It seems that in the West, especially in the US, people think of East Asian countries first before South Asian countries like India. For example, recently, Malaysian comedian Ronny Chieng joked on ‘The Daily Show’ that Indians are not Asians in a stand-up skit and how he does not feel represented by Britain’s first Asian prime minister, Rishi Sunak. Chieng has gotten quite some online backlash for this joke, but how do Indians feel about this? Do they think of themselves as Asians or Indian? Our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Delhi to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indian population.

Asking if you feel indian or asian is like asking someone from poland if they feel polish or european...
never felt asian
To be honest, most Indian never feels like Asian.
However, sure I am an Asian. But never considered it part of my identity or cared about it. It would be same for most people.
True.
europe is not a continet
@@hardikparbhakar7845 Asian is not a race. Its means the people of Asia Continent. Its the US that reduced regional attribute into racial one. Like Indian is also not a race technically. Its a nationality,
India has had a huge influence on Southeast Asian and East Asian cultures. Buddhism probably being one of the biggest examples.
Yeah that's where it gets grey in Western or rather American contexts. Some Westerners say Indians are "culturally Asian" but not "racially Asian". Anyway, it's wrong either way as Asian is just geography.

I'm a Filipino. I see myself as an Asian. I see Indians as Asians. I see the Chinese as Asians. I see the Japanese as Asians. I see Saudis as Asians. I see Kazakhs as Asians, I see the East Timorese as Asians, etc. That's what makes our entire Asian neighborhood so interesting. We are quite diverse. Yes, we do not always get along; that's a normal part of living in such as diverse neighborhood. But we are proud of our continent in the same way that we're proud of our countries.
And despite our differences, isn't it interesting how we manage to keep things relatively peaceful? In fact, this part of the world is quickly becoming a political, economic, and cultural powerhouse. That's the Asian way! We annoy each other sometimes but we also understand that we are all connected, and that our situations can have a ripple effect on our neighbors. Therefore, we still look out for each other because taking care of others means taking care of ourselves. (Although not in an interventionistic way Westerners would.) It is something we all have in common.
This is in exact opposite of the Western way of living-atomistic individualism-where you are on your own and it is easy to feel lonely and alone.
Btw, I like Indian culture so much, especially their food. One of the best cuisines in the world if you ask me. Same with Chinese and Japanese culture.
I love all Asian cultures, period.
I've never been to India but I will be soon. I've been to China and the country was nothing short of breathtaking. I have also been around our beautiful Southeast Asian neighborhood. The term "Asian" has historically referred to people from Turkey to India. This is because the Greeks believed India was the end of the world. When the Greeks learned that there there more lands to the east of India, those lands became known as the "Orient", which means "east", and the people as "Oriental." Unfortunately, the term "Oriental" developed a negative connotation and people formerly known as Orientals are now also considered Asian. Technically speaking, E. Asians are not actually Asians in the traditional sense of the word. FYI.
Yeah that's why in some languages the local version of "oriental" still describes Middle Easterners (Lebanese, Turks, Syrians, Persians) and not anybody east of Iran because they're the "first Asians".

India is geographically a part of the continent of ASIA. However, we are also a sub-continent consisting of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal & Sri Lanka. I think there is a massive ignorance in East Asia about the influence of ancient India on their culture and ethos. Some of the most core tenets of their value system come either from ancient China or India. The Sino-Indian influence in Asia is actually extremely hard to miss if you're informed.
One of the most well known tales in Chinese culture is Journey to the West. Which is literally about a Chinese Buddhist monk who goes to India to get scriptures. So I’m sure they are well aware. A big difference between India and other East Asian cultures is Confucianism, which is shared mostly by Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures.
This is the first time I heard Indian is not Asian. As a person born in China and now living in Europe, I see many of these divisions in Europe /Western society completely different from our perspective as Chinese, Like the term of Middle East or Orientalist. Even the joke made by sth Chinese American Comedy is not shared by any Chinese Chinese. So you can have a laugh about it but do not take that too seriously.
@@IsThisThePrizeIveWaitedFor yes, but that difference is accounted for by the similarities and historical interaction of Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism.
@@abhishekghosh4384 I did not know Taoism was influenced by Hinduism/Buddhism but I can see similarities. I only learned as an adult that Buddhism came directly from Hinduism. Kinda like how Protestants is the reformed version of Catholicism. But Confucianism is uniquely East Asian as far as I’m aware.
True cause I was so surprised to learn that indonesia, which is an official islamic state has so many references in their culture from ancient India. Like their currency has a imprint of one of God's from Hinduism (Lord ganesha) , or the sanskrit origin names of many Indonesians and their ethnic costumes which resemble sarees, the heavy jewellery that resembles ancient Indian jewellery.

Fantastic answers. Very thoughtful. India is a very unique country with very ancient and rich culture. I am SE Asian and quite frankly the majority of the western world when they think of Asians, they think of East Asians only from the soft power influence China, Japan, and Korea exerted. Sometimes SE Asians are somewhat excluded or forgotten as Asians as well. SE Asia are also very culturally and genetically diverse which I think it is difficult for some to see as Asian when they compare other Asian groups to East Asians.

As often with Asian Boss videos, I'm not commenting much on the topic covered, but rather on the meta. So it's great to see these people and how much they are actually 'like me' and how much I can actually relate to them. Even their accent is easier for me to understand than many people from the US or the UK, for instance.

@@yashsinghal1023 They'll take some random crime in India and portray it as the norm in a country of 1.4 Billion. Ground reality is that while still very poor, the crime rates in India are extremely low due to the fact that the concept of "Karma" is something most Indians believe in.

It's also worth noting that in France, indian's are not stereotypically associated to engineering fields like in most of the english-speaking world. That's probably because when you look at engineering learning ressources in english, a large percent are going to be indian. In the U.K. we had the opposite problem to the U.S. - the ‘default Asians’ were Indian/Pakistani people. East Asians were lazily labelled ‘Chinese’. I remember in the past people at work/school/on the street would often lazily label ANY East Asian person as “Chinese”. You could be Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Thai - many people will call you ‘Chinese’ unless you corrected them. I remember at my school everyone called this dude “Chinese Kevin”. Years later I got to know Kevin and actually discovered ‘Chinese Kevin’ the whole time was actually ‘Indonesian Kevin’ 💀
In the US, it would be considered racist to go around calling every East Asian you come across as Chinese.

That's why I'd preferred to be either called an Indian or a South Asian instead of "Asian" term. Especially for the fact that we as a nation are being highly recognised globally for both our positive and negatives (my opinion tho...)
I mean, that is basically the reason “Asian” ended up being the descriptor for East Asians in the US. Cuz Westerners had a hard time telling Chinese/Japanese/Koreans apart, so we are generically “Asian” to them. In recent years, I get the sense that some Indians get offended when we don’t call them Asian, but it’s entirely an American thing.
