- WTF Happened To This Celebrity? - The JoBlo series that examines the careers of stars and filmmakers who may have fallen out of the spotlight, and tells where they are now!
In the 1980s and 90s, Jean-Claude Van Damme used his impressive martial arts skills to become a major action star with movies like BLOODSPORT, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, John Woo's HARD TARGET, and TIMECOP. But inflated ego, drug addiction and other bad behavior would tarnish JCVD's Hollywood reputation, and he soon found his movies lining the shelves of video stores instead of being seen on the big screen. However, the legend got clean, changed his tune and some of the DTV movies ended up being pretty good! With a new Netflix movie on the way, now's the time to catch up with the Muscles from Brussels and find out “WTF Happened to Jean-Claude Van Damme!”

Mickey Rourke for the Wrestler in Best Actor and Heath Ledger in Best Supporting. His SCENE was great. But those were two grest performances in entire films. So... no. He was not robbed LOL FILARIOUS...
He showed us his acting chops. I'm gonna go watch it now.

For a guy not known for rising to fame on the strength of his thespian awesomeness...he **was** good in "JVCD."
I suspect that being able to deliver the bulk of his dialogue in French certainly helped. No need to feel self-conscious about most of the stuff he has previously been goofed on for: his accent, his somewhat stilted delivery, the fact that the writers were once again forced to conjure up a backstory that would explain away his French accent.
Plus, "JVCD" was an indie "sleeper" movie, not some big, loud, well-financed studio joint with explosions and gunfights and acrobatic spin-kicks. I doubt anyone was stressing a huge load over whether or not it was going to recoup a sizeable budget and turn a tidy profit.
What endeared me most was that in "JCVD," Van Damme was more or less playing himself, and/or the guy that millions of people perceive him to be. That is: a guy who went from being alongside guys like Stallone, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Ah-nuld, Mel Gibson, and Steven Seagal as one of the biggest and most bankable stars in the "Big, Loud, Over-The-Top Action Movie" genre during its heyday to a relative has-been doing direct-to-video shlock and dealing with the occasional lawsuit. For a guy who was never exactly known for being humble and self-effacing, I imagine simply acknowledging that must be tough; doing a movie where he's playing a character that happens to be him, and that unpleasant reality is what drives much of the plot...ouch.
Watching Van Damme's movies in the 90s as a child, I thought they were badass. Watching them now, a lot of them seem goofy and cheesy, but still really fun to watch. I don't care how good or bad a film is, if Van Damme is in it, I'm gonna watch it because I know I'm going to have a great time!
Jean Claud was 1 of the best action stars. No matter what he did. no one can turn him down. He will always be remembered. many around the world loved his movies
Street Fighter was so bad it’s good, I still miss Raul Julia. He did a great job playing M. Bison. R.I.P.
Yeah, on paper, that film, was, total garbage, but, he lifted it to heights, that it surely had no business, ever, approaching.

His monologue toward the end of JCVD is one of my favorite moments ever captured on film.
My dad who passed last year use to play his movies with us when we we're kids. Was sort of our tradition. JCVD reminded me of my dad. Good memories.
My mum loved him so much that I remember for a large portion of the 90s there was a large poster of Van Damme doing the splits was hanging in our house

I spent my entire teens training martial arts and training with weights after watching bloodsport.
I had posters in my room, I trained poses like him. Man, how I wanted to be like him!

Jean Claude Van Johnson is the best thing I've ever seen JCVD in. It was amazing and it made me sad that a second season was never made.
JCVD is for his generation what John Wayne was before him. A star of countless B-movies with big arms (Wayne is said to have used pads) who would always hit the target... who became an icon and an archetype... and who as a seasoned actor was able to show nuances that really touched the hearts of the audience.
JCVD should've got him an Oscar, the monologue scene makes me weep like a little boy it was that damn powerful
I must have watched Hard Target 500 times!! Absolute classic! We would always hire out the VHS and watch them as a family back in the day, kickboxer, bloodsport, double impact... JCVD is an action legend!!!
I rented Hard Target so much the owner of the video shop laughed and told me I could have brought the video several times over!
This was when rental tapes cost over £50 in the U.K.

