Getting into an IIT is easy but getting the course of your choice in your desired IIT is difficult
it is easy to get into an iit, there are 23 of them, but it is damn hard getting into the top ones with a good branch..
But not iit Bombay or cs toh impossible hai
Would be so good if this video had an alternative side where students prepared for the JEE exams but didn't get into IITs, the struggle, the societal pressure, degradation of your mental health, those 2 years of my JEE prep still give me trauma everytime I think about it. This video was more of a rosy picture completely ignoring the dark background it holds with it.
And there are many students with less rank than you sitting there and enjoying the seats

I worked in the software IT field in the USA. The smartest person I've ever worked with was a female IIT alum (her husband, also a smart guy, was also an IIT alum). I first heard and learned about IIT because of them. I think my other Indian work colleagues told me about her being IIT graduate and how that's similar to being CalTech or Stanford alum.

So all the Americans who used to think that indians are smart and all they are not, the only reason you see smart indians in America is because they are top cream layer of Indian population who were able to get into US with scholarship or with money. Otherwise average Indian is as dumb was average American.

We, Indians, have toughest exams in the world yet our level of development is not on the same pace with other countries. These students get admission in a prestigious institutions which are harder to get in to than those in Western countries like Harvard, Oxford etc. But I find it quite paradoxical that our progress is so slow despite having a great number of smart students.
The growth of a country is only partly dependent on smart people. The rest hugely depends on good economic policies and reforms, and big businesses.
I consider major factor to be reservations. I will recommend removing every reservation for professor in IITs, NITs, even government school. Removing reservation for students will be very hard because of politics. Rest economy and language is one of the major factor IG.
That's because hardly any of them stay in India after graduation. The education they get is literally free in comparison to what education in Harvard costs, for example. And that's because the government of India pours significant money and resources into IITs and in return get back next to nothing. The CEO of Google may well be an IITian but he is a US citizen and pays taxes to the US govt.

We have a famous saying here in India " In other foreign universities it is about selection (into any big university) whereas in india its about Elimination (Where you need to literally hop skip jump over other fellow students - when you are literally competing with a million people)

glad I was born in the U.S. This environment seems very stressful compared to the admission process to prestigious universities in the U.S.
@@sadsongsthink8490 yeah if you are general+Male in india and want to get into iit with prefer branch you need to be atleast in top 0.4%
In India, things are bit different. Most of the major universities in India are single disciplinary specialised university unlike multidisciplinary universities in most of the countries. IITs are the best when it comes to engineering as they are technical specialised universities. Now there are separate universities that are considered the best like AIIMS, IISc, IIMs, NLUs, colleges like SRCC and Stephen's (all specialised and subject focused, mostly single disciplinary) in their respective fields like medicine, applied science and research, Business, Law, commerce and humanities etc. And acceptance rate of all such universities hovers around 1% to 3%. So, while IITians are considered the top engineering students in the country, the rest of the colleges have students who are considered the best in their respective fields like medicine, sciences, business, law, etc. in India.

The biggest problem is that even after being among top 1% of the students, we are still not able to choose our desired course and university. I myself was among top 0.8% students in JEE Mains but still I was not able to get the course of my desired choice. And moreover quality of education decreases drastically if someone is not from an IIT. Even the topmost NIT(National Institute of Technology) in our country is nowhere close to IITs in terms of research and facilities.

Avg jee aspirant does a two year coaching for the entrance exam, which cost around 5-6 lakhs avg, than they pay 12-13 lakh in iits for their undergrad degree... + hard work of 6-7 years...
And then three guys come to college from "limfosys" Or bata consultancy or whatever... Paying less than avg wages of delivery guys in other countries... (I know it depends on cost of living in a country too but... You can't even buy a car for yourself with this income)

After working in tech for 6 years, what I realised is an IIT degree holds value only at the fresher stage. If you're skilled in your field, you'll start your career with a good salary.
After a couple of years, only your experience and your projects matter.
With that said, the IIT alumni and network probably helps these guys in landing jobs at bigger orgs or to start their own companies, which they should be doing as they are disciplined and smart.
Just an IIT or IIM degree from their top 3 Institutes gets a person a lifetime of credibility. It opens doors even for mediocre students & professionals from these few Institutes

I always find it fascinating that in most countries, you have to apply to university.
In Switzerland, after you finish college, you can just enter any swiss university course you want, even ETH Zurich (#6 world in 2022). Although ETH is very tough, half of the students fail the first year so that kinda serves as an application.
thats because most universities in switzerland are probably good enough, and the student to good college raio is low. it is not a society that faces crunch, in india there are millions of students that graduate high school per year and only some colleges with good facilities and good education, so its obvious univiersities will be extremely selective. 1.4 million people give jee, only 200 get into iit bombay.

half the students failing is SO MUCH better than basically 99 percent of students being rejected in the entrance exam.

