I am not a beginner but have learnt so much from this and will definately make a few of these. Thanks again for your generousity in sharing your talent
What a great idea and awesome tutorial, I am getting my paper ready to give it a try. I certainly see the value in this as sometimes I find myself using the same color scheme over and over again. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this interesting concept. I'm a beginner. I've been painting every day for about seven months now. I finally have decent brushes and professional grade paints that I enjoy. I've very recently been finally getting over myself, a little an trying exercises in a looser style. Your examples of ways to use this effect are really impressive. I especially liked the landscape with building example. I don't see many people using this technique. Of course, the floral in which you've used tape to create added interest, I found to have a kind of stunning effect in showcasing the whole composition. I like your work and your flexibility with style. I'm learning and picking up some great ideas.
Every morning I try to find a fun little pick me up video to start my day. This was it for me today. I will definitely be trying this. I work in inks but I think many watercolor techniques and tricks transfer to inks. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you.
Thanks for this painting exercise! I am a beginner so this will be most helpful. Your art is beautiful and inspiring ... I am so glad I found your channel! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Oh my..I am a newbie, totally..If I attempt this, should I write the name of the colors, since I am not familiar with them yet..thank you for willingness to help newbies like myself
@@margoreilly9881 Instead of writing the names of the colours down, I plan on working along with this video until I really get it. That is what works best for me anyway.
In each one it is the gold and the green that brings out the colours. L❤️ve it 🌈 Thank you, this has opened up areas in colour that I have been looking for. Edit- typo
Thank you for this color chart tip! My difficulty in starting a painting has always been what "color-combos" to use. I now have a reference chart that solves this problem for me. Love your work and thanks for sharing!
i know im randomly asking but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Elliott Blaine i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Great idea Rick. I know you are so experienced that you can likely just look at each one and know what colours you used, but for us newbies, we should likely make notes :) Thank you once again for sharing your ideas and techniques.
Thank you for all your videos and excellent instruction! I am inspired to keep experimenting even though I am new to the whole process and the medium itself. Thank you for making it so much fun as well as informative.
My question is, how do you know what color/combination of paint you used. I did this exercise and loved it. I found tiles that I really liked. But, I have no idea what colors were used in each tile.
My palette rarely changes and I know the colors on my palette very well. That being said, I pay the more attention to the color I see as it relates to the color wheel and less about the name of the particular color I used. If I like the combination of a yellow orange, red violet, and yellow green, I know I can get there with any number of paints.
I really like this exercise! I’m new, and can’t be too free with my strokes because I have a tremor. In spite of that, I would like to continue trying. I looked at the classes on your website and they looked too hard for a newbie.. Do you have a list of videos that would be the most helpful for a new person? Are there really more than three classes offered, perhaps that I just don’t know how to get to? I’m not on Facebook and don’t want to do that so really I guess I’m asking for your advice as to how your videos/ classes can help me. Thank you so very much!
Hi Donna, My online courses have only been available since February. I will continue to add to my available courses. I am developing a series of courses focusing on the fundamentals. If you go to my learning center and click on the "website" tab it will take you to my website. If you click on the "Newsletter" tab you can sign up to receive my newsletter where I post information about my courses. Thanks for asking!
Beautiful effects. I will try this. I assume if you live in Medina, you know my favorite artist, fred Graff, master of glazing. I'd like to take workshop with you.
What a great video! I just tried this today and I am a total water color beginner....but mine came out great! I loved just playing with the colors! The only trouble I had was when I removed the masking tape...it made part of my watercolor paper (140 lb cold press) come up and fuzzy looking. I think I need to look for a different type/brand tape? Any suggestions? Thank you for this great video and the inspiration to try this!
I work on 140 CP most of the time. Most often I just use masking tape to tape my paper to my board. When I remove it, it may leave the paper fuzzy, but it's on the edge and doesn't impact anything. When I use it to mask with on my painting surface, I'll put the tape on something else first such as my jeans or other fiber to lessen the adhesive. I've used 3M, "Duck" brand and generic brands. At some point I've had success with all and issues with all. I think they vary batch to batch. It's best just to experiment. Currently I'm using 3m and "Duck" brand.
The jeans/other surface idea is something I use myself & it helps a lot. Just be a bit careful that you don’t cause little gaps on the tape edge with too much dust etc because if there’s too much the paint can leak/seep under the tape a bit & you won’t get a nice crisp edge look! It takes a few tries to get it just right (a lesson I learnt myself, lol) but it does work! :)
Thanks Marcia! I started painting "again" two years ago after more than fifteen years away from it. I've actually spent my career in manufacturing management. I've been spending the past year getting re-connected with the art world.
Does the spray bottle you use have a particular fine mist. I have a spray bottle but I'm not sure how good it is. I think you said in another video that you use a Sennellier spray bottle. Thanks.
Hi Joe, Here is a link to a short video about the bottle I use. ua-cam.com/video/KI6Wgx7sKJY/v-deo.html It's made by Atelier. I have all my supplies listed on the "Studio" page of my website also. Here is that link : rsurowiczart.com/studio/
I just finished my little Color Scheme Exercise. It looks like a Kindergartner could have done better. I think I put on the paint too heavy, and didn't dilute it on the tray first. But it sure is colorful! Back to the drawing board.
I know my palette pretty well. For the most part I can recognize the colors as they appear on paper. That being said, I try to view them for the colors they are on the color wheel and not so much the name on the tube of paint. For example violet, blue violet, with yellow orange, and yellow green rather than ultramarine blue and rose madder, and sap green.....
Thank you Remi ! I appreciate you mentioning that ! A few others have suggested that over the last few months and I wasn't familiar with it at the time. I have given it some thought. I enjoy making these videos so people can see how I paint and maybe learn a few things along the way. What I'm finding out is it takes a lot of time and impacts my other painting efforts, so I'm trying to figure that out. Thanks for sharing that thought!!!
Wow, love this exercise. Definitely going to give it a go. This video and many of your others get me thinking and painting outside my comfort zone.
Thanks Rick for your generosity in sharing your knowledge
Oh yay, some of my favourite colours. What a great idea.
This is the first time I've seen something new in a while. Also a good way to get over creative block. Thank you

