly is at the end of the line.
@@adamw8469 I can put a fly on a spin fishing rod and it’s the same.
“The bug guy” may cast three or four times then spends the rest of their time collecting bugs and looking at plants and knows all the Latin names
Yes, the "scientist". I can relate as I was a scientist, for my job, now retired; but I still do like the Latin names, although, usually, I'm looking up in the air, and not down into the water!! :D
Well done Ben from a Euro Geek…
If people really are getting on you for your videos, that’s sad… We all need to laugh at ourselves now and then. Oh ya, I also use tippet rings. 😍
Wow this was so awesome and so Dead on. How about a video on the old guy, we can’t see for crap and we can’t walk the water without a big stick in our hand and we have to pee all the time. I am 67 and I have to laugh and make fun of myself all the time.
I'm in that club, too. Also a member of the Johnny Appleseed/Christmas Tree club in good standing. I've left flies hanging in bushes all over the world. (ALWAYS the flies I JUST tied/bought).
The “count fish with their clicker” is so good omg
My biggest problem with this video is I can't decide where I land in this stereotype list. Definitely not the spey or permit guy and don't have the money for destination guy.
The beer drinker guy: spends all day picking what fly gear to use. Gets to his spot. fishes for 2 minutes and drinks beer the rest of the evening staring at the water
I called that guy “grandpa”.
I'm Bonefish Guy. I tie bonefish flies all winter even though I live in Maine and spend 99% of my time fishing for stripers and trout. I join Bonefish & Tarpon Trust even though my income is nowhere near the median $5 mil/year of the average member of that group. I have a recurring dream where I'm on vacation in the Bahamas for a week with my wife and friends and get to Thursday and realize I haven't gone fishing yet. And I can't find my gear. I also watch 30 year-old bonefish episodes of Spanish Fly and Walker's Cay Chronicles.
I'm the "get off my lawn" guy. I don't want to see anyone else around me. Or maybe that's just a subset of the "real deal" guy. Best video of the year, Ben!
Haha same I don’t even like fishing with friends I just like that time to myself.
I’m with ya. I don’t fish near anyone, because I would hate it if they did it to me.
Haha I’m the same way. I don’t know why so many pile up to fish the same waters.
@@dadeking5472 Yup, good way to lose friends; he catches ten you zip, or the reverse will do it. "What did you catch them on?" "Oh, a nymph, ......or something"! :D
@@ronschlorff7089 Haha it's funny you say that because that confirms my thoughts on a lot of fisherman. I think fishing competitively is really stupid, and that's all it's ever been with every "fisherman" I've ever fished with. I go out to the water to fish because it's something fun to do while I'm there, but ultimately I just want to be there. I love being by the water in beautiful places. I like the alone time and relaxation. I go out with every intention to catch fish and it is more fun when I do, but if I don't, at least I got to be there. That's one thing I just really don't like about fishing culture. I get why it's like that, most hobbies can turn competitive but I just don't consider part of that world. This isn't directed at you personally at all and I have nothing against the way anyone likes to do it, it's just not for me.
As a flyfisherman in scotland we have the salmon snobs 😅
I enjoy fishing the smaller streams cause it's easier and the scenery tends to be really pretty but I'm not specific to one style of fly fishing I use whatever works and go where I have a good shot at some decent fish and I always bring an ultralight spinning rod just in case the fly fishing doesn't work out. I find funny how people get so snobby about using indicators or nymphing or using more than one fly. Like who cares as long as you're tricking fish into a bite and enjoying a day out on the water that's all that matters
Permit guy 100% on point. Permit guy weighs his flies on a weed scale and labels them in his fly box that he never shows anyone. Around here we also have "micro Tarpon guy" who doesnt fish the big migration because thats too mainstream and prefers getting chewed on by prehistoric mosquitos fishing out of a gheenoe in a mud puddle somewhere.
Ive been fly fishin about 3 years and have bumped into most of these stereotypes. In my experience u nailed it with ur descriptions. Im probably a mix of three year and gear guy. Three year gear guy i guess. The only addition i would add is fly shop guy. The guy who wears simms shirts everyday and goes to the shop to talk fishing but only fishes twice a year while living on the yellowstone. Anyway great vid. U always make me laugh.
You forgot “fish guide guy”. Brags all the time about how many days he spends on the water, but that’s watching other people fish. Only went actual fishing twice last year. Always has to take his clients rod for a spin to prove how far he can cast. Will have a knot come untied on the biggest fish but blame it on something else. Livin the dream!
Pretty sure I’m gear guy btw.