I live in the west - having met immigrants my goodness how hard they have studied and worked to get here.

That's actually true and is a huge policy challenge for Indian policymakers. IIT's have no doubt world-class undergrad programs but excellence fades in Master and PhD programs. In fact, graduate programs in India aren't good enough that's why most undergrads from these top-tier universities move abroad for master's and better work opportunities.
Indian people, in general, are so fluent in English and I am here for it ❤❤❤ That level of fluency in English is all I want in my life.
It's just because of English education system because genral state government language school are bad in quality and private English medium schools are better in general
Just for an idea, about 1 million students appear for the JEE MAINS examination every year, which is the preliminary entrance examination for engineering. Around 250,000 of them qualify for the JEE advanced which is the entrance exam for IITS. The closing rank in JEE advanced for a bachelor's in technology in the most desired CSE field in IIT Bombay is around 60 while for metallurgy and all it can go to 3700(for students without any reservations). So the pupils you interviewed here are winners of perhaps the most difficult race in their life since their birth..

@@Account-user not really, look at the population of ST that's the reason they face less competition. ST generally are the people who have given their land to the government (forests) that's why they don't even have income ceiling like OBC NCL.

I got a 93 percentile and honestly wasn't happy because you'll barely get any good colleges at that, meanwhile my classmate, 81 percentile, didn't study all year, has no social skills is happy bcs he knows he'll get a good college even at that. I don't think it's fair for people like me. Also if half of our seats weren't reserved I'd have easily gotten the college I was aiming for

I was blown away by this video about being a top 1% student in India! The amount of dedication and hard work these students put in is truly inspiring, and it was fascinating to learn about their academic journey and achievements.
Yes, it really requires a great deal of hard work, dedication and intellectual curiosity. It's a testament to your intelligence, perseverance, and commitment to academic excellence.
The thing that bothers me the most is despite cracking an exam as hard as "Gaokao" the best institute we get to study is at 150/170th position among the world's best institutes. Meanwhile some Chinese universities scores 70-91 points in terms of quality which are on par with British and Canadian Institutes. No need to tell about US college rankings
Only IIT-B is 172, the rest of the IITs are not even in the top 250.
It's simply because of what they produce iits produce employees while western University's produce employers big difference
Global rankings are based on 5 factors . 1 of the factor is number of international students ,IITs don't have much international students thats the reason of such low rankings.
Let me tell you something ....approx 90% of the indexes and Rankings are baised ..which is a fact !!!
How about instead of winning here, you search in details about those indexes and see why we rank so low.
There are metrics like Student to teacher ratio which is very high for developing and overpopulated countries like our which makes our rank low.

it's established atp that it's very freaking hard to clear JEE main's let alone JEE Advanced. i really respect students who cleared the exam and got into these universities because i was preparing for it myself, and they drain the whole damn life out of you. i am glad i pulled back and saw what i really wanted in middle of 12th grade or something because i absolutely don't want to think what a year more of that would have done to me. firstly the schedule is insane, it doesn't feel like you are your own person. india already puts so much pressure on academic excellence and looks down upon other activities that kids who are even in 5th grade feel bad that they are indulging in some activity which would be "useless" for them in the coming years, and this damages the person like hell. i wish my school had more opportunities to explore various fields, and also that the teachers didn't immediately look down upon you if you mention some non-academic activity.
so many people quit their interests as soon as they get into 9th grade(because 10th boards), and then they get into 11th and your whole family is suddenly expecting you to give them the whole world. 16 isn't really that big of a age, most kids know nothing about themselves or the world and getting thrown in this prep sucks. also the jee prep for two years is so damn traumatic i am not even kidding, it took me four months to even get up and do something else because of the burn out i had endured. resting feels like a sin, you feel like you need to study for countless of hours to make it and that sort of pressure at this age changes you as a person. i wish people would tell more about what prepping for jee does to them other than "it's tough" because there is a lot that goes on once you actually get into it, and no one in 10th standard has a clue about it. if you like maths or physical and chemical sciences, iit would probably be the first thing that appears in front of you when in reality there are so options to explore out there. only people who genuinely want to be in an iit, and like the grind (you are superhuman if you do btw), only then you should decide to pursue this path. it's rough mentally and you will have no avenues to develop yourself as a functioning human, who is expected to live independently at 18. also you have to spend a huge amount of coachings and those are hell

