0:51 Metal Slug were a bunch of arcade games, they appeared sort of in the late stages of arcades, the first one releasing in 1996 (which I mean... Isn't the latest but IMO it's not in the height of the arcades either). There were 7 games released for arcades (one of them being an enhanced version of the second game), the last one, 6, appearing in 2006 (it's the only one I've never seen in an arcade). Then the last game, 7, was released for the DS. They got ported to a bunch of systems over the years because in the late 90s they were super popular (it's one of the franchise that always had at least one game in every arcade I ever went and if you ask people my generation what their favourite arcade was growing up, I think Metal Slug will be up there as the most common response). It's had some spin offs over the years but none of them have been, as far as I know, particularly popular. During the PS2 era they tried to turn them into 3D games but the one they did was apparently terrible, saw no success, and they never tried it again. But that's about the only exclusive Metal Slug the PS2 had (it had ports of some of the arcade games tho), so I don't really know where you read the relation between that console and this franchise.
This game is reminding me a lot of Into the Breach. If you've never played it I heavily recommend it. It's tricky at first, but when it clicks it'll make you feel really smart.
I played the arcade games in time to time while waiting for pizza or something in my college town. I always enjoyed the arcade version… This looks pretty cool. The artwork is spot on and mummies always really sucked in the arcade game too, so I guess they were consistent there… I’ll probably, wait for a sale on this one, but I’ll definitely plan in someday.
this has been on my wishlist since it was announced at the game awards 2 years ago. Finally it is here, so I will be playing this tonight while I stress over the election.
Excited that it finally coming out and that you are covering it. I tried to play the demo on steam deck but unfortunately the demo wasn’t tuned for steam deck control meaning that you need to use mouse point and click. Hopefully they fixed this since this is supposed to be to be available for switch. Can you also comment about the cover system and if it annoying that it doesn’t matter which side of the cover you are at. Also comment about if on higher floor can you shoot down or up to different floor/level. Looking forward to your full review
Even more surprising than mort not having played metal slug is that there is a turned based tactics metal slug :D :D Btw I remember playing those and loving them... lore/story wise... I didn't even knew there was such a thing in metal slug :P
Enjoy! The games can be pretty brutal but keep in mind they were arcade games designed to drain pockets of quarters. Some of the best pixel art of all time too!
I used to play Metal Gear Slug only when in arcades. One time I had gone so far in the game that the arcade owner gave me a bunch of tokens for free and started watching the game. One of the produest moments of my childhood
I can’t remember if you ever reviewed it but 2018‘s Battletech from HBS, a.k.a. the Mechwarrior tactics game, also used a movement-based defence, where the farther you moved on your turn, the harder it was for the enemy to hit you. So, it’s not really a novel concept.
Nice! For some reason I didn't expect the whole Ikari Team to be included this time, I guess they're officially mainstays now. Also, older titles but I would suggest checking out Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4 for the channel. Pretty unique tactics games, the mention of team members in range joining for an attack reminded me of those games.
Metal Slug is an SNK series yeah? I grew up after the heyday of the Arcade era and SNKs peak, so for me Metal Slug and many SNK stuff are like mystical artifacts from the before times. I've always been curious about it so I might pick this up when i have the money.
I don't think there's much lore to these games. It's known more for its expressive pixel art and fun run-and-gun gameplay than anything else. If the pixel art was bad, it wouldn't be a good Metal Slug game.
I like Rogue Likes sometimes, but I did not want this game to be one. Never did I want that out of a Metal Slug game, even if it is a spin-off/side game. Gonna have to skip on this one.
@@tyrael43 I know, it's still an snk game. street fighter 4 was made by dimps, but it's still a capcom game. Just because there is a different developer doesn't mean anything. That's like saying Doom and Dishonored aren't a Bethesda games.
I like this pivot for the series. The sidescrollers are so fun to look at but hard for me to play, so putting this artstyle into this style of game is great. Hopefully it ends up being worth it for us and them.
@@finnmarr-heenan2397 Yeah. And I get that was the point of arcade games, because they were made to make money out of people. Still, really looking forward to give this a try.
Pretty much in the same boat w.r.t. Metal Slug and what-has-come-before; mainly because the prior stuff was not my bag for gameplay. While this is something closer to what's I'd consider, the impressions was helpful to get some early flavor of concerns. The bouncy sprite thing, as always, is a yellow flag but at least the bouncy is not in sync; but this was known. "Limited in scope" is a concern. "Rogue lite/like/ick" repeatability / repetition / kindapointless is a major concern. The tactical mechanics look pretty solid though, and standard fare in my lib. So that's good. However, since I now grok that impressions vids means a full review is planned Soon™ I'm looking forward to the full coverage.
Seems my impatience strikes again. Had this on my wishlist since I first found out about it and when it released a little while ago, I bought it without thinking. Haven't played it yet, but so far despite some concerns you mentioned (the repeating mission types being a major one), I'm not too worried. I hope those technical issues you mentioned will get ironed out (they most likely will be) and I will definitely check out your review when it comes out.
This game hits every button for me. I love how it feels like everything is small scale (2 to 3 damage attacks), until you figure out how to really take advantage of the system. Once I got rolling, I did 48 damage to a boss on turn 3. I know I am still playing on casual difficulty, which is a bit scary. Because the first boss wasn't as easy and I just eked out that win. But I like how the game just lets you do so much with seemingly so little.
Metal Slug has more self-references and casual incidental comedy per minute than Animaniacs. That's a large part of why a run and gun arcade shooter released on hardware that was already obsolete in the mid-90s spawned a franchise and an adoring fanbase.
visually it's exactly like in old arcade games which makes this tactical switch painful to watch to me it's absolute NO and if they wanted to use universe then at least they could have make more visual changes instead of pretending like it's a continuation of classic normally i would suggest turning any universe into interesting rpg but this time i will make an exception and vote for FPS
Played this during Steam Next Fest and enjoyed it a lot. Despite being turn-based, it translated the fast paced bullet hell shoot 'em up gameplay from the original games into a totally new design very well. The art is charming. And it being a rogue like makes for pretty good replayability, even though sometimes difficulty spikes and unfair RNG's can ruin a run.
Thanks for the video. This is my first exposure to the series. I thought it was a satire of the Metal Gear Solid series. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
it's good that you're unfamiliar with the franchise as it allows you to be much more objective in discussing it. my personal reaction to discovering that there was a pitch-perfect Metal Slug tactical roguelike was to scream like a five-year-old on Christmas day loud and long enough to wake my neighbours.

This video reminded me of Into the Breach, I wasn't that interested until now
It’s made by the same team. Or so I heard, back when it was being announced
@@Grnvolpe A very quick google search tells you it isn't.
@@Grnvolpe No, different teams. MST is Leikir Studios, probably best known for Rogue Lords. Into the Breach is Subset Games, who did FTL.

Looks awesome. will probably pick it up. Hopefully runs well on steam deck.
The game looks amazing but being roguelike is a dealbreaker for me. Why does everything gotta be rogue like these days?
Same way I feel about pixel, voxel, souls-like, FPS shooter etc etc
Could be worse, could be a deck builder 😅
Cause rogue is the best
Exactly my feeling as well, whenever I see “roguelite” I ignore it 😢
Roguelike seems to me to vibe well with a series born from arcade games. What other mechanics or genres do you think would be better suited?
❤ I love this! Thank you! So excited for this game
Ill be giving this a go eventually. Im a massive fan of the Metal Slug series and also enjoy a nice tactics game as well.
Metal slug having way more game then you expect is actually very classic Metal Slug
