Toothpaste/Mouthwash
Ingredients:
Flouride
Fluoride makes the enamel of your teeth harder and more resistant to acid wear - fluoride only makes up about 0.15% of most toothpastes, although prescription-strength fluoride toothpastes contain more than 1% of fluoride
Study intfound that sodium fluoride (often used in toothpaste) can increase plasma concentrations of insulin
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
Sweeteners
Most toothpastes contain saccharin, aspartame, or xylitol to add a bit of sweetness
As we know, there’s some research showing that a sweet taste may trigger an insulin response
Study in the journal Appetite found saccharin increased plasma insulin concentrations (colgate uses saccharin in its formula)
Note on Thickeners:
Carrageenan is a common thickener added to toothpastes
Mouthwash
Uses sodium fluoride and and saccharin as well
Vitamins
Softgel Vitamins
No, they contain oils with caloric values
Non-softgel Vitamins (Water Soluble)
Study from = had subjects fast with and without vitamins C & E and found that there was a 2.7% increase in t expression in the non-vitamins group
But no change in expression were found in those who took daily oral supplements of Vitamin C and E because the cells were relatively sheltered from experiencing any oxidative stress
SIRT3 is a gene that is part of a pathway that works to prevent free radical production and improve cellular repair processes
hdsa.org/wp-content/uploads/2...
Xylitol/Erythritol
There’s conflicting reports about whether or not Xylitol affects insulin or blood glucose, but a study in Diabetologica found that, in human subjects, xylitol taken by mouth in solution as a single 30 g dose caused no rise in plasma insulin concentration but did produce a minimal rise in blood glucose
link.springer.com/article/10....
Additionally, often processed from corn, and often genetically modified.
Additionally, since it’s not metabolized and broken down in the stomach like other sweeteners so it reaches parts of the intestines that regular sugar wouldn’t
Since it has the ability to kill many strains of bacteria including streptococcus mutans, which is one of the reasons it is beneficial for dental health, it may also negatively affect gut bacteria
Erythritol
Erythritol did not affect serum levels of glucose, insulin or other serum constituents. More than 90% of ingested erythritol was readily absorbed and excreted in urine without degradation. This fact suggests that available energy of erythritol in human is less than 1.7 kJ/g (0.4 kcal/g).
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8...
The downside here is that erythritol will still stimulate digestive enzymes, technically breaking a fasting for those doing it for longevity purposes
Coconut Water
Per ounce, most unflavored coconut water contains 5.45 calories, 1.3 grams of sugar, 61 milligrams of potassium, and 5.45 milligrams of sodium
Also contains a small amount of vitamin C per serving
BCAAs
A study from t looked at the effects of BCAA supplementation on plasma concentrations of free amino acids, insulin, and energy substrates in a group of men aged 22-25
Participants partook in an overnight fast and researchers found that plasma insulin levels spiked after BCAA ingestion
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
Additionally, a study in the Journal of Diabetes found that leucine activates mTOR signaling - leucine has an affinity for mTOR
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
So, I know there’s going to be negativity on this video because it is things that could break a fast, but please do know that I did this video because people continually ask for it. That’s part of my mission here, helping bring out the content that people ask for.
So don’t cast a bunch of negativity energy because I produced this video. I mention in the video that all of these things could be a bit extreme, but it’s your prerogative if you want to take it this far.
I take potassium chloride, black coffee, sea salt and apple cider vinegar as a pre work out. Will this break my fast? Great video!
Thomas DeLauer does acetyl L-carnitine break a fast
Well, there's no need to shoot the messenger, lol. Thanks for the info.
Tammy Fieldgate nope!
I agree with Sora Fora! You've been starting your videos off concerned with the negative comments that don't exist yet. Don't manifest them, or expect them. Don't be so upset if everyone doesn't agree with you, or by trools. Stay positive and start your videos in a positive spin, not a negative one. ☺️
1- Toothpaste and Mouthwash
2- Vitamins
3- Coconut Water
4- BCAA
5- Food in your teeth
Thanks
Thx because he was talking too much lol
I find this ridiculous
Oh cool, because I came here for answers without context and information.