I grew up watching Van Damme in Nigeria with my siblings, we were crazy about him. I just saw Hard Target again last night on cable, it reminded me of how very athletic he used be back in the day. I will always love him for the fine martial artist and actor he is.
I first remember seeing him as a kid in Lionheart in a theater. That was a great movie! Hard Target was awesome too!
Jean-Claude Van Damme for sure is a real martial artist I’m sick of hearing people say he is not he is one of the truer martial artists that there are he actually got me to get my black belt watching his movies in the 80s made me get up to go to karate I have to thank him for that he will always be an inspiration when it comes to my martial arts

He's one of my favorite action heroes. I can rewatch Bloodsport, Lionheart, Hard Target, Death Warrant, Sudden Death, and my favorite movie of his Double Impact any day. He's also not a bad actor like people will say. He's proven he can be emotional and act and he is funny. He can comedy well as seen in his amazon show which I wish got more episodes.
For some weird reason people tend to think bodybuilders and martial artists are incapable of good acting. Arnold, Sly, and Van Damme ARE good actors. I'll even give some credit to Seagal even though he can't convey emotion too well. His acting ain't as bad as Neil Breen or Megan Fox. Not even close
Double Impact is easily top 5 van damme films

I really enjoyed this retrospective, thanks. Giving him props deserved while calling out the bullsh*t. People don't realize how precarious and backbiting the industry is. Even your "friends" will chuck you under a Volvo bus if you dip in favor or gain more favor than them, more importantly. JCVD hit Hollywood as the total package and wanted to be an actor not an action star. Then people only wanted splits and kicks and stfu from him. On top of bi-polarity and drug issues, I'm proud he survived. Sure he has demons and issues and could have handled things better all around. The business at large is a shit storm of that, it isn't just him. But to be honest and open about it all from his perspective and keep making movies is awesome and shows his strength. I will always watch his classics and enjoy them. And feel as though he inspired the art of film and humans alike. I'm one of them. 💗✨
I got chills watching his street fighter pre battle speech. I am 35 and I still watch it every now and then. Love it. Time cop is my shit too.
Van Damme is a legend. He's a pretty good actor and been in some genuine action classics.

JCVD was my 1990s hero when I was a kid. His acting was much better than many others from that era. IMO we never really got to see him at his greatest but what we did see was definitely great.
JCVD was a bit of a hero growing up, physical specimen, action movie royalty, used to fight with my brother (sparring) trying to decided who was JCVD and who was Bruce Lee.
I always thought JC must've been a real Bruce Lee fan when he went to the States as did Bruce Lee, both to become an actor. Also some of the slomo shots in his early movies like Blood Sport where he pulls these faces whilst fist pumping.. that is SO Bruce Lee.
I remember him in No Retreat, No Surrender and I was like wow I want to see more of this guy.. I kind of cheered for him even tho I knew he wouldn't win.
In this movie he looked crazy badass.

Bloodsport is an 80s Martial Arts gem. The film made Van Damme a household name on the global scale. It amongst my top 5 Van Damme films. My top ten Van Damme films are:
1. Hard Target
2. Lionheart
3.Kickboxer

5.Bloodsport
6.Universal Soldier
7.Double Impact
8.Cyborg
9. Sudden Death
10. Death Warrant
Street Fighter and Double Team are guilty pleasures of mine, it's those so bad it's good type of movies.
Definitely one of the few actors you come to appreciate more over time.

JCVD will never be a washed as has been, Steven Seagal wins that title. And that is the only valid reason to ever have those two names in a sentence. This guy left his homeland to go the USA to chase the American dream and got it all.
I remember me and my brothers renting Bloodsport from our local video store in 1989 for the first time and man we were hooked as young kids. He's right up there with Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Chan in my opinion. Great memories watching his movies growing up.
I know a guy who is obsessed..... *OBSESSED* ....with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
He owns all the movies on all the formats, buys every bit of JCVD merch he can get his hands on (mugs, t-shirts, posters etc), has been to see JCVD perform with his crappy band numerous times, is a very prominent member in the JCVD fan club and 'fan community' online, and even pays hundreds, maybe even thousands of pounds to go to dinner events hosted by Van Damme just to hear him speak and have a chance of meeting him. He's got tons of photos of himself with JCVD, and rates the best day of his life as the day JCVD sent him a personalized video message thanking him for his devotion.
Bear in mind, this guy is in his 40's and is married with 3 kids, yet he has spent his whole life obsessing over an (arguably crap) 80's movie star. The guy literally rates getting a video message from JCVD as being better than the birth of his children!!!

