My mom used to teach in primary school. Her salary was just 5K INR a month(1-2 years ago). While school earned in Lakhs they paid their teachers so little. Edit: That's not it. apparently they used to wire more money in teachers accounts and later ask them to withdraw some % money & teachers had to give it back in cash. It's not just one or two schools. A whole bunch of them do that.

The taxation regime in India is meant to help the rich. The highest tax slab is 30% for somebody earning over 15 Lakh & 30 Lakh. 30% slab is bigger burden on the 15 Lakh guy than the 30 Lakh. Also health insurance in India is private & is also taxed at 18 %. The terrible taxation regime & low social welfare investment are the largest contributors to inequality in India.
I think it is also important to distinguish where these people are being interviewed, in a metropolitan area. As we all know there are vast vast disparities in the welfare of the people in say cities versus those stuck working in rural areas through farms/factories.

Being from a lower middle class tribal family, I think the only way to get to the top is through govt services with the privilege of reservation. Other than that, it's really tough. Most Indians I've met can easily converse in atleast two languages. Most middle-class and above families choose to send their kids to English medium schools, so a significant portion of our population has had education in English. Fun fact, we had a house helper who didn't have any formal education (she didn't even know the Earth spun on its own axis and around the sun) who could fluently converse in 7 languages: Santali(her tribal language), Bengali, Hindi, English(she was catholic), Nepali, Bhojpuri & Assamese. She is truly a genius.

I am from China and I feel the gap between rich and poor is basically everywhere round the world. For middle or low class people, maybe education is the best and accessible way to change their life. But the government also need to provide more support like money and resources to make whole society money and job opportunities more balance

But you need to understand something called PPP (purchase power parity). That is to afford a similar lifestyle of eye surgeon in India in the United States. First of all, there are going to be more billionaires the more populated the country is. Having said that, is very cruel that their salaries are that low. They deserve better.
It’s also important to point out india is a very affordable in terms of living standards for all income ranges. It ranks 3rd in terms of PPP. So a salary of 40,000-50,000 INR a month will be a good enough salary for a family of 4 to get by. You can survive on ₹100-200 a day if you are from the lowest strata. Unfortunately if the wealth distribution was better we could afford far more to improve our living conditions like the developed countries uniformly.

Accent is subjective and depends on your surroundings, where you were brought up, English or regional medium, parents etc.
Just for context, what people from other countries need to understand is living cost(food, medication, rent, clothes, etc) in India is way less compared to western countries, so those earning 1 lakh per month ($12000 per month) live very comfortable lives, similar to how those making six figures in western countries live.
My dad's salary is 200$ per month and we have to take care of all expenses in that. I stop working from some years cause of my weakness I had to leave many jobs because of that, now I'm still weak but I can stand properly now so I will start working by end of the month. Need to fix lot of things don't have any savings but I'll make everything stable in next two years.

I think Asian Boss Indian team need to evaluate their interview processes, they ask questions in English and hope for replies in English. But English is not Indians mother tongue. Asian Boss should communicate in local languages and then use subtitles for viewers to understand, just like they are doing in other nations.
I would find it way more difficult to answer such questions in hindi…I’d struggle to build a thought process or to find appropriate words….such questions are easily answered in english….I’m a hindi speaker as well…..why are we still treating english as a foreign language when it’s been officially there since independence….textbooks , exams and every paperwork is done in english….most of the people don’t struggle anymore….not even the older ones….we’re taught english even before we’re taught hindi

This is a interesting perspective, everyone discusses inequality between the mega rich and everyone else but in India as you said the gap between the poor and middle class has been greatly reduced. This is a huge improvement. You see it in big cities where there are barely any beggars now compared to just ten years ago.
Those are some surprisingly healthy attitudes and well articulated views from a lot of different people. Maybe India really does have some massive potential for the future. If you had done the same interviews with random people in the US... I doubt you would have gotten such interesting and diverse opinions.

I think most them are missing a very important point. Its very very difficult for a poor person to go up the ladder. Its easier for a middle class guy because they have those basic tools like education and exposure. But if a guy has never been to be proper school, its very difficult for him to break that cycle.