Ryan Abdulfattah You forgot to add #3 Xylitol and erythritol ...food in your teeth was the bonus
Goodness... if you have been fasting while doing these things, and seeing results, then continue to do what works for you! Take the info for what it is - info. No need to overcomplicate your life!
It's not information. It's opinion from someone who is not a doctor or scientist. This guy finds ridiculous studies and "information" then builds videos around them without double checking or even thinking about it properly, sometimes contradicting other videos he's done previously.
@@slow-moe3518 I agree that there is often contradiction. However, Thomas is also big on saying take it with a grain of salt. My point is, whether you find it medically sound or not, it shouldn't throw people out of wack with regards to their already established fasting regimen. I'm a proponent of water only or dry fasting myself - keep it simple, is all.
@@slow-moe3518 He seems to do thorough research, and obviously he is doing something right going by his physique.
@@clintc9813 of course, that's the sells pitch. Presentation is everything. Who would listen to a guy about fasting if he is 300 pounds with liver spots.
Why did you watch this video? You probably searched it yourself. Don’t complicate things😂😂😂
Eating a spider in your sleep can break a fast
Yeah, but you might get powers from it, so it's really a trade off.
Solution : dont be a mouth breather and you wont be a spider eater xD
TheNew Brazy999 what if it goes up your nose lol?
Swallow bacteria in your mouth . . . break a fast. I don't know . . . I'm dubious.
Lol
When you're cycling and a bug flies into your mouth

Thanks for the info as always Thomas. Definitely cleared some doubts!
Thanks Thomas! Just ordered my perfect Keto bundle! Keep you peoples bundle deals coming!
Thomas, Thank you so much for this video! I truly have been wondering about vitamins and brushing teeth breaking a fast. You’re the first person I’ve seen to answer this question.
Thank you Thomas for taking the time to put out your informative videos. Well Appreciated. Look forward too many more.
Stay tuned!
I'm not going to stop brushing my teeth lol
I was wondering about this very thing just yesterday, and then this video popped into my suggested video feed. Thomas is on top of all the details.
I love the science that Thomas provides even though I don't have his scientific mind but what I really love is all the technical details he provides!!! I do have the mind of a lawyer so technicalities are my thing!!! Keep the science and TECHNICALITIES coming thomas!!!
DeLauer the type of dude to not swallow his saliva to prevent insulin spikes
Thank you! I've been waiting for this for a while.
I spat out my double chocolate chip pancake with maple syrup while watching this
Well that’s just wasteful
LOL
it's ok.. ketosis mimics fasting!
Don't inhale pollen while fasting. Got it. ;)
Hello Mr. Thomas! So currently I am doing a 23:1 fast, its day 3, and its going extremely well so far, results are already being noticed.
I have narrowed all my past failures down, due to a lack of education, on how and what I should be eating. Honestly it wasn't until I fully committed myself back to Orthodox Christianity that magically I found this channel, which is no doubt a God Send.
I have been TORTURED by the unhappiness with my body, literally ever since I can remember, and I am 32 years old now.
The main Goal here is to get as Shredded as possible as quickly as possible. I currently am on a non meat regimen until Great Lent Ends April 28th, but thank God for Thrive Market and all other similar companies.
Thank you Thomas for all you do, and I greatly look forward to the continue progression of this journey we are on!
Best of luck!
Thank you so much Thomas! You have been my Guru from the start of my Keto/IMF lifestyle for 4 years now! Bravo! 🥰👏🏻♥️
Another excellent vid. Thanks so much. 😎👍
Bro that's a stretch. You're not consuming more fast breaking substance with toothpaste than you are with coffee..
damn. Wish your video came out 20 minutes ago before I brushed my teeth. Great info as always!
Thanks s ton again Thomas for all that info. Appreciate your efforts in always making sense scientifically and giving us a headsup on the dos and donts with fasting .
You’re welcome!