I love that film as well. I actually liked the film and think it's actually good. The scene with Asian guy kicking with the switch blade in his foot was amazing! Also loved the concept of a secret island of presumed dead mercenaries, if I am not mistaken the Simpsons stole that concept for one of their episodes.
Van Damme had a really nice run, its amazing how many great movies he made during his stardom days. The quality of his movies decreased after 90s period when he entered the direct to dvd years, but there was nice surprises like Replicant, The Order, In Hell, Wake of Death, Unisol 3, Assasination games, 6 Bullets, Enemies Closer, The Bouncer, and of cource Expendables 2 and Jean Claude Van Johnson series.
I don't remember the name of it but I remember seeing a pretty cool JCVD movie, he went to prison I think it was Russia, or maybe somewhere close to there, and he was fighting in an underground prison fighting ring, thr warden and guards were betting on the fighters. Don't remember too much else about it, may need to look it up and watch again

As a lifetime martial artist, kickboxing, gym thing, bodybuilding etc, one of my favourite martial artists is this man. Love his films. Great action, great gymnast, great charisma.
JCVD is a real masterpiece. Still remember renting this movie, expecting to watch a regular Van Damme movie, but I was definitely not expecting this. His acting was amazing!
Sudden Death is a fun movie that I'm guilty of watching more times than I can remember. The ONE thing that takes me out of the film every time is that slow, straight edge helicopter drop with him and Powers Boothe making eye contact on the way down. Lol. So ridiculous.

Sudden death was a great romp. No brainer fun. My favourite movie of his has to be Hard Target. just crazy nonstop action. And great actors too. Nowhere to run was rudely ridiculed too. I liked that more than a lot of people. And let's not forget about Time Cop.

I grew up watching JCVD in movies and loved him as Ana action star. Then I got older and always wondered what happened. I just watched the film JCVD two days ago and it broke me. You can literally see all the talent, pain, acting skill, and vulnerability of a man who's been through hell and back. Bravo.

I think maybe with the exception of Bruce Lee Jean-Claude was the guy that got the most Westerners into Martial Arts. Those guys grew up to be your local gym / dojo instructor.

Everyone gets passed their best in anything they shine in. He was a juggernaut of action films for around 2 decades. Excellent skills for cinema in his day.
Everyone talks about bloodsport, kickboxer, etc... but his best acting by far, was in Wake of death. It was a show of acting skills rather than his high kicking skills. His acting was up there with the best of them in that one.
I think He deserves an Oscar for JCVD too. He put so much energy in all his movies, love these ones in order, lion heart, universal soldier, blood sport, kickboxer and cyborg.
Every time I saw/see a new Van Damme movie I think to myself 'wait for it... Wait for it... THERE IT IS! The Van Damme kick!'. Makes me smile every time.

I saw him a few years ago when he came to Australia for an interview tour. He was super-awkward for the most of it and didn't really want to talk about himself. He seems like he wanted to connect with his fans but didn't know how. Or maybe he's not great at public speaking. When someone asked him about fitness and training he turned in a charming, warm, engaging person. He totally transformed as that's clearly where his passion. This is the person his loved ones probably see and that guy seemed great.
He is pretty active on facebook he responds pretty frequently with fans.

To me, JCVD is THE proof of the fact we all have heard of: NOT GIVING UP
even as a kid in the 80s, I always ,ALWAYS admire him for his tenacity and his talents.
Even he took drugs and has his ups and downs, he been one of those rare actors I, dare say, fanboy.
As long he lives and breaths, he will always be my top 5 favorite actor

I've been a huge fan of his since I organzied my apartment complex's kumite when I was 8 years old and had every kid in the neighborhood sparring in the park but had never seen Lionheart so I paused this video, watched it... and shed manly tears. What a masterpiece.
Lionheart is my favourite JCVD film and one of my favourite films in general. Isn't it wonderful!
Great video. I never realized how despite the ups and downs he has always stayed in pretty good shape, even Sly & Arnold would let themselves go physically over the years.
He is one of my favourite actor, when I was a kid I used to watch all his classics and Lion Heart is just amazing, that scene at the end still gets me
What grabbed my attention in Cyborg was the horrific creature effects for the Cyborg Woman. Just Like Terminator. After That I totally loved Nemesis. This kind of stuff looked great on VHS.

I really admire JCVD. From watching Kickboxer as a teenager to things like The Boxer or JCVD. I respect the man, even if his a difficult man.
Loved watching his movies in the 90's, not many of them aged very well though lol. Still, lots of good memories of watching these movies as a youngster (especially Bloodsport). Great video!

I worked on Maximum Risk for a few days and he was very professional on set, considering he was struggling with the drug problem at the time (he was in rehab for a period not long afterwards). He made some minor "questionable" decisions off set while here (Toronto). Thanks for the movies JCVD, and for humoring me for the sake of my birthday that year (95').

Putting aside his being a kick ass fighter, he's such an underrated actor. His performances in (for example) Bloodsport and Lionheart are amazing.