I’m the Zen guy. Out for the life experience. Being one with nature.
That’s so me at times. Just happen to be on the water guy.
Had a friend I called Mr Orvis. He had it all. When he met me, I rarely use tippet smaller than 3x. He was shocked. Oh ya, he had small flies. You forgot small fly guys.
small fly guy is definitely one
I'm small fly guy lol I think my biggest non streamer is a 16
@@loganrutherford2426 when you get a little older that will change. Used to be all about that, now I can’t see very well. LOL
@@67cruizer yes, cruel irony when you finally get all the time you need to fish, retired, then you can't see worth a damn. Oh well still Fun.
In Missouri you have to add “Trout Park Guy”. Only fishes the trout parks 3 feet from other fishermen, will walk right up to you and start fishing your home and the idea of buying a trout stamp is terrifying.
I was watching this thinking, aw man I feel like I'm in between all of these stereotypes. And then third year guy came out... got me! Not sure which path I will take, but I can certainly weigh the options now!
yeah same here. I am in between streamer junky, spey guy, and dry fly guy. if its up to me, ill stay right where I am and just use the different techniques when it seems to fit the most.
I’m a fly fishing schizophrenic. I pretty much roll through all your stereotypes. Except the permit guy. Being from Oklahoma I find it difficult to fly over perfectly fine fly fishing water to stand and cuss in saltwater.
yup, that's "big-league" stuff, for me; nice to watch vids of it though, plus wearing those funny looking clothes, would not work for me! :D
You forgot "wannabe guy" that's me 😁
I flyfish with a spinning rod and reel and float, just because I can't get the hang of proper fly-fishing rod. But I do like to fish, and that's what's matters right?
Meee tooo bud. I fish streamers with spinning. And ive been euronymphing with spinning tackle waaaay before it was even named lol
As a blue line guy
You nailed it 100% the location, the sterotypes were painfully accurate
can confirm
here in VA too
I'm a blue line lifer & proud of it😊
I just bought an old bamboo rod from an old lady, I told her I was new to it, only my third year fishing but that this year felt I was really hooked. I get my gear from garage sales, fishing the first two years was just to hang out with the buddies. This year Im for real buy but I am lost, i feel Im out looking for the skinny blue lines in the map using archaic gear, I live near the mountains in colorado.
I asked a well known tournament bass fisherman in Florida what he thought about fly fishing, he said, "I would be a fly fisherman if it weren't for fly fisherman" 🤣🤣
I suppose the reverse could be true!! LOL
@@ronschlorff7089 Very true, since bass fisherman are a bunch of archaic cavemen that don't know how to handle fish properly, according to fly guys.
@@bottomlinebassin2001 Yeah, I suppose they are not All Neanderthals!! ;D LOL
You had me at, "I'm comin' for ya." Knew a guy that only fished a mouse pattern the entire season....wanted the big one. Days and days he got skunked. But.....pay day. On the Madison in Montana. Stereotype? Size mattters.
I learned several things today. Been fly fishing for 52 years.
Yes, me too, it's a constant learning curve, that seems to get steeper each year that you do it. Young guys, if you suck at fly fishing now; you always will, but it will still be fun! :D
Glad I’m into my 4th year of fly fishing now, last year was tough 😂
Yes, it gets tougher now, your expectations are high, and you might even say to yourself: "I got this!! :D
You forgot about the weekend family vacation campground guy rents a camp site aka RV parking space beside a trout stream sees people fly fishing goes a spends a couple G to get to it and pisses off every other fly fisherman in his sight by crawling in their fishing hole
"Entomology guy" uses only latin names for bugs. Says things like, "The Dortheas and invarias are not only different sizes...oh, I mean sulphers." As he looks at you as if you are special ed.
Why you got to dig on Tim Flagler. He is a real deal guy. Just gets paid by or is to do tying vids. All seriousness though, Tim offers no nonsense direct to the point short tying videos that are worth watching. Anything over 7 minutes and your just there to let people know how smart you are about tying…
What about the guy whose been fishing on and off for 60 years with garage sale equipment because he fished with dad, grandpa and great granpap and really just wants to get away from smart phones?
I must admit to being the Dry Fly Guy... Far from a purest but will walk a mile for a rising fish before changing over to nymphs or streamers ...We love your videos... Always finding humor in Fly Fishing... Thank You
Going after Flagler? Really low blow, even in jest, and I guarantee that guy can fish.
From my wife...fishing wife/girlfriend, we have been fishing so much, with one of these people you described; we now hold our own, fish what works (but hate streamers because it makes our arms hurt), guide/captain the boat, and typically catch more fish. Props if you are married to gear guy because we know he always has what we don't.