Finally! Thanks for letting us know about the toothpaste. When you get a chance can you still do another one about gums and mints? And suggest which ones are ok during a fast. You’re awesome as always! Peace
The smell of fresh baked cookies WILL brake your fasting
Proof
break
@@Lozie82 😆😆👍
What about seeing a tv commercial that show fresh baked cookies, the nervous system registers it you know
so basically its better to brush your teeth right after your meal so your fasted period isn't interrupted
SDarkOmenS yeah but brushing to soon can wear out your enamel. They usually recommend to wait about 30 minutes.
What toothpaste should I use to not break it
I have been doing intermittent fast for about the past 2 months since watching your video. I have dropped over 23lbs. I was just wondering about toothpaste and mouth wash last night. This is great stuff, I just ordered Tom's flouride free toothpaste. You explain everything so well. Thank you!
Thanks. Good info as always Thomas. I am coming off of a 4 day extended health/preventative-maintenance fast in a few more hours. I was not sure about Vitamin C and took one this morning along with my electrolytes and fluids. Been tossing a coin on that one for a long time. Hope it did not nullify me too much. My GKI Glucose-Ketone-Index is super autophagic right at 1.0! Dumped 3 lbs of pure fat and about 3 pounds of retained water too. Down at 11% BF trying to get the full six pack. Will feed-up this afternoon to swing back anabolic and hit the gym with a new LBM muscle gain timed catabolic phase to pack on more mass. Love the IF Keto lifestyle - NEVER hungry and always full of energy - and even still packing on muscle at the same time I am losing fat - all as a senior citizen. Never been so strong and healthy in my entire life. The young guys freak out when they see how much weight I can lift in the gym. Heard one comment "How the hell do these small frame guys with no huge muscle mass lift so much $%#!*$G weight?!. Loving it... :D
I’m rowdy but I’ve also grown physically and mentally thanks to the knowledge you spread.
Hey this was helpful. Next time I start my fast I’ll make sure to just not brush ny teeth lmao. I’ll hold my hand over my mouth when I talk close to people or something.
Thanks TD, appreciate it.
I have wondered about several of these! Thought I was being a little extreme, but I guess I wasn’t! Glad he addressed them.
I guess oil pulling will break your fast? Great info, Thomass. thank you.
What about flouride in your tap water that doesnt get filtered in the Brita?
Fluoride will dissipate out of water in a few hours. Just leave your water in the fridge or on the counter for awhile.
Don't you mean chlorine will dissipate out of water by letting it stand for a few hours?
I had NOOOO idea. This was super interesting. Thanks.
Bro ur really doing me in with all this info. Loing this, thinking of a career shift, like seriously. Keep up the gr8 work! Ur kids will be proud someday.
I once carelessly broke my fast with a piece of cuticle bit off from my finger.
That’s just irresponsible
Wait, so if your tap water has flouride, is that also breaking a fast ?! 😯
I believe so. Better to do you research and buy a working filter. I use Zero Water water filter. Anybody have experience with this too?
Fluoride is terrible for you, it's best to filter it out
Thank you
Thank you for the awesome videos mate ! Been following your channel for quite a bit . In relation to this video, I have a concerning question surrounding fasting which not much resources can be found on the internet
- will vaping break a fast? (smoking e-cigarette )
hope you could answer my concern , thanks !
Great! So I’ve been breaking my water fast every morning with the damn toothpaste for the past 4 days already?!🤦🏻♀️
HydnBB2 but if it’s not breaking your fast by testing your keto levels
Then I wouldn’t worry about it.
Hi Thomas, you mentioned Fluoride spikes insullin, does that mean the drinking water from the tap (in Sydney contains 1.043mg/L Fluoride) will also spike insulin?
Yes.
@@ichbinich1775 how about 1.00 ppm?
