Amazing art made accessible - so glad you appeared in my feed
Great video - truly enjoyed your explanation on everything. Thank you!
Thanks for showing us how to paint rocks and yours is more beautiful than the picture. I enjoyed watching your painting. Thanks a lot.
Thank you!
This series is so delightful.
I'm glad you enjoy it!
Starting my fifth version of your fabulous demo…totally obsessed…..better than Netflix xx thanks again 💕
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Gorgeous work!! And a very helpful tutorial!
I can’t imagine the time and well considered planning that has gone into this detailed instructive lesson plan. Thank you for this work. I truly appreciate your dedication towards demystifying this art form for those of us who are beginners.
I appreciate the great comment violet! As a beginner, I think it's important to take the time to learn a few of the fundamentals of watercolor. It will pay great rewards and avoid some frustration along the way.
I have been mesmerized by watching this out of the world, 3 sessions of teaching how to approach the watercolor painting of river rocks.
I find no words enough to praise your talent and humble way of spreading your knowledge. Many, many thanks.
I feel that I find light to cross the long tunnel of understanding the art of watercolor painting.
I will follow your path, any time it crosses my rocky road.
Thanks Rick, be safe and healthy, as well as all in your family.
Also, I would love to repeat what you said, more than paintings rocks is the interpretation of good techniques of how to deal with this art.
Thanks
Absolutely love it 🤩
Really enjoyed this demo! I have always painted layers of washes then layers of masking, your method of washes over the white will be so much easier!!!
Thanks for commenting Sherry!
I love your teaching style. Very clear, very informative! There are many wonderful artists out there BUT... that doesn’t mean they can teach. You are a true teacher and artist. Your teaching style and step by step videos are the best. Thank you Rick.
Thank you Linda !!! I very much appreciate that !
I agree!!!
I really enjoyed this whole series. From the skills practice all the way through episode 4. My biggest problem is that I get very impatient with myself. Having you show us step by step really helps me with that a lot. I find if I don't put it down and then come back to it I end up with a mess. Pausing the video helps. it was a lot of stops and starts for me. Of course it doesn't look as good as yours but then I haven't had as much practice as you have. Thank you so much for putting these lessons out. I've learned more in your short videos then I have in watercolor classes for the last 3 years.
That's fantastic Jo ! Glad your finding the videos beneficial. It does help sometimes to walk away and come back to it. I appreciate your feedback on the series ! Thank you.
I have another question. I have the list of colors and brands you use but wanted to know if there is a huge difference between Windsor Newton and journey. I have another question along a different line too; my watercolor class at the senior center is doing an exhibit at the senior center. I would like to display (and maybe sell??) Some of the paintings i have done based on your tutorials. However I understand about the proprietary nature and know I need permission from the originating artist. I would of course give you the credit for my work. Please let me know....our exhibit is in a week.
As far as brands of paint and performance. I think most brands of "artist" grade paints are pretty good. I also believe it varies by color. Sometimes a brand has a certain color that seems a bit better than the rest. American Journey is Cheap Joes Brand which they have had for years. I believe it's actually made by DaVinci. Windsor Newton has of course been around for ever. I've been happy with American journey over the years and I've used Windsor Newton which does a fine job. The biggest difference to me is the cost. I use quite a bit of paint and I can get 37ml tube of AJ at the price of a 15ml tube of WN. Using Burnt Sienna as an example, 14 ml WN cost $11.59...AJ 15 ml cost $7.49 AJ 37 ml cost $11.29 As far as your exhibition question, sure no problem...good luck with your exhibition! Thank you for asking.
Thank you Rick. My whole class watches your videos now. Good information on the paint. Thank you for the quick response I will definitely look into Cheap Joe's after I use my Winsor Newton paint. Keep up the good work love your videos.
Thanks Jo !!!
Восхищена Вашей работой!!Такая детализация камней!!!У меня терпения не хватит!
Fantastic! Thanks so much, and absolutely yes we want more!
Absolutely beautiful!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this as it was a summary of the other videos you did. I learned a lot and it was a great refresher as well. You definitely were able to demonstrate visually the way to mix neutrals, greys, warm and cool, and how to add texture and the list could go on! What a wonderful example of an awesome teacher and painter! Thank you! I sure hope you continue as I have not seen such a great work elsewhere. Your presentation could be/should be used in every art class!

Çok başarılı dere taşları!...