This is Willie, and I’ve forgot more about fishing than you know.
You forgot the lazy floater guy. He fishes from a boat/raft so he can spend most of his time drinking beer and eating chicken. He uses a bobber cause it is so easy, and he doesn’t have a lot of skill to fish like a real fisherman.
Lmao gotteem
Ohhhhh that the same guy as the Garden Gnome, sits on his seat box fishing a single gold head tungsten fly under a bung (float/bobber) and rather than casting it gets a high stop splash down with a crumpled leader as all the slack will take it down quicker.
If you didn’t fall under at least two or more stereotypes, you’re lying or don’t fish enough.
Don’t forget full immersion guy. Wants to master all aspects of the sport. Becomes a good photographer, caster, fly tier, oarsman, and cook. Fishes all the water columns with alacrity. No species eludes him. Names his kids and dogs after rivers or rod manufactures. Has wet dreams about tarpon or steelhead grabs. Has the right clothing and accessories, but doesn’t acknowledge it. Acts as a guide when taking friends out, but only he knows how much he’s doing for them. Maybe writes a little and buys angling art. Learns all he needs to know about boats and motors of all kinds. Knows he’s good but realizes arrogance is worse karma than bananas on a boat. Loves to fish with others, but is happiest fishing alone, because he can do it his way. Secretly believes that he is just as capable as the pros and hotshots, but possesses just enough humility to keep that to himself. And finally, the bucket he keeps his list in is never quite empty. He’s gotta have something to strive for.
I’m just excited for the screenshots of the salty guys who can’t take a joke on Ben’s instagram story!
Great stuff!! I’ve been fly fishing long enough to realize exactly what I want and what tactics to employ for the most enjoyment. BTW, my longtime fishing buddy-who is FAR from a streamer junky-used a trout Spey AND a streamer yesterday on the Deschutes river in OR and hooked 33 fish while the dry purists and euro nymphers didn’t hook half that number. And no-he wasn’t using a clicker! 🤣
Half that number is way better than my best on Carson R., CA. I scratched numbers down with a stick on the sandy shore to keep count!! :D
Very good, been guilty of all that shit.....lol.
Don’t forget the “wanna be fly fishing guide”. He’s been fishing for years, tying his own (crappy) flies, and likes to take his bros to some of his favorite spots while enjoying watching them catch fish on his flies. Oh, and the “I use a fly pole for everything guy”. Easy target! Keep these fun videos coming.
Yeah, hearing the words "fly pole"; like fingernails on a chalk board, screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech!!! :D
Love it! Pretty sure I'm at least 3 of these guys. Little less extreme, but an embarrassing amount of several 🤣🤣🤣
I knew a real deal guy in the mountains, he was missing most the fingers on his left hand, folded up his 40 year old rod with the line still on it and could unfold it in a snap, and he could absolutely destroy those mountain streams.
I think I’m a cross between the fly tyer guy and the gear guy. I have makes flies than I will ever be able to use in a life time but I still keep tying them. But I’m a poor gear guy so I have “tools” but never upgrade.
Blue line guy because of the location, but older and getting my butt kicked when bushwhacking it.
When I return home scratched, bruised, and/or limping, my wife says I am too old.
Great stuff! You forgot us beginners... LOL!!!
There's also a complaint box for Ben - It's at the top of a 100' pine tree about halfway down the Yellowstone, you may want to bring a ladder. Even after watching the unedited version on Special, this is still great. Nice job sir, you continue to crack us up 🤣🤣
The thrifty fly guy.. cheap gear repaired often.. 8'10" 5 weight rod that started life as 9', but is good for everything.. ties a mean froggy fly and fishes for bass way to much.. never goes far from home..
In it for the clothes guy: He and his buddy/admirer have all coordinated Orvis and Eddy Bauer outfits. At the stream spends more time talking about fishing fashion and esthetics than fishing. Also joined a Harley rider's club that invades local bars on the weekend. Everyone drinks bad beer outside in order to display and admire each other's leather. Live in Park City Utah.
Great video. I'm a bit of most of these guys...and I have a leader straighter on my vest. It cost $2 thirty years ago and it takes the memory out of my leader in two seconds and better than your shirt or your fingers or whatever you use. Sue me and stay huge!
Damn the fly tier hit hard, and I don’t even have a side business for it….
it is "art", so there's that, I tell myself!! ;D
Pretty sure i'm the gear guy...but i'm proud to tell people I'm a minimalist....Speaking of which I need to get me a leader straightener, and a folding chair, and a couple extra rods/reels.....