I real doctor said no so
Hi Thomas! First of all, great job here. I really appreciate what you are doing here for free and how you mix in the facts of science based data. And I can even catch up with your speed in talking most of the time (German is my mother tongue). I am watching lots of your videos as I am doing IF on almost daily basis for 4 months now and once a week even 36 hours of fast. What I learned from you is do get in days with eating more and might just go for a 12 hours break, otherwise its hard to catch up with all the calories when doing sports 5-7 times a week (strength & cardio). Now to my question (finally ...): When I am going for a 72 hour fast (water only) every two to three months, what about the sport during these three days of fasting? Nothing at all? Or normal? Or maybe just cardio with low intensity? Or HIIT just because its even more weird during a fast? Looking forward to your answer mate (and thanks again). All the best from Graz, Austria (Hometown of Arnold Schwarzenegger).
KNOWLEGE IS IMPORTANT. THANK YOU THOMAS
Hey Tom I'm just curious did you start this channel because you were sharing your knowledge with people you care about and they were like "DUDE I DONT WANT TO BE LECTURED"? I try to spread this knowledge and I always get the eye roll, lmk I'm curious.
Great video Thomas.
What about electrolytes?
Thanks!
Electrolytes have no calories and have no effect on blood glucose or insulin. You need them specifically while fasting or you'll get sick and dehydrated, which will make your fast a waste of time.
@@decolonizeEverywhere thank you, Cheryl
@@isaiasguilarte when fasting, you lose water and with it you lose minerals that you need.
Thomas your videos are very informative. It would be great if you make a video on the relation between eating eggs and prostate cancer. You are one of the few guys I trust. Thanks.
I’ll look into it
Thanks Thomas! Some of these comments are freaking gems! 🤣 But it doesn't take away from the knowledge bombs!!
So entertaining
Thomas. I've always been a fan of your videos as they present facts and figures that are evidence based. I'm a 4th year dental student about to graduate and it bothers me that you even mention that fluoride gets bad press and only "some toothpastes contain fluoride". This is factually incorrect. Most, if not all, name brand toothpastes contain some sort of fluoride compound. It's what prevents the disease of caries, or cavities as referred in lay, and its use in toothpaste as well as drinking water has been touted as one of the biggest achievements in the betterment of human health, along with vaccines and birth control. Yes, the science may exist to say fluoride can have a minor spike in insulin, but please don't be an advocate for swaying people off of toothpaste with fluoride simply to stay within their fast. On top of this, MOST mouthwashes actually don't contain fluoride, which is what strengthens your enamel and prevents cavities, but rather compounds to kill germs which essentially is a glorified way to freshen your breath. Lastly, when you brush your teeth or use mouthwash, you should not be swallowing it. You spit and rinse with water. The content of fluoride in most toothpastes is only about .25% fluoride. The minor minor minor residual toothpaste left after spitting and rinsing would have little to no effect on your insulin, I can guarantee that. I'm not making this comment to say you're telling people not to use fluoride. The point is that when you mention the facts around the insulin spike associated with fluoride, a majority of people that are heavily dedicated to IF will take it very seriously and assume that an alternative, like charcoal toothpaste, is comparable. And it's simply NOT. Thanks for the content, this one just got to me since it's literally the science I'm taught and research every day.
is this true? Cuz i wanna brush my teeth
NorseGodx Verifiably true
@@Touchme1G Nice comment, thanks for posting.
"The minor minor minor residual toothpaste left after spitting and rinsing would have little to no effect on your insulin, I can guarantee that."
How can you guarantee it? Im truly interested and didnt find any specific study about that...
Forgot to mention the study was done on rats to simulate chronic high levels of fluoride ingestion.
what about fluoride in water? I live in Australia where all our water has fluoride, even our bottled water. Am I breaking my fast just by drinking water?
So there is fluoride in the water... Can tap water break a fast?
I was wondering the same thing
I was also asking myself about that because there is no way im buying that many bottles of water
Oooh! Good point!
I wanna know too
Kevin King real water is full of minerals.
Thomas! Thank you for another awesome video! I hope people can see past their internal attachments to the potential fast brakers and see the value provided here!
One question though, regarding BCAAs:
Would you recommend taking them during a fasted work out to prevent muscle loss? Perhaps with 20g carbs as a TKD protocol?