I Agree with many of the other comments about your instructional painting videos.Terry Devries said it all.The skills exercise with this one was particularly helpful.Hopefully, you will do more of these on various topics/ elements of design. It is helpful to have a refresher or learn something new even for those of us who have been painting for a number of years.
Thanks Linda! I'm glad you like the format and refreshing to hear your last comment!!! I try to learn with every painting I do or see done. I believe you have to think that way to continue to evolve as an artist.
Great explanation of design elements and graduation- both which I need assistance to develop my skills in watercolor. Thanks so. Ugh for your time and talents.
Thanks Joy !!!
Really enjoyed this. you made it so easy to follow. Thank you.
Thanks Glenise !!!
Great first tutorial! Thanks for sharing
Thank you ! I appreciate that Sam.
Thanks for making such a wonderful contribution to teaching watercolour painting. I've been struggling with exactly how to plan my paintings, and then the detail required to finish them off. Your process to teaching is excellent, and I am so pleased with my result. Great to focus on just the paints and brush skills, and not the drawing skills, perspective, etc. I can't wait to get into my next Paint Along experience.
Thanks for the great feedback Michelle!
Excellent tutorials!
Thank you Karen!
Excellent explanation of how to paint rocks. This is a difficult topic for me, to make them look real. Thanks a lot!

Another fantastic job Rick! Clear, concise and informative. Occasionally I personally would have liked to have seen your pallet just to see the amounts of puddles of paint you mixed up for this size painting. Please continue to make these great videos.
Thanks Liam. I'm trying figure out how to do that without taking away from watching the painting process.
Thank you very very much
Very good video, thumbs up!
I appreciate that !!!
Excellent! Thank you.
Thanks Jodi !
Richard rohr
I was planning the last few days to go through the rock theme with watercolor and you posted this series, this is exactly what I need! Thank you so much!
That's super Sara !!!
Yes it is! :D
I have a request if you don't mind, can you show us how to paint some water resting in between those rocks and the techniques that we can use for reflections?
That's one of the subjects I hope to get to. It's a more challenging composition, but a good suggestion. Thanks!
I hope to see it soon done by you because you really make things look simpler!
Loved the video. Thank you for sharing.....jb. 👍👍
Thank you !
Very nicely explained video
Thank you!
J'aime beaucoup !
Very Nice !
Thank you
Very nice
Me fascinan las rocas. Identificada con este tema.
I also enjoy painting rocks.
Bellissimi, sembrano veri.
Thank you for commenting!
diggin them values, shades, tones, tints and textures
Thanks Rick, what size paper did you use? I may have missed that somewhere.
I used a quarter sheet 11" x 15" for this.
nice
Thanks Mathew !
that was very helpful. when you say glaze is that just watered down watercolour paint? also I couldn't quite hear what that eraser was called that you used to take the masking fluid off. thankyou very much. 👍
Yes, When I mention glazing, it's a thinned layer of watercolor. I'll also call it a wash. The eraser is a "pick up" eraser. I have all my supplies listed on the studio page of my website. If you follow this link it will take you to that page. The eraser is listed with the masking supplies I use.
Forgot the link rsurowiczart.com/studio/
Rick Surowicz Watercolor thankyou so much for your quick reply :)
I forgot to ask you, is working on a flat surface or raised surface better when painting rocks etc?
I always have my board at an angle no matter what I paint. Normally I keep it at 15 -20 degrees. If you haven't seen it, here's a link to a video where I describe the importance painting at an angle and using gravity to control the medium. ua-cam.com/video/j3E0Cdh5tCY/v-deo.html
Rick, my toothbrush and Liquid Frisket made some "texture" that looks too blobby to me---How do I fix that so that it doesn't look like my rocks have snowflakes? Or, should I just keep going and see if it really needs "fixing" later?
never mind. I applied a glaze like you suggested in your video because of your "white" spots, too
When I get those and they don't bother me I leave them. Other times I know I'm not going to like the mark, so when the masking fluid is dry, I remove what I don't like before I paint. If I go ahead and I don't like it , I paint over it.
Should a focal point be something special or different? Or is the focal point just a point in our paintings that we want our audience's vision to rest on?
You want to draw the viewer in and give them something to look at ... at the same time you want to lead them around your composition. Often the focal point will have the greatest contrast, most detail, brightest colors. The rule of thirds helps define the best location for the focal point.
Thankyou, Rick. I have heard you say that before. I think I need to study more.
Ich finde das Video nicht toll.
Vieles wird garnicht beschrieben was man an Materialien benutzt.