I really felt for the girl who is passionate about drawing but is studying Computer Science. Studying Computer Sc in IIT Bombay means she did extremely well, may be within top 100, in JEE Advanced. But her passion lies completely somewhere else. Perhaps its the society, family, friends, school teachers, etc. gave her idea that IIT is the gateway of good life. Yes it is. But it is not only the option available at hand for good life. If you can excel in drawing, that can also lead a satisfying life. I hope she gets the opportunity to pursue her passion, as earning money at some point is important but the most important is you are satisfied with whatever you are doing as means of earning. Also, another views of students I like most is that mostly they want startups. That's what India needs. I always feel that there is great sense of happiness and self-satisfaction if one can build its own place of work and employs few more. No matter how small your company may be, its the sense that you yourself is controlling your own life is something only very few can feel.

"It's quite easy." I don't understand how this guy can say that after talking about how prestigious and selective it is to get in. Even if it's true that it's objectively more difficult to get admitted to an IIT than Harvard or Stanford, all of the most highly ranked schools are located in Western countries. There's a reason all of the ground breaking research and scientific innovation take place at the likes of the American Ivies or Oxbridges of the world. As for the gender disparity in enrolment, this has nothing to do with a lack of opportunities for women. If you look at the gender breakdown of engineering schools like MIT or Caltech, these are some of the few schools where men outnumber women because men still dominate in most of the STEM fields. In most other colleges and most other fields, the gender ratio tips in favour of women.
Its not tougher though. The thing is, the competition is inflated due to the huge number of exam takers. But the actual difficulty is way easier as there are at max 100k students who are really giving it their all for the exam. For college application to Harvard and other Ivy's, you have a limited number of colleges you can apply to as far as I remember in the USA, so only those who think of themselves worthy of those colleges apply. Another thing to consider as that these colleges hold worldwide acclaim, hence the stage for the competition isn't just one country but the world entire.

In India, there’s this preconceived notion prevailing that says that the Students who take up Maths and Science are the ones who would actually excel and do well in their life whereas the students who end up taking commerce and humanities in their +2, are the ones who would be deemed as “intellectually weak”. I consider myself really fortunate for the fact that my parents didn’t force me into the rat race of taking up science or maths as a stream and stood by my decision of choosing commerce without maths. A huge shoutout to all my friends struggling to get into IIT’s and contemplating suicide everyday💀!
Edit - I totally forgot to mention that the university being mentioned in this video is IIT for undergrads but that isn’t it; there’s an even more tough competition to get into the IIM (Indian Institute of Management) ABC (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta) branches for the postgraduate programmes. They’ve an acceptance rate of merely 0.67% and usually, the IIT graduates are the ones securing a seat at IIM’s. Welcome to India, Folks🙏🏼.
Unfortunately I took sci because I got enough marks to join sci stream for my +2 and everyone just pressured me to go in that medical line even though I preferred humanities. After witnessing many mental breakdowns over the course of those two years, my parents finally allowed me to switch to arts 🎉🎉 I still effed up my boards tho lol went from a top scoring student to a less than avg one 😢

I’ve friends who chose Science simply because of either parent pressure or peer pressure and now they aren’t able to get through JEE and NEET.. i really appreciate the fact that you decided to change your stream, given that you didn’t find interest in science. Science is preferred simply because it develops your brain. Arts and humanities do not develop your brain to the extent science does
Dude as an engineering student from a Tier-1 institute, I wish I had taken up commerce instead. I have a high paying job and everything, but there's only so much scope as a software engineer. Commerce opens up so many opportunities. Getting a good GPA in a com college improves your chances of getting into a good MBA/MS or MA in Finance abroad. You also get to take part in multiple activities during undergrad which reflect on your resume. Once you get into a good postgrad programme as I mentioned above, the job you get and the money you make would be insane, way more than a doctor/engineer from India. Consulting, finance, public policy, product management, the options are endless.