I have seen others advocate this and would love to know your thoughts/experience.
You the man Thomas! Thanks again brother 👊
thank you!!!!
So, in the morning, how do I make my breath fresh and my teeth clean without breaking my fast?
Charcoal toothpaste
In like 10 other videos you’ve straight up recommended fish oil pills while on a fast to increase benefits of fasting and inflammation reduction.
Thanks for this great video! What about sucralose?
Another great video Thomas. Just three more items I’m curious about, despite my weight loss not being affected: coconut vinegar with the mother, lemon water (whole Meyer lemon steeped in hot water) and organic stevia (no methane or hexane). Since it has had zero affect on my weight loss, I’m more concerned about the autophagy. Thanks in advance.
What about fluoride in tap water?
LMFAO
That’s what I’m sayin
That’s why you need to filter your water with a good filter that takes out fluoride you should never even drink tap water straight from tap bad for your health my boi lovey boi I love you sweetie heart love

Vicz Somers who has food in their teeth? Don’t they brush?
christine robinson Lol, that’s a fair point. Then again, who always brushes after every snack, or even right after a meal. You may finish your eating window and only brush a couple of hours after, which according to this video may in itself break a fast.
I love it when people watch the video and puts the list in their comments. Makes watching video so much easier.

Quick question: does adding some 1/2 small spoon of cacao (unsweetened obviously) breaks our morning fast?
Thanks again for all this great insight
Good info Thomas, bottom line for me though is...”Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Being on keto and keeping to just two meals a day, has kept me in a healthy weight in over two years. This way of living has been able to liberate me from obsessing over food. Thank you so much for all you do. ❤️

How about Thyroid meds in the morning would that because its a hormone?
Don't skip thyroid meds. No matter what!! My daughter's endo told me about a woman who had been a top lawyer who quit her thyroid meds. She' s now incapable of the most mundane things and can no longer work at all.If it's intermittent fasting (eg16:8, 20:4) though, you could take meds half an hour before breaking your fast.

I feel like avoiding anything and everything that may have a tiny effect on your fasted state is getting close to eating disorder territory
Tyler Elmergreen like an obsession.
Eating snot from nose will break it too
Very interesting video, as always! Quick question: do you know anyone who does have a similar channel about nutrition/keto/intermittent fasting bringing in scientific evidence like you? I live in Spain, and most people I know can't follow fast spoken English. Trying to spread the word...
I have a question about the timing of the meal that breaks your fast, in relation to the second, bigger meal. I've been doing 18/6 fasting three times a week (in addition to keto), and am loving it. I normally break my fast with a pea protein shake with almond milk, MCT oil, and a little cold brew coffee for flavor. Per your suggestions, I'll have a "real" meal about an hour later - usually an egg salad with lots of veggies and an avocado. Should I be worrying about my insulin spiking, settling down, and then spiking again with the second meal? I know you and Dr. Berg are proponents of not eating too frequently, and wondered if this was an exception.
Am I gonna break my fast with magnesium?
Got it! Clear as mud... lol... So... brush your teeth, take your vitamins, coconut water, Erythritol/Xylitol all during the eating window. Oh and make sure you brush your teeth super super well before the fast. I got this! 😂😂😂
Hi Thomas. Thank you for the valuable information. I wanted to find out two things if you could please answer them :
1) I usually do a 20:4 fast 5 times a week and 18:6 fast 2 times a week with keto diet in my feeding window. Can I take BCAA during eating window ? I workout in fasted state when I only take water but without BCAA at all I feel that I have a lot more soreness after heavy workout than I use to have when I was taking BCAA.
2) Are quest nutrition bar ok to eat in Keto diet. They contain 3g of net carbs and I think I can easily integrate this in my keto diet because I am usually consuming around 13 to 18 g carbs every day. I am not living in US so no keto bars are available here.
Thanks.