You've been on a roll recently man. Videos have been super fun and it looks like you've been having fun with them too.
I'm a WTF fly guy. When you tell me your rod and reel cost a couple grand and I out fish you with a $40 Pfugler rod/reel combo kit.
So funny, Huge. I think I've been third year guy for the last twenty-five years...aspiring to be real deal guy. Thanks for the laughs...-Kor
What about the guy making the switch from conventional gear guy to fly gear guy? Wait maybe that is three year guy?
Yeah, I remember when snobby fly fishers used to call those folks the "Hook em and Cook em" crowd. Thing is I hook em (on a fly) and cook em if I'm back-packing in the Sierra Nevada with only ramen and sardines as "back up" food!! :D
you missed the Skagit guy. I only fish in winter for steelhead with huge flies, sometimes catches a trout and gets offended.
And only catches three fish a year because "It's the fish of 10000 casts"
Im curious how he would categorize the guys who fly fish out of kayaks for bass and blue gill...
@@thewildonion me as well thats why i said that lol
You missed me completely, im the Trainwreck Flyfishing Fool. 20 year old equipment, silicon patches over patches all over my decrepit waders, target various species in my warm water river. A few books about bugs, tying flies and one book about the philosophy of fishing. I don't know anybody that fly fishes around here so I'm always trying stuff I read about online and some of it even works! Never fished in a cold water stream except when my warm water river has ice on it, never caught a trout on a fly but have targeted Carp with mulberry imitation flies. Mostly I catch Smallies, Carp and Northerns as they are predominant species here in Midwest. I don't make sandwiches, I carry Snickers candy bars as fuel bars, strap on a frozen CamelBak. I only have one soft fly wallet jammed with a few bent feather poppers, sliders, streamers, indicators and nymphs and carry one spool of heavy tiplet. I love to sit and watch the hatch instead of fishing it, I pick up other "fisherman's" trash, and swear at them a lot on Mondays after the weekend warriors from Chicago trash the river. All in all I'm a Trainwreck Flyfishing Fool. Feel free to use my category as needed, I'm sure there are other guys like me I just don't know any.
How about the regular guy? Just loves fly fishing and tries to get out whenever he can.
Now THAT was a classic, Ben! Well done.
How about minimalist guy. Fishes a rod he bought 30 years ago on the cheap. Carries one spool of tippet, a hemo/scissor tool and three flies stuck in his hatband. Would fish naked if was socially acceptable. If he’s fishing somewhere where he needs more stuff, he just travels with gear guy, AKA, the mule, and bums stuff.
Forgot one crucuial aspect of the spey guy:
Hasnt caught a fish in like 2 years
Pinkys out for big fish guy. Edit to add. The client loves to brag on his sat phone to his buddies. "I'm out fishing dries on the Madison, lots of hatching going on".
Fishing on a stream in se Minnesota. 2 guys upstream about 150 yds away. One catches a trout and loud enough for me to hear, says "thanks for the fun Mr. Trout". Barf!
I like to laugh at those I refer to as "Orvis catalog models." They have all gear from felt soled shoes to polarized glasses. But they seldom wade into a stream and might even fish exclusively from a bridge or pier. If they do happen to catch a fish, they are more surprised than the fish. Globs of white sunscreen is a must. I'd like to say a girlfriend is a rare option, however, they typically have "Victoria Secret catalog model" waiting for them in the Subaru Outback.
Hey, Flagler does fish as well as guide. He's actually pretty good at it and....... he ties some good flies.
You nailed these. I’m the poor guy with ADHD.
I’m the type of fly fisherman who spends several hours trying to match a specific insect in a pond near his house just to catch a bluegill.
The secret no one talks about: they’ll eat a rubber band with a hook in it.
@@Thespanglerangler or just a hook
I expected to fall into a category, but didn't.
Maybe like you, 3 year guy, but stretched out to about 20 something year guy.
But it made me think of an unused category...UA-cam Guy.
Bit of a streamer junkie myself, with a touch of 3rd year guy, but my fly boxes and gear selection would not impress. I was hoping you’d include the scientific angler/match-the-hatch guy who needs to ID every invertebrate within reach and then tries to fish exact imitations.
There ain't no trout where I live and way back when I was jealous about that As a kid I only read about trout fishing from magazines and bought into how much of a challemnge it was. In the video I watched just before seeing this one I watched HUGE's 4 year old son catch trout. How much of a challenge can it be? lol So maybe there's another stereotype like me. The sour grapes fly fisherman. 😀
I'm half real - I'd never fish with just one fly, but I do use tippets strong enough to never loose a fish on that mistake. The bottom does demand sacrifices though, when fishing salmon sea trout in deeeep danish rivers.
