Hi Kelly , there an old gillie i know personally here in Scotland he's nearly 80 years young and he fishes that way for sea trout in the saltwater, I have learned so much from watching him , that wee jerk can be the difference big time , anytime I've tried it they nearly rip the rod from my hand they hit it that hard ..👍
I’ve fished with Shaw. This is the first time I’ve seen a fly fishing video that recognized the skill level of pro level bass anglers. They have bass tournaments on live and it’s very clear who you should be looking to for knowledge. I’m relatively new to fly fishing and it’s hard to quantify the skill of the hosts. Informative video. Presentation is everything!
This single video is information I have been in search of for a while. Thanks, Kelly. You are an amazing ambassador for the sport and always an entertaining character to listen to.
Kelly having come to fly fishing from a lifetime of spin fishing both fresh and salt your techniques make so much sense. While spin fishing, I would never think of animating the baits with turning the handle on the reel, it’s all about the rod. Thanks for sharing your insights.
Thank you. Working this on the White River, in Arkansas. I’ll let you know. I’ve been using this same movement tactic with a 4 inch Floating Rebel, for Bass, for 60 years. Now, I’ve moved into Brown Trout Country. I’ve always let the rod do my bidding. Ill keep you posted.
Kelly, thank you for the content. What does this information and knowledge mean to me? With a Career, small family, religious service and a busy life, fishing isn’t at the top of the priority list. The few times I get to get out on the river, I want to make the most of the precious time I’m taking. Your insight and wisdom put the final piece of balance I need to have success and happiness. Keep it coming!!
Thanks Kelly… The old boys from BASS taught us all well and introducing these techniques to streamer fishing makes perfect sense….I will say I think part of it is fly selection and your saying your flies don’t matter is like saying a tube jig didn’t matter to the BASS pros like Shaw Grigsby or Larry Nixon or Kevin Van Dam. You make me want to get better at streamer fishing even though I only fish from shore and not in a boat. You are the GOAT IMO at Streamer Fly Fishing. Thanks for all your great advice🎣
I just learned more about my favorite type of fly fishing in 17 minutes than I ever have in any subject. Can you teach my statistics class please Mr. Galloup..? im not doin too hot with my current teacher. Im gonna do this while chasing bass with feathers too, I have a hunch its gonna slay. Really appreciate it Kelly. Cant wait to make the pilgrimage to the shop
absolute legend. Just watched that 3 times in a row. A true expert in the field. A "consultant" if you will. Love his shop down near West Yellowstone...the slideInn. I hear theres a new shop in Ennis! Spring is comin!
This is great information from the master of streamer fishing, practice where you think theres no fish so you can focus on the technique, cheers Kelly[Johnny].
This is so awesome and helpful! I'm very new to fly fishing, and I immediately had a "habit" of moving/jigging my rod to move the fly. When I had some fly casting instruction from my local fly shop...the guy kept yelling "NEVER us the rod to induce action to the fly...the line makes the fly action!" I'm glad I never broke my "habit!" And...maybe need to find a new fly shop! LOL
That's the key to a successful fisherman, I also spin fish, my reel is only used to bring in the excess line, my tip, rod movement is the key, many say the ultimate is seeing a fish rise for a dry fly. How about seeing the fish go after its prey under water, of course you need the glasses, that's more fun to me!! I'm going to use this tip in my streamer fishing too. Thanks Kelly
Great video Kelly! Thank so much for sharing your knowledge and experience, your videos have helped me so much. Looking forward to working on these techniques very soon!
Kelly you have excellent details contrasts. I tried a new rig last Saturday stripping stonefly and pheasant tail dropper testing rod tip swimming movements and your rod positions tip movements per cast and hand strips pits it all together.Exciting you break bad habit practicing and focus instinct to master. Thank you friend for sharing tight lines.
72 yrs old and damn, I've always retrieved streamers this way. Rod first, strip second. I never knew it had a name. It's intuitive, really. To paraphrase the immortal Chico Escuela, "Kip you hand togedda"
Kelly, I've been flyfishing since the early 80s, but I've never streamers. But after watching you I have bought a Sinking line and want to learn that new technique. Would I do the same retrieve while lake fishing? Thanks for any advice.
If your stripping hand always picks up the slack, how are you going to feel the tug with your hand? If you are feeling the tug with your rod, then how is this different than gear fishing?
@@irideaduck939 Then, it is even worse. 1) 95% of the cases the fish take the streamer far away that one cannot see. 2) If you are watching the line to set the hook, then it is no different than bobber fishing which I refuse to fish. Some of us in fly fishing for the tug.
Was waiting for the "Hope you like it, hope it helps you out" at the end, when it didnt come, I didnt know what to do next. So I put it here.

Love the knowledge and enthusiasm Kelly. I still cherish the picture we took at your fly shop.
If I had instructors like you back in the 70’s I may have graduated college. . . Nah!
I love your videos. Thanks so much!

Priceless information thanks for sharing Kelly 🍻 The Streamer Master
Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to use these methods on the rivers in Michigan.
Great video Kelly! Thank so much for sharing your knowledge and experience, your videos have helped me so much. Looking forward to working on these techniques very soon!
Brilliant...thanks.We use a similar ''lift and drop'' technique here in southern England for Atlantic salmon in the rivers using weighted ''nymphs''.
Exelent information . Ten people can be fishing the same lure (fly) and only one is catching ,this is why .
Great video to complement your book! Clipping the hook and hand on the head are 💣er ideas. 🤘🏾🔥
Brilliant video, thanks very much for posting👍

Good stuff, Kelly.

This is gold!
Excellent

So eye opening. It’s how you would jig on a spinning rod. Why would a fly rod be any different
How would you do this wading???
Basically the same way or????
Yes
If your stripping hand always picks up the slack, how are you going to feel the tug with your hand? If you are feeling the tug with your rod, then how is this different than gear fishing?
It's not feeling with your hand or rod, you visually see the fish slam the fly.

@@self-taught_angler Having taking the three day streamer class from Kelly this past fall I can honestly say you have no idea what your talking about.
@@irideaduck939 Having eaten 3rd meal today, I can honestly say you have no idea how logic works.
You will have ZERO difficulty detecting the strike, lol.
I paid attention.
The master :D
Little known fact …… Kelly’s middle name is “ Giddy Up “
Goat 🐐
is this with a floating or sinking line?
Either
Its actually kind of funny but if your good bass fisherman turned flyguy your already years ahead in learning retrieves!!!!!!!
👍👍👍✌
Its better to show this in a swimming pool so we can see the action. Too much talk no visual it’s complicated it.
I want to see you actually catch some fish on the Madison , not just a couple 18 inchers . Let’s see it not just talk .