Was wondering about brushing my teeth and fasting for a while- couldn’t find an answer to that. Thank you for the video! Now I know 👍
Why I came lol
Will i break my fast if I rinse with a flouride mouthwash and spit it out?
Usually it is possible to break your fast because some of the liquid will eventually get absorbed.
Yes.
Thomas Delauer opens another can of worms. Lol. 👍
I actually found this video informative because water here in England is fluoridated.. Damn It..
I love worms and don’t think they should be in cans
I found it a bit hilarious but every good. Thank you sir
You’re very welcome
We don’t hate you we love your scientific explanations and dedication to helping us stay in Ketosis!
dude i just did a four day fast and for the first 3 days my breath smelled like ammonia and death
Well that’s gross
Its normal
I have a question. Once I accidentally break a fast, should I continue to fast or is it too late to jump back on the benefits of a fast. How long does it take to be back in the fasted state .
It'll take a few hours depending on exactly how spiked your insulin got. Continue on fasting, you'll still probably get some hours of true fasting in before your first meal, after your insulin goes back down. Usually small things that accidentally break your fast, such as those listed in this video, won't make way too much of a difference. Things like toothpaste, sugar replacements, BCAA, etc may have a very small insulin effect, but it is negligible and often won't even be enough to kick you out of the fast. If it does it will only be short term and you will return to normal shortly. Just don't eat anything with a lot of calories or sugar in it during your fast, obviously.
Wow! I was wondering what knocked me out of ketosis yesterday while I was fasting. It was the first time I used Colgate toothpaste. I usually use Jason brand. That was the only thing different. Thanks for the info
@Thomas DeLauer Hiya, im a bodybuilder. Always been on a carbohydrate rich diet since I have always been told carbs are important for training etc. I want to start keto, but in a caloric surplus. Will it be possible for me to gain muscle mass this way? I just cant seem to find an answer.. Thanks.

Awesome. This one might actually get people to buy toothpaste and mouthwash without the neurotoxins that fasting works to remove from their body. There's some irony for you.
Hello Thomas. I know you've done a video about using the sauna post workout before, but could you give us a little bit more insight, or at least your thoughts, on using either ice baths, cold showers, or even cryogenic Chambers for recovery, and how they compare 2 using a sauna? Still enjoying all of your content, as per usual. Thank you for what you do!
Seems like a good idea for a video
its interesting that you mention Fluoride as in Australia, it is added to the mains water; so, really people can fast using tap water in Australia
Slowly going towards ocd
too much caffeine. Lol
I do wash my hands a lot
Well I’m still going to brush and use mouthwash. This weight I lost on omad must be fake.
Good information i never heard about flouride effect on insulin
Thanks for this video, very informative! I haven't found a toothpaste without floride in a common supermarket (living in Austria). But if I don't swallow the toothpaste insulin should not spike, right?
Also, does my own blood break a fast? My tooth of wisdom was extracted and my gum bleeds a bit after brushing my teeth - that is how I got the idea, not that I would drink it regularly...
Does blood pressure medication break the fast?
Green tea and coffee has antioxidants. Are those ok?
Good point
It seems ok, he explains it in another video ;)
He didnt say anything about the antioxidants in that video if you are referring to the drinks and sweeteners video. This video he does speak of antioxidants causing a problem.
there, the contradiction, let's have a greater common sense to distinguish between sellers and healers (it depends, you want it for metabolic (ok) or longevity reasons (not ok))
This was my same question! Many contradictions out there. He mentioned earlier in another video coffee n green tea are ok but they do contain antioxidants! How come now he's saying it could stop autophagy! Weird
talking about anti-oxidants, how about alpha lipoic acid, which I have to take due to a medical problem with my nerves? I was adviced to take them on an empty stomach? Thank you very much for your answer!
Yo Thomas, love your vids, question, does the chew and spit method break a fast. Yes, I am aware of the disorder that exists from it, it's not something I like to do or do often, but I work at a restaurant and sometimes I need to taste stuff. Will this elicit somewhat of the same reaction like gum, where I'm fine from a metabolic standpoint, or is this just a complete no go?