@@hunsdicker he is not wrong tho , the struggle you do to get into an IIT is equivalent to the struggle someone else does to creat a big business, and the thing is business can have profit and loss at the same time, but iit seats are too low that you have less than 1% chance to get into iit and then get a well payed job, investing into something better than IIT can give you more time for yourself, less depression , and in some cases more money as well.

Education is sometimes imparted differently in the west.
In my master's (USA) Engineering Project Mgmt. class, the prof. (a distinguished civil engineer) gave us a problem dealing with the construction of a plant and number of worker/days to complete. The prof. gave a twist at the end mentioned that if we remove some workers from safety and allot them to construction, will it completed before time. Every Indian (including me) did the math and answered 'yes'.
The prof. gave all of us only half marks for the answer (for the math part), and deducted the rest saying the answer should be - 'we will never remove anyone from safety'. Two Americans got that right. Right there and then I noticed the difference in our teaching philosophies, haha !

It's never about selection in Indian entrance exams, its only about ELIMINATION! These exams do not test us on how much have we understood the concepts, or how good are we at certain topics, they set the question papers so tough that all you have to do the whole of two years is mug up the textbook each and every day and on the day of examination you go and puke out the mugged up stuff. They set the question paper really tough just to make it difficult for students to score which makes it easy for them to eliminate

The acceptance rate is a reflection of two things:
1. We have more people than colleges
2. There are a disproportionate number of people who want to study Engineering.
The solution is not to turn students into hermits with limited life experience. It is to provide better infrastructure and opportunities in other fields so the demand is not skewed towards Engineering.

I think pressure and stress would be their enemies in college since most of the students can't cope with stress and they sometimes broke down I'm hoping that they won't go to that stage. Don't forget to rest easy and make time for yourself.

Can we talk about the extreme academic pressure Indian students go through just to get into premium institutions and the pressure to take up either medical or engineering as a profession in India?
there is a reason for that India being a low income country needs innovators/stem field professional it really can't afford to invest extravagant amount of funding on non viable or useless professions. Apart from that people in stem in general earn substantially more than their non-stem counterparts across the world so it's given why the society creates a halo around those specific field

I've been to Denmark for my exchange programme and almost all the teacher had a PhD in stem fields.
To my knowledge law is just as much if not more of a respected profession so I don't think bringing them in the debate holds much value.
Lastly a nation does not need it's artisans, it's a vastly overhyped creed with no actual economic output it can be a hobby or 'timepass' but not by any means a 'profession'. Especially when we have large ML based models to replace them so easily.

@it's me see first off all for getting 95 percentile you need to focus on chapters that are frequently being asked in jee mains. Refer to past 10 year papers and try to analyse which chapters are frequently being asked! For chemistry focus on inorganic and organic as they can fetch u easily 8 to 10 questions! Then in physical go for short formulas like for electrochemistry you can go for all formulas in one sheet and attempt the mock papers then after writing formula sheet
@it's me for physics trick is simple! Focus on waves, thermo, current,shm, kinematics, projectile, Newton's law, modern this can easily get you 10 questions correct. And revise thoroughly formulas of each chapters

@it's me it's been 4 years since I did jee. But the secret of me cracking in first attempt and getting iitb is smart study along with hardwork and more of previous paper analysis approach.
yes the competition after getting into IIT is on another level its not only about Academic scores but projects research and lot more getting noted highlited creating a greater path is what is all about coz one will get a job but getting or be able to choose what job or field specificly you want to land is what the competition is about. Extra acchivements to be added on the resume along with the academic score is really important.
It's high time the people and the academicians realized this, and bring about a reform to match the demands of the job industry and create more employable students.

Yes those students are in top 1%. But that collage isn''t single good collage or university in india. If we only talk about engineering stream then there are over 50-70 government collages which can change your life if you got admission. But if you want reaserch based collages then their are less than 15.
It doesn't matter in which class or which university you are. you have to study hard for getting good marks in any class or university and I think in India students study almost 12 hours in a day who are in school and they give 2 hours for coaching and 8 hours to school and 2 hours for self study.
So it's too hard.