What about the perfect cast guy. He just busts out perfect loops time after time but the fly is wrong, the depth is wrong the presentation is wrong, but those loops, hoowee.
You missed one. The "been fishing my whole life" Rod and Reel guy that picked up fly fishing and thought it was gonna be a walk in the park, but quickly learned it was more like learning to walk all over again.
Ben, This is Ben. No, I’m not your father. When you said that streamer junkies are dudes that can’t get a good drift with a dry or a nymph, I thought I was going to soil myself. My buddy Eric and I have been fly fishing together for 30 years now. He makes every excuse not to nymph fish. I catch 10 times the fish he does. He says he is fishing for the big boys. Thank the almighty someone agrees with me. 😏
Ben, you almost nailed Spey Guy, but you just wouldn't understand why you didn't get it 100% dead on...
Welp, I feel attacked in a few categories. 🤣🤣👌🏼
Oh man! You nailed me with 3rd year guy!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Well done! That one was really funny!
Pretty much nailed third year guy…which I am a part of. Kudos Ben
You forgot Tenkara guy.
I fish location X with the real deal guy and he makes perfect sandwiches and always doles out the fruit cups! And damn it, I started buying the fruit cups!
I dislike instagram guy, hahaaha
I'm the impulse guy. Sometimes i do the unthinkable in fly fishing and take my bag limit home and eat them. I usually make the decision on the fly 😁
Just encountered this one yesterday: The I’m a middle aged rich white guy from LA who fly fishes twice a year on Hot Creek and thinks it’s his home turf and glares at you while you leap frog him upstream. As if his $5k worth of gear guarantees him fish and exclusive access to a public stream.
Also, as an add on to the dry fly pureist: I will fish a dry fly even if the wind is blowing 40 in your face.
Also: I wear full chest waders and all my best gear when the creek is 20 ft wide and 4” deep. Like, did you even get your tootsies wet bro? WTF?
I remember being a lot of these.... I was third year guy for about 5 years. Mixed with a large amount of being gear guy and dreaming about being a patagucci ambassador and spending my retirement on "fishing" clothes from them and sims.... Now it's Howler Bros. Wait.... I might be third year guy still.
Good stuff. I’ve been fishing with Flagler several times and he’s closer to Real Deal Guy. Dude is fishy.
Da Beer man..... always has a beer in hand, but not a rod.... self appointed authority on all things fly fishing. Rarely found on the water..... prefers woodland settings. Gesticulates profusely.
Probably add "trout bum", "fly shop poseur" and "hatchery truck chaser" who fishes under bridges
.
Fn hilarious. I used to be Euro nymph guy, now Im streamer junkie guy dreaming of becoming a Spey Master....Ooooommmmmm
How bout just stepped out of Orvis catalog guy, not over stocked like gear guy, but only high end everything, including his wheels. Only fishes special regs. areas.
Yoooo. So I know this guy, who knows this other, and that guy thinks he's a HUGE flyfisherman!!!! He's got some old GL2 7'6" that he won't put down. Some real turd of a real too. Some Argentina mad piece of junk. Only catching dinks with that set up.
Looks like there is plenty of similarities between...guy in fly fishing and ...guy in other activities.
The 'perpetual novice' (or even perpetual beginner) is definitely a thing.
I mostly surf. And there are plenty of guys that make it to can kinda actually surf phase
And then stay there for years/decades.
Other probably universal stereotypes are the "Topper". Where ever you went and however good it was he was somewhere else that was waaay better.
Always the "back in the day" guy. Like the topper but uses time.
"Modern primitive" or "retro" guy. Getting back to the roots by using old/classic/antique gear. Or crazy expensive modern remakes of the classics.
"Too Cool" guy.
"Pioneer/trail blazer" guy. Dude that went some where first before the crowds ruined it.
Also come to mind
Funny! I am a 72 year old Blue Line Guy fishing vintage glass who is just waiting for my inevitable near-fatal fall. Your Gear Guy sounds pretty close to those I refer to a Doctor Orvis. Enjoyed this a lot!
Hi Ben, I was a Streamer junky and now switched to Euro Nympher...who cares about throwing a line more than 12 feet if I can catch every fish in the river?...However I still dont use tippet in half sizes...jajajaja. I like your videos Bro but I still do not agree on Tippet Rings....