I’m Mexican and also in Mexico the minimum salary is 320 US dollars per month (around that) but sometimes they don’t even get paid the minimum, in my household the income is 2500 US dollars per month and we are definitely not rich and sometimes we can’t afford a lot of things so I just can imagine how difficult it must be for people with a smaller income

There are too many stereotypes about poverty in India that need to change. Today this country is an unstoppable force. The GDP, infrastructure, education and quality of life in general is improving for all. The change is not restricted to a few. Every generation gets better than the earlier for those willing to put in hard work. In a span of a few generations the poor change their status to reach middle income. The people are intelligent, sincere and are hardworking. The huge population fuels the domestic economy and growth.
These are not enough tho. The lack of jobs, increasing wealth gap, frozen wages and GDP per capita are still huge issues. Prices are only rising while wages remain the same, but every year The National Budget allocates endless benefits to bureaucrats and upper middle class people. If people don't realise it, we won't improve.

I think there is a huge divide between the rich and the poor in India that people rarely address. And I have faced it in real life because I am a kid from a middle class family living in South Delhi. The exposure kids from rich families get, the social circles they hangout in, the perspectives they are exposed to aren't something you would see in families below the rich class in India. Many high skilled workers move to US, UK , Canada etc where they were getting good opportunities . u should have asked them whether their parents were wealthy as well. Most of the rich people I know have acquired their riches in last 1-2 generations. so, the rich/middle class families are expanding in India. Sure, the income disparity is increasing but if a decade back two families were earning 10k and 20k per month and now they are earning 20k and 50k pm(without inflation) it's improvement for both families. This is something people often miss when talking about a poor country turning into a middle-income country. Also there's a big difference between wealth and income. Rich people often tend to be better at finance and savings(This is the reason they are rich in the first place).
The per capita income in big cities is 10x more than the national average and still it's just enough to pay for the basic needs like house, electricity, education, food etc. The reason a lot of Indians these days decide to migrate is not because they don't have food to eat, or they can't survive in India and migrate as a last ditch effort, they do that to earn enough money to enjoy life as well , the salaried class that is.
I worked in construction in dubai. You see Indian businessmen, billionaires who are doing luxury lives there. you also see the construction workers who make less than 500 USD/month who can support his whole family back home. The difference is insane
My household monthly income was around 5k during my engineering and a 50k per month salary (although not as high) felt like a dream to me at that time. Now I'm earning upwards of 50k but it still doesn't seem enough. We really need to maintain a minimalist lifestyle even if our income grows exponentially. Otherwise your spending will just increase linearly with your income. And that's not good. Learnt it the hard way.
Now I earn more than 1 lakh. There was a time when I earned 9k. The happiness I had in those days is not there now. 😊 when salary increases expenses increases proportionally
India must have hella low living expenses if the average person is only earning 3-4k USD per year. This does kind of surprise me given how rapidly developing the country has become. The majority of the wealth are stored in the hands of the few, and this phenomenon is not exclusive to India, it's universal.
That is national per capita income which is largely because there isn't much cash flow in lower strata of society, they are given cheap commodities and services instead of cash by govt. Per capita income in cities is around 19-20k USD. India is relatively cheap ,yes, but it's still the costliest in this region of world.
The cost of living is super low here in India. I make around 16k USD per year and it's enough to pay my student loan, rent, maid servant and all necessities and I still have enough money left for shopping, gym, clubbing, investments and savings.

I could be wrong but in the past, the difference in class and caste was somewhat alleviated by spiritual traditions that motivated some charitable activities and moral ethics. But in current India, this seems less part of society other than some traditional customs of behavior which are not necessarily tied to ethical values. I knew a nice older Indian gentleman who came from the scholar caste, he was a researcher for a medical equipment company, married a Japanese waitress, and both were active members in Japanese traditional flower arrangement organization - they lived a quiet middle class life, she couldn't have children so they were a childless couple, never contributed anything towards the society at large except through their hobby. He had no financial ambition but his privileged background allowed him to afford the highest education and live a life of relative comfort without much struggle. I guess some people are just born lucky.

My mom used to teach in primary school. Her salary was just 5K INR a month(1-2 years ago). While school earned in Lakhs they paid their teachers so little.
Edit: That's not it. apparently they used to wire more money in teachers accounts and later ask them to withdraw some % money & teachers had to give it back in cash. It's not just one or two schools. A whole bunch of them do that.
And government teachers get 90 Thousand per month in Delhi, PGT teacher those who teach 11th and 12th.