Meanwhile chinese students: studies 13-15 hours a day

In India it's different, like most of universities are focused on a single field. Like in top institutes, IIT for for engineering, IIM for management and business, IISc for Scientific research etc. All of these have various ratios of acceptance. Yes all are harder to get into but IIT is bonkers because most students opt for engineering after high school and the acceptance is really low.
There are universities which have vast fields to offer but they are quite low compared to these colleges.

just for the record, before everybody starts feeling proud of this, it is actually not a good thing to be so selective. It obviously means that many talented students are not getting selected and being discriminated against and losing what they could have gotten from those highly selective universities due to poor planning and policies of the education ministries in any country.

Sad truth is we're producing highly skilled individuals for developed countries.
IITs are great but the selection process sucks!!! I actually like BITS selection process. They give you the seat on merit not on your caste. And let's be honest the ones who really needed the caste reservation aren't even able to use it. It's mostly the sons and daughters of rich people who take the advantage and land into such prestigious uni and colleges. Not all of them are like that. Some lower caste students really do a lot of hardwork but unfortunately majority of them don't. As someone who has lost a seat of my dream college to a student with a lot less marks than me it really hurts. It's easy to say things will work out eventually but the trauma is just unexplainable sometimes. Not everyone has a strong and bold personality. Some people like me get depressed easily and take a lot of time to recover. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety after the exam but fortunately got better with the help of my family members and doctors 💗
It's true...for me the trauma tooks a lot of days to heal. I finished my school but because of my failure in jee I didn't liked to pursue my education after that for two years. But somehow my dad convinced me to do college education. After my graduation, I got a entry level corporate job in Amazon Development Centre in Chennai. Before that whenever I think of my jee failure it hurted me a lot and ryt now I got an inner peace in my heart. How much the hype is real for IIT, on the other hand there is a same amount of inner peace is disturbed inside the everyone jee exam failures.
@@dkine5586 I can really feel you. It's really sad how students in our country instead of enjoying their studies are suffering from depression and anxiety. I still remember how traumatized I was after my exam. Crying all day and night. Suffered from excessive hair loss and what not. Thankfully I had an extrovert personality so I told my orthodontist who is like a sister to me as soon as she asked my why I'm not as cheerful as I used to be from past 6 months and then I burst out in tears. She helped me a lot and then I started my treatment ASAP.

I gave exam and got 97 percentile in jee mains, basically ranked 34000 in 15 lakh, i don't want to give jee adv to get into iit because thats not my aim, i just want a decent NIT and able to give some time for my game development,

They look so sad. When the girl said she loves to paint and draw wonder engineering is a depressing job. Its not like its a bad job or its tough but mostly people take science stream in class 11 is because there is no other options.
Its not like arts or commerce is a bad but in india its consider a low grade subjects. My whole class is taking science after 10 including me,this what makes IIT or NEET a competative exam. The number of exams applicants are more than the seats available in colleges. Government should do something. People who go for IIT or NEET is because of money problems in their families since in engineering or medical you start to earn earlier. Very few people are passionate about being doctor or engineer. Also parents and relatives are obsessed with their children being an engineer or doctor. If you take arts or commerce in class 11 you will end being judged by people that you are bad in academics and got less in 10th class. Here in India 80% students take science after 10th 5% arts and 15% commerce. The ratio should be equal then only we can develop. Like the boy said even after being an IITian people are not able to get jobs. Nowadays many engineers are going for UPSC and i dont know why they are eating the seats of upsc aspirants when they already have a degree this is a huge problem in india

Actually the biggest stupidity is the parents who in their entire life won't have topped in their class or mohallahs or were average students thinks that their kids will do it if they throw them in coaching centres or just make them be in home and study the biggest indian parenting problem is that a juvenile is not given freedom in anything even taking a stream or a hobby! But the reality is that most of the people from IITs are placed in top companies and you can see this in the alumni section of any IIT on LinkedIn. Compare this to the alumni section of a tier 2 college. And you would know why these people are definitely gonna do well in their life atleast financially.

Most of the Asian countries don't teach about WW2 stuffs, India as an example itself, we have specialised chapters on the topic but they are not part of the curriculum, even if that is in syllabus.

Its a great video, but system of education in india is so much different than anywhere else. There are a bunch of streams and these students though must be EXCEPTIONALLY SMART but there are MANY other institutions holding separate exams and interviews and its very difficult get into those as well. So i dont think theres a parameter that could measure the top1% students in india over all