Thank you for another great tutorial. Very, very useful. Cannot wait to make my swatches today! As always, I appreciate your time.
Glad you showed it with the second camera, so we could see the colors were brighter. It’s a great idea and I think I will try it.
That sounds good Essie !
What a great idea to see how your colors will work together! Thanks again for a great tip.
Glad you like it Lorie! I have a few of these and I find them helpful when I'm coming up blank.

Great point Mary ! I think I'll add that to the description for the video. Thanks !
Just what I was thinking Mary. I’ll need to make note of the colours for reference:) Thanks Rick I look forward to your tutorials.
Great (or forgetful) minds think alike :)
Very cool ! Looks like lots of fun to do, too ! I will definitely be trying this. I esp. like the row 2, tiles 3 and 4 color schemes.

Great feedback ! Thank you !!!
Thanks some excellent ideas here.
Good example to produce ideas when stuck!
Great fun, and the result is very decorative.
Glad you enjoyed it Francoise !
Love this tutorial! Loose watercolor is a little intimidating to me, so I think this is a great place for me to start.
That's great ! I find it a good way to play with the paint and colors without worrying about whether you're creating a masterpiece.
Don't miss this, as it should be a fun thing to do!
thanks this is so helpful to me as someone who wants to paint but can never figure it out
I'm glad this is helpful!!!

Beautiful effects. I will try this. I assume if you live in Medina, you know my favorite artist, fred Graff, master of glazing. I'd like to take workshop with you.
I do know Fred. While I don't paint on Yupo like Fred, he has had the greatest influence on me as an artist and how I approach art mentally.
Valuable tool and looks like it is fun to make. Do you hang yours on the wall ? It looks pretty enough to me.
There are times when I hang color studies around me when I paint.
Fun and useful! Thank you!
That's great !
You rock!
Thanks Suzi!

I've done it before and someone else also commented that they use that method.

Interesting exercise --
I have a few of these sheets. I use them to spark ideas at times.
I'm framing this!
Fun, and instructive. Have you always been able to earn a living as an artist? You are a great teacher!
Thanks Marcia! I started painting "again" two years ago after more than fifteen years away from it. I've actually spent my career in manufacturing management. I've been spending the past year getting re-connected with the art world.
Very interesting and informative I am very new to crafting n water coloring thank you!
I the cityscape example, how did you achieve the straight lines? Mahl stick, tape masking? Thanks.
I used a frisket cut with a knife.

For me I have to write down the colors because I can't remember them. But, I use a reference book full of these combos repeatedly.