The taxation regime in India is meant to help the rich. The highest tax slab is 30% for somebody earning over 15 Lakh & 30 Lakh. 30% slab is bigger burden on the 15 Lakh guy than the 30 Lakh. Being from a lower middle class tribal family, I think the only way to get to the top is through govt services with the privilege of reservation. Other than that, it's really tough. In words people say you can do whatever you want but it's not always possible in reality. A good and strong foundation is required to become a successful businessman. Even if you have the idea, finance is the problem and banks won't give loans to poor people.

If you are not from a strong background, only education can help you. Most Indians I've met can easily converse in atleast two languages. Most middle-class and above families choose to send their kids to English medium schools, so a significant portion of our population has had education in English.
Fun fact, we had a house helper who didn't have any formal education (she didn't even know the Earth spun on its own axis and around the sun) who could fluently converse in 7 languages: Santali(her tribal language), Bengali, Hindi, English(she was catholic), Nepali, Bhojpuri & Assamese. She is truly a genius.

I am from China and I feel the gap between rich and poor is basically everywhere round the world. For middle or low class people, maybe education is the best and accessible way to change their life. But the government also need to provide more support like money and resources to make whole society money and job opportunities more balance

But you need to understand something called PPP (purchase power parity). That is to afford a similar lifestyle of eye surgeon in India in the United States. You need to be making more atleast 150k in USD.

I am impressed by how articulate, thoughtful, generous and humble these interviewees are! I am also shocked at how little an Ophthalmologist in India earns. In Australia they would be on $350k minimum.
The purchasing power of currency also matters. The person was earning 2.5 lakhs per month which is more than enough to have a great lifestyle here.
In india, if your earnings are 30k usd, you can live a great lifestyle because a lot of things are less expensive compared to developed countries.

People from every State have their own little nuances that can affect their English, and I think that's beautiful and shows true diversity. Accent is subjective and depends on your surroundings, where you were brought up, English or regional medium, parents etc.
Just for context, what people from other countries need to understand is living cost(food, medication, rent, clothes, etc) in India is way less compared to western countries, so those earning 1 lakh per month ($12000 per month) live very comfortable lives, similar to how those making six figures in western countries live.

I think Asian Boss Indian team need to evaluate their interview processes, they ask questions in English and hope for replies in English. But English is not Indians mother tongue. Asian Boss should communicate in local languages and then use subtitles for viewers to understand, just like they are doing in other nations.

This is a interesting perspective, everyone discusses inequality between the mega rich and everyone else but in India as you said the gap between the poor and middle class has been greatly reduced. This is a huge improvement. You see it in big cities where there are barely any beggars now compared to just ten years ago.

I’m Mexican and also in Mexico the minimum salary is 320 US dollars per month (around that) but sometimes they don’t even get paid the minimum, in my household the income is 2500 US dollars per month and we are definitely not rich and sometimes we can’t afford a lot of things so I just can imagine how difficult it must be for people with a smaller income

There are too many stereotypes about poverty in India that need to change. Today this country is an unstoppable force. The GDP, infrastructure, education and quality of life in general is improving for all. The change is not restricted to a few. Every generation gets better than the earlier for those willing to put in hard work. In a span of a few generations the poor change their status to reach middle income. The people are intelligent, sincere and are hardworking. The huge population fuels the domestic economy and growth.
These are not enough tho. The lack of jobs, increasing wealth gap, frozen wages and GDP per capita are still huge issues. Prices are only rising while wages remain the same, but every year The National Budget allocates endless benefits to bureaucrats and upper middle class people. If people don't realise it, we won't improve.

I think there is a huge divide between the rich and the poor in India that people rarely address. And I have faced it in real life because I am a kid from a middle class family living in South Delhi. The exposure kids from rich families get, the social circles they hangout in, the perspectives they are exposed to aren't something you would see in families below the rich class in India. Going to the mall for shopping for them is like going to vegetable vendors for us. Besides that, the gatekeeping makes it worse for other people to survive.

We middle class dont say a word when we see rickshaw waala , auto waala , maid working for meager income. Look at the scale ... family might be earning 10 , 20 times of their monthly income. You will get POV from rich people by this way. But saddest part is we equate success with wealth. More wealth means more consumption, more exploitation of resources, climate degradation. Many high skilled workers move to US, UK , Canada etc where they were getting good opportunities . Many entreprenuers move to Dubai , Singapore and other places to setup their business there due to anti-capitalist policies of that time in India . But from 1980s-1990s onwards we started reforming our economy and today we are fastest growing economy . By 2047 , we would become a developed high income country if things goes well .

There is a big difference here in wealth in terms of assets.. there is a huge gap in that but in terms of what they earn and being satisfied, I think most of them are satisfied.. everyone can survive in india .. no one has to sleep empty stomach as large no. Of temples and gurudwaras provide free food ... There is a culture of donating food and cloths too .. if u wanna buy big house and big car than that's a problem ..

All the people who are interviewed in this video are from city and also they are financial stable but reality is that most of indian live in rural area and average salary for a person in rural area is 100,000 ruppes per year (1 US Dollar=78 ruppes) with working 12 hours a day which is quite hard for someone to survive right now.....

the gap between the rich and the poor in all countries is a lot. The world has evolved dramatically in the past 20 years
u should have asked them whether their parents were wealthy as well. Most of the rich people I know have acquired their riches in last 1-2 generations. so, the rich/middle class families are expanding in India. Sure, the income disparity is increasing but if a decade back two families were earning 10k and 20k per month and now they are earning 20k and 50k pm(without inflation) it's improvement for both families. This is something people often miss when talking about a poor country turning into a middle-income country.
Also there's a big difference between wealth and income. Rich people often tend to be better at finance and savings(This is the reason they are rich in the first place).
The per capita income in big cities is 10x more than the national average and still it's just enough to pay for the basic needs like house, electricity, education, food etc. The reason a lot of Indians these days decide to migrate is not because they don't have food to eat, or they can't survive in India and migrate as a last ditch effort, they do that to earn enough money to enjoy life as well , the salaried class that is.
The poor exist to make the rich richer. Cheap labour, cheap food, cheap everything.

I worked in construction in dubai. You see Indian businessmen, billionaires who are doing luxury lives there. you also see the construction workers who make less than 500 USD/month who can support his whole family back home. The difference is insane
My household monthly income was around 5k during my engineering and a 50k per month salary (although not as high) felt like a dream to me at that time. Now I'm earning upwards of 50k but it still doesn't seem enough. We really need to maintain a minimalist lifestyle even if our income grows exponentially. Otherwise your spending will just increase linearly with your income. And that's not good. Learnt it the hard way.
Now I earn more than 1 lakh. There was a time when I earned 9k. The happiness I had in those days is not there now. 😊 when salary increases expenses increases proportionally
India must have hella low living expenses if the average person is only earning 3-4k USD per year. This does kind of surprise me given how rapidly developing the country has become. Even the guy eye surgeon guy isn't making it rain when someone with that profession in the U.S. would be making six figures easily.
The girl who described it as a "flaw" of capitalism is correct, for the most part. It's more like a natural law, the Pareto principle. The majority of the wealth are stored in the hands of the few, and this phenomenon is not exclusive to India, it's universal.
That is national per capita income which is largely because there isn't much cash flow in lower strata of society, they are given cheap commodities and services instead of cash by govt. Per capita income in cities is around 19-20k USD. India is relatively cheap ,yes, but it's still the costliest in this region of world.
The cost of living is super low here in India. I make around 16k USD per year and it's enough to pay my student loan, rent, maid servant and all necessities and I still have enough money left for shopping, gym, clubbing, investments and savings.

I could be wrong but in the past, the difference in class and caste was somewhat alleviated by spiritual traditions that motivated some charitable activities and moral ethics. But in current India, this seems less part of society other than some traditional customs of behavior which are not necessarily tied to ethical values. I knew a nice older Indian gentleman who came from the scholar caste, he was a researcher for a medical equipment company, married a Japanese waitress, and both were active members in Japanese traditional flower arrangement organization - they lived a quiet middle class life, she couldn't have children so they were a childless couple, never contributed anything towards the society at large except through their hobby. He had no financial ambition but his privileged background allowed him to afford the highest education and live a life of relative comfort without much struggle. I guess some people are just born lucky.
